Hi Dave,

The East CFR selection is looking a little light. I thought Glo Leopards were done? Any plans to add anything since most the Katanas have been sold?

Glow leopards have been run. We are scrambling to mold regular stock right now so nothing new until we catch up.

Dave,

Can you verify/deny the following claim.

I was told that all First Run discs are run using a cheaper "Filler" plastic to basically test out the durability of the mold, make sure large production runs are coming out right and within specs.

The production run is then ran using the normal plastic that will be used for all future runs of a disc.

Is this true?
Is this why First Run discs almost always fly different than the Production runs?
Is this how "Night-Shift" discs were made? Did they run out of regular plastic and try and pull a fast one and use the "Filler" plastic.

Thanks for answering those questions that I'm sure keeps someone somewhere awake at night.

Not true at all. As for first runs being different. It happens sometimes and not others. Different runs may be run with different material batches and therefor might be different or not. On the other hand, there might be something to a brand new mold that does something different, that disappears over time, like the record grooves that are sometimes there. If this is the case, I can't explain it.

re the roc+:
i like the feel of the stiff r-pro plastic, and would love to get a regular rancho roc in this plastic. I like how they are nice and flat.
i like the feel of the roc+ mold, but am still unsure of the slanted inner rim. was this slanted rim the only change in the mold? what was the purpose of the change, a different feel? what is the future of the mold, and what type of feedback are you getting from the team as well as the public?

Everything else is the same except it allows us to make heavier discs without as much weighting agent, and discs that feel better in the hand to some. The reaction is mixed. Long time Roc throwers are the most likely to not like it. They like the Roc the way it normally is. Players who didn't like the relatively small Roc rim, like the fuller feel of the + version. I am in this catagory, and prefer the + version. Now, people like me will be able to get the benefit of throwing a Roc for their game. It will likely be used in a limited capacity like R-Pro or a limited variation in some other material like Champion, which is what I prefer. Only R-Pro is main stream.

So whats up with the newest lightweight Star Boss? I have developed a cult following for the 167-168g that show the Starlight mix. The newest are really grippy and dont show the leftover residue. Are they still going to have the same flight lines or is there something different so you dont need the Starlight mix anymore?

The light ones still use the Starlight, but we are getting a little better at it. It's tricky. They still should be very stable to over stable. 166-168gm. Higher weight than that and it's hit and miss as to the stability. Rarely they go down to 165g, but get even more over stable.

We made several different models specifically for the Japan Open competition that fly very much the same way the heavies do. Star Destroyers, Star Katanas, Star Darts, KC Aviars, R-Pro Rocs, TeeBirds, Banshees, P2s, Monarchs, and a few others. These should make competing in Japan, much easier a transition for the international players.

Dave,
Are there any plans to make a new fast and overstable disc? I'm thinking something with Max-like stability with Destroyer-like speed. It's tough for those of us with big arms to get big D in heavy winds using what is currently available. Even Xcalibers aren't cutting it. I've been throwing my XCal with a huge hyzer into a headwind, and it still rolls over.

the champs that i have are far more durable than the dx, slightly moreso than the star. more importantly, the champs seem to have a more consistent and controllable late turn right (RHBH) and can even be thrown very straight at mid-speed. the stars that i've thrown seem to flip over very quickly out of the hand at a wider array of speeds. i tend to favor max weight champ stingrays where others throw seasoned rocs. i do throw a champ roc when i need an overstable approach disc, but the stingray just feels more natural for a utility/mid-range disc.

Begs the question: Would a magnetic paint applied to the chains lead to less spit-throughs and bounce outs (I'm not familiar with the magnetic properties of metal salts)? I know more than a few disc golfers who would pee their pants at the thought of it.

from another forum:
I have been going through every DX Roc I see around here and some of them seem to be Roc+es (is that how you pluralize it?). The weird thing is, the tilt on the rim is not nearly as steep on the DX as it is on the R-Pro when they are held in comparison. I am wondering if it is just the way this newer DX plastic they are using molds up, if it causes the rims to get jacked up? The ones I am seeing have a noticeable tilt on the rim, but nowhere near what the Roc+ is. I have about 30 new Ranchos from nearly every DX and KC Pro run they've put out since 11x, and this new DX plastic is definitely the softest DX I have seen and different from any run prior. It is no secret sometimes plastics mold up unusually (Champ Archangels anyone?), and I am wondering if maybe that is the case with these "mutant" DX Rocs we are seeing. Maybe, just MAYBE it's not all conspiracy theories and smoke and mirrors? Hmmmm?

hey Dave-- I thought you might find the above post interesting. I just got 3 new dx rocs from the recent run and they have slanted inner rims, but all markings indicate dx rancho.
any more thoughts on this?

could you make a roc that has a vertical inner rim wall, but with a slightly wider rim than, but still shaped like, a rancho? I like the idea of a beefier, better feeling roc, but am not a fan at all of the slanted inner rim.

almost lastly--I think a dx BB aviar in the stiff r-pro plastic (like the r-pro roc+ plastic) would be amazing.

lastly- any word on flat, regular production champion gators?

thanks as always

I bought a 172g Star Destroyer that is SUPER stable a couple weeks ago, and it's marked S/DS, instead of the regular hand drawn star/D. I know that Star Destroyers generally start out pretty stable, but this thing is crazy. Any idea why? It's blue, domey, and almost seems to have a nipple on top.

Don't really know why, but most likely it is a night shift Destroyer not properly marked. Star is generally supposed to be a -1 high speed for 400ft throws.

Hi Dave, just looking for some additional confirmation that there is nothing special about discs that are marked with an "S" instead of a "*." A lot of people seem to think that the S/DS destroyers are more stable, etc. I think it's just different employees at the factory who have different ways they like to mark the discs. Is this the case?

You are correct both * and S/ are the same Star designation.

Dave,
You had previously said that the you might produce the Destroyer in the Star Light plastic. Is this still in the works. Does Star light have to equal "extra stabilized" like the super beefy Star Light Bosses? Is there any chance of producing Star Light Bosses that are not super beefy ("extra stabilized"). Thanks for your time!

They are the more grippy new looking Star Bosses. They dont seem to be nearly as overstable as the original batches of Starlights. They almost seem like different plastic altogether.

I agree be a great subsitute to a KC Pro Aviar for winter or raining days. That plastic would stick the chains well. Nice n Grippy

Hey there Dave,
I have a small question for ya! When our Club Board sat down and looked through the list of CFR plastic that was available for order I noticed that the Viper was no longer on the list??? Is that now a discontinued plastic for that disc or is there a hidden reason that i have not found yet????

The Viper is normally run in DX. Occasionally we run Vipers in Champion and they would be used for CFR. We may again run these in the future when we get an opportunity.

from another forum:

We did not run DX in Roc +, however it is possible the R-Pro were stamped with DX. Both the Roc+ and Rancho say Rancho, but the pattern is different.

Good idea with the BB in stiffer R-Pro.

No word yet on the Gators.

In the past, Starlite was the only process for producing lighter weight Destroyers. We just ran Destroyers down to 158gms and most were not beefy. We did include some Starlite Destroyer that were used for Japan that were very beefy. Mostly pinkish.

Yes, there are almost always some variations. Eco Star seems to be consistently more domey. Sometimes more stable as in the case of the first run of Eco Destroyers, and sometimes a little less stable. Usually always with more glide that goes with the dome.

We haven't even test shot it yet. We are way behind our molding schedule at this point. If it tests out well, it will be out before the end of the season. We already know it won't be available in anything but heavy weights for S-series because of the structure. It might work in something like R-Pro for lower weights though.

So on the collector thread Rick says you said only red for 1st Run CE, with the exception of Valks? Does this seem correct? I understand that there isnt alot of info out there from that timeframe, and memories are only so good. But....over the past 5 years I have seen stuff I never thought I would, and I run into stuff that supposedly doesnt exist.

Are you ever going to try to set things straight or keep letting people dictate what supposedly exists and what doesnt? Im not asking for a complete record, which would be nice, but at some point shouldnt there be some sort of official guideline? Im sure this is a big venture, so in the meantime:

Was there only red CE released in the first run batches? What about white and blueberry type colors, or transitional colors?

I can only remember what I can remember. Some discs, like the Eagle came in Yellow and Red, (that I can remember). Some discs, like the Valkyrie, FL, and TL came predominately in Red. TeeBirds, I don't remember color wise. There were a small amount of other colors like blueberry for Valks and possibly FLs. White was a second run color for Valks. All first runs had flash.

I do not have many discs at my house. And those are player discs, not collector. I have lots of discs at the office; on the walls, stacks, boxes, archives. I never really collected any discs at all myself except the very first shot out of our very first mold.

No one has the first two test shots. There were only two and I knew the mold was made wrong. One was cut in half to be examined, the other I kept. This was a hybrid disc which had the correct top and side, but incorrect bottom part. It essentially was the correct Aero shape with too thick of a flight plate.

When the tool maker "corrected" the first shots, the Eagle was made. One month later the Eagle was again corrected to the Aero.

There is no difference between Pro Rhyno and R-Pro. The name R-Pro was used to differentiate driver Pro from Rubber Pro.

I see, but what causes the R-Pro Rhynos to have a dome if they're the same plastic. I own around 15 Pro Rhynos and none of them have a dome. I've seen, felt and thrown about 7-8 R-Pro stamped Rhynos and all had a slight dome. I've seen the same thing mentioned on other forums and by other people.

That effect is dependent on the particular batch of plastic we get from the manufacturer, whether it's Pro, R-Pro or Champion. Same thing happens with drivers. For instance, we haven't had real flat Champion Firebirds in a while, because the plastic just isn't amenable to it.

I guess I should have answered your real question. There were test shots of the Eagle mold after it was retooled from the first test. Those were whitish clear and there weren't very many, but I don't remember how many. After that we did a test shot of colors in a fairly stiff material. There were a significant number of these in bright florescent red/magenta, orange, yellow, and (I think) blue. After this, we did a run of speckled orange in the proper material. This was 3000. We got rid of the specks and ran 7000 more in total of pink, orange, yellow, and blue. Pink were generally 70s, orange were 60s, yellow were 50s and blue were 30s. After this the mold was retooled to the Aero.

The stripper, (which had the micro bead), was worn out and replaced with the no bead version. The domey and understable is an artifact of the particular run, (plastic batch) not the mold difference.

As far as I recall, the Kitty Hawk was a Puppy type disc. We made a Gumputt for DGA, at one time, but I don't think we ever made a Kitty Hawk for them unless they called the Gumputt a Kitty Hawk. We did make two types of Gumputts. One was based on the original (no thumtrac) Birdie, and one was based on the Polecat.

I would imagine they would have some thrower in most types. I believe the collectors are going to be R+. I don't know for sure. These are questions better directed at Jonathan Poole at the USDGC site.

I don't think there will be any Throwers this year, there will be multi stamped X outs. Total number of discs have been cut in half from previous years, to 1500. Partners will be limited to 9 each Collectors Series and 1 POW/ MIA. ZD will auction some of the highly collectible #1 discs on eBay. I've heard they will be Champion Ontario's.

ZD has really stepped up their game. I can't wait to recieve my order.

Some discs will be released to the public, from ZD

At this point we plan to release a few hundred discs, maybe less, via the pro shop at http://www.discgolfunited.com/ Partners will be able to order additional discs online at that time. An online release would not take place until all Partner orders have been shipped. The selection of discs for an online release has not been determined.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I'm not really interested in the numbed collectable discs to throw (that's a bit of a waste for money). Whether they sell X-Outs or stamped throwers really makes no difference to me as long as they're cheap enough to throw.

All of the Kitty Hawks were made by DGA, except the very first which were made by Ben Wal Plastics.
Dave, can you remember whcih years you made the Gumputts, Birdie resp Polecat?

I believe the original type round edge Birdie Gumputts were made in about 1992. The squarer edged type were probably about 1993.

Dave,
I'm wondering if it would be possible to "recycle" CE discs, like you do with echo star, into new molds? Say, if I wanted a CE Destroyer, and I had two CE discs that I don't want, you grind 'em up and re-mold them. I know I'll get slayed for even considering this, but I love Destroyers way more than I love Leopards.

Even if this was possible, which I doubt it is since from what I understand Echo is unthrown, unused plastic...can you imagine the cost to produce you 1 discs?

exczar
Aug 09 2010, 07:16 PM
Also, if you wanted to get a pure CE product, you would have to grind many discs to do it, because you would be starting a new run, and usually, those discs are no good in some way, mainly because the mold is not hot enough, and there would be no way to quickly regrind those initial discs to feed back into the hopper during the same run, so those discs made that way would be very expensive indeed, because you would to grind many, many discs before you got one good one. And that one would be probably a browish color, unless one was very careful about what color discs to grind to create the material for the new discs.

And yes, I do have a background in extrusion.

It is physically possible to grind up old CE and remake them. However, the product would not be the same, plus as Bill said, you would have to grind many old discs, at the proper weight, clean, repelletize and dry it, (as straight regrind would not run properly). If the old CE was out in the sunlight, it would have been subject to UV radiation which kills plastic over time. So, whatever characteristic you were looking for from your old CE, would be gone anyway.

prospect
Aug 09 2010, 10:46 PM
I was just thinking that if someone had a grouping of new, unthrown CE, in the same color from the same run, that it might be possible. I understand the logistics would make it difficult, yet not impossible.

Hey Dave - I just picked up an S-Line PD @ 149 grams. How would you compare the S-Line PD with other discs in the current Innova line?

The PD is kind of like a cross between a TeeBird and Starfire, with a little Firebird thrown in. It has the speed of a 9+, the glide of a Viking or Valkyrie, with more stability than any other 9 speed disc other than the Firebird. From what I have been told, the first run was more over stable than the second.

To Quote some of the Fine Folks over at the DiscGolfReview.com Forums:

The PD is like a Teebird with sunshine coming out of its butthole so hard that it flies faster.

Also, might i suggest the Gospel of the PD?

The groove is an artifact of molding the DD2. I have thrown the DD2 quite a bit both side arm and backhand.

The discs on Ebay are P-Line. They fly in between a Katana and Boss for flight characteristic, but as fast as a Katana with maybe more glide. Very easy to throw relative to the Boss. More controllable, relative to the Katana. Stable enough to not have to worry about flipping them easily. Lots of distance.

So many players get their start with the 3 disc pack or from random discs at D1ck's sporting goods and other stores like that. Has there been any discussion for a Star/Champ Wolf? Kites and Stingrays aren't that disc. I would love to make an all Innova bag but I'm impatient and don't feel like beating in Rocs or flat Coyotes to make a Meteor. The Meteor is so popular. I feel like a Star wolf could be a Meteor'esque with a little less glide. Also, it would be a logical step up for the beginning player to get the disc he/she started with in a better plastic.

I would like Dave to answer it is the topic of this thread.

There are a lot of discs that are CFR that would sell well if released normally but there is a reason they are CFR. The Star Destroyer was out for how long before we saw a champ non CFR version? There are other reasons, Im sure, than just demand for discs to be held up in production of alternate plastics including inventory space, mold storage, plastic shortages, mold technology issues, scrap rates. It could also be a capacity issue.

Dave,

Why is Jonathan Poole going to sell all the extra rocs he has to the public at the same price as what the USDGC partners got them for?

Was that not the point of paying an extra $100 to get one of the coveted Partner spots? To have access to Rocs that the regular joe cant buy, except through them (the sponsor)?

Would it not have been easier to offer all the partners a chance to buy them up first since they were limited at 10 Rocs a piece?

All i see this doing is shooting the Partners in the foot since they became a sponsor to support the USDGC, and make money off the Rocs as an added bonus.

I am not a USDGC Partner, but a very surprised Roc collector who expected to pay more than Sponsor price per roc this year.

Innova makes the Millenium Aurora MS (pro plastic), the Sirius MS (star plastic) or the QMS (champion plastic). the clear QMS's are more overstable than i like but the old opaque QMS and the new Sirius MS (aka: SMS) work for me much better than a Z Buzzz. the MS also pre-dates the Buzzz by quite a bit.

Partners pay for the privilege of being the FIRST to purchase, not exclusive rights to purchase. Allowing others to get in on the sales should actually help partners "..make money off Rocs as an added bonus."

Here is link to a news release on USDGC site explaining the goals for this year's release.

http://zonedriven.com/03/30/33010-usdgc-rocs

Excerpt:
...One thing we have lost over the years however, is the frenzy that came years ago during the online release. Before the USDGC Partner program, ALL USDGC Rocs were released online in a first come, first served fashion. This created a unique buying frenzy that while at times frustrating (on both sides) generated a nirvana that made the program even more successful. We simply must regain some of that energy with the next release.

....That said, we are considering an online release of some kind at DGU. This will enable the entire disc golf community to get involved once again, which should in return, create an energy that has been sorely missing for the last few years. In the end, that lack of participation seems to have eliminated the hype that in turn helped to fuel collectability.

Honestly I have always like mid grade plastic teebird (old KC, non-champion platic) and they are becoming more and more scarce. I throw Champion teebird+'s and I like the grip and I'd like to get back to just carrying one mold for my fairway drivers. Currently I'm carrying a TB+, Ch TB, Ch EL, CE EL and 2 CE TL's. Not To mention I have greater sucess with any anhyzers and flat shots with a beat in disc that was over stable at one point in time.

Hi Dave,

I'm curious about the flashing on discs. I just recently won an auction on Ebay for an '06 USDGC SB Roc. When I received the disc, I noticed that the disc was not smooth along the edges. It had clearly looked like someone had cut the flashing off by hand and did a pretty poor job of it.

My question is do you cut the flashing off during the disc making process? If you do, do you do it by hand or trim it by machine?

I know it sounds like a silly question and perhaps even obvious.

Thanks,

Todd

Thanks,

Todd

Not a silly question at all. The flashing is taken off by hand for Champion, Pro, and Star. Usually, the workers do a pretty good job, but trimming errors do occur and are sometimes a cause for a disc to be an X-Part. We have tried to find a way to automate it, but so far, no go.

Dave,

Has a Champ Glow Mako been made? If not, will it?
Thanks,

Seriously? I dont think a trimming machine would be that hard to make. On my budget maybe, but I doubt on yours.

If you said it was easier or more efficient to do it by hand, that I can see.

I did hear a rumor once Discraft offered to sell thier device? If they do them by hand, Id not only be suprised, but impressed at thier quality control.

Champion Glow Makos will be made at some point. Right now the closest is
a Champion Glow Coyote, which is a little more stable.

We actually contracted out to three different places to make one, but they all came up empty. Meanwhile several of our molders got good at trimming by hand. The problem with that is not everyone is good at it, so the trimming suffers at times. I would love to have an automatic trimmer at each of our machines, but don't know how to get one.

Wow, that's impressive, actually. In addition hard to believe this process isn't automated. Thanks for the answer.

I've tried 3 browsers and can't PM you. I have about 10 CFR Starfire L from a tournament I ran a few years ago.
Maybe if you can PM me or email me here ([email protected]).
Anyone else have trouble? When I click on a name to the left I never get new window or any info on the poster like I used to.
Tried Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome browsers.

any chance your going to make a run of champ starfire-L again, I have lost my CFR starefire-L and the star SL just doesn't seem to be the same disc,

Right click then select open in new window or open in new tab and this should work for you. Not sure why it's now working like old but this will help.

Dave,

I have always been a fan of the eagle-x. Has the disc ever been run as echo star? Or do you plan to produce some anytime soon?

Thanks,
Zach J

The L was only used in the first couple of years. The X is the standard Eagle mold now.

I know all this guys. I was just wondering(i know why) after all these years we have to start calling them Eagle-X I own several CE Eagles and only one is a EL and still throw the 2-3 CEs Just wasn't til a few years ago that I started seeing EX is All. Not trying to be rude. Just saying why change the name after this long.

Tand TL molds are the same way; you saw both the TL and T molds used for the CE Teebirds. If anything, I think consumers have gotten more knowledgeable about discs, so differentiating them with different names makes sense.

We are not planning to run heavier (above 165gms) again. But, I can't say never as there may be a significant demand or specific request by a large event or dealer.

Why do you ask?

I'm a big fan of them. The ones at 168g are bombers. Yes, they do get beat up quick, but theyre super fast and stable before that, and once broken in it becomes a long tail wind anhyzer driver or roller. The lighter ones dont do much for me, so i was just curious.

Dave,
Seriously, though, Glow Champion/DX Rhyno...any chance? Don't like being stuck with having to putt with an Aviar.

We do make both Champion and DX Rhynos and there is a chance we might do some glow in either or both.

Dave,

Do the BB Aviars ever get run in DX? I like putting with JKs but sometimes in the heat they get a little too floppy and the KCs are still a little to stiff. Thanks!
