Thanks for the response Dave. I am guessing like me you are either using a JK Aviar-x or a Coyote in those situations. i used to strictly throw straight at the target but in some situations the other approach is beginning to seem the better choice, and i like your situational, rather than prescriptive, answer. :D

In the span of 24 hours, I managed to
buy a new 168g Champion SW
lose my year old 171g Champion SW and
buy a new 171g STAR SW
(in that order)
Now. Is it me, the weight, or the plastic. I have thrown both as my primary driver for 18 holes. The STAR SW seems to have more hyzer on the end of the drive. And it doesn't seem to hold the anny line for as long.
If I'm not crazy, then will the STAR SW eventually become more like the Champion and hold the anny line longer.
(I throw line-drive style tee shots and my SW distance on the course is between 270' and 300'.)
It's making my choice of "go-to" disc hard :)
Dave, I recently purchased an early Innova Target from a friend. It has a DGA Base on it. He remembers it originaly had a wooden base. Is that possible? I figured it had a green cone / mound. It has threaded pipe, 18 chains on 18 spokes, yellow tapered bottom of basket (like on the "crush your buddies" poster). He may have won it around 1997. I would like to put it back to original as a classic. Thanks.

I've got the two original Innova baskets. One is like a garbage can, all plastic. The other has a steel cage [top & bottom] the pole was plumbing tubes with a toilet inlet screwed to a wood base. These came with plastic tubes, no chains.

The originals may have had a threaded wooden base, but that was not for long. The threaded green metal base took over fairly soon. Now the base is a wire type base. The yellow tray has been replaced with a deeper galvanized one.

Anything you can do to make those Leopards a little more flat like the old CE and not domey like the clear CE or Champion would be very appreciated. The first few runs of CE Leopards are the bomb. IMO, you havent had a Leopard since.
Just my opinion, but I think the newer Leopards are way to much like TLs or QJLS'. Thanks again Dave, and I dont mean to sound rude. Its print.

Your Champion Monster may be the X type. The original Champion Monsters were L type. We did one run of Champion Monsters that were X type, then we went back to the original as we felt it was more useful. The Stars are L type too.

I throw CE Leopards as my main driver, and I have found that there are definitely very flat ones, and very domey ones out there. The ones made from the more opaque, grippy plastic (I'm assuming earlier runs with more urethane?) are always flatter...The more translucent ones seem to be domier. All of the champion leopards I have seen have been domey, which is why I dont really like them. The different leopards have significantly different flights, the flat CE ones move a lot quicker and roll better. I have been stocking up.

Dave, what drivers/discs do you recommend for players who put 1)more 2)less spin on their drives? And in your opionion, how does spin affect disc flight combined with higher and lower velocities?
The higher the spin, the slower the rate of precession or turn of the disc. This is for any speed.
More or less spin affects putts and up shots more than drives as it is difficult to modulate spin at higher velocities, and it doesn't make much difference anyway. Velocity, nose angle, and a clean snap (as opposed to flutter) affect drives much more than rate of spin.
All this being said: higher speed throwers should throw more stable discs (like TeeBirds). Fluttery throwers should throw overstable discs to counteract their flutter (like Firebirds). Lower speed throwers should throw discs with carry and only mild low speed overstability (like Leopards, Valkyries, Roadrunners). Lower speed throwers, and those who are prone to injuries, should throw lower weight discs.

IMHO- star is not only less durable [although slightly] than champ, in many cases it is less grippy [also slightly] as well. i have compared many new discs and only seen a few "grippy" star discs. i realize this is a gross generalization--as discs vary disc to disc, but it has been my experience. i think star should have a slightly more "grippy-pro-plastic-type-feel", and come in between dx and champ as far as price goes. it could be their mid-grade line, almost like the old pro plastic with more champ blended in, to give it more rigidity and durability, and not have it come out so soft and domey. [remember some of the "blended" 10x teebirds? those felt about perfect] please excuse my ignorance as far plastic production goes--i do not know if you blend plastics or not.

My Star (SB) Orcs are every bit as durable as Champ and seem to break in even more slowly. The grippiness is definitely an upgrade form Champion too in terms of being less rigid and more tacky.
i have heard the Wraith (in all candy flavors) breaks in the fastest -- perhaps due to its nose shape and mass?

I remember when Innova's best discs bore the name of the best player of all time, Ken Climo. Now with Star plastic and the problems with KC Aviars it is dissappointing to see Kenny's name absent from my new Star Firebirds and Teebirds. The Champ is still tearing it up against the toughest competition disc golf has ever seen. Please don't take the "Champion" out of Innova Champion discs! :D

Star Goblin is currently available in CFR. We test discs at 1500 ft elev and lower. We do use them at 7200 ft when we play at Wrightwood.
I learned to compensate for altitude by throwing slower rated discs faster.

Hey Dave,
I remember reading somewhere that the DX plastic was changed and now has a different mix of plastics than older dx discs. I was wondering, assuming that this is true, if this new blend consists has more of the Pro like plastics.
I have two beadless dx aviars that I have just started using this year. My blue dx aviar was bought from Marshall Street earlier this spring and was given to me in almost new condition. When I first got the disc I didn't notice, but later on I realized that it feels almost identical to my 11x kc aviar, but is a little more tackier.
Last week I bought a red dx aviar from marshall street. This one feels like my JK aviar, just a little harder.
So, what is the deal with this dx plastic?

Just got my CFR/Star Rhynos Thursday. First impressions are...
They are stiffer than my old ProLine and my really old beat up SE Rhynos.
The plastic seems stiffer than my Star drivers (SW and Valk) but not nearly as stiff as the DX discs I've thrown.
The plastic has more grip than any DX disc I've thrown.
They are domey (domier????). Anything would be domey compared to those two.
I did not get a chance to throw anything longer than across my front yard. My impression there was that...
I already knew how I wanted to throw the disc. (I wasn't guessing.)
Slow or torqued releases do not wobble as badly (as compared to my proline).
My sweaty hands will not become like glue on these discs.
And finally....I hoped you drooled on your keyboard :D

When will I be able to find Star Leopards at my local shop?
Also, the leopard I am using now was bought back in 2003. The stamp on it says "Pro Leopard Fairway Driver" on it but it is made in a semi-opaque champion type plastic. Star Leopards should be available next week. Pro-line is probably a Pro Leopard. But, if it is not Pro plastic it is a Champion or CE type. Pro plastic will not hold up as well as CE, Champion, or Star. Pro plastic also produced discs that had more carry and less stability than the other plastics.

He is definately not a world champion in movie trivia. :D

A Star Coyote is close, inbetween a Dark side Comet and a Dark side Buzzz, but it is a pure breed without any clone ingredients  :p . and then there is the QMS or Aurora MS which is straighter than a Comet and also has never colluded with the Dark side :o:D :p
what i would love to see, after putting a QMS back in the bag -- is a Star QMS. Dave, any chance of that ever happening?

I threw comets for years and I will tell you coyote aurora and qms are nothing like a comet. The closest thing IMO is a E-element, and even they need a little break in to be close to a comet out of the box. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I would have to agree on the star monsters...the first time I saw one it did look kinda different than the champ ones that I have....couldn't really quite place it though... could have been a slight higher dome maybe?...probably is just some weird way the star plastic molded up or something...I'm sure they probably throw the same though....

Yes, same as what they did to the Beast, The rim is straight across or almost convex. The only reason I noticed it is because I did throw it and it wasn't very Monster like at all.

Not really. The domier style seems a bit more understable than the originals and the grip seems different. Bummer. They do, however, handle the tomahawk fairly well.

The STAR Monster is nowhere near the Champ Monster as far as hyser. I'm really dissapointed in the flight. It's more like a beat up banshee. Straight forever than hyser a little and fall.

Star Monsters are in the "L" mold. Just like every other disc in the "L" mold, they are less stable. I dont think Id even compare it to a beat up Banshee, as those are still more beefy. I really dont see alot of difference between the Teerex and the Monster, but my Monster isnt totally beat in.
These Monsters are awesome for overhead shots though, you got that right. Throwing my farthest thumbers ever.

I have the X mold and L mold in champion, and my STAR Monster is unlike either of them. It is missing the slight lip the champion L mold has close to the inside lip making it perfectly straight across the bottem

Dave,
My Star Aviar has cut through chains three times in my last four tourney rounds causing my card mates to exclaim,
Dude that's a once in a career happening.
I can't believe what I just saw.
No way that was perfect.
Is the plastic too slick? Would I be better off with a DX putter? Am I just too strong to putt?
Thanks.

from what i understand, the plan for some time was to move to a generic "World Champion" stamp rather than specifying the exact number of titles KC or JK (and maybe now DR) has won...
maybe an idea worth considering would be to come out with a limited edition 12x stamp -- maybe the Rocs with that stamp could even be for next year's USDGC Roc release.... (?)

The Star Shark might be what you are looking for. It is not as overstable as a Champion Shark. It is more like a good Ontario Roc. It has better glide than a Roc, but not quite as good as a Coyote. Bear in mind, the differences are small between all three.

Yes, I think so, but the Orc is still selling well. I don't think the TeeRex is hurting the sales as much as the Wraith. The TeeRex seems to be more open Pro oriented.
