There is currently a new 18 hole course being installed in Greenville, NC. This is going to be a public course and involves the Recreation and Parks Dept of Greenville and the newly formed Greenville Disc Golf club. Work has all ready begun on the course. If anyone knows the course that is all ready in Greenville at ECU, the know it is a short course, not that anything is wrong with this. The main reasons we need this new course is the amount of traffic on the ECU course, the type of course and the public has no type of authority with the course since it is owned by the university. The new course will have 2 tee pads on most of the holes (14) and they will be cement pads along with tee signs. The Rec/Parks dept has been very very cooperative with the club and has done all we have asked so far. The biggest issue we will have to contend with is raising the money for the course. We are going about this by offering sponsorships on the holes. The tee signs will have the company's or person's name on half of it(the signs are 12 x 18). When a hole is sponsored, that will cover the cost of basket, tee and tee sign. Another nice thing is we will be a non-profit orginization soon so that should set well with potential sponsors.
This is a learning project for all those involved but things so far are going well and problems that come up are being solved. Hopefully by the end of 2004, we can have monthly's and other tourneys out there and in 2005 have a weekend event. If anyone is interested or has advice or even just wants to chat about the course, please feel free to respond to this or email me at
[email protected] Have a good day and a better round.

Way to go!! Keep up the good work!
Does the course or park have a name yet?
Would you please post directions to the course?
As soon as the course is open I assume that you will add the info to the PDGA Directory.
For me personally, I'm on a quest to play every course in NC. To date I've played every course installed before 2004, but I have to get to 4 which were all installed in 2004.
Keep us posted, and you can email if you want at

As far as I know, there are poles in the ground for the course, and I believe that there is still a good amount of work to be done on the course. But, I know that both the Parks and Rec and the club has put in a serious number of man hours clearing a lot of the course since the last time I was there.
The course should be good one with a mix of wooded, open, and wooded open holes. Should have a few holes (such as "Swiss Cheese") that offer shots that I haven't seen or aren't offered at a lot of courses.
I can't give exact directions (as I have only been there once), but I know it is across the Green Street bridge on the left.

you guys are too funny!
But seriously, Mr.Faison, can somebody give me hole sponsorship info?
scottfaison
Jul 26 2004, 05:46 PM
Yeah Scott, the numbers are not fixed but we think that a partial hole sponsorship ranges from 125-250 and a full sponsorship will be about 500. That would include the tee(s), tee sign and basket. Yeah its a high price but you know how much disc golf stuff runs. Park and Rec is all about having the best we can get. As far as what Mark posted, he was right as far as what has happen. I am going to try and keep the course marked until the baskets and tees go in so that way people can at least get a feel for it and play is an an object. If you want directions I can post them later or email them to whoever wants them. Yes, the course will be on the directory once it is "officially" open and playable. Once again Parks and Recs wants it done right and they want to have sort of a grand opening event for the course (not like a tourney more of a fun day). Any other things you want to ask just post here and I will try to answer them or im sure an answer can be posted here.

Hey Tony, the web site is going to happen. I need to sit down and discuss and design with Richard Beck and Nolan since they are the ones that have the domain name and the space to host the web site. Also both of them also have web design experience so that is sweet. Nolan was saying that we might be able to set up email addresses for the site and golfers so that would be good, just have to see if we can. We actually need to do this soon since the web site will be tied in to sponsorship by having a page that list the sponsors and has links to their web sites. The address more than likely will be greenvillediscgolf.com or something very similar.
As far as the next work day or meeting, we need to talk to Parks and Rec and see if they can do some work now that we cleared those areas. As soon as we find out something we will let people know. Also we need to have a meeting to finalize the Candy Fund Raiser disc that we are going to get. I am going to talk to Innova again to today also about baskets. Hopefully we will have some final answers by next Monday at doubles. See ya at the course, and I am off to West Virginia to see my better half.

Did a little research for you Lowe...
The name of the park is West Meadowbrook Park.
If you go to http://ci.greenville.nc.us/ you can find very limited and I do mean limited information about the park by searching around on the site. It probably isn't much help, but thought that I might share since Scotty is MIA.

I just did some looking of my own on that website at the various parks. There are a handful of parks that seem to be very large. Perhaps if all goes well with the current course under works, Greenville could have another couple of courses within the next 5-10 years.
After growing up playing ECU's course, it is just hard to phathom Greenville actually being a place playing a "real" disc golf course and then driving to another "real" disc golf course.
scottfaison
Jul 31 2004, 06:58 PM
Thanks for posting the information for me Mark while I was MIA. Greenville does have some other parks that could be future courses and also some land that is availible to them that are not yet designated for anything specific yet. Parks and Rec also knows that in the future we could want to pursue the installation of another public course, but for now we are concentrating and working on making this first course a reality. Stew and I have a meeting on Tueday with Parks again about getting some additional work from them in some of the rougher areas. These are the areas that we have worked on to remove debris and trash to make it possible for them to bushhog. I will post here and inform of how the meeting went and what areas were covered. Last time we had a meeting with them they were very quick to repsond and get done what we had asked them. They have been so cooperating and effecient in working with. Also I will post the website that I know that has information about the parks in Greenville so others can look and see, but off hand I can not remember the site name. See everyone at doubles on Monday!

ECU is also looking to put up another course.
They are putting up a new complex with soccer fields and inturmural fields. They also have contacted Harold Duval about designing a course in the complex. Also, rumors have been flying around that the current ECU course will be taken out and made into a parking lot. Nothing is offical about this, but here is what I have been told, in the order that thet seem to think will happen.
1. The new course will be ready in 2007, and at that time the current course will be taken out.
2. The new course will be ready in 2007, and the current course will stay there.
3. The current course will be left there, no new course
4. The current course will be taken out, no new course.

The ECU course has been rumored to be a parking lot ever since I started playing there ... in 1995. I will believe when I see it. I believe the outside holes to be too important to the tailgaiters... Who wants to tailgate in a parking lot, when it was a grass field?

We had another meeting today with Parks at the site and things went well. They are going to do some more work for us in the harder areas and some of the weed killing. We asked about spray for the poison ivy and they said that they could do that along with getting rid of the ground bees that Tony found. A few things we do need to do is move some of the limbs out of the way on hole 4 basket area so they can bushhog, trim some of the smaller stumps on holes 8-9 so they don't get a flat tire while trying to bushhog that also, and move the tree in 12's fairway that is laying across. Once we do that, these areas will be ready to mow down to nothing and actually giving us a fairway. They will be going back out to keep cutting what they have all ready cleared so that we don't have growth coming back and taking over what we have done. Eventually parks would like to see grass growing in the areas that the weeds are in. Overall, they are very happy with what we have done and what we plan to do. One thing the local golfers will like, they will put out as many trashcans as we like once the course is in!!
We looked at potential standing water areas today and they do not look like they will be as bad as we thought. The woods (8-10) seem to be doing ok with all this rain.
I will post more later, but for now I have been called to play Socom II.

I went out to the course with Scotty and made suggestions prior to his proposal to city parks and rec. I was just curious to see the progress of the course. Sounds like you guys are close to buying a basket or two and was just wondering if the course was close to being in shape to receive those baskets. Also, whether or not I should bring my discs with me to throw a few holes. However, considering trunk space or lack there of I think that the discs will remain here in Charlotte.

workday saturday 10-2 and then we are hoping to play it afterwards, bring your baskets!
scottfaison
Sep 20 2004, 11:02 PM
Yep..just what he said. I am not sure how many holes we will have baskets for or will have playable but I think a good number of them. I will contact Parks and Rec and see if they can recut the grass on some of the holes that have grown up some due to the weather. We should be able to play 1,2,3,maybe 4 with a shorter pin placement,5,6,7. Holes 8-10 depend on work and ground conditions since we know they were prone to flood(something we are in the process of making a plan to fix). Hole 11 depends on the work done on the basket area but should be ok. Hole 12 needs a lot of work so I am doubting it. Hole 13 just needs the fairway mowed. Hole 14 just needs basket area mowed and 15 needs to be mowed. Hole 16 is the other hole that needs a lot of work. Holes 17 and 18 need mowing. So, if Parks can cut the grass we will have a lot to look foward to. We will also use some of that time as a club meeting to discuss some things. So bring a basket and bring some friends. If enough people want we can turn it into a doubles and I will get the disc and bring them out and treat it like a mini doubles. Any questions just email me or call or contact a club member.

OK..the suprise is what Mills said but I will elaborate. We are going to have our baskets by mid October. I will be picking up the baskets at the USDGC from Innova. They are allowing us to pick the baskets up earlier than we had planned and they are working with us on the financial end. We decided also to put the baskets in first so that the course can be playable..this will help wear down some more of the areas that need clearing a little more. The tee pads will come next then the tee signs last. As soon as the baskets start making their way into the ground I will post and let everyone know. To be honest, having the baskets this soon would not be possible without the help and support from the people at Innova.

Scotty, make a temp tee pad that is only 30 feet away... wait.. make that 10 feet so he has a chance :o
so should i set some rules up for that ace since i have a pdga official tuning in?? any normal tee pad, long or short, if i ace the shot then i sponsor the hole. ill even throw in a bonus....if i black ace a hole ill sponsor one too. ill keep the 500 in a special account so when the time comes it will be ready. i need to challenge you anyways because we never got to finish the round. 8 downs with three holes remaining....im game when you get the baskets in!

WOW..this board came alive while I was gone LOL. Mills, I will take you up on your offer and your challenge when the baskets get in. Just checking in, back in West Virginia, but will be home soon. The 3 Rivers series has WMP listed on its schedule for next year starting in January so thats a goal for the club. Sponsorship packages will be done when I get back and Stew and I have talked about some meetings we need to do. Also there will be some kind of club meeting next week so be ready.

WORKDAY..Saturday..October 23..putting the sleeves in for the baskets..meet at Pygmy Man's house between 9-9:30 AM. After 10 AM go to the course. Try and make it to Pygmy's house..need major help loading the supplies for the cement. Meeting with Parks and Rec went great..they are providing the cement for the baskets and we believe for the tees also. They are also allowing us to use an auger to drill the holes for the baskets so that saves time and energy. Pin placements have been set..a few tee pads are still being decided for their exact location..also a few "tourney pin locations" have been looked at for use to make a more challenging course in a 4th round type thing. Also, potentail sponsors can contact anyone in the club to find out more. Keep up the god work club.

Sweet news..baskets are going in the ground on Saturday. If you can help please do..and this is the easy part since the sleeves have all ready been put in the ground. Pygmy has offered free ham biscuits to those who show up at his house around 10:30 AM to help load up the baskets into the trucks. This is not the hardest work..trust me since MTL and me did it ourselves in Rock Hill. If you can't make it to his place, meet at the course at 11 AM or any times after. Hopefully with enough people, the course can be played after the baskets are put up. See you soon and hopefully enough people will show up Saturday.

More sweet news..first "unofficial monthly" will be November 14. This is a Saturday and tee times and entry fees have not been decided yet. Once they are more will be posted. Tee pads are natural for now and not sure of the exact date that the concrete pads are going in so be prepared for natural. Also remember that this course is still in progress so forgive our mess..hopefully more will be done by this date. Any questions ask, and look for more info once decided.
come on guys.....cut me some slack. get mark out there and we can play one on one to see who will be the redheaded step child of the greenville disc golf club. and scotty....once the baskets are up.......im gonna ace run every hole that can be aced from the short pads until i get one and then ill have a check for 500 for the club.

Once again when more info about the monthly is up I will post it. Also the same thing for the get together. Anyone is welcome to come to either or both events. So play golf in the morning and afternoon, then at night come eat and drink my food and take home my plastic..if you can. Can't you feel the holiday spirit coming. I would like to congratulate GVDG's own Little Scotty Faison on setting the Meadowbrook course record at -12, beating out Scwebby by 1 stroke for the #1 GVDG bag tag, also for accomplishing the first ACE on hole #12, you will go down as the first ace, which is fitting being the new course was your idea to start, thanks for all the hard work the GVDG members put in to make this course happen, but we still got a lot to do, see yall at FDGC, which ought to be a good time, the Knapps never let down

Thanks to everyone that has been a part of making this a reality..a public course in Greenville. We are not done yet, but we have done a lot in a short amount of time and it is because of the hard work of so many people. It looks so nice out there to see baskets and tee markers in the ground. Ok..have a few post to make..just breaking them up to make easier to read. Jody and I talked and we are going to try something new. GVDG "unnoficial monthly" is Nov 13 and 3 Rivers is Nov 14. Both will be at "The Meadow" (what the cool kids call the new course..and it sounds better when you say it like Cartman) and will each be seperate events. The thing new will be that there will be a combined event too. Anyone that is playing both days can pay $5 more and compete for an overall trophy in their division. The rest of the money that is raised will go the club. The scores from both days will be counted together just as if it was a 2 day tournament. Sounds fun so come out. Even if you can only make one day feel free to come and enjoy. Much thanks to Jody for this great idea and if anyone has complaints about it..just blame me LOL

Much to do..little time..must measure holes, set tee pads areas, take pictures, make park map, prepare for monthly, kill weeds, talk to Parks and thanks them and ask them to do more. Keep playing golfers, it was great to see people out there today. Thanks to Hoffmann and Schweb for coming out and playing..your advice was very helpful. I might have the course record for now..but Schweb has the roller record at -8...that is more impressive to me. MTL gets the record for disc caught in highest vines...and if was off a kick off a tree about eye level and ened up 15 ft high. Two words about the ace....Sweet Karma ;)

Just so you know i should really be writing my history paper that is due tomorrow, but it can wait.
Just got called over to a design company in greenville to fix some of their computers. So i started looking around and noticed a site map for the North Campus Site. Thats the land ECU got and are planning on putting in the intramural sport complex. Was just wasting time looking until i noticed frisbee golf writen on the map. I know everyone has been talking about a course out there but this was a plan with an area clearly reserved for disc golf. Not sure if this was just a proposal they had or if this is a plan. If anyone has any other information or possibly something more current(this was from November 03) let me know.
The land is huge, developing land both west and east of Greenville Blvd.(with the majority on the east side). Here is what they had listed.
west of Gville blvd=10 outparcels.
East of Gville blvd.=20 outparcels
huge residential area
Picnic ground
12 soccer fields
6 softball fields (built over 6 of the soccer fields)
1 Soccer stadium
2 rugby fields
a skate park
4 basketball courts
2 pools
6 tennis courts
6 acre pond with beach area
4 beach volleyball courts.
6 acres marked for disc golf.
just thought i'd say something since this thread is about new courses in Greenville. anyone know if what i saw was the plans they are going to use? is this old news i haven't heard yet?
: ) :

Nov 02 2004, 03:18 PM
When Rob and I re-started the ECU DG club we were told about this land. The course that is there now will eventually be a parking lot. The land that you speak of is out past the intramual fields. I wouldn't worry about it, everyone that is there now will probably be gone before any of that happens.

Heres what I know
I was told that one of four scenarios will happen.
- a course will be put in (Harold Duval has been contacted and is intrested in designing it) and the current course will be taken out.
- new course, old course still there
- no new course, old course still there
- no course at all.
From what I heard, that is the order of what will probably happen

: ) :
I should be there at Thanksgiving. If anyone wants to get up and play that weekend, more than likely that Satuday, lemme know.

Oh God don't let the TT boys see that.
Best misunderstood trim line ever-
Cam Todd was thanking everyone in Hickory for working on the course. The TT boys were standing behind him. He pointed in the direction of the course and it happened to be right at the TT guys and said "I'd like to thank all the trimmers"
CuTT responded "oh your welcome"

The baskets have ther numbers on them now so you can tell which hole you are playing..thanks to Tony, PJ and Mills for the help doing that during the round. We are seeing a lot of casual golfers out there which is great since we want them to enjoy the new course as much as we do..can't wait to get the long tees in. Dont forget Nov 13 and 14, the 2 events at the new course each day..hope to see a lot of folks there. :)

Almost forgot 2 more things. The get together at my clubhouse is set for December 4th along with a monthly at the new course that day. Also any old used disc you no longer want, give to Pygmy Man. He is going to try and give them to the kids in the neighborhoods around the park so they can play the course if they want and they will also know that those funny yellow things are baskets and not jungle gyms lol.

Ok coming from west of Greenville on 264..come into town and turn left on Hwy 11 (Memorial Drive)..follow this and take a right on Moore St..this is not a major intersection so your key is it is right across from the airport and after you cross the Tar River bridge. Once you are on Moore you can take either entrance into the park. If you turn right on Legion this will take you to the main entrance and put you by holes 7 and 8..if you go farther on Moore it will dead end where you have to turn right or left..this is Melody Rd..turn right and this will take you into the park by the Picnic shelter and hole 1...here is RandMcNally directions..
