OK guys, a little bit of info here. I never had the chance to play it but, Laurel Springs is back up for sale. I saw in an article in Disc Golf Magazine that the people who bought the 50+ acre farm that the legendary course used to be on, are selling there estate and relocating to Florida. Wish I had the $800,000 there are selling it for because they completely refurbished the house on the property, and all of the tee pads and fairways are pretty much still there. The only thing is the Christmas trees that used to garnish fairways and hillsides have not been replanted since '96 when the farm was sold. But that can easily be fixed with a little manual labor. I mean, if you're buying a farm you have to expect to get dirty fixin' it up. So, if anyone has been thinking about moving to the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains and wanted to buy a farm of the Parkway, this would be the dream home/playground for and disc golfer.

Hey folks, just wanted to say hey and wish eveyone well..I will be back in town hopefully for the workday, just waiting on a package of disc to get here for the Ice Bowl....played some golf today..they have $5 doubles going on..come to find out they pay like the top 2 spots or something like that..decided to play with Cindy and Abby instead...going to play doubles Sunday morning then maybe go snorkeling....and in Cindy and my opinion the GVDG golfers are more fun, have better attitudes and dress better LOL..and I think better golfers but I am going to play and hopefully I will find some cool people to play golf with..some of them did seem really nice..but being the unknown new kid in town makes it hard to fit in right away..not all places have golfers like you guys who welcome everyone..try and stay warm and get ready for the Ice Bowl :)

Now some sadder news about ECU's course.
Construction on a field house for the baseball team began today and trees were taken out of the course and we have lost 4 holes.
I had to redesign these holes this morning.
The new layout will be....
Hole 1 - Tees from 2's old tee, short hyzer to the middle.
Hole 2 - Tees from alt. 2's tee and to the same pin placement.
Hole 3 - Same tee - tight hyzer to new pin near 4's tee
Hole 18 - Same tee - holy hyzers after middle tree
If you have suggestions of something better please email me at
[email protected] and let me know.

Seriously, if your not from New Bern than I met you at ECU. Crap, I spent the last four years walking through those woods. I fell in love with this game out there. I talked a lot of sh:t out there. We drank a lot of beers and smoked a LOT of green out there. Hell, without ECU DEP golf might be non existent. As Joni put it best:

For a long time, back when you slippaz where just baby booties down east golf was ECU/Farm Life and Jacksonville....anything east of 95 was forgotten by the rest of the state..a lot has happen since the late 90's...when I first came here and started playing we had 4 courses in eastern NC (ECU, Farm Life, Arnette all the way in Fayetteville, Jacksonville)..now there are at least 10 and counting...a lot of people have made their mark and worked hard to get things going in this area..so my suggestion to you is grab a drink and raise a toast to all golfers east of 95..

And there was the word "might" in that sentence. Use to be the only golfers that travelled to tourneys were from G-Vegas..your just reaping the benefits of all the golfers who came before you just like future golfers will thank you for your work at the Castle..I still need to get down there to that course..and by the way since I did not get a chance to tell you earlier..congrads on the 1st cash..and no I am not starting a fight..just having a witty banter with you..so shut up and have that toast I told you to have :)

Let me restate my position. Before there was Jacksonville, before Farm Life, before NB or K town or even Zeb, there was ECU disc golf. Without ECU many of the courses in the Downeast would not exist because many people would have never played. ECU was one of the first 3 courses in the state. It is the godfather of DEP golf.

Just curious and out of nostalgia..who are some of the friends you made while playing at the ECU course? This is for anyone that wants to respond :)
I used to ride my bike out there during the summers and play 3-6 rounds in the mornings, then catch a ride with my mom and play another 3-6 rounds at night. Once I turned 16, I was selling discs out the back of my car. I know I met a lot of cats on that course. Hell, I was in weddings for two of the guys I met out there. Here's the most infuential group of peeps I met on that parcel of land (close to order of influence):
Ad Rock, Tim Weeks, Scotty, Russell Grey, Lew, Stew, Toma, Bonkowski, Weldin (and that **** Kenny Aviar he used to drain putts with non stop), Barry Sealy, Jimmy Shot, Bertitis, Mike D, Stoppleworth, Antonaci, and an [*****] load of faces I can't put a name to.
Appologies to those I have forgotten. Applications to make the list are being accepted.

Now some sadder news about ECU's course.
Man that sux! I was in school at ECU and read about DG in a school info handout. My roomate and I went to Christenbury Gym, traded our student ID's for a pair of Duece's, and off we went to find the course. That was the first time I ever threw a golf disc at a basket. My first round of DG was in 1991 in Greenville, my first ace on that course was in 2004. LOL. good times....
Gotta get another round in.

In answer to my own question, I have met a lot of cool people and some close friends at ECU. Some of the ones that stand out in my mind are Mark, Timmay Weeks, Lew, Barry Sealey, Stew, Toma, Bonkowsky, Rock, Stoppy, Waye, Steve Rogers, and many more. All the new golfers these past 2 years have meant a lot too, but I was naming the golfers I have known for years. We really do seem more like a family than a bunch of dorky frisbee throwing folks, even though we are
Apologies to anyone I left off that I didn't think of. And yes I will even miss the math teacher who goes walking there.

Wow..thats a disc you don't hear about anymore...I think it was about 1992 when me and some friends got some frisbees from Kmart and tried playing..later in 1997 we tried again at Cedar Hills with real disc..but it was at ECU in 98 when I really began playing largely because of the golfers there..

man to be honest, I almost started crying when I left the course today.
My first tournament ace hole no longer exists (number 18). I have met so many people out there its not even funny.
I just had to make a business decision so to speak that 18 holes were better than 14.
When I was in High School, disc golf was just an afterthough. Some of you may know that I played high school golf and that was my main sport. When I came down here I was such a bad golfer - couldnt putt or anything - I just could throw a long ways.
Since golf was so expensive, I started playing disc golf when I got here.
I still remember my first round out there. Didn't know there was a mando on 2 - got lost as hell in the field, and was stoked when I shot what I thought was a very hot -6. Now if I shoot -6 I would just quit for the day.
Without a doubt my best memory of the course will be the craziest round of my life and the round that changed my disc golf career for ever.
It was a 3 rivers tournament and I was warming up and I was just putting horribly (i didnt use to straddle putt). It was drizzly and not that fun of a day to be out there.
I was screwing around warming up and starting straddle putting cuz my normal putt wasnt working. And ching ching ching ching man I was draining em.
I was playing with Eddie Jason Myers and I can't remember the fourth that round and I told Eddie that I Was straddle putting in warm ups and he was like I bet you won't do it again - so we start on 3 - have about a 25 footer that I had to straddle ( behind the big tree) regardless of if I did or not - draino. hole 4 - get behind the trees in front of the basket - another forced straddle - draino. Same scenario on 5 - draino.
At this point I'm like ok I'm straddling the rest of the round.
Pared 6 7 8 9 10
Then I birdied 11 12 13 14 15.
Par 16.
So I'm -8 with 4 to go.
Hit the tree on the right early on 17 take a 6. - yeah a 6.
Ace 18 (first tournament ace)
Duece 1, then miss the mando on 2 and finish with a 5.
So I shot a 49 with no 4's, an ace and 8 birds.
The ace on 18 was Scotty's turkey ctp and this was also the first time I had met him. He met me on the tuesday of thanksgving and bought me a turkey like he promissed.
I will never forget that round, any of yall, or the course that tought me to love this game.

Good post Tizzle.
I got the chance to tell Seally thanks for teaching me how to throw the annie this year. It was at the Horizens Park classic.
Barry sold me some lightning discs. I had asked him what every new golfers asks, "what disc goes right?" He sold me a bearcat, and took the time to teach me.
Sounds like he did the same thing for some other folks.
I had my first 300 foot drive out there. hole 11. I will always remember that drive.
I played with a few friends one time, we were teeing off on 12, and a friend of mine (nameless to protect the innocent) had a bad case of grip-lock, and actually hit someone in our group standing BEHIND him. We laughed for years about that drive.
Same guy, same hole, more grip-lock, he shanked a drive across the street, towards the parking lot on the right, if your out there, his drive landed near the stop sign.

Too bad i never got to ace 3 or 18, i think i hit chains or basket on the hole atleast 40 times a piece, especially 3, and now i dont get to ace them at all, my funniest moment on whole 3 was MTL trying to record an ace on camera, after throwing about 130 shots he finally got one to go in, about 30 seconds after teh battery in the camera died, HAHAHA

Here are some of my more memorable memories from the ECU course:
Slam 6 for the ace, but it spits out the back. Ad Rock fakes for his wallet and says, "Oh, I was about to give you the $5 for the ace, but I guess I'll keep it." I proceed to calmly ace hole 7 and ask for my $5.
Skip acing hole 3 with a Roc of all discs.
Toma yanking a drive on the skins hole that plays to hole 12 so bad that it lands in the parking lot across the street. He attempts to throw his disc back towards the hole and it gets wedged in the power lines. You could read his name on the disc, but there was no way to get it down. That thing was there for 3 or 4 years.
I aced hole 9 from hole 6's tee pad at the same time a disc from hole 9's tee flies by the basket. I go nuts, cause, well, I got an ace! The group on hole 9 proceeds to go ape because they think that they had an ace.
Watching Stoppy drain 3-4 beers in the amount of time that it takes me to putt 3-4 putts.
Watching Gallagher almost get a worst shot ace on hole 4. He aced with a roc, and then slammed but fell out with a stingray.
Watching any and all of Bert's tantrums. Man were those funny. Cussing, kicking, picking up all of his discs while cussing.
Barry Sealy jumping up and down behind Lew in order to prevent him from making a putt on the final hole of the skins 9.
The first time I aced a port-a-potty on hole 16.
Scotty, you got anymore?
Well ****....I knew this BS would happen eventually. I guess the timing is good though, considering we just put the new course in a few months ago. TomA, Mike B, Joe W, Rock, and Lew are the guys I looked up to and wanted to play like when I first stepped out there. If it wasn't for watching Bonkowski rip a disc, I probably wouldn't have the D that I have today. I got my one and only tourney ace at the last doubles the last year Lew ran them...it was for $135 and the beer hole and pitch black....sweeett :D I'm gonna miss those holes like I miss old hole 1 in between the pine trees :( Can't wait to play with some of those guys again...I know I'll see Lew at the Farm Life Open...a tourney you can count me in every year :D

Some of my favorite stories...
Like Jon Vee said, I was trying to get an ace on tape. Well I walk up with 117 discs and try for like an hour. I smacked the crap outta chains finally and it fell out. 3 throws later, I skip a CE Spider in. When I went to the camera, it was off. THe last shot on there was the one slamming chains - so it literally shut off about a min. before I aced.
I saw Monica get hit walking from 3 - 4 with a disc and Eddie proceeded to throw the disc towards one - the guy played it from where Eddie threw it.
I saw a guy get a disc stuck in the trees of 15 behind 15's basket - but he was playing 16.
I brusied my tailbone once one 16 after I fell on the tee
well what can i say, i will miss ECU played in my first PDGA turny there shot a 12 over par(1 round) in the rain came back and cashed met alot of kewl people, almost got in a fight with MTL, (running that mouth) lol, but he did not know me then, got 2 aces on hole 8 one in DB, also all the ppl that helped over the past year to improve my game thank you. Ok one story I laugh at..Barry Sealey and Tim Weeks were playing a round..Barry always liked to gamble a little so he was playing Tim for $2..the chances of Barry beating Tim were non existant...on hole 9 Tim had Barry by 5 strokes all ready..Barry told Tim he would pay him now for that round if he would start a new bet for the next 9 holes for the same amount..Tim said yes and said to Barry " so basically you want to pay for this ***** kicking and put another one on layaway"...Barry said yes and threaten to choke him..Tim laughed and left with Barry's money after beating him twice in 1 round..it was a touching moment between them

Thank you Mrs. Scotty, and Scotty for the gift for Johnathan Michael.

The Ice Bowl was great today..we have a nice turn out with 28 people who braved the cold for a good cause..We ended up raising $262 and 113 pounds of food...I think that is great for such a short notice..the giving spirit today was very cool to see..I will have scores and highlights up tonight after I get some groceries for the road...what we did today made me proud to call myself a Greenville Disc Golfer...almost makes me want to stay here until I look at the temperture..plus I miss Mrs Scotty..more to come tonight

OK..this just in...MTL has won best caddy because the judges are apissed with him...seriously though..he put himself up for auction..the winner got him as a caddy, the use of his chair and one free mulligan per hole for the first round..thanks for helping out like that even though you couldnt play today..and thanks for all the food you brought (over 20 canned goods)...and yes Pygmy bought his services fo $30...so now the going rate for a wookie is set /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
