Apr 10 2006, 03:31 PM
They have a site but it has not been updated in a while...
wind can make a disc do a lot of crazy things such as make it more and less stable...it all depends on the direction of the wind and the angle of release of the disc...and then there are times that no matter what ya do, you get a weird hitch in your swing :) just ask soemone for tips and when I am back in town I will gladly talk to you about wind golf (I learned the painful lesson early on in my golf career) lol

I still remember when Scotty helped me with my wind game....
I've learned there are two real keys to playing in the wind - plan ahead, and expect the worst possible scenario.
By planning ahead and invisioning what the wind will do to your shot before you throw it, you can compensate for it. It's a lot like disc selection, or the theory of it.
I've also learned the expect the worst possible thing is a great way of playing safe. Perfect example, this weekend, I had a 30 footer in some wind. It was coming right to left and was having a real tough time deciding if it was more tail or headwind (headind raises a putt, tail wind lowers a putt). I decided that if I played it as a headwind, no matter what it actually was, I would be ok, so I aimed low (where I would aim for a headwind putt.
I would have rather had it be a tailwind thining it was a headwind and slam it to the ground then have it be a headwind thinking it was a tail, which would have sent the disc way over the basket (i would ahve been aiming high)
The putt turned out to be a tailwind and it dropped it to the ground, but I had my par, instead of a possible bogey. By planning ahead and trying to avoid the worst possible situation (blowing over the top of the basket) I was able to avoid a 3 putt.

It was one of the most memorable days of my life (not just in disc golf). I forgot to say that when we were on the tee of hole 27 (one of the best golf holes I have ever seen), I saw a wild turkey running across the fairway at the bottom of the canyon. And it just is not golf with Cindy if we don't see a snake and we managed to see one before we left.

Good shooting Scotty! The Canyon is one of my favs too! During the pro event a few baskets were in longer positions. Holes 11, 20, and and 26. Also 23 and 26 had some added OB water from the massive amounts of rain they got the week before. Just letting you know in case you are basing it off of that event.

Apr 21 2006, 05:10 PM
I am wondering if the holes were numbered different (the last 9) for the event since some of the holes you mentioned were all ready in long positions (and no visible way of pushing them back. Also because talking about standing water has me wondering the areas also. I was just mentioning the rating more as a witty reply to MTL. I felt like it was a casual round I played and had fun. The distances can be deceiving the first time ya play them. I did not throw many extra shots and scored only the first drives. Would love to actually play an event there since I have some knowledge of the course and layout.

The May monthly will have a new twist and new location. It will still be a GVDG event and we will still be celebrating the birthday of the club, but we will be doing it at Kinston as part of their C-tier event. The entry fees for the monthly alone will be the same ($10 for pro, $5 all amateur divisions) but you also have to be a part of the King's Cup event. We will use the first 2 rounds of the event (both rounds on Saturday) as the monthly. Anyone can play in the side event and you can be in a different division as you are in the King's Cup (ex if you play advanced in the King's Cup, you could be listed as pro in the monthly). You can sign up for this monthly on that Saturday morning AFTER you sign up for the King's Cup. This will hopefully get more people into their event. Also, we will have cake and ice cream as a celebration but I doubt the pinata will be back this year.

Todd Markov has ordered many disc with his famous night sniper stamp on them. He has both regular and glow disc. The regular disc will be priced the same as GVDG. The glow disc (and these are champion glow disc) are being used to help raise funds for private courses in this area. These disc are going for $20 each and $10 from that will go to the course that he is selling them at. You can buy the regular disc at anytime, but you can only get the glow disc when they are for sell at a private course (TnT, Farm Life, ex). Help support a good cause and get some cool plastic with a hot stamp.

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised A glass of water and asked,
"how heavy is this glass of water? "
Answers Called out ranged from 20g to 500g.
The lecturer replied
"The absolute weight doesn't matter.
It depends on how long you try to hold it.
"If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem.
If I hold it for an hour,
I'll have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day,
You'll have to call an ambulance.
"In each case, it's the same weight,
But the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes. "
He continued,
"And that's the way it is with stress management.
If we carry our burdens all the time,
Sooner or later,
As the burden becomes increasingly heavy,
We won't be able to carry on. "
"As with the glass of water,
You have to put it down for a while and rest before holding
It again.
When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden. "
"So, before you return home tonight,
Put the burden of work down.
Don't carry it home.
You can pick it up tomorrow.
Whatever burdens you're carrying now,
Let them down for a moment if you can. "
"Relax; pick them up later after you've rested.
Life is short.
Enjoy it!
And then he shared some ways of dealing wit h the burdens of life:
* Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue.
* Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
* Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.
* If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.
* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.
* It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
* Never buy a car you can't push.
* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand on.
* Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.
* Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.
* The second mouse gets the cheese.
* When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.
* Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.
* You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.
* Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.
* We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names , and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.
" A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

Other than the fact that I couldn't throw any drives straight, and the only two I did throw straight we didn't take b/c they went in the tree/bush/briar patch on 13 or Sean's were better, yeah! As long as I play better this weekend, I'm good.

The pleasure was ours, man what a great weekend! Congrats Wop on a nice run away win with some nice consistant golf. You deserved it brother! Thanks again to all of the guys form GVDG for you help, encouragement, and particiaption. You are no doubt our biggest supporters and our sister club....Hope to be getting to dubs in G-ville now that things will start to slow down some.

In my opinion, after playing with these guys and seeing the scores consistently put up by these players, I feel these players in NC are ready for the jump.

Sean
Wop
Carter Allen
Jeremy Bond

I thought I already made that jump. Well not all the way. And I think Fred's name needs to be on that list too. He can't miss, when he is healthy.

I totally dig and understand wanting a shot at am worlds and I totally respect what you have done of the last year in preparing yourself for worlds
As for Fred, he's a great player who has improved drammatically and very soon. He has a kink or two to work on (well who doesn't) but if he can put it all together, hes gonna be a solid pro.
Out of the list of 5 I gave, I think Wop has the best chance to be the best pro. I think he has more of a pro style of game personally.

Meadow Long - 47
Boo!!!
so since im stayin in advanced i dont wanna hear any bagger crap. that was an amazing round of dubs tonite. that is how doubles is supposed to be played. i drive he puts, he drives i putt. hope that one will stand for a while. where is the camera and trophy!!!
scottfaison
May 26 2006, 12:01 AM
The camera is MIA and the trophy is bolted down at my house. I said this after I shot the doubles white tee record that we needed a doubles trophy for the blues also. I will look into getting a doubles trophy for the blues also since that score deserves it. I just can't let ya have my doubles trophy now can I?

Happy Birfday Mr. Faison. Did you ever find that Teebird that "hooked up" yesterday? I can't believe we couldn't find it. You should treat yourself to a new one for your bday, along with a few beers and some frolf! Thanks for the ups MTL, I hope that someday I can compete on the top level, and afford it too!! Fred has overcome alot to get his game back. He's progressed quickly this past year and definitely has alot of heart. He's the first golfer I've met to go lefty instead of stop playing (Divot)! Carter has started playin real solid too. That 51 this weekend was probably one of the most solid rounds I've ever watched. I shot 54 and felt like I got killed. Sean and Jeb have been playing at a higher level for sometime now, and have shown they can compete up there. I haven't seen J Bond play recently, but he's definitely got his game going. After worlds, we'll see if I can pull out a top 5 in the Mullet Division.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. I never did find that TeeBird but I did go play some golf today (shot a personal best from the Meadow Whites) and the beer and a nice cigar will be for tonight. I also went and saw the X-Men movie (good choice if you liked the first 2). I had to say it was a relaxing birthday and should be a good weekend. Good luck to everyone who is competing and drive safe. Please remember what this holiday is about though.

No I was thinking more about the people who gave their lives for the defense of this country so that we can enjoy our freedoms. If you have ever seen Arlington on this weekend, it is a site that you will never forget and one that will make you think how lucky you are. Remember, some have paid the ultimate price for freedom.
