Hope - Pros enjoyed added cash...and AMs the huge payout.
Glad to hear so many people say "I heard this was an easy course...no way!"...as they turned in the many rounds in the high 70s' on this par 66 course.
Just wanted to say, that I though it was a nice thing to see so many people just relaxing after the awards, and not running to their cars to get home...Landon and I, were watching the end of the US OPEN, and people were still playing the course hours after the tourny' was done.
Thanks to ALL.......see you next year !

grange monthly/crabfest saturday 10:00 grange time, HH work/play on sunday 10:30 HH time- bring weedeaters, rechargeable screw guns if you've got them- we will be installing 2 bridges at the least so be prepared to get your feet wet briefly as well. also hope to get the 27 hole set-up in the ground. will probably not bush hog course until closer to the event 7/14 but we've had so little rain that the grass is super thin anyway.

OK. A few announcements. Big Branch will be set up nearly the same as is was for BRAWL #1 in December. It is a par 58 course with a 1000ft par five and two sweet par fours. I had announced at the Golden Hills Open that we would play a par 54 course, but since the grass isn't growing that much I'm playing the real course. This course is awesome and some say it's better than Timber Ridge. Pass the word.

You could also play Bennett's Creek, if you like tight, wooded fairways. It's probably closest to Chesapeake. If you go to New Quarter, which is the best, make sure to take loads of insect repellant. Ticks and Chiggers are in full force out there this year. When are you going to be in the area?
Whatever you know that Gonzalez is a lover not a fighter! What time are the workday festivities starting? Can we play also? You know I Gotta throw some 1000 rated rounds to keep up my rating!

I have had some good times @ Duck Golf...but it would make more sense to me to move the Battlefield Open into this date. The battlefield Open is held too close to VO.
With a better date, Richmond's central location, the format of the "2 killer B's" (somehow integrated to work with ODDS points) and a little help given to Chris. We could make the Battlefield Open what it once was.

If you have wheels, Newport News plays 5:30ish on Tuesday nights. $5 and $1 acepot. Format changes week to week depending on participant levels. It's a great course to play and relatively easy to play for a first time. Let me know if you'd like directions. The other courses in the area either don't have any organized weeklies, or play on other days (Monday evenings at Bayville - VA Beach).

Directions are in the course directory.
But... from I-64 East, take the Ft. Eustis Blvd. (Route 105) exit towards Yorktown (Exit 250 I believe). Take a left at the light onto Jefferson Ave., then down about 0.25 miles and take a right into the park.
It's a pay to play course, but I don't know if the fee for the weekly covers the greens fee or not.

Scott-
The directions to Newport News from the airport is take I-64 West toward Richmond. Take exit 250B (Jefferson Ave. Rt.143) and at the end of the ramp take a left, proceed past the Main Park entrance across from the Fire Station and continue west on 143 just past the lake on the right and make a right into the campsite office. I believe the fee is $2 a day now. But if you play the weekly it comes out of your entry fee. Tuesday's weekly start around 6:00 depending on the turnout. We offer Open and Am Divisions.Good luck with the traffic on I-64 between the airport and Newport News, afternoon traffic is usually terrible in either direction. Just be patient an bring lots of beer. Hope this helps. If you have more questions give me a call. My cell is 757-254-1185.

The most prestigious disc golf tournament of the year, and it's not even played on a disc golf course.
I liken it to playing the entire NFL season on a 100 yard rectangle and then playing the Super Bowl on a 60 yard oval. Or playing the World Series on a 60 foot rhombus. Different field, different sport.
I think Harold's the best designer there is (besides Mule), but, in my opinion, that ain't golf. Sorry.
I didn't quit by the way. I had to withdraw due to an injury--sprained pride. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I couldn't disagree with you anymore Vince...I think it's golf at it's finest...Every shot is a pressure shot and there is so much risk/reward in that course it's amazing...It's impossible to be off your game and come in with a good score.
I find it hard to believe people who have actually played in the USDGC wouldn't think it was the best tournament they've played...Besides the stellar golf, the professional atmosphere and the work those guys put into it tops any other tournament.
The yellow rope is the same for all...don't throw there..
Can't wait to get back to Rock Hill..hopefully it's this year.
Congrats Naved, you'll love the tourney...It's an amazing GOLF course.

Actually, we feel the same about everything but the course/rope. I think it's the best tournament of the year. It's the most prestigious. It's hands down the most professional. The amenities are absolutely amazing. Thank you Mr. Poole and staff.
I make a distinction between the tournament and the course. Tournament-first class. Course-too gimmicky.
Don't you think Harold would trade all the yellow rope for wooded rough if he had a magic wand? I think he would. Having all that rope means that Harold doesn't think that his course is a good test for a championship as-is.
If they would just plant a few trees along the fairways each year, they wouldn't need all of that rope eventually. They've been playing the USDGC for almost a decade now. If they had planted some vigorous trees like Polonia, Catalpa, or Pin Oaks, for example, then they would be huge trees by now, and there would actually be some rough on that course. In my opinion, a few well placed trees on holes 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12, 16 and 17 could be equally as penal to poor shots without using any rope.
The tournament is the standard of excellence, I just wish that the course was also. Either move the tournament or plant some trees. Just my opinion.

We're are playing Big Branch which is on a separate part of the farm than the Timber Ridge course. It's a mostly open course that has a 1000 ft par five and three other true par 4s. I'm working on the course map, and hopefully can measure some distances before the tournament.
Let me know if anyone has any more questions or need directions. Thanks
Remember, Big Branch is played on a working cattle farm with a small creek. Please wear appropriate footwear, bring tick repellent and, as always, PACK YOUR LUNCH! Pass the word.

Ditto. I just hate seeing all the man-made garbage out there. Buildings, roads & asphalt, etc. I think golf should be a park-like experience where you don't have to look both ways before walking to the next tee.

Taking comments out of context, heh? My "garbage" comment was about the surroundings on the course, not the design.
The design is all about what Duvall had to work with, which was a very scenic university campus. Scenic university campus does not equal ideal golf course.
Please excuse the diversion. Now, back to Virginia Golf........

I been fortunate to enjoy a few victories in my Open career, and I am proud of that. That pales to the pride I feel from directing a PDGA tournament that produces a first time PDGA winner. A year ago Adam V got his first victory at the Timber Ridge Open. This year Erik Smith won the Walnut Creek Open, and Rusty Wilhelm also won first Open tournament at the Golden Hills Open.
Following in that tradition, congrats to Tommy Donnelson on his first Open victory! Tommy beat a stout field. I'm proud of you, buddy! Congrats!
The Blue Ridge Invitational field is set. Tommy joins Erik, Tony Ellis and Ryan Jones in Open. Mitch Hoeppner won Masters to join Rusty, Jim Conrad and Johnny Brown at the BRI. Mike Richards also garnered a Golden Ticket to accompany Frank Gonzalez, Greg Clemons, and David Stowell in the Advanced field. Char Jarret and Wendy Boetccher tied for first in the Open field--Char declined the money to retain her amateur status, but did win a Golden Ticket to compete with Laura Clark tomorrow.
Thanks to each and every person that came out to the Golden Ticket events. I appreciate it.
It's on! Tomorrow at 10:00.
Results to follow.

Looks nice, I did a little google work and came up with this:
Editorial Review for Bryan Park – by Doug Budryk
This 257-acre park showcases North Richmond. Featuring picnic shelters, tennis courts, soccer fields, wooded areas and plenty of open space, Bryan Park is a treat for those that like lots of physical activity. If standing around is more your speed, then bring your fishing rod and license and fish in the lake for largemouth bass, bluegill and catfish. Should you visit Bryan Park in the spring, bring your camera with loads of color film to capture the world-famous Azalea Gardens. Lush azalea bushes splash brilliant colors across a beautifully landscaped garden. Everyone will be impressed by this remarkable display. An entry fee may be required during spring.

Bryan Park opens new disk golf course
Richmond.com
Wednesday, July 18, 2007
Friends of Bryan Park, a non-profit group of city and county residents dedicated to the improvement and preservation of Joseph Bryan Park, recently announced the opening of a new disc golf course at the park on Tuesday.
Laid out in the east and north portions of Bryan Park, a 266-acre city park in Richmond's Northside, the new nine-hole disk golf course was a massively volunteer driven project. Volunteers raised funds, laid out the course and installed the disc golf "baskets," which were purchased by the City of Richmond's Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Department.
Disc Golf is like the game of golf, but flat discs, similar to Frisbees, are used. The game is also commonly called Frisbee golf or "frolf." The sport is growing in popularity and can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels.
Friends of Bryan Park works closely with the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities to fundraise, educate, improve and manage Bryan Park, which was given to the city in 1911 as a memorial gift in honor of Richmond leader and businessman Joseph Bryan.

Fun times were had by all today. The course was in top-notch shape but still showed it's teeth at time like only it can. Contrary to what some people might say, the Golden Hills course is a very great, very unique course that will test every part of your game, espically your patience. I encourage everyone in the region to play this place at least once.
Congrats to soon-to-be-father Whorley for making it 4 years in a row in the open (with cell phone in his pocket all day) and big props go to MODG for getting his first ADV win over baggers Clemens and Foster. Rrrruuuuffff!
Whorley and jim conrad both ace as well to split the pot. Not sure who won the 3 baskets in the CTP competition, as I split out early to listen to the end fo the race on the radio.
The Elk Creek Classic AM event in Appomattox, VA is less than 3 weeks away, hope to see everybody there. Info can be found at www.elkcreekdgc.info (http://www.elkcreekdgc.info)
Baskets go to James Conrad (son of ace pot winner Jim), Brian Sward, and Dan Lassiter. More to come.

Thanks, JP!
Don and Julie Wetzel announced they were going to step aside from running the BRO after ten years. They're handing the reigns over to Jim Conrad, who I'm sure will continue the fine tradition. Thanks for the memories, Don and Julie! Don't be strangers.
The course was in great condition! Thanks Mitch and company!
I had great groups all weekend and couldn't have scripted a better day. Hitting my first-ever PDGA ace on one of my favorite dg holes was certainly a cherry on top!

Hey JP. Anyone that says Golden Hills is anything other than a great, challenging course just doesn't get it. It is on my short list of favorite courses and if you make it to Ramcat you'll see little bits and pieces of it's influence there. BTW my local informants say Y'ville's King Matthew, errr, Matthew King was in that mix in Advanced tied for second. Y'all come on down to Yadkin County when you get a chance.

Thanks Don and Julie for a fun event. The course is different than any other I've played. I'd like to go back and try it again. Congrats to Vince on his Open win, the Hammer and I will hit you up next year. Way to go JC! Rruff!! Nice win brother. You earned it out there. Great Time, Great people. Advanced Masters was the coolest division again. Thanks for everything.
The results for the Blue Ridge Open have been posted. It looks like the second round for the Intermediates do not have ratings and I am not sure why. All players used the White tees the first round. Pro and advanced used the Blue tees for the second round and the intermediates used the white tees again.
The scores do not tell it all, of course. For example, Vince Whorley tied the tournament record that he set back in 2005. Mitch Hoeppner and Will Lewis tied for first in Pro Masters and had a play off starting on hole 18. Will won the flip and threw first. His shot hit a branch and fell to the ground leaving him a difficult shot with OB between him and the basket. Mitchs first shot looked almost the same; however, he got thru the tree and way up the fairway (not bad for someone who says he never gets a break). Wills second shot looked like it was going to make it over the OB; however, it was just inches short. Mitchs second shot ended up less than 25 feet from the basket so Will had to go for it from about 80 feet. It was a grand effort but was not to be. Mitch laid up for his drop in 4 and victory. His disc stood up and looked like it was going to roll away, but he got another break and it stayed by the basket. James Camden playing in the advanced division came from the second card to win. His second round Blue Tee score was 3 shots better than his competition. Steve Keightons advanced master score would have won the Pro Masters division. Steve said it was his best Blue Tee round ever. What a great time to have a hot round. Rusty Wilhelm was playing injured. He had to use a crutch for both rounds. If you are familiar with the Golden Hills course, you know how tough that had to be.
Thanks to everyone that came. A special thanks to Chris Hysell for providing the discs, to Mitch Hoeppner and Josh Taft (and many others) for all of the work on the course, to Innova for providing a good deal on the 3 baskets that were given away, and especially to my wonderful wife, Juli, for all of the help and support. It has been a great 10 years and Juli and I have many wonderful memories. Thanks to all of the people that made the Blue Ridge Open what it is and thanks to Jim Conrad for making sure it will go on.

A round requires 10 ( I think) players with ratings over something like 600ish for the round to be rated playing the same layout.
The first round with everyone playing the whites obviously has this.
The second round with jiust those few people playing the whites, does not.
Just thought I'd pass it along!

Thanks so much for running such a great tournament Don and Julie. I played last year's tournament and that is what really got me in to playing tournament golf. I had a great time.
By the way, I think Vince's ace was on hole number 3 from the blue tees. That hole is about a 160ish feet long with a 60 foot or so drop from tee to basket. Blue tee requires a bit of a turnover shot for righthand backhand throwers. It's a fun shot.

You need five players with established ratings over 799 to get unofficial ratings online. However, that round without ratings will be combined with the one with ratings so that both rounds should get official ratings.

My middle finger is a beautiful shade of purple/maroon. My right shoulder and arm are still numb from playing disc golf for two days last weekend. Will I quit? Eventually, but i'm trying every day to relearn this game and become a factor again.

Hey all you Virginia Am mullets. 2008 Am Worlds in Michigan - August 2008. Next year we need to get some Virginia representation!
2007 there were 5 Virginians, 3 of which ended up playing in the semifinals for their respective divisions. Let's get some more folks there next year! (California was definitely talking trash this year about how they were going to win all the divisions!)
For you Disc Golf Clubs - maybe we need to coordinate and consolidate some funds in order to sponsor some youg stud or studdette that can't afford to go.

I thought that disc golf was growing, but apparently thats not true in Virginia. Two of the nicest guys Ive ever met, ran the first ever Elk Creek Classic this weekendand they did it with money out of their own pocket!!! The course is SWEETbut its very tough and it will challenge you both mentally and physically. The sad part is that only TWO people (who drove over 3 hours each) showed up for this B Tier event!!! The latest word is 57 pre-reg'd players! As if you needed any more convincing, here's some items to look forward to:
--FREE chance to win a DisCatcher sport! During lunch you get 1 FREE throw for the CTP contest. If you're not close enough, you can buy your way closer after the second round
--Cheap and delicious lunch! Dr. Ho's Humble Pie is hooking us up. For just $5 (sign up in the morning), you get 3 slices of tasty pizza and a drink!
--You get to see a mix of what Walnut Creek has to offer. White tees play to both short and long positions first round, then pins will be moved for the second round.
--Don't forget the after party! Glow holes at my house, located .9 miles from the course! Camping available Friday and Saturday, call 434-978-1719

The Battle of the Blue Ridge Team Championship will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Timber Ridge DGC in Bedford, VA. Five person teams. There will be no restrictions other than that. Men will play blue tees, Ladies will play shorter tees. Just like last year everyone plays one round of stroke play in the morning. A team's best four scores count toward qualifying for the match-play round of playoffs.
Last year we had five teams--Home, Lynchburg, Charlottesville, NOVA and Roanoke. This year I'd like to see at least eight teams, hopefully more. Staunton? Christiansburg? Team GC? Team Nut? Amherst? Team Sherando? Team Spotsy? Team Richmond? Team NC?
Last year team NOVA won and nobody wants that to happen again.
I'll be in contact with prospective team captains soon. Contact me via e-mail if you have questions or want to be a team captain.

It's Jefferson Ave. at Newport News Park and it turns into Merrimac Trail once you get up closer to Williamsburg where New Quarter is. So give the Merrimac Trail location a try. In the alternative, anything close to Busch Gardens is going to be about 10 minutes from New Quarter and perhaps 15 minutes from NN Park.

I don't think the the world is ready for two MTL's. But you could double your chances of getting whacked with a disc.

Unfortunately I'm not playing HHO, but I probably would have played PRO.
Question: my player rating is 943 and I am a registered pdga am. I did accept $23 at the Jam. As long as my rating stays below a certain number 955(?), am I still able to play as an advanced player?
Secondly, how will the expert division affect this status next year?
Again, this is just for my education. I would have played open at HHO.

Since you accepted cash at a PDGA, you are now permanently considered a pro. You must register as a pro next year.
Yes,per the 2007 PDGA Competition Manual, in 2007 you may still play am for the rest of the year since your rating is below 955.
Rule 2.4 Pros Playing Am
(A) Pros rated less than 955 may now compete in Amateur divisions offered at PDGA A, B, C, and D Tier events, for which they qualify based on rating, age, and gender.
(1) Pro Men and Women
<955 can play Advanced (MA1), <915 can play Intermediate,....
Secondly, how will the expert division affect this status next year?
Good question, I don't know. That, I assume, will be explained in the updated Competition Manual if it exists yet.

The next question is what is the monetary difference in registering as a pro and am with the pdga? Have I just accepted cash that is less than the extra amount I will have to pay as a registered pro??
Do they really want no one in the pro division???

Sounds likes you already know the answer. I think it's $55 and $75.
Have I just accepted cash that is less than the extra amount I will have to pay as a registered pro??
$30-$23=$-7. So, the technical answer would be no. :Dj/k

also- we will be stuck with the cattle for the weekend- the creek in the other field where i usually lock them out of the course is completely dry. if this presents a problem for anyone i will be happy to refund your registration. the cattle are docile and generally will do their best to avoid the people/stay out of the way.
