I believe your Golden Ticket is all the entry fee that is required. Congrats, and good luck at the BRI!
You can put in 24522 as the zip for Appomattox and that will get you close. The change would be to turn left about two miles before you get into the town of Appo. on SR 613 (aka Police Tower Rd.). Look for the big red and white tower. The entrance to the park will be on your right. Head into the park until you see the first baseball field to your right and the course will be to the left of that.

Sherry, I just sent you an e-mail I hope. I can send you directions tonight if you need them. There is a twenty dollar entry fee for all divisions this year to spice up the prize pool a little. The prize pool includes a disccatcher sport basket for the ladies division and the am division. Everyone who attends will be paid out also. :)

Would to thank Vince and Rhonda for the hospitality from my normal weekend job (mowing fields in WV) . I really love playing both of their courses (Big Branch and Timber Ridge) they seem to fit my golf game. Enjoyed everyone I played with all weekend, James Conrad is a name everyone needs to look out for in the future! He was uncorking Avair and Buzz Drives that most people would be ecstatic to have with their drivers. Thanks again to my Sunday Caddie Pat, Sorry about the four extra rocks in bottom of the bag but you did deserve the 60 minutes.
Next weekend I will be in Paw Paw working on the courses again like the past 4 weekend prior. Spots still available for this yeer's West Virginia Open. http://www.westvirginiaopen.com/

Due to low numbers of registrants. I am now accepting RSVP's, without advance payment, for the Amateur Wind Up.
Anyone who contacts me in advance will not have to pay the $5 walk up registration fee.
Just let me know Name Division etc... and I will add you to the list.
At this point, a no show will be easier to deal with than a walk up.
Discs are on the way. I have decided NOT to order the shirts.
BTW. Many players have noted that the tick problem has subsided lately, Hopefully, the recent rain will not cause a relapse.

Alright...it's official. High Noon 4 will go on as planned - Saturday the 6th. I've been polling players for the last 3 days and it seems the majority want to go ahead and play through the storm! The daredevil in me loves it! The practical side of is a bit skeptical though. I just need for everyone who does venture out to the tournament to be alert - watch what's happening around you. If its just wind and rain, we'll be wet and watch our plastic do things its never done before. As for lightning, you all know the drill - mark your lie and bring it in when you hear the call. Of course, we are the dumbest sportsmen on the face of the planet for doing this, but how can we not? We're all insane for the chains! See you all tomorrow!

So to the lucky people who decided to get there pre reg in by the Big Branch Open, the basket that is going to be given away this year is a Discatcher Sport. That gives those lucky people a 1 in 14 chance for the basket.
But to those who are coming out to join us on 20th of September, 2 division winners are going to get a Discatcher Sport as well.
We are also again this year going to have ctp, distance & putting comps, these will all be for fun and prizes. These comps are going to be a little defferent than last years so make sure you come and check them out.

Last evening at Loriella league, I ran into one of the most appalling situations I have ever encountered in the sport. Walking up to #17, I noticed a player (who has been playing for quite a few years) in my group drop a butt to the ground. I figured it was an accident, so I asked him to pick it up. He intimated that he dropped it on purpose & refused. I insisted, explaining both the moral & rule-literal (801.01F) problems, only to be met with the reply, "I pay taxes, so I can do whatever I want in this park. Furthermore, you'll see flick another one to the ground when I smoke one after #1." Absolutely incensed, I picked up his butt myself, called a courtesy warning, & replied (numerous expletives deleted), "If I see it, you'll be eating it." I was so PO'ed, I very nearly choked that punk out and, once I simmered down a bit, very nearly walked off of the course in disgust.
Instead, I decided to finish the round (he VERY wisely didn't smoke any more cigs) & go through proper channels & I am sorry I did. I went to the TD after the round (with the third member of our card) & laid out the story, hoping he'd at least say something to the offender. (If I had been the TD, I would have DQ'ed his arse & told him never to return to league.) Instead, I got, "Well, if you call somebody out like that, what do you expect?" I told the TD I couldn't believe what I was hearing, that not only was a defiant, unrepentant litterbug being let slide, but that the person with the cojones to try to protect the park we play in was not being backed up AT ALL in any official way. He closed with, "Maybe you shouldn't try to act like everybody's dad; we are grownups out here after all." I was so exasperated I couldn't even find the zeal to lay into him (which he justly deserved) & just wandered off in a daze, feeling like I was in Bizarro World.
Needless to say, that is the LAST time I will ever attend Loriella league (or any other event "run" by the lily-livered TD) & the LAST time I will ever associate in any way with the offending individual (he doesn't even deserve at this point to be called a "player").
Per the request of the Spotsy Disc Golf Club, I want to add that the club members in general work their tails off to keep the course & park beautiful, and that this incident involving a reprehensible individual & spineless TD should in no way disparage or tarnish the efforts of the club as a whole, nor make any reader think that Loriella Park is not a great place to play.

Some people just don't get it!
Tell me about it. We had (and still have) a problem with butts on the ground at the new Sontag course. So, before permanent signage was ready for the course, I made a hand-written sign that I put on the corkboard under our kiosk asking that nobody leave trash and butts on the gound. Can you believe somebody actually wrote back, on the sign, "Well, maybe we wouldn't have to throw it on the ground if there was trash cans on every tee." Very dumbfounding to say the least.
Needless to say the permanent rules sign is under lock and key now.

This is a factor that is way too large in this sport that will keep us "held back" as they say.
The mind set of people who feel they have a right to throw trash on the ground is one likely to also be found in those who won't call rules violations. Sad thing is this person probably learned this from his parents (or lack of parenting) and will likely pass it on to his offspring (stupid people seem to breed more than smart people).
Sad that you had to experience that Ray. This is why I prefer private courses like The Grange where the owner/TD will give you a royal butt chewing for doing this.

HH stock ale (borderline barleywine) has been cellaring in Frenck oak for about 6 weeks; may be mature enough for competition, may not be. finished design work on the HH longs yesterday, come out next sunday for chance to play it in competition, par 102 for 27 holes, likely ssa 92-93. changes as follows:
1- likely no change
2- longer pin- becomes par 4 will have different tee as well
3- moved tee back and to the left will still mando
4- longer pin across creek- becomes par 4
5- longer pin at bottom of hill behind current pin, actually only 30 feet downhill but will eliminate putts for short upshots and green will be even faster
6- longer tee back and to the left
7- no change
8- no change
9- longer pin about 180 to right of usual pin, in usual hyzer lane of 3
A- no change
B- no change
C- island green
10- no change
11- no change
12- new pin down the hill to the right, no longer but upshot more constricted and the creek remains in play, also elevated basket on boulder
13- tee will move back
14- longer tee back and left- becomes par 4
D- longer tee at bottom of hill near 14's basket- maybe par 4 from there?
E- likely no change
F- no change
G- no change
H- no change
15- no change- why mess with perfection?
16- longer pin next to creek (8 feet from creek)
17- tee will go back about 100 feet- becomes par 5, drive is woodshed-ish
18- longer pin along fenceline all the way to swamp which also defines hole b likely par 5

Hello all,
Since the inception of the USDGC I have sponsored the Virginia flag to fly on a hole each year out of my own pocket. (Has varied from $200 to $250 each year) The Virginia flag is one of the few which have actually been there every year. This year my funds are tight due to a variety of circumstances so I'm asking for some help on it. Anyone wishing to donate any amount towards this sponsorship can do so via check (made out to john biscoe) sent to 8300 Lawyers Rd Spotsylvania, VA 22551 or paypal to

HH, I have to list my favorites based on the 27-hole layout, since several of my favorites are some of the letter holes.
I think 3, 15, F and G are the best holes on the course. Every one is high risk/reward and requires placement on multiple shots for a good score.

8 and 12, where even playing safe can be demanding. I've tried going out to the right on 8 and still kicked into the creek lol
My favorite area to be during a round is the 4 basket/5 and 7 teeing area. It's just a really beautiful spot on the course. Like it's own little world.

Hey Disc Golf Clubs of Virginia - isn't this something our clubs should be supporting!!!????
With the number of clubs we have, shouldn't $50 per club cover this fee?

John Biscoe is selling Hole Sponsorships and Full color discs and that money will go towards the Hawk Hollow Open. That sure is nice of him.
I wanted to raise money during the tournament for the Hawk Hollow Basket Fund, so I am offering a different kind of sponsorship opportunity. I am selling sponsorship opportunities for Out of Bounds, Barbed Wire, Trees, Bridges, or whatever else you would like to sponsor.
The Hawk Hollow Basket Fund was started by Andrew Rivers and myself. Hawk hollow like most of the top courses you have had the pleasure of playing is privately owned. Hawk Hollow has many baskets on loan and most of them are beat up. We felt that the responsibility to outfit the course with new baskets should rest on the shoulders of the people who have enjoyed this course for free. So far, with everyone's support, we have 3 baskets in the ground.
For $15 I will put an enlarged(max 8.5x11) laminated photo of your pretty face on whatever spot you choose. This is the perfect way top show your support for the course, even if you got shut out of the tournament.
I am getting final approval for Face Plants and will have a final list by next week.
Email me if you are interested.

Another great tourney in Appomattox this year. For anyone who hasn't been out, the course was magnificent, surpassed only by the perfect weather. Two rounds of great golf, and three really cool competitions. Some of the best players from VA and NC had tight competition in all the divisions, and in the distance, putting and CTP contests. I have not been to another tourney where you could win a basket or thrower Roc for a dollar. A very sincere thanks to all who traveled to the tournament, and especially to some repeat players. Daniel Eubank and Jason Hair are two of the best TD's you are likely to run across, and the lion's share of the credit for an awesome event goes to them. Thanks guys. KP

I don't know if anyone is heading out to the Shenandoah's this weekend for the Maurertown FLY, but wanted to give a reminder for the one-day tourney.
I wouldn't be mentioning it, except I was at a church retreat over the weekend that was near the course, so while I was out there, I dropped by to check it out, and it greatly exceeded my expectations for a 9-hole course. It's only about 90 miles from D.C., and its a beautiful drive out there.
My impressions: this is a gorgeous course. Easily one of the best 9-hole courses I have ever played. and unlike a lot of 9-hole courses, this one doesn't ever feel cramped. There is probably enough land to build a mediocre 18-hole course, but the designers instead decided to build a great 9-hole course. So there is never any overlap between holes or danger of getting hit from people playing other holes. So speed-of-play should be pretty good.
Holes range from about 300-450 feet, and teepads are clearly marked. I injured my throwing hand playing football the day before (jammed two fingers, one seriously), so I didn't really play the course, but walked it through with a couple of really flippy, low-power discs just for grins, since I could throw those with zero snap/power without hurting my fingers.
From the shorts, most holes are reasonably easy 3s, so a good player will take some 2s. From the longs, most holes become challenging 3s, many of which force a great risk-reward, where you can play placement golf for a good chance at a three, or run a full-power drive for a low-percentage deuce and an almost guaranteed 4 if you miss the lane or the landing area. Very well-designed course in this regard.
Holes are beautiful and there are lots of trees and elevation changes. Good mix of holes.
I think the best thing I can do to sum up the course is that it doesn't feel like a 9-hole course (which tend to be pretty mediocre), it feels like a great front half to an 18-hole course. Almost like 9-holes taken from Tyler State Park up in PA or from Loriella down in VA -- they are the most similar courses that I've played that I can think of quickly.
If my hand is better by the weekend, I will probably head out there. Hope to see a full field of other folks out there as well.

The course we played at Elk Creek was the white tees. Par from the white tees should be par 60 with holes 3,12,13,14,15, and 16 being par 4s. Even master biscoe would agree.

Since a 9 hole final does not meet the minimum 12 hole requirement for SSA calculations on the PDGA results pages,
no one has ever seen the actual statistics for the final 9 at Bluemont.
I plugged in the scores from the lead groups in the last 5 events (20 rounds with an average player rating of 984)
The following reflects the Adjusted Score Average per hole for a 1000 rated player
Hole #- Feet, Elevation =Effective length- SSA 1000 rated player
1- 539, +5 = 554- 4.22
2- 434, +46 = 572- 3.75
3- 274, -23 = 205- 2.66
4- 385, +4 = 397- 3.91
5- 413, +18 = 467- 3.86
6- 289, -26 = 211- 3.13
7- 366,-6 = 348- 3.28
8- 354, +2 = 360- 2.92
9- 373, +25 = 448- 3.23

The 3rd annual BATTLE OF THE BLUE RIDGE Team Championship will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at Timber Ridge DGC in Bedford, VA. Five person teams. Men will play yellow tees, Ladies will play shorter tees. Just like last year everyone plays one round of stroke play in the morning. A team's best four scores count toward their team-total. The four teams with the lowest team-totals qualify for the playoffs. The playoffs consist of match play format for thirteen holes. All five players on a team play in the playoffs. Playoff teams will be seeded according to their team total. Players will be seeded within their team according to their score with ties broken in accordance with the "Zadereky rule". In the semifinal playoffs, Team 1 will play Team 4, and Team 2 will play Team 3. The playoff teams that win 3 or more of their matches move on to the finals which, again, is a thirteen hole of match play format. Ties in matches after thirteen will continue in a sudden-death playoff.
You can have more than five players, but only the best five scores from your team make the playoffs. It's also possible to only have four players on your team, however, if that team makes the playoffs they will automatically lose one match. Team NOVA overcame being shorthanded last year and won for the second year in a row. Players on teams that don't make the playoffs may play in the "Tournament of Remorse" eighteen hole stroke play tournament.
$30 a person. Teams must check in with full entry fees by 9:30 sharp. Tee time 10:00 sharp. Players must pack their lunch, because we will take a very short lunch to pull this off before dark. I will look into discounted BoBR, custom embroidered team t-shirts/collared/sweatshirts if teams are interested.
This tournament is always very fun. Team golf is a great experience. We have had at least five teams each year including teams from NOVA, Charlottesville, Roanoke, Christiansburg, and Lynchburg. I'd like to see teams from places like Richmond, Spotsy, BRDGC, Elk Creek, TN, NC, and the beach. Come on down the farm boys!

I know its early but mark it on your calendar!!!
Saturday, December 13. Spotsy Disc Golf Club presents its annual charity tournament and second annual chili cook off. Last year this tournament raised over $500 and 100 or so cans of food for the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank.
This year our charity will be once again the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. Look for details concerning cost etc. More than likely it will be similar to last year where a portion of your entrance fee will go to the Food Bank and we will collect cans of food as part of the entrance fee. You can also expect those infamous mulligans and anti-mulligans to be purchased for a small fee (all mulligan fees go to the Food Bank). Additionally, back by popular demand will be the chili cook off where you will get to taste the chili wares of your fellow disc golfers and get to vote for your favorite. As always, CTPs, and great plastic payout for the ams (cash payout for the pros).
P.S. - I will also be accepting any and all plastic, prize, and or cash donations to help this tournament and the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank. Stay tuned for more details.

Now that the board is hopefully up for a while, Let's have some talk about THE EVENT in less than 7 days at one of the best courses in the COUNTRY!
I'm looking forward to returning to my 3rd home state (behind GA and Nevada)to play the Hollow and have some of the Biscoe's famous dinner!
Keith
I guess I'm the only one who cares about playing there anymore, :( even John hasn't posted anything like remember to bring backups of your flippy plastic. :D
Well I'll be there in my new Keith Johnson disc golf mode with no Pepsi, not getting emotional, and I'll have a good time either way.

John posted before that we would be playing the original 18 for Saturday and maybe 18 or 27 for Sunday, but that was like 6 months ago when people actually still cared.
It may be different now that it's 4 days away.

So far only 1 ace in the 3 rounds I've been Pepsi less, but I'm hoping for more in the next 3 weekends at the Hollow, the CRUCIBLE, and in Vegas!
I do need to find a sugar substitute though as I've had to step up from putters to midrange, and midrange to drivers on some holes near the end of the rounds. I'm working on a chocolate IV that can attach to my new Innova DiscCarrier bag, since there is room for it.
Had to make the change to be able to want to continue playing disc golf, as I've had too many high and lows during rounds, and the lows always outweighed the highs even when I threw great rounds. Now if the shot is bad or an ace, no one around me knows the difference, because I just walk up and make the next shot,(or take the disc out of the basket) without saying anything.
Funny story with the ace is that they were already gathering up all the players to have a throw-off while I was helping with the scorecards, because no one heard anyone screaming or anything. :D
I then calmly informed the TD that I would appreciate him not giving away my 260 dollars.
"Calm Keith" - coming to a course near you soon. :D

gang4010

Course par is probably around 60-62 for 18 holes (just a guess)
Par 4's might include 3, 10, 12, 15, 16, & 18
Hole 7 might be a par 5 at ~900'

Has 14 been shortened? If not, I would argue that it is a par 4 as well.
As for the added holes, is this correct?
You play 1 - 9, then...
A (between the trees across the valley into the cedars - par 4)
B (Downhill open beside the fence - par 3)
C (Uphill and open - par 3)
And then 10 - 14
D (by the corale, blind shot over the hill - par 3)
E (between the cedars over the valley, basket on the left behind the cedars - par 3)
F (OB Fence Right, woods left - OB long - par 4)
G (out the gap OB fence Right, into the field - basket up the gap between the cedars - par 4)
H (across the field, OB left, into the corale - par 4)
15, 16
I - Uphill and wooded - par 3)
17, 18

Wow! What a great time at the Hawk Hollow Open this weekend! The course was everything I've heard about (and then some), the competition was great and the fun/hospitality was top-notch! Besides Biscoe's mashed-potatoes, the next best thing on Saturday night was the hot pepper eating contest......I sure hope John posts some pictures of that event! It was also enjoyable to meet some DISCussionists in person.....Vegan Ray, MTL and Keith Johnson....it's always nice to put a face to a name! I sure had a great time and I hope to bring some more 'burghers with me next year! :)
Lastly, if someone asked me to give a review of the Hawk Hollow course, I could easily sum it up with "If one was to think about disc golf on his/her death bed, it would not be a surprise to dream about this course."
