We've got preregistrations from NJ, MD, CO and VA, but none from NC. C'mon you gods of disc golf. Come up here for some easy pickins'. You know how bad VA golfers suck. We're practically giving money away up here.

Most of them will be going to the NT that weekend

I'm thinking about coming.

I'll be near Winston Salem that Saturday and Mapquest says its only 2 1/2 hours from there to Bedford and only 3 hours from Bedford back to Raleigh.

And from what I've heard about the course, it's worth the trip.

If it were a 2 day event, I would def. be there. However, 1 day events make me less likely to travel.

i know... and most people would agree with you i'm sure- i get to play about 5 rounds a month though and still have some lingering back issues so even 2 rounds puts a hurtin' on me. plus i have so much going on at work, at home, in the garden, keeping up hawk hollow, dealing with state coordinator crap (who wants the job in 2008?), and checking message boards that it makes leaving for 2 days difficult.

VR likey the one-day, too. Takes me almost a week to physically recover from a 4-round event (and ancillary events). VA States this weekend, though only two rounds, but plus DDC plus MTA plus Distance plus Accuracy plus Freestyle plus all the partying, might just be the end of me.

That Nor'easter is going to hit Sunday with a vengence. I will probably not be out there checking scores if the rain is sideways.

Allow me to reply to myself.
Saturday looks good at Bayville. Worst of the weather will be midnight Sunday with rain starting. Calling for 1-3 inches by Sunday night. Winds at NN @ 20-30 and rain (Steady?) during the day. No thunder/Lightning/ Hail ....yet. Possibility of sideways rain..maybe. Can't be worse than championship round at the NN last Fall. Courtesty umbrellas to the first 2 players.
Beat the rush!!!
If noone shows up, I may win my first tourney ever!!!!!!

More to follow.
See you at Bayville in the AM!

I want to thank all 51 players who came out today, in the rain and the wind, to support the 10th Newport News Spring Pro/Am. :cool:Special thanks to Jay Lockamy, Otis Mills and Jeff Keirn for helping pull it off. :) These players took to the field early, with a steady rain and breeze and played through the worst of it until the weather broke. Water was flowing fast and pools everywhere. About 5 holes into the afternoon, you could barely see the baskets 250 away for the rain. Golfers with no suits, umbrellas, or hats, throwing plastic in rain. Amazing.. and they played on until another break. During awards there were smiles everywhere. These guys had made it through a monsoon together. Wow!
Disc Golfers never fail to surprise me. :DIt was my honor to play with them today. Thanks again for the support!

Little skinny ole gimp broken hand whorley calling people out. C'mon you NC gods. All you have to do is have a valid NC driver's license and you know you're good. It's a gauranteed victory. I'm talking to all the NC pros who have never tasted victory in the Open division. I'm looking at you, I'm talking to you. C'mon. Anyone. Please grace us with your presence. No one in the history of VA has ever beaten anyone from NC. Everyone knows that. Don't make me name names. Those who are feeling their shirt collar get a little tight know who I'm talking to.

I'm making light of a bad situation...sorry. I'm drawing from my past bad behavior at a WVO over 12 years ago (I've been sober for 12 years)

the instance was in one of my WVO binges...It was about 2 or 3 in the morning and I was walking by Ted Z's camp and their cooler was just sitting there, so I went to see what libation Ted had left for me...thankfully it had 2 or 3 beers still in it...I finshed those off and stumbled to bed.
The next morning Ted was having a fit about where his beers had gone...I told him I drank them...he asked why? I said "no one was there to tell me not to".

granted this was bad behavior and I'm not proud of it now...but it is something I take ownership of and is a running joke within the WVO arena.

Hence the "Paw-Paw survival guide's" rule number 1...which states: "You did not bring enough beer."

Thanks to Vince for hosting the second PDGA tournament at this great course. The course absolutely needed to have another opportunity to bring the rest of VA to CVILLE.

Please do not confuse this tourny for Mountain Jam VI at Walnut Creek October 6 which is part of the ODDS. Preperation has already started on this event which is expected to fill. Look for upcoming posts about PreReg.

Virginia bretheren, Consider yourself invited to the Lakefront Open may 19 and 20. Kingsport is not that far of a drive and the camping at Warriors is first class. The course has been re-designed since last year with the elimination of holes 1,4,5 and 6 due to the construction of a new handicap access playground. The 4 new holes are very fun and challenging and add 3-5 strokes to your score. The flyer is on our website www.lakefrontdiscgolf.com (http://www.lakefrontdiscgolf.com) . Come on neighbors, send some love down Tennessee way!

Fellow Virginians and the rest of the disc golf world, work has officially begun and the installation of another high-quality disc golf course here in the Commonwealth. Rocky Mount is located 25 miles south of Roanoke, VA and roughly 80 miles north of Greensboro, NC on US 220. The local parks and rec dept here has given the green light and a group of 8 of us led by course designer Mitch Hoeppner had a great day rough-cutting out the front nine, including 3 true two-shot par 4's and 1 2&1/2 shot par4/par5. The course will be similar to Elk Creek DGC in Appomattox, VA, except maybe not quite as tightly wooded, but that all still remains to be seen (this is Virginia). Cant' wait to see you all down here in Rocky Mount.

This will be my first VA Open. As such, I've got a couple of questions.

What is camping like? I've got a friend to stay with in Crozet, but if that is a prohibitave drive, then I'd like to camp if there is onsite camping.

What do I need to bring? Food, beer?

Is there a players party on Saturday night? Friday doubles? Anything I should know about?

I'll be coming down from Cincinnati on Thursday 24th. Don't have to be back until the 30th.

Can't wait to see some VA disc golf!

Jim Conrad playing some dominating golf.

johnbiscoe
May 21 2007, 12:51 PM
event was moved due to A-tier at brandywine the following weekend.

it is not my preference to conflict with greenville. i can tell without even going there that they are running top notch, player friendly events, but options are severely limited.

schedule is full earlier and i can't go later than the end of october due to livestock issues. last year there were 9 players who played both events- regrettably they will have to choose. i'm certain most of the carolina folks will choose g-ville, you will be missed but i'm certain both events will fill either way and players at both events will be well-treated and leave happy for the most part.

It is a pity that 2 well run events with TDs who are so nice ( I am biased some) have to conflict, but that just happens. I hope that the HHO goes well. I was hoping to play this year since I have relatives right down the road. This will be the 3rd year that DEPC will be on that weekend and hopefully we will have many more years of our event. If HHO fills this weekend, just send the others south and tell them they can play in our event. Good luck all at the Virginia Open this weekend.

Biscoe, contact me if you want to see if Chelsea Joe's can do anything for you at HHO.

tiki was still going on when i left.

it was skinner's first a tier win. kelly washburn ran away with masters and qualified for both usdgc and msdgc. kristen weidle ran away with fpo. ed foster won advanced, landon furlong grandmasters for a strong showing from sherando. not sure about other am divisions.

usdgc qualifiers were skinner, washburn, jernigan, moser, and hofmann with a big deuce on hole 10 in a playoff for the spot. msdgc qualifiers were skinner, washburn, schneider.

chris roberts dog bear is amazing- pulling discs out of water with no visibility by finding them with his feet and ducking under to get them.

thanks bryan law and trapasso!!!

This was such an awesome event! I'm really bummed that I couldn't finish the rounds on Sunday, but I had a great time while at the Grange. What a sweet setup - with the food, partying, facilities, and 3 great courses, there's no need to ever leave the Grange (if you brought enough beer!).

Tiki was great (2 aces on the first time I ever played it. 3 & 9), the poker was great (even though I was second out - who would have thought 3 Kings is a loser hand - it is when the other guy flops a Royal FLUSH!!!!!!). The volunteers were awesome, the food tasty, and the competitors friendly. I'll definitely be coming back again next year, and I'll likely be bringing some more Cincy/KY boys with me.

Here's a question - I lost a blue wizard in the pond on Sunny 16 with Bear and Chris on Sunday morning. I had to leave before they could find it - is there anyone I can email or ask to see if they found it? It doesn't have my name on it, but it does have a couple of others - it's been passed around quite a bit. I also lost a white wizard on Dark 12 on Thursday, or somewhere before Friday morning. It does have my name on it, and my cell number.

Thanks again to all the volunteers who put on this great event. And a big special thanks to Mike Trapasso for opening up his beautiful property to us for a very memorable weekend of disc golf.

It was fun to watch Trapasso on fire in the first round. Congrats to "Principal" Skinner who made us all look like little kids this weekend.

Congrats (almost) to Gonzalez for almost winning Tiki. Word on the street is that Skinner was down a stoke after 16 and aced 17 and 18 to win it. What a weekend for him--insane!

I had some great groups this weekend--as usual. Congrats to me for beating Larry Leonard for the first time ever (I think).

A sincere thanks to all who helped me out during the weekend. The Trapasso family for coming to get me and my stuff after the accident, Mike Mathews and his clan for breakfast, etc., Steve Badger for his EMT expertise and prudent advice, Kelly Boyce for picking up some crutches for me, Mike Bonday for taking me back home after it all, and all the many many friends who make up my disc golf family who helped me along. Mike is the best host in disc golf, Ben had the courses looking the best that they have ever looked (Tiki included), and Bryan did one heck of a job running the event. Something must have been up with the MA1 backmarkers and missing the final round, I seemed to have been caught up in that epidemic. :oThis one is a can't miss for me. This year's ODDS events:
Loriella Challenge AM - 3/3, PRO 3/4
Sherando Spring Breakout 3/24
Timber Ridge Open 4/22
Battlefield Open 6/9&10
Duck Golf 7/7&8

High Noon at Indiantown 9/8
Mountain Jam 10/6
Newport News Fall Colors AM 11/3&4 PRO 11/10&11

Wow, the VAO was not part of the ODDS Series??

I agree with "wow".

I brought this up earlier in the year and I was told the large field size and number of non-regional players skews the results. I do not agree with that because there was a large number of "ODDS players" at the VAO. Furthermore, the only difference between VAO and the Loriella challenge was fivesomes at the VAO.

I think it skews the results omitting the VAO (as well as, the HHO). A large percentage of "ODDS player" participate in those tournaments. Therfore, the scores reflect head to head competition. The majority of the other events are one day events spread out across the state that generally involve somewhat local players and Hysell.

If the major Virginia events are included, then the series is more competitive because more players will be able to play more events that count towards their points total - against other "ODDS players". Personally, I cannot travel across the state for a one day tournament, and so I will likely only have a minimum number of events that count(just an example - not suggesting the series should be based on my circumstance)

We need an ODDS website or MYSPACE!

rottown
Jun 12 2007, 11:28 AM
Well put Mike. I agree with you on several points. I've spoken with several players who plan their season around the ODDS series (including myself). A central known site would help increase attendance for most ODDS events if only the info is more accessible. That would benefit the local clubs and ODDS in general. I'd be willing to help anyone that can put this together.
Or .. we could just put a Lo-Jack on Chris.

Wow, the VAO was not part of the ODDS Series??

dont quote me, but im pretty sure the idea was to increase turnout at local events. va open didnt need the odds event to attract players, it would fill regardless. you could actually skip a couple odds events if you placed well at the open or paw paw.....the amount of points you get at either could easily double points received for even a first place win at a local c tier. the events didnt need the hype and it also encourages good players to make it out to more local events to try to win it as opposed to playing well at a few to get just enough points. again, im just pretty sure.

I am pretty sure that is right and that works to some extent - if you main goal is to attract players to smaller events. I thought the idea of the ODDS series was about competition. The "bigger" events attract the best players and more of them. If the ODDS is about competition, then it makes sense that it should include a series of the biggest tournaments at the most challenging courses. The current tournaments are fantastic, but VAO and HHO's courses and number of participants makes them among the most competitive tournaments in VA each year.

I like the new format due to the reasons that Erik stated. I'm glad that WVO isn't a part of it anymore (no offense toni) for reasons that Hysell bellyached about for years. I also agree with bonday, in theory, and wouldn't be upset if the VAO and HHO came back on the schedule--It would make the ODDS have more of a championship meaning, instead of a grassroots series.

Consider this... maybe the VAO, WVO, and HHO didn't want to be a part of the ODDS this year. They don't need the ODDS--they'll fill anyway. It takes money from their fund. Last year ODDS tournaemnts were $2 a person (I think). That's obviously a big chunk of money.

One thing's for sure. Biscoe's open-minded and listens to everybody. Then he's gonna do what he think's best...and 99% of the time he's right.

Lastly. Don Wetzel (ODDS guru) e-mailed me last night and will give me the ODDS standings promptly. I'll post them on the PDGC website on a special page.

This is because the TD does not bother to advertise for the tourney, no flyers, no posts here, nothing. I would just show up the morning of and register if you want to play, there is no way it will fill. I believe they add about 6 extra holes in the fields and play both sets of tees with a final.

FYI Jeffrey. This event has been around a long time. But, every year it's the same at Duck Golf. Sanctioning at the last minute, little or no player package, a TWO day "C" Tier and then the final results are slow. ODDS is the only thing saving the Duck. Other than that...It's OK.

I didn't see it on the ODDs Schedule at spotsydiscgolf.com

johnbiscoe
Jun 14 2007, 05:42 PM
there is no odds schedule at spotsydiscgolf.com- that is merely the spotsy schedule. ODDS schedule is available at http://www.esdgc.com/ODDS (thanks shane)

anyone wishing to serve on the ODDS board next year please contact me- once upon a time the board made ODDS decisions with my input, that fell by the wayside due to several reasons i won't elaborate upon here. the time is right for the ODDS board to be re-established. imo vince, bonday, john roy, and shane would all make excellent boardmembers, although that may be one too many from tidewater.

to address one point: the ODDS is not strictly about competition- it is also about promoting virginia disc golf and about there being a mutually beneficial relationship between events and the series.

when i started the ODDS there were only a handful of PDGA events in the state- the growth has been phenomenal. the big events have reached a point where there is not really much benefit to them coming from the series. none of the events pulled out- i suggested to tony and bryan that they had in effect outgrown the odds.

my own event (HHO) was removed because i wanted to get back to 10 events and it was my feeling that we had more than 10 deserving events. i also considered splitting into an A and B series with different requirements for each but have not been impressed with the results of doing that from our neighbors to the north.

also- ODDS has never taken $2 per player from an event- it had always been $1 per until this year when i reduced it to $50 per event to simplify the process for myself and the td's.

regarding duck and the lack of info available i can merely say that i have taken what steps i can to improve the situation without results as of yet.

since i'm going to attempt to play the shag this weekend i am off to play my one practice round since the virginia open.

Besides, I am not really Tidewater, I live 2-1/2 hours away from Shane.

I understand it is not totally about competition and I know some tournaments may not gain anything from being ODDS events, but the ODDS series itself surely benefits from certain tournaments (VAO,HHO). In my opinion, there is no better way of promoting disc golf than to have a series that demonsrates the highest level of competition competition.

With all its problems, Duck Golf is still a good time. I will miss it this year as I will be moving that weekend.

Looks nice, I did a little google work and came up with this:

Editorial Review for Bryan Park by Doug Budryk
This 257-acre park showcases North Richmond. Featuring picnic shelters, tennis courts, soccer fields, wooded areas and plenty of open space, Bryan Park is a treat for those that like lots of physical activity. If standing around is more your speed, then bring your fishing rod and license and fish in the lake for largemouth bass, bluegill and catfish. Should you visit Bryan Park in the spring, bring your camera with loads of color film to capture the world-famous Azalea Gardens. Lush azalea bushes splash brilliant colors across a beautifully landscaped garden. Everyone will be impressed by this remarkable display. An entry fee may be required during spring.

when you are leaving richmond on 95 north just north of the interchange with 64 westbound there is a large area on your left fenced off with grass/ponds/large trees- that is bryan park. sort of like newport news in that it has large trees and open space but with hills/water potential as well.

they are likely putting in a course to help curb undesirable activity.

didn't realize the azaleas were "world famous" but they are really nice. also have never seen an entry fee charged.

Hopefully it's in a better neighbourhood than Gillies.

I'm still hobbling with crutches, but I'll get up there and check it out soon. With the all azaleas, it sounds like Augusta National!

Nothing wrong with that `hood. I grew up in worse. They don't bother us. The people playing disc golf at Gillies are worse with their drugs and alcohol.

so...who designed bryan park? hopefully you did but i'm guessing not.

also, i agree that the hood at gillies barely qualifies as hood. there is some serious hood not too far away though.

I had no parts in it. It was done by one of the old timer object golfers here in town. I've not seen it yet but I heard there may be trees protecting baskets or defining them. I'll make no opinions or criticisms until I see it myself. I think it will be a nice course no matter how it turns out. Bryan Park has some rolling hills and elevation changes. Plus it's about 3 or 4 miles from my new house.

Rumour is that at the Grange Monthly on June 30, you will get to hear the band you didn't get to hear at the Va. Open because some idiot ran into me.

My foot is better, I'm able to walk without crutches, and I'm ready to play some drums.

Rock On!

If Rick Allen can do it with one arm, doing it with a banged-up foot should be a breeze. :)
