hole 1 is 400 feet off a drop off with a creek behind it.

I was playing the VTI, a match play event, and I threw my drive OB in this creek.

The guy I was playing parks it so he said hey I'll just tap this in and you don't even have to putt, which made sense to me.

Well, I was having trouble getting my disc from the creek and the rest of my group was done playing the hole and started walking to hole 2.

The group on the tee saw my group walking to the next hole, assumed we were done and threw.

The guy threw a pro beast (the older ones that were in champion plastic) as a spike hyzer and it nailed me in the back of my head.

The Piedmont Disc Golf Club is proud to announce BRAWL IV! The league will consist of eight one-day tournaments that run on Saturdays from December 8, 2007 through February 16, 2008. BRAWL IV will showcase the courses of western Virginia including Greene County Park in Stanardsville, Walnut Creek Park in Charlottesville, Elk Creek DGC in Appomattox, Peaks View Park in Lynchburg, Fishburn Park in Roanoke, Golden Hills in Christiansburg and Timber Ridge in Bedford and Franklin County Park in Rocky Mount. The awards ceremony will be held after completion of the final tournament at Timber Ridge.

Each tournament is two rounds. Registration ends at 9:30, followed by a brief players' meeting, and tee off at 10:00 sharp. Open $20, Am/Ladies/Junior $10.

BRAWL IV is a points series with a simple format. Four divisions will be offered (Open, Ladies, Amateur and Junior <14). A player receives one point for entering, one point for each person beaten within your division and bonus points for the top 5 finishers (7-1st, 4-2nd, 3-3rd-2-4th,1-5th.) Only a player's best six finishes may be used in the final results.
A portion of the entry fee at each one-day tournament will be withheld from the Open and Am divisions. This money goes toward a trophy for the Open, Junior, Ladies and Am division winners, free membership (or renewal) into the club of their choice (PDGC or BRDGC) for the top four Ams and a Skins Match for the top four Open point leaders to be held at the awards ceremony. A $1 Ace Pool will be included with every unclaimed prized going towards final payout.

reallybadputter
Oct 22 2007, 08:30 PM
For the Mountain Jam you were too slow in looking for the preliminary rankings. You're SOL now...

David Vance had the scores in by mid-morning the day after. He sent in the score sheet before the end of the week and by early last week the scores were official, so the preliminary ratings are gone. To see your rating now, you'll have to wait for the update in early November...

So if I understand - shortly after a tournament there are preliminary round ratings. Once the info is sent to the PDGA the preliminary rating disappears until the next update to everyone's rating occurs. (sounds like a governmental conspiracy to me...not that I would know anything about those)

The Battle of the Blue Ridge Team Championship will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Timber Ridge DGC in Bedford, VA. Five person teams. There will be no restrictions other than that. Men will play blue tees, Ladies will play shorter tees. Just like last year everyone plays one round of stroke play in the morning. A team's best four scores count toward qualifying for the match-play round of playoffs.

Last year we had five teams--Home, Lynchburg, Charlottesville, NOVA and Roanoke. This year I'd like to see at least eight teams, hopefully more. Staunton? Christiansburg? Team GC? Team Nut? Amherst? Team Sherando? Team Spotsy? Team Richmond?

Last year team NOVA won and nobody wants that to happen again.

To all the Marines out there Happy 232nd Birthday! Below is the Commandant's Birthday Message:

1. SINCE THE BIRTH OF OUR NATION, OUR LIBERTY HAS BEEN PURCHASED BY VALIANT MEN AND WOMEN OF DEEP CONVICTION, GREAT COURAGE, AND BOLD ACTION; THE COST HAS OFTEN BEEN IN BLOOD AND TREMENDOUS SACRIFICE. AS AMERICAS SENTINELS OF FREEDOM, UNITED STATES MARINES ARE COUNTED AMONG THE FINEST LEGIONS IN THE CHRONICLES OF WAR. SINCE 1775, MARINES HAVE MARCHED BOLDLY TO THE SOUNDS OF THE GUNS AND HAVE FOUGHT FIERCELY AND HONORABLY TO DEFEAT THE SCOURGE OF TYRANNY AND TERROR. WE ARE MARINES - THAT IS WHAT WE DO.

2. IN THE WORDS OF PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY: "IN THE LONG HISTORY OF THE WORLD, ONLY A FEW GENERATIONS HAVE BEEN GRANTED THE ROLE OF DEFENDING FREEDOM IN ITS HOUR OF MAXIMUM DANGER." MAGNIFICENT HEROES FOUGHT IN THE WHEAT FIELDS OF BELLEAU WOOD, IN THE SNOWS OF THE CHOSIN, AND ON THE STREETS OF HUE CITY. YOUR GENERATION BEARS THIS OBLIGATION NOW, AND IT IS BORNE ON MIGHTY AND CAPABLE SHOULDERS. JUST LIKE THE MARINES AT BELLEAU WOOD WE ARE ONCE AGAIN ENGAGED IN SUSTAINED OPERATIONS ASHORE. JUST LIKE AT BELLEAU WOOD - THE MARINES HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE TOUGHEST SECTOR AND HAVE PREVAILED OVER A RESILIENT AND DETERMINED ENEMY - WHO HAS MADE US PAY FOR OUR GAINS. ONCE AGAIN, AS IN ANY STRUGGLE, THE ROAD AHEAD IS FAR FROM CERTAIN, BUT AS MARINES, WE ARE NOT DISSUADED BY THE CHALLENGES OF WAR OR THE TOUGH CONDITIONS OF A WARRIOR'S LIFE. INDEED, WE DON'T JUST ACCEPT OUR DESTINY - WE SHAPE IT.

3. ON OUR 232ND BIRTHDAY, TO EVERY MARINE - THOSE STILL IN UNIFORM AND THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED HONORABLY IN THE PAST - BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU DO. KNOW THAT YOUR CITIZENSHIP DUES HAVE BEEN PAID IN FULL; YOU ARE PART OF THIS NATION'S ELITE WARRIOR CLASS. CHERISH OUR FAMILIES WHO OFFER MARVELOUS SUPPORT, ABIDING RESOLVE, AND STEADFAST PATIENCE. REMEMBER THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED AND THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN - THEIR NAMES ARE CHISELED ON THE ROLL CALL OF AMERICA'S HEROES. THOSE WHO HAVE CARRIED THE BATTLE COLORS OF OUR CORPS HAVE FORGED OUR HERITAGE, AND TODAY'S GENERATION OF LEATHERNECKS CHART OUR FUTURE. CARRY THE COLORS WITH PRIDE; CARRY THEM WITH HONOR.

4. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARINES! SEMPER FIDELIS, JAMES T. CONWAY, GENERAL, U.S. MARINE CORPS, COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS

Battle of the Blue Ridge team championship

Where: Timber Ridge Disc Golf Course private course near Bedford

When: Saturday, November 24, 2007 10:00 am

Skinny: Teams of five players or more will compete against each other. $20 per person. Top four teams make the afternoon semifinal playoff. Only a teams top five players will compete in the playoffs. Co-ed optional, but women are encouraged to play.

Details: Teams may consist of five of more players. A team captain must be chosen to name the team and sign in. All players must sign in and declare a team. If you dont have a team, just show up and you will be put on a team!

Ladies will play from the red tees. Men will play from the blue tees. All players will play one 18 hole, stroke-play (regular scoring) in the morning. A teams top four scores will make their total score.

The four teams with the lowest total score will make the afternoon semifinals. Again, only the top five players from each team , according to score will compete in the playoffs. Teams will be seeded by total score, with lowest total score getting the best team seed. Ties for team seeding will be broken by lowest individual score. Each playoff team will be seeded by the individual morning scores of the the five players. Ties for individual seeding will be broken by the Zadereky Rule (reverse alphabetical order).

The playoffs will be twelve holes of singles play between teams. Team seeded 1 will play Team 4. Team 2 will play Team 3. Like individuals seeds will play against each other in match-play format (hole-by-hole scoring). For example, Team 1s seed 1 will play Team 4s seed 1. Starting holes will be randomly drawn. Their will be no ties: if competitors are tied after twelve holes then they will have a sudden-death playoff.

Semifinal teams winning three or more of their matches will play against each other in the finals. It will be twelve holes of match-play again, with ties after twelve holes being broken by sudden-death playoff.

Does that mean you are going to make it out this year Chris?

No, it really means that I was going to ride out to Appomatox next Saturday to look at a GTO and thought I would play Elk Creek if nothing was going on there.

Thankfully, the BRAWL series has grown into it's own and we no longer have to rely on Mr. Hysell's celebrity appearances to bolster attendance. I do, though, miss seeing first hand those 250' side arm approaches into an iced over green that skip once then stop completely on the ice pack.

Well said, buddy.

Hysell had his first lifetime spelling error. I can't believe that tEAM tRIM didn't pick up on that.

I miss Chris.

Just like Glenry is to JG, and Mitch Hoeppner is to Dwight Woods. I wish Chris was my "disc golf dad."

Wanna come throw some disc...(sniffle)... dad?

did i read the qualifying list correctly from usdgc.com?

va open is not a qualifier next year, neither is west va open?

wow..what happened?

no qualifiers in MD, VA, WV...

there is one in NC, but that is in Charlotte...quite a drive.

i guess it will make those state qualifiers even more competitive, but i bet a lot of talented golfers from these states will be left out of the 2008 tournament.

anyone know why the tournaments were dropped or why nothing was added in the area as it's been since the qualifying began?

johnbiscoe
Nov 29 2007, 03:09 PM
i thought there was to be some switching back and forth between the v.o. and the dogwood- evidently i was incorrect, not surprising however that charlotte can create a new event and grab the spot- maybe they'll hold monday qualifying at the grange.

don't know a thing about the wvo being out for this year however.

johnbiscoe
Nov 29 2007, 03:12 PM
...after all, charlotte and atlanta are at least 3 hours apart.

Nov 29 2007, 03:52 PM
I am not sure I completely understand the selection process for Qualifiers.

In the case of Charlotte, they have been begging for a Q for years.

As for the Q in this region I have been told that it was always intended for it to move from year to year. We just got spoiled by having it at the Crosstown for the first 8 years.

Nov 29 2007, 03:53 PM
Ronnie mark your calendar- VA USDGC qualifiers will again be the Golden Horseshoe Open and the Spotsy Summer Open July 12 and 13.

charlotte already has one the monday before usdgc. 5 spots available just like all the rest.

Nov 29 2007, 03:58 PM
To be brutally honest I would say that the Qualifiers should be regionally balanced.

By that I meant there should be some kind of parameters that balance how close together or far apart they should be.

A good example this year was the VA Open and the WV Open. The driving distance between them were the closest 2 Qualifiers in the U.S.

In that same vein I don't think there should be 2 Qualifiers in the same weekend (WVO and SN).

I have my fire proof suit on so please flame away.

John,

The Monday Qualifier gains nothing for the CLT club. They are hoping the Qualifier (as I always have in Raleigh) would entice additional players to come to their event.

Kirk

johnbiscoe
Nov 29 2007, 04:15 PM
i agree 100% that the vo and wvo were too close together and should not have both been included in the same year- similar to charlotte and atlanta for 2008.

as far as the qualifier status attracting players to the events i would say that the qualifier status should be reserved for events that can draw players on their own which the dogwood historically has with the exception of a glitch or two.

the monday qualifier gains the charlotte players/club MORE than having a qualifier gains other places- they can attempt to qualify multiple times on the SAME DAY without having to spend time/$ on travel, etc- just pay another entry fee and take another shot.

Are you ready to BRAWL??? The BRAWL will be bigger and better this year with sweet plastic from Innova for ams this year. The am champion will also win a discatcher sport this year again. Top four ams get membership into the BRDGC. Top four pros play in the lucrative final skins match.

It kicks off Saturday at venerable Fishburn Park in Roanoke. Greg Clemons is the TD. Come out and play the oldest course on the BRAWL circuit.

The website is moving and will be up and running shortly, maybe today. If I had a clue about computers, it would have been up a week ago.

johnbiscoe
Dec 07 2007, 10:42 AM
i don't think the pulling of the course is permanent, only while the logging is going on. apparently it will only be the last 6-7 holes being timbered as well. in the long run it may result in a more diverse course.

Hello disc golfers! Once again, I unfortunately have to change the venue of the BRAWL tomorrow. We will have to play the Timber Ridge course instead of Big Branch due to circumstances. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I will make a decision on what to do about the last tournament tonight. It will either be at Big Branch or Timber Ridge, with the finals being at Timber Ridge. Thanks for your patience. Please spread the word. Can someone cut and paste this to the message boards? I don't have time today. Thanks.

The weather is looking better for tomorrow. It's not supposed to start doing anything until the afternoon. We will get this tournament over quick so everyone will get home safe. We may have to shorten the second round to nine holes as had happened in the past. Thanks

A big thanks goes out to whorley for hosting the event at late notice. The course was in the best shape that I have ever seen, and the weather only made things more of a challenge, espically the drive home. I had my windshield freeze over a couple of times, but the roads were decent. See everyone in 2 weeks at Peaks View.

Go Cowboys!

Since it's beginning the Winter Doubles has always followed the same schedule. It will be played on the Saturday prior to the NFL Championship which is typically 2 weeks before the Superbowl. This was different in 2002 because the NFL took a week off after 9-11.

Okay. Saturday, January 19th.

for Spotsy Winter League 1/12 we will unveil the new 27 hole layout at Hawk Hollow at which point it will remain in the ground. The added 9 holes will play as par 31 to make total par for 27 94. Old holes won't be re-numbered, we will just add letter holes in a couple of spots so there will be the option of playing 18 or 27 at any given time.

MTL21676
Dec 20 2007, 05:49 PM
are the holes similar to those we have played in the VTI?

johnbiscoe
Dec 20 2007, 06:08 PM
they are most similar to what we played the first year. there will be 3 between 9-10, 1 between 15-16, and 5 between 14-15. all 5 of the ones between 14-15 will be in the pasture side of the field beyond the corral rather than partially in the corn field. two of them will be the same holes as used that first year (the second one and the one to the corral).

MTL21676

nice the corral hole (that was a par 4) was a fun hole!!

Congrats to Whorley on getting his first BRAWL win since 2006, a long over-due win for sure. There was a nice turn-out of 43 players for the event today in Lynchburg, but I'd say next week at Golden Hills there will be at least 50 in attendence.

You've been THE guy for so long, that you forgot what happens now with the elections.

The new coordinators START on Sept.1st now (to help with the coming years scheduling) and election results are announced at worlds(maybe sooner).
The ballots go out electronically to be voted on with the regular PDGA elections(or you have to request by mail if you have no email)around mid June.
You had until like mid May to announce in '07 and you just sent a little bio about yourself and why you wish to be coordinator.

Then after you get trounced in the election (like I did), you wait for the newly elected guy to resign 2 weeks later,(like I did) and then you are the new state coordinator (like I am :D)

Or you could just let John keep doing it , as you all know noone else but him wants to deal with all the BS that goes along with being a state coordinator, and everyone will just write him in anyways. :D

randyfristoe
Jan 05 2008, 07:50 PM
I would be willing to throw my hat in, but I'm doubtfull that I would be elected.

what is the formal process for nominating people...or can big headed asses, just nominate themselves?

Also, Richmond is finally getting on its way to having a formal club that hopefully will be worth a crap.

We are having our innaugural bagtag challenge on the 27th at Bryan park, to help get Richmonders moving and shaking. Registration is at 8am and tee 9 we will throw the yellows in the am and then the blues after lunch. Between rounds we are going to have our first club meeting of the year and hopefully elect new officers.

20$ will get you a bagtag and your membership into the club.
With luck and if the response is large enough in advance then we will provide some BBQ for lunch.

also, on the 13th at Bryan park is a triple doubles event.
pick your partner for rounds of DDC, Golf, and MTA
this is a no cost event and therefore, no prizes, but bragging rights are what it is all about anyways.

from there we are all looking forward to Hyzells winter doubles.
on the 19th.

i'm pretty sure big-headed asses can nominate themselves, i too was once a big-headed [censored] who nominated himself.(now i'm a big-headed [censored] who needs to divest himself of a dg responsibility or two). i have been elected twice when not on the ballot.

i will try in the next couple of weeks to come up with a realistic list of what is actually entailed in the job and put it up for more discussion. i'm currently working on getting ODDS together and a proposal for dodge to give the ORG.

Hello Virginia! As some of you might know, a small group of us Southwest Virginia diehards have been busy over the past few months installing an 18 hole course located at The Franklin County Recreation Park in Rocky Mount, VA. Well, the time to break this baby in is fastly approaching. We will be hosting a tournament there on Saturday, January 19, which will be the 4th event in the madly-popular BRAWL series staged annually in the area. 2 rounds of 18 holes starting at 10:00am sharp (reg. ends @ 9:40am, players meeting @ 9:41am) with pro($20), am($10), ladies($10), and junior($10) divisions offered. Rocky Mount is located on US 220 approx. 25 miles south of Roanoke, VA and 40 miles north of the North Carolina state line, so we would like to see some of our friends "south of the border" make an appearance. The course itself is very challenging, a good mix of open, woods, legnth, finesse, and elevation, playing to an am par of 62. Feel free to IM me with any specific questions.

Team Spotsy VTI Team Tryouts will be held on Sunday 24 February at 1000 at Hawk Hollow. Format will be one round of 27 holes.

Requirements for tryouts:

Member of Spotsylvania Disc Golf Club (Dues are $15 and must be paid prior to start of tryout round)
In order to raise money for the club there will be a $10 fee to participate in the tryout which also must be paid prior to start of tryout.
No payout upon completion of the tryout.

At least 6 of the 8 male players must be from the Spotsylvania / Fredericksburg area. Additionally the masters division is age protected so at least 2 of the eight players must be at least 40 years of age on or before 31 December 2008. (So this means if there are not at least two players of masters age that qualify in the top 8 positions, then the top two masters players regardless of how they finish on the day of the tryout will be on the team.)

The following players are "grandfathered" as previous members of team Spotsy: Lugo, Todd, Clements, Hasnain. Although grandfathered, if they desire to compete on team spotsy they have to qualify for one of the positions on the day of the tryout.

For those that qualify as team members, the entry fee will be $40 to compete in the VTI.

Bryan Park - Triple Event Doubles

Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008 - Meet 8:30AM at Kiosk - Bring a partner or just show up and get a partner.

Sorry this is soooo late, but since the organizers didnt put it up I figured I would.
First event: DDC (Double Disc Court) Starts at 9:00 on nearest soccer field just beyond playground. Beginners welcome. Play all other teams. Kind of like 2 on 2 volleyball without the net or ball. 2 discs going back and forth at the same time. Quick games to eleven. Whistle blows at 12 noon to end all games and start golf.
Second Event: 18 holes Disc Golf. Starts at 12 noon. Same Partners. Doubles Captains choice from the Blue Tees.
Third and final event: 3 pm MTA (maximum time aloft). Back out to the soccer fields. Same partners, each player gets 5 timed throws. Best time for both players added together. Throws must be caught with one hand.

This tournament is just for fun. No ribbons, no prizes, no cost. If you are not familiar with the field events, it will be a good opportunity to learn them, and also good practice for the State Tournament in Fredericksburg, which includes DDC, MTA, Distance, Accuracy, Golf, and Freestyle events. If it is a success, two more will take place the 2nd Sunday of Feb. and March, for more practice before the States in April.

Just to keep it interesting, a scoring system will be attempted to determine the overall winning team with the most points. Each game of DDC won is worth 10 points. Each stroke below par(62) in golf is worth 10 points. Each second of your best MTA time is worth 10 points. Plus a 25 point bonus CTP on hole 11. Way too much fun!

Vince, I will not be there. My arm is shot, ruined, toast. I can no longer throw a sidearm because of shoulder pain. My backhand is average at best. A course like Elk Creek requires accuracy that I don't have right now. You'll have to wait like everyone else to see if my surgery next week will fix it. If it doesn't then i'm done.

Wah wah wah...as I recall, gualdoni shot better than I did using his left hand after his surgery. It seems that Vince beat Hunter with his left hand at elk creek. So it seems to me that if you want to live up to your montra, than you will just have to step up and start throwing left handed for a while.

OK - on the record, yes, next year (2009) will be the big Five O. Even contemplating whether I really want to play tournaments. Would be nice to play and not have to pay...I guess that's what a casual round is for.

Many, many thanks to all 62 players who came out and supported the 11th Annual Ice Bowl at New Quarter Park today. I was very surprised and happy we had 31 Open, Advanced and Intermediate Teams. Special thanks to all the teams from Richmond and my brothers from Bayville and Newport News for helping raise nearly 500 lbs. of food and $1000 cash for the York County Food Closet. You guys are the best. You all did a good thing today and you should be proud of it.

Thanks again!

I thought for sure I would see an open doubles group break 50 from the blue tees, but it was not to be. 51 was the best score.

Great tourney. Thanks John Roy for putting it all together.

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the Blue Ridge Disc Golf Ice Bowl at Walnut Creek!

We had 42 players, raised $430 for the Arc of the Piedmont and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and collected 290 lbs of food...

Jesse Pritchard used numerous mulligans (Extra cans to save your can) to fend off Rene Devito, David Vance, Brian Sward, and Terry West.

On the ladies side, Donna Raines held off Dee Proffitt whose white bean chicken chili won top honors in the Chili Cookoff for lunch...

Are there any tourneys at Munden Point this year? I travel to VA for work often and want to try to play a tourney there. Played it 3 times for the first time yesterday and shot an overall -17 short to short, (-10 best round). How would that compare to others on that course?

Thanks to all who came out to the Super Doubles. 35 teams! And yes congrats to team John Biscoe for cashing!

what are we going to do next year if we have more than 36 teams? Should plans be made to have pros and ams start at different courses and then switch for the afternoon round, or take a chance that less than 36 teams will come to play? Will it depend on the weather - this year it was great - is that why so many teams came out? Would you have come out if it was cold, snowy, wet?
