Yessiree it was strange gathering on a Tuesday but 80 folks quickly got into the spirit at Da Grange! 4 players to a hole and ghost holes were added on 1 and 10. Weather was flat out fabulous, there was the usual grange crowd + some visitors from places like Michigan, California and North Carolina Slide show! Da Grange's Darkside (http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=8672#Open) C tier filled with 80 players (http://www.sharkysshots.com/albums/userpics/10002/DSC_2129.jpg). Schwebbie's (http://www.sharkysshots.com/displayimage.php?pid=7884&fullsize=1) cashing streak is alive, just barely, he was in a five way tie for last cash and pocketed a cool $3. :)

The Virgina Open was a huge success, it was one big family party! (http://www.sharkysshots.com/albums/userpics/10002/DSC_2246.jpg)
The Veterans (http://www.sharkysshots.com/albums/userpics/10002/DSC_2233.jpg) were honored on Memorial Day weekend. The 1000 rated players (http://www.sharkysshots.com/albums/userpics/10002/DSC_2235.jpg) were recognized also. I spilled just a little beer on my camera and the dang thing quit working before the awards ceremony. :( It turned out to be "just" the lens but anyway I still got a lot of great sharky shots, enjoy!

Wicked awesome times this weekend! I'm glad to finally put some faces with names. MJ, Shack, Demar...great to meet you guys! Sarah I wish u lived by Philly!
What can a lady say, I can't resist some good golf, drinking, tiki, pool and hot tubbing it. Even though I didn't cash, still had a great time and I will be back next year.
Congrats to MJ, Weidle, Shack, and Glenn on your wins.

I never said that. It's false advertising to put it under "PDGA Tournament Info" when it isn't sanctioned. I will be there regardless.
Hate to admit it but perhaps Fuzz Head has a point. His interpretation seems to be "PDGA Tournament" Info, likely meaning PDGA Sanctioned Events info only and mine is more like PDGA "Tournament Info", meaning the PDGA as a a group and Tournament Info for all local and regional events. I'm not sure there is a rule about what can be posted on this topic but if there is, I've been breaking that rule for almost ten years now.
Good stuff, Chris. Thanks for straightening me out. I look forward to more conversation on this.

I think Chris is just being his usual, lovable, smarty-pants self.
I look at it this way. Most of the people who attend these tournaments are PDGA members and this thread is a way of getting the word out to those PDGA members who want to know what tournaments are happening, sanctioned or unsanctioned.
I always look forward to Chris' thought provoking, intellectual commentary. It helps me see the world from a different angle.

Hey people...we have some really great, new courses down here in Southwestern Virginia that will test every aspect of your disc golf game. Alot of folks missed out on the Randolph Park Open and the great new course up there, don't miss out on experiencing the Sontag Open as well. The Sontag course in Rocky Mount is geared more towards the pro-caliber players in it's set-up, but the inclusion of the shorter, red tees in the upcoming Sontag Open will make this a very friendly event for the Intermediate players as well. The tournament is coming up on Sunday, July 19. Hit me up with any questions you might have. We're only 1 hour north of Greensboro, so alot of you NC lurkers need to come on out as well.

The Golden Ticket Series
The Golden Ticket series is comprised of five PDGA events and culminates at the Blue Ridge Invitational at Falling Creek in Bedford on November 29. There are five divisions—Open, Masters, Ladies, Advanced, and Intermediate. The winner of each of these divisions at each tournament earns a Golden Ticket invitation to the prestigious BRI. If the winner of the division has already earned a Golden Ticket, then the invitation will be passed down to the second place finisher. Ties will be broken in a sudden death playoff. Players may not decline the invitation and pass it on to the next highest finisher, even if they know that they can not attend. Prizes at the BRI will be proportional: The Open division will receive two shares of the prize pool, Ladies, Masters, and Advanced will have one share, while the Intermediate division will recieve a half of a share. Two dollars will come out of each player’s entry at each of the five PDGA events.
The Tournaments:
RANDOLPH OPEN – JUNE 28
SONTAG OPEN – JULY 19
BLUE RIDGE OPEN – AUGUST 9
ELK CREEK CLASSIC – SEPTEMBER 19 & 20
TIMBER RIDGE OPEN – NOVEMBER 28
The Finale:
BLUE RIDGE INVITATIONAL – NOVEMBER 29

OK fellow bored viewers in the vicinity, there are many good reasons to take a day trip this Sunday to Rocky Mount, VA and play the 2nd annual Sontag Open. The weather forecast is awesome, we have experienced low humidity and moderate temperatures most of the summer and this weekend looks to be more of the same. The course is in great shape and located in one of the most beautiful parts of the Commonwealth. It will test every aspect of your disc golf game I promise. Plus, the cost to play is the among the best bargins in sanctioned tournament disc golf, the payout will be customed-stamped Innova plastic that looks sweet. Raleigh's B-tier is full, so no need to go there and possibly get shut out. And finally (pun intended), we are a part of the popular Golden Ticket series that showcases the sanctioned events of South-Central Virginia. Hit me up with any questions you might have. Hope to see you Sunday.

I'm surprised Sheriff Hysell hasn't admonished you yet for asking a question like that on his PDGA Tourney page, but since he ain't looking right now...
There are several courses to choose from:
Newport News Park is closest to LAFB, and offers a well laid out but average course. We have weeklys every Tuesday evening @ 6PM and a glow tourney this Saturday, 7/25/09. New Quarter Park offers more of a challenge to your game and is the best course around IMO. We are having a monthly at New Quarter on this Saturday as well. Start @ 10AM. If you need more info just PM me or give me a call. 757-220-0959 John Roy

It's time for some team golf! The 2nd Volunteer Cup Team Challenge is Sept. 26 and 27 at Fossil Hill DGC in Greene Co. Tn. Last year, we had 10 teams in the field and this year we hope to have 12. I really hope to see 2 or 3 Va. teams this year. John Roy and his crew came down last year and said they would be back. There are too many good golfers in Va. to not have teams looking for the huge Volunteer Cup trophy to take home. The gauntlet has been thrown down...

AT THE END OF DIVISIONAL PLAY, THE TWO TEAMS IN EACH DIVISION WITH THE BEST RECORDS WILL ADVANCE TO THE SEMI-FINALS AND ALL PLAYERS ON THOSE TEAMS WILL CASH. Just have to say I can't wait for the Classic this weekend! It is one of THE best tournaments around! Those guys do such an incredible job with running it and preparing the course. Was out there this weekend and everything looks incredible!! I also want to add I think it is ridiculous that one week before the tourney, there are 28 people pre-registered! What do we need to do to get more participation from you disc golfers for this event?! Come on out to Appomattox this weekend, show your support and have a great time at an awesome event!!!!! OR ARE YOU JUST SCARED TO PLAY A TECHNICAL COURSE LIKE ELK CREEK? If you're scared, say you're scared....if you're not, get you butts out there! Come on, these guys work so hard, let's show some support for them and this event! It is well worth the drive to attend this event. DON'T MISS IT!!!

yep, that was my last pdga victory. i won because brinster's ride (steve was like 14 at the time) got him there late the first round and he took 7's for the first 3 holes- i think i won by either one or two strokes. watching brinster throw at that point was amazing- he was about as big as my leg and was throwing 450 or so with ease.

Plenty of baskets to give away and the putting champion will receive an engraved Ipod again this year. Hope to see a lot of VA discers out this year.

I just played my 1st Elk Classic. Let me tell you this IS a AWESOME event! This is a VERY frustrating course but you can shoot great scores. As did Jimmy Camdon, Hysell, Jim Conrad and a lot of others. The course is designed to tear up up mentally and it will do just that! This is an event that if you do not go to next year then SHAME ON YOU! Shame on you for not coming this year!!!!!!!

The Elk Creek course looked great this weekend. It's either getting more play than I would have imagined with all of the other courses in the area or there is a crew doing an incredible job of maintaining it. It still played tough. When the score get posted (hint, hint) you will see that only a few people scored in the 50's each round. I think that it was only me and Camden. He just managed to do it 8 strokes better than I did. Congratulations Jimmy on some fine play.

More people might go if it wasn't scheduled on the same weekend as an A tier that's fairly close by. C tier vs A tier, unless it's Hawk Hollow or something most pro's follow bigger payouts. Make it a one day B tier and I'd go.

WOW! Such a brilliant deduction. In fact the A tier you compare to is a doubles event in Charlotte, so not much comparison there.
Many know I am biased on this, but I would much rather play a c-tier singles event at Walnut Creek than a doubles event in Charlotte. Better course, and closer to home. C'ville is a better town than Charlotte too.

I think Kilby was commenting on Elk Creek based on his subject line... Patapsco was also last weekend, but it is Pro Only, is 2 1/2 hours north for me, Elk Creek is 90 min south. The courses are 3 1/2 hours apart, minimum.
Yeah, Elk creek isn't going to get the NOVA pros to come down when they can play an A-tier locally, but it is still a well run tournament that was a lot of fun (until I pulled a muscle). Just because you're on the outside edge of the normal drawing radius for a C tier doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it.
Tell me when the perfect weekend is... oh, there's probably already a tournament scheduled.

More people might go if it wasn't scheduled on the same weekend as an A tier that's fairly close by. C tier vs A tier, unless it's Hawk Hollow or something most pro's follow bigger payouts. Make it a one day B tier and I'd go.
in actuality elk creek was on the schedule prior to the patapsco event. distance between the 2 is sufficient that they will need to coexist either way.

Great Course - shrink Paw-Paw and that is Signal Knob
B-Tier - lets go !!!
WEATHER FORECAST - is... NO RAIN - NO RAIN - supposed to be a BEAUTIFUL day - low humidity and cool. All showers will be through the area as of Saturday night into the early AM of Sunday (I am sure it will "shower" ONLY while I set up tournament central at 6 am)
NOTE: I have convinced Landon to allow me to put his course on the PDGA site - so, no more worries about directions etc... although, Sharky, I thought the flyer pretty much covered that?
We are at 33 players 22 hole course - 88 is the limit -- 66 is my goal (3 per hole) - and par is 66
...33-22-88-66-66 weirddriew?
Flyer available at www.spotsydiscgolf.com
You can register via email or call with - Name/Division/PDGA#/Email
Chris Hysell got a 12, if I remember right?, on a 127ft hole at a previous Shag - so, you know the course has to be challenging!!! He won a bucket and a shovel though. I miss Chris, wish he would come play again...

Results are up for the 9th Shenandoah Shag
THANK YOU all who came out to support the event - I hope you all had a great time.
There was no rain, but a little windy at times - and the sun greeted us after lunch to make it a very beautiful day. Our defending champion, Ian, had an injury and could not make it - we all hope he gets better and will see him next year.
The 2009 SHAG crowned Ronnie Turner as the MPO division champion, winning by ONE stroke. Chris Hysell won the MPM by ONE stroke and Lewis Graninger took the MPG division by TWO strokes --- some close competition!
Some notes:
Bob Cannon ACED the "Triple-Mando" BEFORE we started (sorry Bob) - and the Ace-Pot was won by Ryan Lugo after an "interesting" group CTP throw-off.
The Innova basket CTP contest was won by John Weaver - and the Revolution Bag raffle was won by Brandon Kilby.
Also, Signal Knob DGC has a NEW HOLE NAME - out of 22 holes, there are a few holes that have not been recognized with a name - on the back of the scorecards is the list of names so far - and during play, players are welcome to fill in unique names that come to mind while playing --- one hole name suggested for #14 was interesting, but I thought that is was a little odd. To my surprise though, when finishing my 2nd round on hole #14 a few people (not mentioned to protect their integrity) were rolling "monkey brains" down the hill, trying to actually bounce them into the basket!!! Therefore - we have officially named hole #14 "Monkey Brain Roll" --- Next year, we are going to supply "monkey brains" (maybe a few buckets full) at the top of hole #14 for ALL to enjoy this new past-time!!!
Again - thanks everyone - it is my honor to TD this event,
Brandon

Thanks John - guess I should of mentioned that the course does not have REAL monkey-brains laying around, or any monkeys running around at all. Landon knows all that "plant" / botanical? stuff also, I should have asked him what those things were...
Chris - I think hole #4 (Blues) is 430-460, a little uphill - not 100% on the distance, but whatever makes your shot that much more spectacular would be the right answer.
Another NOTE: Chris deuced the "Island" hole both rounds - to make up for his previous...6 or 8? - a few years back.
I thought for sure the 10, that was pointed out to me by the player who scored the 10, would win the "Island Castaway" award, but someone was able to successfully score a 14! - to take the honor. The record is a 22 by Eddie Foster - not during tournament play, but those guys play every Sunday morning, so my guess is that it was a windy day, at least.
I forgot to tell Ronnie - tear up the USDGC!!!

Not sure on the current numbers. I don't think the online list has been updated since the weekend.
Last year we had 67ish ams and 37ish on the pro day.
This is the problem with tournaments... have a 1 day pro/am that fills and its full 3 weeks ahead... split it to two days and people want to wait until the day of to sign up... this is the thanks we get for not charging $10 extra to sign up the day of this year...

I'll echo Brian that the course is looking better than ever. We also have tons of swag to give away -- including a free throw at the new and innovative CTP contest at lunch! Those of us in the club who know the format are psyched to see the CTP contest. You'll have to show up to see it/throw it! CTP contest will give away a basket and other prizes on Saturday, and I think the pros will have a chance at a basket and other prizes on Sunday, as well!
Did I mention that everyone who enters will get a players pack (we even got something for the pros)? Or that each division will have at least 1 CTP, probably 2?
The entry fee is reasonable, the course layout varies from round 1 to round 2, and the $5 lunch gets you a drink and several slices of top-notch pizza from our CTP contest sponsor, Dr. Ho's Humble Pie.
You get it. See ya at the course.

Why such low payouts at Walnut? Is it because of a low entry fee? Personally, I'd prefer higher entry and better payout. Otherwise it seems you lose money unless you actually win. After entry, gas, food and whatever else, you are in the hole unless you finish at the very top. Certainly wouldn't be worth the trip for someone far away. I don't mean to make a fuss, I just don't get the benefit of this.

It may not be obvious, but there are three "trophy only" players in the open division. There are only six effective open players. Six players at $30 each = $180. Payout for open = $186, split among half of the open field. There may have been a very small mix-up* in payout on the administrative end, but all divisions received a greater payout than required by the PDGA.
*$2/player PDGA fees were not deducted from total purse and were therefore paid out, and $30 trophy only player fees were not added into purse as planned (though not required). BRDGC apologizes for the calculation errors.

Thanks Dan. I didn't suspect anything shady, I'm just more curious about the reasoning behind a low entry-low payout tourney. I think Walnut is a beautiful course, and it just seems to me it would get more travelers and competitors with higher entry and a bigger payout, certainly in the Pro divisions.
Hawk Hollow Open is a good example of the possibilities. C-Tier with $65 entry, huge payout. http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=8005&year=2009&include_ratings=1#Open

My personal philosophy that I think the club shares with me -- most disc golf tournaments are prohibitively expensive, and in a time of economic hardships, most people willing to travel and play tournaments understand that it is not necessarily a profitable endeavor. Most do it for the love of the game and the chance to catch up with old friends, play a few rated rounds on a unique course, and possible bring home some money. BRDGC strives to offer a fun atmosphere at a reasonable price. Our focus may change in the future, and we certainly see the benefit of added cash, which we hope to acquire and incorporate. The AMs seem very happy with the low entry fee; BRDGC will evaluate increasing entry fees for the Pro's next year.
Comparing us to Hawk Hallow isn't exactly an apples-to-apples comparison. Our 1 day, $30 tournament has a lot to offer, but a 2 day, $65 dollar tournament with feast included on one of the best/most challenging courses on the East Coast may warrant a higher fee, especially if the demand to play is so high -- they fill every year.
Thanks for the dialogue, it will weigh heavily into our discussion for next year's tournament.
Dick
Oct 07 2009, 10:42 AM
There lies the rub. pros and even ams who regularly cash in the top places would probably rather see higher fees and payouts. those who just cash, occaisionally cash tend to like it either way. and most ams and pros who don't cash probably prefer the low cost events as long as the amenities are good. obviously there are exceptions to everything.
lately i have begun to worry about the gambling issue as i don't want to be the one getting in trouble for running a game of chance. you would think the pdga would have a lawyer on this angle, but i don't think we are large enough yet to have lawyers on tap or the money to investigate.

Even for a C tier, it worth the time to dig for hole sponsors or something to bring in added cash. High Five is pretty good example...Open Div had 4 players, paid out top 2 - $140 1st place, $85 for 2nd - and that was on a $40 entry fee...maybe I'll get more open players next year if the word gets out that our C tier pays like an A.

I hear you Shane. The Elk Creek Classic this year was a C-Tier for the pros and we still added cash paying out top 2 in a 3 player Open field $140 and $50 on a $35 entry and the pros still got a sweet players pack. The Masters got the same treatment with added cash and a players pack. Hopefully word will get around and Pro attendance will pick up at both our events.
