Well Timber Ridge was great! Good turn out and all of the people there were awesome. Mountain folks are the best!!!! Vince...... the views from you place are breath taking. I would love to see it in the spring and peak of the leaf season!
Now for the bad news:0(!
Dan Hoffman and Sara are moving to Taho. I wish them well and hope they have a great time. They will be missed! They have to be one of the nices couples it the state.

Thank you Jimmy, Sara and I appreciate that!....but...it's not a permanant move out west. I finally finished school, and Sara's taking some much deserved time off from work, so we're going to Lake Tahoe for a couple months. We'll be back in March, so don't fret! Only four days until the BRAWL rolls into Lynchburg on New Year's Eve! Peaks View Park is the second-oldest course on the BRAWL schedule. Everyone will play two rounds from the original concrete pads. We will tee at 10:00.
***There will be no lunch break between rounds***
We conservatively expect the second round to tee at 11:45, so everyone can be leaving Peaks View at 1:00 with plenty of time left to travel. We want to get everyone to their NYE party!

Some friends and I are going to be in northern VA close to Harrisonburg this weekend for New Years. What's the best course to play in this vicinity, preferably less than an hour away. I was considering one of the courses in Charlottesville but don't know anything about either one. Any reccomendations and descriptions would be greatly appreciated.

I prefer walnut Creek to Greene Co. if you are going to C-ville. Walnut is in a beautiful park, never any course traffic, and has several signature-esque holes. #17 is an empty the bag hole for sure.
Greene co. has lots of potential, but is pretty raw for my taste (I am spoiled by living in the disc golf mecca of Charlotte, NC). One hole is pretty useless in my eyes, an impossible 70degree angle or so off the teepad. Makes no sense to have to lay up on a hole for par when it is less than 200'. Again, there is lots of potential up there though. Keep a close eye on your errant throws!

Walnut Creek is a great course, but I would estimate it's at least 1:10 away from Harrisonburg. Greene Co. Park is a challenging course, but keep in mind that taking 33East over the mountains is very twisty in places. I've never played the Harrisonburg course, but I would probably recommend it since it will be the closest course to you.
The only course no one mentioned was Sherando in Stephens City. It's North of Harrisonburg about 50 minutes, but it's right off of I-81. Cool course with distance and accuracy.
Another idea is... if you're coming up from Chapel Hill, you might plot a course that go past Walnut Creek. You could go 86>29>Walnut Creek>I-64>I-81.

Hey PolishPower, I recently played Greene County and liked it. It used to be 9 holes but it is now 18. I didn't think there were any useless holes on the course. I had a shot in my bag for every hole but I didn't execute the shots properly when I played them.
Flick, play Harrisonburg. I really like that course. It has a lot of low ceiling shots and some elevation changes. Forget the extra driving.
cgoodwin
Dec 28 2005, 12:03 PM
Wow, tough choice. I looked up the courses mentioned and they all seem to be very scenic & have a nice mix of holes. I played the course in Harrisonburg last year and it was a good course with great views of the mountains but would like to catch a new one this time around. Probably leaning torwards making the drive to Walnut Creek or either Stephens City. Thanks to everyone for the info.
cgoodwin
Dec 28 2005, 12:13 PM
Hysell, you're right about the course in Harrisonburg being very good. Until reading the descriptions I didn't realize it was the only one in VA I had played before and I'm hoping to catch a new one this time around. With a little luck maybe we can squeeze in that course + another one not too far away. It sounds like you may like the greene county course better than walnut creek?

Dec 28 2005, 04:37 PM
the only mentioned one that i've played is Stephens City, and i think it's a pretty decent mix of distance and accuracy. we played a round of ript there today, and let me tell you, i need to learn to putt left handed and practice driving my wizard...

Dec 28 2005, 05:11 PM
I did play greene co. with all 18 holes. You are right, it is more like I am useless on that hole. I tried every poswsible shot I had, and could not get to the pin. For such a short hole, there was some personal dissapointment.
Stephens City is an awesome course too. Right off of 81. It is a haul from where you have to park to the first tee. Trust that if you walk out there, a course will appear.

Why would you want your course associated with Hawk Hollow? Your course is much better because you play your events with "Man rules". If a shot lands in the water, you can play it from the water. I would enjoy Hawk Hollow so much better if water was casual like Timber Ridge and Greene County. I love wet feet.

Virginians will have a mighty fine new course in York County near Williamsburg this year courtesy of Mike August and his volunteers. Mike gave me the tour on Friday and the course has just about everything but water hazards, plus some bonus terrain features like Civil War earthen walls nearby some of the holes. It will come close to 7000 feet maxed out with about half the course in the open and half in the woods with quite a bit more elevation changes than Newport 20 minutes down the road. Sounds like it could have baskets by April with some test rounds with portables coming in the next month or so.

New Quarter Park, in York County near Williamsburg, is Hampton Roads newest public course. The course is situated on about 40 acres of gorgeous parkland. Nine open holes and nine wooded with plenty of elevation changes as well as spectacular views of historic Civil War artifacts. Total length from pro tees is currently 6,972 feet.
All the fairways and connecting paths have been cut. Now I need help hauling the cut debris away from the fairways.
Newport News Disc Golf Club is sponsoring this work day with food and beverage for all volunteers.

You are probably 100% correct!!!!!!! I do put a lot of pressure on myself to perform well. When I do not perform up to my expectations I will show frustration. I am only upset with myself and no one else. It does rub off on the group and makes for a un-comfrontable situration. I have worked on this and have gotten a lot better, but it will probably never completely go away. I am just very intense and overly competitive! Guess that is why I have NO friends. MRI revelead partial tear of medial collateral ligament, but enough integrity left in the ligament to allow for healing w/o surgical intervention. Basically the same as a big-a#* "sprain". Rest, ice, compression, elevation, & lots of slow, resistance-free bike riding should fix me up in 4-6 weeks. Second place is the first loser VW, but there was two things about my second round I was proud of:
1) I had a putt to win on the 18th hole (although I missed it and blew-up on the playoff hole)
2) I beat Hysell by 1  :D;)

That's really nice. I should have tried harder than I did. Now that you beat me in a round I shouldn't have to give you any strokes when we have side bets. That will start next weekend.

Great Wytee Open at the Grange
Saturday 2/18 10ish
Spotsy February Monthly
I believe the plan is that anyone registering for the VA Open at this event gets to play for a reduced rate in the Great Wytee. Mike may have changed his mind. Rumor has it Wytee himself will be in attendance, beer in hand, elbow out.

There will be a super-terrific workday at Pratt Park this Saturday (2/11) from 10 am (8am if your name is Eric Olsen) 'til ??. On the agenda are major fairway manicuring to #s 7, 8, 12, & 17, and the grooming of two brand new alternate holes (#s 2 & 3) behind #1 to avoid the overflow-parking lot conflicts that have plagued #s 2 & 3 at VA States for the last couple of years.
Be there or be rhomboid!

It was great fun in the snow today. Adam Vanderslice was the big winner, winning 10 out of 12 skins. Jimmy took plenty of video and I can't wait to see it. Of course that mean BRAWL series director confiscated it to make a dvd. At least that's his excuse. I really think he's going to use it to 'big arm proof' his course.
Vince, thanks for giving me something to do through the winter months.

Of course Chris had to buy the most advanced camra on the market. Therefore the camra was smarter than me. I think at one point I got confused with the pause and record buttoms. Think I was recording when I should have been paused and vise versa! I did get most of the skins match. Mostly tee shots and putts. The **** flip out screen was so small I had a hard time following the disc. Of course there was only big arms in the finals and they throw it a ton! By the time I started to get the hang of it the match was over. Vince I am prepared for all the jokes and making fun of my work!
Vince
I too thank you for the BRAWL events! 99% of the courses I have never played. EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET UP THAT WAY AND PLAY THESE COURSES!!!!!! The people up there are GREAT! If I live long enough to retire; then the foothills and mountains is the place for me to go!

Congrats to AV on cashing in during the skins match Saturday. I would have loved to stayed and watched, but I had to take Mr. "Frustrated in 5th place" home and listen to an hour of his pain and agony. Thanks to Vince for running great events and keeping everything legit at "BRAWL headquarters", and also a big shout-out goes to Chris Hysell for providing the am. prizes each at each event. You have got to be kidding me!!!!! I could see through the flip out lens. Just had a hard time following the disc on drives and upshots. Lens was so small the disc looked like a dot. The lens also had all of these options or something running around the sides; the view area was even smaller. I was getting the hang of it latter on during the round. I do deserve another shot at it.

Green County Ice Bowl was yesterday (2/25/06) and the turn out was good and the course was great!!!!!! I played most of the BRAWL events this year and there is 2 courses that everyone NEEDS to play! Appomaddox and Green County! A long with the Grange these are differently in the top 5 or 10 courses in VA. The App. and G. C. needs players playing on them to get them broken in a little better. If you have a free weekend make plans on visting these courses!!!!!!!
