Wow - only 7 people signed up for the EMC squared (Eastern Masters Championship Challenge). Looks like a lot of added cash for those that show up and play. Loriella is looking good and I am sure the Hawk Hollow will be its usual difficult self.
September 25 & 26. Two rounds at Loriella (long to long, then shorts), two rounds at HH. Looking forward to the first masters only tournament in Spotsylvania. Either people got a lot going on that weekend or are they skeered?

The USWDGC is upon us and on behalf of the NNDGC and CR Electrical we wish all our Ladies from Virginia a safe journey and Good Luck is this weekend's event. I know you will represent well and hopefully have a great time.
Representing Advanced Division is our own Wendy Boettcher, and You Betch-er she's gonna play well.
In Advanced Masters we have Dee Proffitt who is looking to add a USWDGC win to her World's title.
In Advanced Grand Masters we have Carol Silverthorn, who it seems has more wins in PDGA events than Tiger woods in the PGA.
Sherri Morris will be playing for the Intermediate title and the other ladies in her division better be on their game. Go Sherri !!
Finally Jenn DeVries will be representing in Recreational Divison and she is playing well and often of late. Jenn will have her caddy, Walt Winnington, winner of the Elk Creek Classic along to support and advise.
If you see these lovely ladies, wish them well. This is a very cool thing and I'm confident all our Ladies will be deep in the cash.

Alright fellas you gotta give it up for the Ladies of Virginia who took part in the USWDGC this past weekend. We sent 5 to the event and they nearly all cashed. Congrats to Dee Proffitt and Carol Silverthorn for their wins in FM1 and FG1 respectively, Wendy Beottcher cashes in FW1 taking home 5th spot and a 2nd place finish for Jenn DeVries in FW3. Sherri Morris gave it her best shot and represented well in FW2 but finished out of the cash.
We are all proud of the effort and hopefully you guys had fun.
Good Luck next year.

Heres a primmer for those unaware of the symbolism behind the bruiser artwork.
http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/ff323/BluemonTimber/Bluemont/squirerockwell300dpi.jpg
Base photo of "the" tree was was taken just after the grass had sprouted on the mound. Photo-shopped it to make the grass look more even and did some serious cut/paste & contrast enhancement to make the basket more visible.
Squirrel tail and thumber disc are taken from a peach roc Spencer Thurman did in the late 80s. Artwork was hand drawn by Randy Lahms father. It wouldnt work on the discs but at least it made it on the shirt.
http://i536.photobucket.com/albums/ff323/BluemonTimber/Misc/squirreldisc.jpg
Pretty sure she won the fight! Best quirky bruise symbolism I could come up with. Considered asking Mike Trapasso to "drag up" for the pic but never got around to it.

Ummm.. No that would be incorrect. We will offer Men's and Women's Open (or Pro), Open Masters (or Pro), Open Grandmasters (or Pro) (C'mon Will, Scotty, Jeff, Lewis, etc.). We haven't had Open Senior Grandmaster players in the 9 or so years I've been involved, but hey, they are more than welcome. As is everyone else. Check it...

Jeff
I had planned BYOP and I'm thinking one division, but that is subject to change. I want to get input from the players. If there are only 4 Open players and 10 Masters I would say one division but if the Advanced players play up that could be two divisions. Note the careful use of the phrase "OPEN Doubles Tourney" instead of PRO. Open to all players.
gotcha
Oct 13 2010, 09:18 AM
Nothing wrong with naming a tournament "Open" which offers professional and amateur divisions, including age-based / gender-based divisions. "Open Masters" or "Open Grandmasters" is incorrect because those are not open divisions. Referring to "open divisions" instead of "pro divisions" is a common mistake made by folks all over the globe.

OB has been flagged
It took nearly five hours to mark the entire course.
Thanks to Tom Coffin for flagging holes 1 & 2 and Tom Usselman for helping with the remainder of the course.
OB is marked with three different methods.
Orange flags and OB Stakes on holes 1-3
White Flags and OB Stakes on holes 4 and 18 (Hole 4 has some safe areas behind the thorns on the left and In the trees on the right)
The remainder of the course is white flags only.
We tried to get as close to the thorns as possible but many locations were flagged at the mow line to improve flag visibility.
Latest Weather Channel wind forecast is 8 MPH out of the SSW so expect 10 to 15 MPH winds on the higher course elevations.
Late Fees go into effect at Midnight.

What is the best PDGA CTier payout strategy?
I've tried several options
50% field
40%
players packages
trophy only in the mix
top 3!!!
what percentage of entry fees do you use?
(we have a lot of facility costs up here in DC and
then there's the pdga sanctioning, insurance,
and players fees)
should tournament directors and officials be paid
for their work?
When there's plenty of added cash I like the idea of spreading the wealth a bit and paying 50%. That way everyone gets a taste, and hopefully feeds their hunger. Also, makes it less stressful to a Pro in a small field worried about losing money all the time.
At this moment in time I don't think there's enough money to go around to be paying officials and TD's. 1st place at a c-tier is still only $100-$200.
Trophy only division should only be an option if their money goes into the Open purse IMO. Why else would it be offered?

Trophy only division should only be an option if their money goes into the Open purse IMO. Why else would it be offered?
couple of reasons:
trophy only is for ams that want to play pro without
impacting their am status
or really anyone that just wants
to play but cannot afford the higher rates
but more importantly, the lower entry of 'trophy only' helps
to cover expenses of the tournament which might
not be met if there's a low turnout in the field.
Their numbers should not impact payout #'s at all.

here is a great sumation of the fun going to happen this weekend by Mark from the Cedar Club:
******* Seneca Ice Bowl this Saturday ******
Details: http://www.md-discgolf.com/phpbb3/viewt ... f=2&t=3269
You should come out. Entry fees go to the Maryland Food Bank, which is has particularly strong need this winter with the struggling economy.
This is the first day of a MD vs. VA competition. If you can make it both to Seneca on Saturday and to Giles Run (a great course near the old Lorton Prison in VA) on Sunday that would be great, but if you can only make it to Seneca on Saturday, we need you. Everyone who comes out helps us beat VA no matter how you play. We particularly want women, juniors, and seniors (60+), their contributions are doubled. The contributions from legends (70+) are doubled again. Women legends would be the bees' knees. Bring your wives, girlfriends, children, and parents. What could be better than playing outside as a family in the winter.
Lunch will be provided. Last year a good time was had by all.
The course is at its best:
* no ticks
* no gnats
* no mosquitoes
* no stilt grass
* low humidity
* not too hot
* well groomed
* perfect for rollers
* can pretty much guarantee it won't have rain
Plus, if you have not been out recently, the tees signs are in and look great! Come check them out.
The gate will open at 8:30. 10:00 tee time.

Any of y'all know what the closest USDGC (or whatever name you want to call it) qualifying event is going to be for Virginia? I know Atlanta Open is one, but it sure would be nice if there was one here or in NC or MD.
And, how do the qualifiers work? Do you play your normal divison or do you have to play open? Just wondering...
Thanks in adavnce!

The Virginia rep is usually chosen in the summer with the lowest combined scores from two events. One is at Hawk Hollow and the other is at Loriella. There are usually a few qualifiers on the east coast throughout the year.

Folks I'm pretty sure I've just been part of some Virginia Disc Golf history. If not, oh well it was still worth it.
The clubs of Newport News and Bayville just hosted their 14th Annual Ice Bowl, which is pretty cool by itself. But the related numbers are just as awesome. Check it...
6 players to a hole
3 ghost groups
120 players
Over 500 pounds of food
Over $ 2500 raised for the Rick tortone ALS Fund
It will take a minute for it all to sink in but I'm just amazed. Thanks to everyone that came out and supported and everyone that made it happen. You guys are the finest group of humans I've been around. I think we just raised the bar.

Sunday 1/2 of Killer B's is at Newport News Park for ALL divisions. Format likely to be long tees both rounds for the open/master divisions and short/long for remaining divisions. We don't want Newport News to become the forgotten park. There would likely be time to play New Quarter after the tournament. Rounds at Newport News don't take very long as compared to NQ. We have "No Quarter at New Quarter" coming up in the beginning of May. Flyers for NQ@NQ will be posted soon.

__________________________________________________ _____________
Other news from the Shenandoah area - We now have 5 courses - Sherando / Signal Knob (Landon's course) / Signal View (Maurertown FLY course) --- and a new Courses in Franklin Park - Purcellville + Jim Barnett Park in Winchester.
The Maurertown course will be 18 holes by next year and will be hosting a B-Tier event.
I will be running a tournament at Jim Barnett this April 23rd (Non-PDGA) as a fund raiser for the course + introducing a PDGA sanctioned tournament in 2012. Also, I will be introducing a PDGA event at the Franklin Park course in 2012 - depending on the course and park director, it may be an AM only event the first year. I am also considering running a "Shenandoah" series which will include all five courses. At the end of the year (At the final of the five tournaments) I would split a pot of $500 (maybe more depending on participation) for the top 4 Pro spots and Merchandise / Prizes for the top 4 in each AM division. Of course, trophies and a traveling trophy for the top PRO which will be engraved with their name each year. Basically, a "Mini-ODDS" series to improve participation and the overall disc golf scene in the area. Any feed-back on whether this would interest people would be appreciated.
Peace,
Brandon

With the "I have sent a check" and people saying they are going to send entry via Pay-Pal - I would estimate 20 spots left.
Pay-Pal is accepted through Saturday night, please try to send it at a reasonable time. I would ask for anyone sending Pay-Pal to do so by 9PM - I would like to try to get some sleep.
The record for the latest entry to the Sherando Spartan was by Brian Skinner - called after mid-night (Sunday morning, day of tournament) and I had to tell him he was on the "wait list", along with the other 2, or so, people coming with him. They decided to make the trip from the VA Beach area, and made it in due to no-shows ---- AND --- I believe Skinny' won the tournament. NOTE* - I will NOT be answering my phone this year after mid-night...or even after 9PM.

New to this year’s tournament will be the playing of all three layouts of the course by all competitors. The event will use the shorter Red Course (50 rating), the long and challenging White Course (60 rating), and the even longer and more challenging Blue Course (67 rating, the hardest permanent course in the state of VA since it’s creation). The event will consist of 72 holes (four 18 holes rounds) over the course of the weekend.
On-site, primitive camping will be permitted at the course, but please keep in mind that while the park has nice restrooms, there are no shower facilities. The park is also closed to auto traffic from dusk until dawn.

Bridge closing for everyone who uses Rt 29 to get to the park!
The bridge on Red Hill road coming from Rt 29 and before you get to Old Lynchburg Rd is closed for repair. If you turn onto Red Hill Road from Rt 29, a detour will take you down Dudley Mountain Road, and it will add almost 20 minutes to your drive.
From 29 South/Lynchburg
Turn East on Plank Rd (at the Crossroads store)
drive 4.4 miles
Turn North (left) on Old Lynchburg Rd
drive 2.6 miles
Turn right into the park
From North (Greene Co) and West (Staunton)
Get on 64 East
Take exit 120/5th Street
Turn South (right) onto 5th Street Extended at the end of the ramp
Drive 7.4 miles (road changes names to Old Lynchburg Rd)
Go straight at the stop sign
turn left into the park
From East (Richmond)
Use exit 120/5th Street

Please check this out and pass the word...
Due to several contributing factors and in the best interest of the players, the host club and PDGA standards for Tournament play, as Tournament Director I regret to inform our players at this late date of a change of venue for all Amateur players (except MA1) for the 14th Annual Fall Colors Disc Golf Tournament. All AM players are to report to New Quarter Park on Saturday, November 12, 2011 instead of the previously scheduled event at Newport News.
This change of venue will not affect Open and MA1 divisions scheduled for play on Sunday, November 13th.
If you were planning on playing the 14th Annual Fall Colors at Newport News Park on Saturday, November 12, 2011, you will now play at New Quarter Park in Williamsburg. All registration, Player’s Meeting, and start times will remain the same.
There will be no rounds played at Newport News this year.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me right away. I apologize for the inconvenience to all players. New Quarter is looking pretty good right now as is the weather and I’m sure it will still be a great time so please come out and play.
Thanks for your support,

Ron Smith shocked the crowd by
Taking out Eric Smith the 4time champion 2-0
Then we all had an AMAZING lunch of BBQ
And Mac&cheese provided by Sean Mooney of
Restaurant 3 in Arlington
The food was EXCELLENT and plentiful
There was so much food we had another course
After the finals and doubles
the final four was spectacular. BIG shots by Naved, Chris and
Ian dominated the tee on the "white loop"
But, as always, it came down to putting
As Ian Liddell put on a clinic starting things off with a shocking
60-70 footer on hole 2. Ian never looked back and held
On to take the win even after taking a circle 4 on 5.

This year the MAWO is being hosted by the county of Powhatan and its legendary par 72 Fighting Creek Monster.
This is a legitimate pro par 72 9300' course.
This is the first time that the course is going to see a sanctioned event and so it will be great to see just what kind of round ratings can be had. It would be so wonderful to get a 1010+ rated player to come out and set a benchmark.
Schwebie...I'm calling you out.
