I have to ask, what did you think of paw paw? The courses, the area, the people?

I talked about my experience with Paw Paw on the Courses thread under the Private Courses topic. But I will expand on your other questions.

The people are great, but I really have yet to meet disc golfers (enmass) that are not great.

The area? Very remote, I thought my lil' hybrid was going to die going up and down that mountain. :(

Overall, I liked the designed intent of both of the Paw Paw courses, there is the possibility and potential to create really great disc golf out there. However... I will not be back unless there is some chainsaw TLC taken to about 6-8 holes out of the 36.

Personally, those few holes are what I would not consider disc golf holes. I could go into depth with what I have learned about course design by some of the top guys in the biz, but this is not the place for it.

BUT!

There are a few holes that I thought were absolutely great. #13 on the Woodshed (I believe that is the number.) It is the 556ft hole shooting down and up a slight valley with a line of trees blocking the remaining 100ft of the hole.

And the holes which I could not stand, imo if a fairway was carved through the trees they could be some of the best wooded holes I have ever played.

I think it is a great thing that Spencer has done with his land, if only more people would do that too.

The author of these statements would like to state that these comments are not directed as an insult to any party envolved with the Paw Paw tournament, course design, or course installation and maintenance.

Mr TwoPutt thanks for the review...we at the Woodshed had to make up our own rules for course design in 1993 and 1994 as we were poised to change the way DG courses were built.

all that existed were little pitch a putt courses.

A few of our design philosophies are as follows:

1. Far as you can throw, twice, plus twenty feet...for length

2. You can cut a tree down...you can't put one back.

there are many other rules we went by, but these will let you know why things are the way they are.

There was no design rules in 1994...and Chuck Kennedy may have still been an AM? Think back...we were using the new plastic for distacne called a "whippit".

WE Changed the way DG courses were viewed and designed.

There were the Steady Ed design rules which of course were mostly along the pitch and putt lines. Those rules did include removing sufficient trees for "fairways." Ed helped me with my first design at North Valley in 1989 which daringly had several par 4s for its time. I had already been in a few Worlds as a Master Pro by 1994 and late that year, the Disc Golf Course Designers group was formed.

While there may not have been an organized set of contemporary design guidelines in 1994, they've now been there for quite a while. What's the excuse today? The problem isn't adding trees which takes time (although several holes could actually use a few), but taking a few out. I asked a local Paw Paw player in my group what Spencer's specific reason was for the pattern of trees that were cut and were not cut on Whippin' Post #4 which was very new at the time. He paraphrased the design philosophy as: "Spencer first looks over the pattern of trees and determines which ones will mess (actually used another word) with the players the most. Then, he cuts down the other ones." :) Of course, that's a design philosophy, and it's consistently applied in several places, and it's his property. I fully defend an owner's property rights to design how they please.

Folks, I know this is going to sound strange coming from the course designer/builder, but....

I am asking all golfers to boycottt New Quarter Park Disc Golf Course.

The County has succumbed to pressure from a nature preservation group to stop mowing the grass at the park, including the disc golf course. I have explained to them that people are not going to pay $25 per year, much less $3 per round to play a course that has calf-high grass (in some places it's waist high), I have made several requests to have the grass mowed, all of which have fallen on deaf ears.

So I'm asking everyone, especially those of us in Hampton Roads, to refrain from playing at New Quarter until you hear from me that the matter has been resolved.

If no one plays the course, they will hopefully get the message.

Dick
Jun 29 2006, 07:21 PM
my .02( not that you asked) is that they won't notice or care. better to have disc golfers stop by, call, or write and ask when the grass will be cut and express their worries about getting lyme disease. maybe the worries of getting a possibly fatal disease from a county park would help. make sure to try not to be mean or demanding about it, rather express concern and maybe express how much you do like the course when it is mowed.

Of course, that's a design philosophy, and it's consistently applied in several places, and it's his property. I fully defend an owner's property rights to design how they please.

Fully agreed, I only wish I had the land and the resources to build my own disc golf course(s). Heck, if I had a championship course or two in my back yard, I probably would never leave, and then never give a flying flip what other people think about it.

Like I said, my statements were only my personal opinions. I was never trying to offend anyone or make Spencer redesign his courses, they are of course his courses.

And the comment about Seneca being pitch and putt? Maybe from the short pads, but from the pro pads, even with many of the holes being "reachable" by pros, does not make them pitch and putt. If that was the case, any hole less than 500ft would be considered pitch and putt.

An e-mail addy would be helpful.

Seneca Creek State Park in MD allowed volunteers(discers) to go through a litte training on their mowers, thus allowing them to cut the course. These days the rangers are involved and open with us,but having a club helps!

Perhaps they won't notice. But since I also work for this County (in another department), they are a bit more aware than the average local government.

The requests to cut the grass have not worked. Initial traffic at the course was high. Since you have to sign in to play (eventually it will cost you), they should notice the reduction in traffic.

I'll try the lyme disease angle.

august
Jun 30 2006, 10:15 AM
Well, the lyme disease angle worked (thank you Dr. Evil).

Parks and Rec called. The course is closed until after July 4 at least. One can imagine that York County, VA, where Cornwallis surrendered British forces to the Americans, is a busy place on July 4. All grass cutting has been focused on the historic battlefields.

Sometime after July 4, the grass at New Quarter will be cut every other Thursday or Friday.

Had a chance yesterday to head up to Danville to play a round up there.

The 9-hole course is a little warmup for the new course that was recently installed on the other side of the park.

If you haven't been to see the new course yet, I suggest going down there, but don't go alone. Several of the holes needs some traffic to knock down weeds so if you don't see where your disc lands(several blind holes) then you will be looking for a while.

It is a mixture of open and wooded shots. There are a lot of birdiable holes, but there are also holes that you can easily get a 4 or 5 if you get off of the fairway.

My favorite holes on the course are holes 3, 5, and 18.

Things that will be improved soon(I hope)
<ul type="square"> Tee Signs - Visible Metal poles mark the current location of the tess signs are going to be installed soon. Tees - A few tees need to leveled off. Most of them are ok, but there are a few that have a sharp incline or decline . Weeds and Foliage - Grass and weeds need to be cut or "Rounded-Up" [/list]

Other than that, it is a great course IMHO. If you go there, the first tee is located near shelter area 7 across from the baseball field. Then the tees after that are normally visible. If it isn't visible from the basket, look for a path or orange arrows painted on the ground. There is a lot of eleveation change on several of the holes so going early in the morning would be the best option until the fall.

by craiger on the MD board:

As many of you know, I have been helping Spence and Gabi build their house in Paw Paw. So far it has been a lot of fun, helping them bring the house of their dreams into reality. Like so many things in life - certain things are beyond our control - such was the case yesterday. Five of us were lifting a beam into place for the great room roof, when something went wrong, and the beam got away from us. Spence got hit in the head, and was flown away via helicopter to western MD(*(& Memorial). I spoke with Gabi last night, and he is in good spirits, but he's fractured a vertebrae and is going to be out of commission for a while. He was shipped to Shock Trauma in Baltimore last night, where he will find out was his treatment options are. He had not lost any feeling in his extremities, and he could move everything when tested by the EMT - so all indications are that he is going to be ok. I'm not sure of anything really - how long he will be in Baltimore - or exactly how severe his injury is. I wanted to let you (his frisbee family) know what happened, and ask that you take a little time and keep Spence and Gabi in your thoughts and prayers. They have both given us all so much.

would love to courdually invite all of yall to attend our tourney

Last year we sold out pre reg is strongly reccomended
This year we decided to do our tourney a little different we will be having a 1 day am event and a 2 day pro event.I know that we will probubly lose some am players because it will be a 1 day event, but we trying to create a huge gallery for the pro feild the following day. This is something new,but were are going to give it a try.One day all you ams (with the exception of B.B)(just kiddn) will move to pro status and wouldnt you want a gallery to watch you play in a huge tourney.I think it will bring excitement,or it might make a few of us a little nervous having people watching us play.
We cant please everyone because someone will find something negative to say about what they didnt like ,or what you should have done.
To all the people who will not come because it is a 1 day tourney ,oh well sorry its nothing personal. If you like you could play in the pro feild and play 2 days,or you can support disc golf and come and be part of the gallery.

here's just a suggestion big fella.

if you have ams sat only and pros saturday and sunday, where do you think the majority of the ams will be sunday? i would bet they will be at tyhe beach or on the way home!

now if you have ams play 2 rounds sat and one sunday and the pros play a second round on sunday, i would be willing to bet most players will stay and watch, especially if they have to wait to get paid out! plus am payouts can be figured while the pros play the 4th round.

just a suggestion...

Here is a list of a few good players to attend

Don't forget that everyone in the field has a shot at a new basket.

Also, for you out-of-towners looking for a place to stay, there is one of these (http://www.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=TournamentInfo&Number=560367&page=3&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1) within walking distance via the foot/bicycle bridge that crosses US 460.

Reading the recent article dealing with honor in Disc Golf World finally spurred me to share a story from the VA Open:

In the last round, with only 3 holes to go in the tightly contested Advanced Division, Ricky Snapp called together the members of his fivesome and said something along the lines of, "Hey guys, I was replaying the last few holes in my head, and on hole 1 (two holes prior), I think I got a 5 instead of a 4." We went through his throws, and sure enough, we agreed that he was correct and his score was changed accordingly.

If he hadn't said anything, no one would have known. I asked him what made him mention anything to the group, to which he responded, "It didn't matter if anyone else knew. If that incorrect score was turned in and I knew it, I would have to live with that. Winning a few discs isn't as important as playing the game how it should be played." (Or something to that effect)

Hats off to ya, bud. Congrats on moving up to Pro.

good fun today at Hawk Hollow

Just to let everyone know, I did infact end up passing out. Luckily Logan and Steve got me into Steve's truck and got some cool air on me.

I feel much much better and got dinner down with no problem. Thanks for all that helped me out today.

I did infact end up passing out.

I had a similar heat incident today, the first time in all of my 33 years I think that the heat has ever caused me sickness.

I was a little overboard on my H2O intake today while out at the Commonwealth Games event in Christiansburg. I carried about 48oz of mostly water and some gatorade both rounds, and drank nearly all of it. It was a very humid, overcast morning, and I was sweating it out mostly. It was VERY stuffy in the bottoms of those steep valleys out there. Then, in the afternoon, the sun came out so it was the ole heat/humidity double-whammy. Very argeous day of golf to say the least. Long story shotened, I ended up "losing" my lunch apple, sunchips, and the last 18-24 oz of water/gatorade I drank upon completion of the second round while back at the shelter helping Greg with the scores. Very embassinging to say the least, but I am feeling better now that I'm back home, had a shower, and ate some dinner.

Everyone be careful out there all-day in the heat, espically those among us (myself included) that are not well-chiseled specimins.

I know what you guys mean about the heat. I went outside once today to check the mail and it was hot. I'm glad I won't have to check the mail tomorrow. Nothing beats XBox and air conditioning.

copied from the blue ridge dgc board, posted there by chris faunce:
July 29th is the day. Start time 11:30 Reg-10:00-11:00

Prizes-yes I will be giving away Day Ski passes to winners/randomly.
I will also be giving away other prizes which may or may not include (depending upon turnout)such as Mnt Bike rentals, Paintball party, Out Of Bounds credit, Ski passes, tubing passes, Custom Discs, T-shirts.

This will be a fun event & cost $15 and include lunch, Customn disc, CTP's. One division (unless we get some kids) with winners taking home the bigger prizes. But the real prize is playing at the Highest Disc Golf Course in Virginia. So I hope to get a small enthusiastic crowd up on top of the mountain. It is always 10-15 degrees cooller here than most places in Virginia.

Support your local Disc Golf course

Keep in mind that we will be playing 27 holes. That will test your abilities.

I might include a horseshoe putting contest & a distance contest ( down a slope where the winner will probably throw 800") into the mix.

Please tell you friends and neighbors to mark their calendars July 29th @ Wintergreen

Took the opportunity to play this course on Fri. I'm no expert player or designer, but I found this to be a very nice course. Like Mike said, the grass needs to be mowed, if nothing more than the fairways. Number eight is kind of wicked. Not very long, but it drops off severely on the left, right and behind. I threw four tee shots on seventeen and couldn't get the right amount of anhyzer to get it near the pin. It kind of reminds me of number two at Hawk Hollow, just not as severely uphill. The course will require every shot in the bag. Take note that the next tee is pointed out by an arrow at the bottom of the pole and the map is not terribly accurate(Mike says this problem is being taken care of). Remember to complain about the grass height if you play there. This course has great potential if the fairways get mowed(IMHO)

I went out yesterday to take a look and the grass is really bad. Even worse, if you complain to the front desk, the guy is telling people that there's nothing he can do. The administration folks are not getting the complaints because the attendants are not passing them on.

I suggest the following:
1 - email to [email protected] and complain
2 - call 757-890-3500 and complain
3 - If you complain at the park, ask the person at the front desk to log in a record of your complaint.

There's nothing more that I can do. Parks and Rec is ignoring my inquiries.

Vince Whorley wins open
Tim Barr 2nd
Caleb Wood 3rd (*1st cash)

Rusty Von wins masters
Landon Furlong 2nd (also won the basket in the CTP competition)

Greg Clemons wins Advanced Am in a playoff over Steve Jewell.

Kevin Morris wins Am Masters

But most importantly, everyone attending had a great time due mainly to Don, Julie, and Mitch putting on a great day of disc golf for everyone as always. And we finished before the rain hit.

Here are the complete results for the 9th Blue Ridge Open. I would like to thank everyone that helped make the tournament a success including the Disc Golf Spirits that held the rain off until the tournament was over. I would like to especially thank John Biscoe for encouraging me to run the first Blue Ridge Open nine years ago.

Bob Williams (PDGA 13833) aced number 6 from the white tees and took home the $122 ace pot. Landon Furlong (PDGA 14159) won the basket CTP and took home a portable Innova Disc Catcher. Will Lewis (PDGA 7674) finally ended his Blue Ridge Open curse and took home some cash.

Good luck to all of the east coast disc golfers that decided to stop at our tournament on their way to the Pro Worlds.

A message from York County Parks and Rec.

New Quarter Park Disc Golf Course is not officially open and conditions may not be amenable to playing golf.

Got an update on this yesterday and the grass will be cut when its cut, whenever that is. They are working towards developing a grass maintenance plan for the course, but are unsure when that will begin. They have asked for my input, which I will provide.

In the meantime, please don't complain to the Parks people anymore. Their position is that the course is not officially open and though people are welcome to play the course, there should be no expectation that the grass will be cut when you get there.

I suppose everyone by now has heard about Masters World Champion Brad Hammock's actions during the 2006 Pro Worlds, as described in detail here (http://www.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Cat=&amp;Number=415331&amp;page=0&amp;view=collap sed&amp;sb=5&amp;o=&amp;fpart=105&amp;vc=1) . My question is, how would this have been handled if he were on, say, the lead card at this year's Virginia Open playing with the likes of Rusty Von, Washburn, and Crump? I'm guessing, not the same as it went in Augusta :D

They are at golf courses I build

The storm did mostly tree damage to the course, but one dead pine tree fell and crushed the back end of the short tee on Hole #13. Looks like it can be repaired with quickrete since it's just the back 12 inches or so, but it's still a pissah because these pads were just installed back in May.

I'm heading out there now to cut downed trees.

Yea, that's pretty surprising considering the following was posted only six days ago:

From 'closed indefinitely' to re-opening in six days is quite a miraculous turn-around.

Sep 12 2006, 04:11 PM
They weren't sure how long it would take to clear the debris that I cut up last week, so the initial report was "closed indefinitely". That way when they open six days later, they are heros instead of villains for not opening when they say they will :D

Only damage that will need repair is the white (short) tee pad on 13. It will have to be replaced, but is playable as is. Only the rear right corner was crushed.

Easy Jimmy, don't have a fit! It's only an effort to avoid adding temp holes and have a smoother running event. The tournament was overwhelmed last year with more than 100 players.

This year the plan is to have the pros play two rounds at NQ on Sat., then a round at NN on Sun., with the final nine at NN. Ams will play two rounds at NN Sat., then a morning round at NQ on Sun., then back to NN for the final nine.

I think you will still be able to get your Hot Dog King on.

johnbiscoe
Sep 13 2006, 01:28 PM
just because a course is long does not make it a big arm course if it is well designed. 500 foot holes play to the big arm much less than 400 foot holes. imo the course in va that rewards the big arm the most is sherando from the long tees which is considerably shorter than hawk hollow, new quarter, etc.

Chris Hysell
Sep 13 2006, 02:00 PM
I've had that discussion with Jimmy today. If the holes are long he will complain because he didn't approach well. If the holes are short he will complain because he didn't putt well. In truth he only cashed at Newport News because I wasn't there to take another cash spot. I control his destiny.

BTW, I won Sherando this year on a windy day over a much longer thrower.

And another BTW, my next scheduled round of disc golf is Oct. 13th. Don't bother calling me to play somewhere. I am retired.

Just a note about Fall Colors, details of format and play at the tournament are not yet finalized. We are working on that right now. There will be a posting in early Oct. with all the info. We are all looking forward to a great event and the use of New Quarter this year. Mike August has done a great job out there and if all goes well we could see the 10th Annual Fall Colors as an "A" Tier next year.
BTW I'm all for limiting field sizes, there are several reasons why, speaking as an active TD (my opinion only) and after last years VA Open Bryan Law has all my support at any venue. Looking forward to seeing all of you soon.

Did anyone ace Hole #7 long at Dorey this weekend?
Oh, it must have been me. Tee-Hee! :D

august
Sep 15 2006, 08:22 AM
I'm all for limiting the field to 72 per course (72 ams/72 Pros). It may require a slightly higher entry fee and maybe a bit more sponsorship, but will result in a more enjoyable event for everyone involved.

Fivesomes at the Grange have never been that bad IMO.

To me, it doesn't matter if it is all 5-somes or all 4-somes, that thing that always causes a snag is if there is a group on every hole, and there will always be backups if this is the case, 4 top or 5 top.

sillycybe
Sep 15 2006, 10:01 AM
I'm all for limiting the field to the number of holes you have. I'm a 2x TD and this year was good having just under 70 players, but last year was 80 people on 18 holes and it caused some back up issues. This year at the Grange, I ended up in a 3some behind a 5some and it really sucked.

Chris Hysell
Sep 15 2006, 10:11 AM
Hole 7 long at Dorey is shorter than hole #7 short. BTW, I have aced 7 long and short, 8 long and short and 9 short. But since I retired, none of this really matters.

Jeff_Peters
Sep 15 2006, 10:55 AM
Chris,
In order to save your finger stregnth for the X-Box, you should list all the hole you haven't aced instead of all the ones you have aced. You could cut yout typing by 50-75%. :D

why would it require either of those??? the only reason it would is if you're caught up in the numbers/payout game where you judge events solely on those factors.

Format details for this tournament have been ironed out, so I thought I would start spreading the word.

Two courses will be used this year; Newport News Park and New Quarter Park. Directions are in the PDGA directory and will also be on the flyer to be produced, probably this week.

The pros will register at New Quarter on Sat. Nov. 11. The Ams will register at Newport News the same day. Pros will play two rounds at New Quarter. Ams will play two rounds at Newport News. Sat. tee time is 10AM for all.

On Sunday Nov. 12, the Pros will play one round at Newport News starting around 10AM. The Ams will play one round at New Quarter starting around 9AM. After lunch, there will be a final nine played at Newport News on the Super Nine course. Top finishers playing in the final nine will be dependent upon field size. Awards presentation will follow the final nine.

Other details will be enumerated in the flyer.

Hey Juf. Did you know I was retired? I was. I put every disc golf related item in my house on September 6th. I was done. I hated the stupid game. Yesterday I stopped being a baby and went out and threw a few holes. The discs went where I was aiming and there was no longer any anger. It will be a slow recovery but I will be back. Just look for me at local events. I don't plan on travelling any this year.

The Flyer:
http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/0JwgRd0D176N3eCICzijDhzbSUqlWxYmxRnSwSis_MOUoxxRXV E5Jjxbn2oI4ywArdnx7SykRjIy0Om5fj2x_A/FINAL_Flyer_PDF.pdf

This will NOT be a PDGA event. Sorry if that causes anyone to opt out, but if so, please reconsider. We're a new club (like 2 weeks old) and started the tourney planning too late to get all our ducks in a row with the PDGA. But I guarantee this will still be a quality one day event worth your attendance.

Our main goal is to get Richmond golfers to come out and play, as well as introduce you all to Richmond's Citizens Against Crime (www.cacrichmond.org). This is an awesome organization that is doing some amazing things here in River City, and they have BIG plans for the future where disc golf is concerned. All proceeds (after 100% payout and the $1,000 added cash!!!!) go to CAC. If for no other reason, play this tournament because you'll be doing something fantastic for our fabulous city.

We WILL provide child care at the course during the tournament and are trying to also arrange the same for the players' party. Please email me ([email protected]) if you will need the babes attended to ...

Sponsorships available starting at $35.00. I'll post a link for that asap. We also encourage all Richmong disc golfers to join the club. More info on that to follow (check out the club link on the PDGA website.)

River City Disc Golf Club: www.iamwhois.com (http://www.iamwhois.com)

That's all for now. Email me at [email protected] for more info on any of the above.

Cheers~

I'm amazed that your PDGA Tour page didn't have the link to their website.

I also can't believe that they can't spell amateur.

I'm sorry not alot of information has been posted about the Jam. It is this Saturday at Walnut Creek. The course is in great shape for the weekend. We will not be playing short to short and long to long as we have in previous years. This years Mountain Jam will feature the best holes our course has to offer. There will also be a random draw doubles tourney on Friday at 4:30.

We have plenty of custom Mountain Jam discs available in Star, champion, and DX plastic!

Hope to see everyone in Cville this weekend.

Anyone pre-registering (payment needs to be received by Friday night) is entered into a drawing for a free entry to the Hawk Hollow Open at the end of October.

Come on out and join us!

The tee signs have now been installed and the tee pads have all been dressed so that Hysell won't trip and hurt his ankle.

Everyone intending to play in the Newport News Fall Colors Tournament should go out there and play this new course since it will be one of two courses used this year.

not as of yet, i am considering some back surgery over the winter and am debating making vti 07 a fall event. our area schedule usually gets made up in november so i wouldn't expect anything definitive before then. if it is in the spring it will be whichever of the 2 last weekends in march there is no supertour on the west coast. if in the fall my preference would be the last weekend in october but that would be dependent on the regional pdga schedule.

John,

Would ever consider seeding restrictions?..By that I mean the highest pdga rated player on a team would be the #1 seed, the next highest, the #2 seed and so on...

Or if not this, then some type of restriction?

Or if there is no type of restrictions, then would all the seeds for each team be made available for everyone else to see prior to the tournament so teams could work on match ups that they want....?

nope, that's the beauty of coaching (like vince did the first year in leading blue ridge to the final). i also don't see requiring seeds to be announced in advance working out- who would have to announce first so that the rest could "work on matchups"?, etc.

imo the strong teams will continue to seed best to worst and it is likely in the best interest of weaker teams to do otherwise.

mike's idea sounds good though. compressed discs i have got. :(
