Outstanding turnout, great weather....if only I could putt.
The player package for todays event was way above average.
A Pro line disc, T-shirt, Lowes lanyard, beer huggie, I mean...drink huggie, milkshake, pencil, bumper sticker (Innova too, not one of those tacky Discraft yengs) cap, gloves...
it was HUGE..

Special thanks to Brad Allison and Jimmy Johnson of Lowes (no really, thats the guy) for all the sweet bling and all 40 players who came out and supported. Spiritworks Foundation is a worthy cause and a good time was had by all. Thanks again!

who were the big winners at timber ridge??

cefire
Apr 21 2008, 11:18 AM
Toney repeated his title this year with a comeback from the second card. I believe he shot 55 from yellow and then a hot round 55 from blue tees. Ian got second with 53/58.

Kevin Clark got his first Advanced win and Sheila won the women's div.

Not sure about masters and grandmasters but they all seemed to be shooting hot.

The rain held off until the awards ceremony when some large storms started to roll in...other than that the weather was fantastic and Timber Ridge was, of course, awesome.

Thanks again Vince!

Great job Randy and to all the volunters who helped out during the day. There were waders to retreive discs out of the water holes, beverages on hand for break, and the event itself was run in a very timley manner. There was two seperate playoffs and the awards ceremony still started just before 6:00pm. Efficient work like that is appreciated by all, espically the travelers.

Even with the beautiful weather, turnout was terrible to say the least Although there were quite a few tournaments we had to compete with (seneca, paw paw, loriella sunday doubles ). If you were looking to get off the waiting list or switch over to the am side, you definitely missed your opportunity! johnbiscoe
May 06 2008, 11:07 AM
no, not lame. i will not artificially prop up the open division because the masters were more on the ball when it came to registering. open and ladies will get a larger slice of the sponsorship pie relative to masters/gm. other than eliminating masters/advanced and herding everyone into one division (heard it before- don't agree for a variety of reasons) what would your suggestion be? i am still of the opinion that age is a more valid means of dividing players than an obviously flawed ratings system.

You and I haven't really had this discussion John (so I don't know your reasons for using age as a criteria for divisions)- but it's lame for alot of reasons - none of which have to do with how fast someone can register for an event. And it's not your event that's lame (not even close :) ) - It's the whole system that allows inequitable reward for THE SAME SCORE THAT IS LAME. Make sense of that for me and perhaps I will change my opinion.

My suggestion - see MSDGC : Men - Men over 50, entry fee scaled by rating. Give trophies to "shadow" division winners (the prize for the best over 40 guy you're giving a rock to anyway) - pay deep. There's no logic in giving a guy who shoots the same as the #4 Open guy twice as much money just because he's over 40 - none.

Ian_Liddell
May 07 2008, 12:36 AM
I understand the want and need of age separated divisions, but 40 just seems absurd to me. If it were up to me, 50 is where the Masters division would begin. These guys that are well capable of kicking my butt get to pick and choose where to play based on their competition and payouts. A 40 year old shooting a worse score than me certainly did not earn the bigger check in my opinion. 40 is no old man. I'm with Craigger, lame. Also, the ratings system isn't THAT flawed. It's a fairly accurate account of how you play in PDGA tournaments. While not everyone's rating is accurate, I strongly believe most are. If you play a decent amount of tournaments your rating is a pretty good representation of your skill level.

august
May 07 2008, 08:22 AM
40 is when the effects of gravity begin to show their effect on a body. Some bodies age better than others, but I think 40 is still a good age for Masters. Remember when 35 was Masters? Now that was absurd.

If I recall correctly, Mr. Biscoe was having serious back issues in his late 30's. I think it would be unfair to expect him, or any other person similarly afflicted, to continue competing in Open until the age of 50.

With all due respect to the valued opinions of others, I feel that for various assundry reasons, both social and physical, that 40 years of age is a good minimum for Masters.

I don't know where "twice the money" is coming from in this discussion, but simple math shows that if you have more Masters than Open, then it is logical that #1 MPM is going to win more money than #4 MPO. :D

TD's have a number of choices when it comes to hosting an event: traditional age-based divisions, select age-based divisions (like MSDGC), ratings based divisions and, of course, one division (like USDGC). Likewise, players have choices as to which events they decide to compete.

yes but it also makes just as much sense to add the most money into open where the most and toughest competition is.

I will be attending this event simply b/c I love the course, I fully support what John does for disc golf, the meal is incredible and I just love playing tournaments....

BUT

more masters than open is pretty lame, esp when I'm a pretty good open player and there are 4 masters rated with or higher than me and 2 more with 2 points of me.

more masters than open is pretty lame, esp when I'm a pretty good open player and there are 4 masters rated with or higher than me and 2 more with 2 points of me.

So let me take a stab at this....

I'm guessing you would consider it less lame if:

* Biscoe had limited the number of players eligible for the old men's division.
* Biscoe had lowered the entry fee for MPM so even if the geezers outnumbered the whippersnappers, their payout would be less.
* Biscoe stipulated that any geezer with a rating higher than MTL would be required to play open.

:)

TD's have a number of choices when it comes to hosting an event: traditional age-based divisions, select age-based divisions (like MSDGC), ratings based divisions and, of course, one division (like USDGC). Likewise, players have choices as to which events they decide to compete.

Well said.

based on current field make-up and projected added cash it appears to me that first place will be approximately the same for masters and open.

most people seem to care more about cashing every time than competing at the level that they are actually capable. i think in too many divisions, people are getting used to cashing while playing bad or just cashing regardless of play. theres no real incentive to become better, or to have a great weekend. why try to play your best in open and get rightfully rewarded, when you can play alright and make the same money. its like tiger dropping from pro because hes sick of not winning every one. why stay in open, he might get third. theres no reason for that, when he can dominate the ams everytime. fortunate for us, he likes to compete at a level hes at.

i also believe people of a high caliber play better when faced with higher competition. either because they have to, or are inspired to. with great players shooting good golf instead of great golf, the sport actually slightly suffers.

Tom will be playing in Columbus, Ohio and Knoxville, Tennessee, 6/28 and 6/29. Tickets go on sale next Friday, May 16th. It has been a dream of mine to see Tom live for years, but I've never had the chance. His last tour sold out in minutes, I expect this one will as well. Ticketmaster has a system in place to try to prevent scalpers, since there is such a high demand for his tickets. Tickets will be limited to two per person, and will be will call only. I haven't decided yet which of the two shows I will see, I'm gonna try to plan it around some nice disc golfing. Probably whichever area has the better courses, or courses on the way.

If anyone is interested in such a trip, or has any input please feel free to post or give me a call.

walked through hawk hollow with vray and benry this morning- the flood which mauled everything vti weekend 2007 was nothing compared to the chaos wrought by the 6 inches of rain we got 2 nights ago.

all bridges washed out- the 2 steel ones are still not found, hopefully they are merely submerged rather than in lake anna. they only weigh 400 pounds or so after all. the 2 telephone pole ones are found and won't be a huge problem to move back into place with the tractor.

baskets of holes 15 and 16 both washed away but hung up in trees and are found thankfully.

for those familiar with the course- the basket of hole 10 has debris in the chain assembly!!! water was approximately half way to the tee of hole 13!!!!! we estimated that the creek was 250-300 feet across at it's widest and likely 15 feet deep in some spots. absolutely freaking insane.

course is closed to casual play until further notice- i hope to have it playable sometime in early june.

Man, I have been really pleased w/ myself with setting my personal best (49) at Pratt Park at States until . . .
I got the results in the mail today, showing me w/ a 58. I confirmed w/ the TD, then I got to thinking, how is that possible? Now, I had visited Laszlo's quite a few times before that round, and I started on 4. I'd bet my right thumb that I added up the card after playing 18 and waiting at least a half hour for accuracy (I kinda remember doing that), finished the round, then walked back up the hill, mentally blacking out three 3s on 1, 2, & 3. What a drunken tool. Kinda reminds me of looking for my drive for 5 minutes at The Grange on Friday, only to discover it already picked up & in my bag. PBR = bad!

Now I feel like a jerk-store for not exactly bragging, but at least proudly acknowledging a score that I didn't even come close to attaining on that day. Sorry to everybody (including me) who mistakenly thought that I was a decent disc golfer; I really didn't mean to mislead. :o

You're not expecting fruit beer to be ready that quickly are you Ray? I don't have much experience, but I did a Cherry Porter using Paw Paw cherries - and it took a year before it was ready.

veganray
May 16 2008, 03:26 PM
It'll be perfect. I use very little fruit (just enough to tease) & very aggressive on-yeast aging (using my secret yeast suspension technique) to get to fully ripe flavor in 100ish days for both fruit/veg beers & hi-gravs (which is 95% of what I brew these days).

gang4010
May 16 2008, 11:13 PM
Cool,
sounds like you have more experience with it than I do. What exactly is a "yeast suspension"? (Please note - I didn't ask what the secret technique was - as it is obviously a secret :) )

Isn't the reason fruit beers take longer is because of the complexity of the sugars?

How much fruit is very little?

veganray
May 17 2008, 11:14 AM
Yeast suspension is keeping the surface area of live yeast/green beer contact maximized for as long as possible, as opposed to letting the yeast settle to the bottom of the fermenter (or skimming it from the top). This can be done by agitating the fermenter periodically, but I have found that to produce off flavors, besides being inefficient. My technique is no huge secret (except to people I choose to keep it from); PM me if you want specifics.

Fruit beers tend to take longer for several reasons:
1) I tend to add fruit to my secondary fermenter, so that makes the effective OG higher with more sugar being added
2) The complexity & variability of the sugars in the fruit, as well as the physical structure of fruit, makes the fermentables less available to the yeast
3) The acids in fruit just seem to need "mellowing" to not have an over-assertive character in the finished beer, something that, in my experience, contact with live yeast seems to mysteriously hasten.

In the mid-90s, I was a commercial brewer for several years & teacher of yeast management & cask conditioning seminars, so these techniques are really more a product of hundreds of trials & errors (and those of my colleagues) more than rigorously scientific study, but they have worked to my complete satisfaction over the years.

Scores are up! Big thanks to Jason and Daniel for their help! I couldn't do it without y'all.

Congrats to Tyler Lemcke, Sherry Barlet, Mitch Hoeppner and Chris Argue for earning Golden Tickets to the Blue Ridge Invitational.

Tyler destroyed it and cruised to victory in the second round including ten straight birdies. He was on FIRE!!! Congrats Tyler!

If you've never won a PDGA in the Open division, come to one of my tournaments! I've run seven PDGAs and had six first-time winners in the Open division.

Sontag Open, Rocky Mount July 20
Big Branch Open, BedfordAugust 16
Blue Ridge Invitational, Appomattox August 17

The Golden Ticket series is comprised of four PDGA C-tiers and culminates at the Blue Ridge Invitational at Elk Creek in Appomattox on August 17. Come on NC guys, the Sontag Course is only 70 miles north of the Triad area and is guaranteed to be worth the ride.

Likewise all other Virginians, you all need to come down check us out down here at Sontag as well if you have not done so already.

The course is in it's finest shape ever as of right now, as all fairways in the woods have been re-trimmed of sapling growth, and the gravel tees have been groomed within the last week as well. White tees play 7220' and the red tees play 4820', both par 65. Par is easily attainable from the reds but not as much so from the whites. Plus, if this is not challenging enough, there are blue tees play to a legnth of 8745', and is as challenging a round of disc golf as you'll ever want to play.

Hope to see you out on 7/20.

The Triad will be represented well. I will spread the word at Tuesday Twilight tomorrow, which will be held at Lake Reidsville at 6pm (random Dubs). Lake Reidsville is 20 mins south of Danville, if any VAs can make it out.

We all look forward to playing Sontaq, as Jeff tells us it is super sweet. Perhaps we can get up there this Sunday for a practice round. To early to tell.

See ya 7/20 for sure.

For those who haven't played Sontag, it is worth the drive! It is definitely one of the top 3 public courses in VA along with Loriella and NQ. It is hands down the most challenging public course in VA. Come see what the hype's all about. There's a huge shelter that has a hundred picnic tables where the tournament headquarters and lunch will be. This park is first class, too. This course raises the bar for public courses in VA. Come check it out!

Count me in. I just need the mercury to climb to about 110 and I've got a chance -- wait for the heat to drop everyone else in their tracks and I've got a chance... I've never shot well at HH (though I love that course), but Loriella from the longs is all mine.

Are you coming down, Tony?

make sure you are hydrated well before coming and bring plenty of water- Hawk Hollow in the summertime has already claimed 2 victims.

i'd say ian is the favorite as well as he's been playing lately, tone tone has always done well at these things too, melt gibson would be my dark horse pick if he can stay away from the ladies...errr...i mean cattle.

Ian Liddell dominates both days winning by 4 or 5 the first day and 7 today to take the Virginia USDGC spot. He shot 2 55's at Hawk Hollow and a 58 on Loriella long to long- very impressive.

Tom Coffin won advanced both days, Vegan Ray won intermediate on saturday.

I have to say this is one of the best courses I have played. The potential for this course to be one of the best around and a very short drive from the Triad! Thanks to Jeff and all locals that worked on the course. Thanks to Vince and everyone that helps with all the Golden Ticket events.

We love coming up there and playing with you guys, always a good time. Hope we can make it to Big Branch, that place rocks as well.

Congrats to Stroker Ace for pullin off his first VA win. :cool:See you all again soon.

Thanks for the kind words about the course Tyson and a personal thank you for everyone who traveled out to play yesterday. We're real glad everyone who made it out really seem to like the course. This is only the beginning, we are already talking about how to make the 2009 Sontag Open even better for everyone. We'll be on the BRAWL schedule this winter, but in the mean time, we play random draw doubles every Tuesday at 6:00, plus the next three monthly tournaments are Sept 20, Oct 18, and Nov 15. Everyone come see us sometime at Sontag.
