If you've never listened to anything i've ever said before maybe you should listen now. Not one of us started playing disc golf for the money. I personally play a lot of tournaments. Playing well is more important than the money I get as a reward.

My point isn't about winning money, it's about not losing money. I understand many AM's prefer lower entry, and that works great for them. I haven't heard many Pro's complain about an entry fee being too high though. Especially if the payout is deep, like 50% of the field. In those situations often the bottom casher breaks even. To a certain degree you should be able to rely on your skill to merely break even. Of course everyone has bad days, but that's not what I'm talking about. It certainly doesn't help the payout when there are 500 Masters and 3 Open players, yet the ratings are similar and they shoot the same scores. That's a whole other issue.

Do players in "trophy only" Open division not contribute to the Open purse?

I understand what you are saying Ian. But I have heard people complain about entry fees being too high. That comes from the people who don't cash but like to think they have a chance. It's funny, in the larger masters division everyone thinks they have a chance to win. I know I do.

I have never been involved with a "trophy only" offered event but i'd guess that the money goes to buy trophies, not really subsidize the division.

as someone who has run a lot of events far and away the most difficult, soul-rending part of it is the begging for sponsorship.with a few exceptions it is difficult to show business entities the value inherent in sponsoring dg events. selling a lot of individual sponsorship takes planning, diligence, and often an out of pocket outlay of cash for the items (usually sponsor discs) used to incentivize these individual sponsorships. (as well as a well established communications network)

imo there is a place for low entry fee events without a bunch of added cash. competition need not be all about the dinero.

that being said... BUY A DISC!!!!

i'm pimping these supercolor buzzz as fundraisers for the HHO. $20 or $22 shipped, pm for more info.

Heh...everybody knows I keep my entry fees low because of the ridiculous Bay Bridge and Tunnel fees...$17 round trip ticket just to get here! True, it's not always about the money, but it's fun stuffing a bunch added cash in the poke too.

Ray - nope on the home brew...I actually won't be able to make it out to HH this time around, but I'm on the wagon right now anyways...and I'm 30lbs to the better for it.

Ian,

I know you only meant to start a conversation about low entry fees and payouts, but it fired me up a little. Last time you were here in '07 you said you would never come back to the Mountain Jam because you couldn't play well on our "short" teepads. I'm sure you were appreciative of the low entry fee then.

The other issue we face every year is that we are in direct competition for the better pro players with the USDGC. Do you really think we are going to pull these pros away with higher entry fees?

Our tournament has grown from a small one day tournament that only had 29 players the first year it was sanctioned in 2004, to a split pro/am two day tournament that had 101 players this year. There are no set templates to run a disc golf tournament. The template we use to run our tournament is successful. Added cash or not, we want everyone to play The Jam because it's a fun, well run event on one of the prettiest courses in VA!

Mountain Jam IIX
71 golfers on Saturday
30 golfers on Sunday
We paid out 136% of the Am entry and 128% Pro.

Shane and Daniel,

While I applaud your efforts on adding cash to the Pro purse, you are only proving the Mtn Jam's philosophy correct. Your pro purse paid out 200%-250% and your tournaments had a combined total of 7 open players. Maybe more open players will come in the future, or maybe they won't. I would say your efforts would have been better served to have added that additional money across the board where many more could have benefited - not only 2 or 3 people.

Jesse, I never said we didn't spread the added cash troughtout all divisions. You yourself know we do that here having played the tournament. We gave 3 out the 4 am division winners baskets this year and didn't take anything out of the am payout to pay for the players packs all attributing to a 340% am event value compared to 306% pro event value. In addition to that our pro entry was only $40, 10 higher than the MJ, for a two day event with a players pack. I don't see how we were that far off the MJ's philosphy of low entry fees.

Looking at the announcement I have, the ECC was $45 for pros unless you committed 6 weeks in advance... that's 50% more than the jam. Not bad, but still more than the Jam, and I definitely appreciated what you guys did.

I understand the issues on both sides. We had 6 pros plus 3 guys taking the trophy only option... playing for $10 each... so after fees, those guys might contribute $6 each toward the purse...

For every Ian that complained that if he finished second at a tournament that he didn't go to, he couldn't recoup his entry fee plus his gas money for the drive, I heard from 4 or so appreciative players who said that they loved not having to pay $50 to play a tournament...

Maybe we should go with the Gangloff method... 1000+ $80, 980+ $60, 960+ $40, everyone else $30, and Ian can pay his $60 and be happy. Or maybe its an argument that we should eliminate the middle age division and only offer Open and Grandmasters. Does Jim Conrad really need to be protected from Vince or Kilby?

Here Ye! Here Ye! Here Ye!
I have considered, reconsidered, and multi-considered the "Round Duration vs. Sunset issue"
Looks like I will have to limit the field to 54 players. (Threesomes)

Approximate schedule right now is:
7:15 AM Check-in opens
8:00:00 Check-in closed (Thanks for being a sponsor)
8:15 Tee assignments posted (Not enough time for a meeting)
8:30 Round 1 begins (3 hours 45 minutes)
12:15 PM Lunch
12:45 Round 2 begins or else! (3 hours 15 minutes)
4:00 Cards drizzle in for 22 minutes and 30 seconds
4:30 Payout ceremony and "Get out of Dodge"

Those round durations are based on threesomes with one or two groups starting on the Southern Nine last year.
Foursome round durations appear to be catostrophic.
Calling all players in before 36 holes are completed negates a "PDGA" event!

I thought about having the awards at Antonelli's but parking is just too limited.
Going to have to charge per slice for pre-paid/ordered hot delivered pizza or you're on your own for the 30-45 minute lunch break.
No Bluemont Bux, Amateur payout will be picked for you. Everybody git's what they git.

This decision is basically already made but I will review and consider any alternate options and opinions before posting my final decision next week.

Funny.

My not liking the teepads doesn't have anything to do with anything, other than having poor tees on a fantastic course. And no, I wasn't happy about the low entry fee, and neither was the gentleman who drove down from Delaware and won the tournament to be shocked by the payout he received.

Also, you are not in direct competition with the USDGC in any way. USDGC is invite only, and the majority of players are 1000+ rated. There are dozens of sub 1000 rated Pro's and new Pro's within driving distance of Walnut. USDGC is clearly not the reason why they aren't there.

It's not about me, I'm just trying to look out for my division and my sport. There's obviously a legitimate problem here, and people are taking it personally.

There were 9 players in the Open field at Walnut. Only 4 of those 9 are legitimate Pro's. Vince, Hunter, Kilby, and Conrad Jr. The rest were AM's playing up. We already know Kilby prefers a better payout. I know Hunter does as well. I'm sure Vince wouldn't have complained about a few extra dollars in his pocket for his win. I don't know where Jr. stands, but I assume it's for better payout. So who were these 4 supposed people to every Ian for a low entry?

Maybe we should go with the Gangloff method... 1000+ $80, 980+ $60, 960+ $40, everyone else $30, and Ian can pay his $60 and be happy. Or maybe its an argument that we should eliminate the middle age division and only offer Open and Grandmasters. Does Jim Conrad really need to be protected from Vince or Kilby?

Gangloff's sliding scale entry based on rating was a brilliant idea, and seemed to work wonderfully. That format would be better for higher par courses though IMO, where there is clear score separation between AM's and Pro's. See Golden Hills, where sometimes the best score of the day is from the AM or Masters division.

The protected divisions have bothered me for a while. It just seems bad for our sport in every way. Conrad certainly doesn't need protection, neither does Jim Myers, or Joe Mela, or Ken Climo. I don't want to rant about Masters too much, but it would be nice if the age was AT LEAST 45, if not 50. There are countless 1000 rated Masters these days, and there are going to be many more. How bout support the sport and play in the Open division where you belong. Guys literally will look at a payout sheet to decide which division they will play in. Total BS.

It was looking like this wasn't going to happen, but I have figured out a way to get the alternate pin positions installed before the Fall Colors Tournament on Nov. 7 & 8. My office work load is currently slow so my boss has authorized me to work on clearing for the new pin positions during my usual work days next week. I have also cancelled my travel plans for Oct. 31 and so I propose that we install the collars that day.

Weather permitting, I plan on being out at the course tomorrow morning to continue clearing. I would welcome some help.

I sincerely hope that this news will brighten someone's day. These alternate positions will make the course even more challenging and hopefully will be a welcome enhancement to the course.

I am very excited about the new pin positions at New Quarter. This will enhance an already awesome course. I too agree to get the sleeves in when the chance to do so comes around. However; I do not like the idea of changing the course right before a tournament. I like to play the course in my head the night before an event. Try to figure out what disc I am going to throw on each hole and come into the tournament with a game plan. Changing the course before the tournament will give the locals a slight edge at the start. With the tournament so close. They will be the only ones to see or play the new positions. I am just throwing this out there lets say for some.... food for thought. I am sure Chris will chime in. So please get the new sleeves in place. I look forward the the enhancements!

Jimmy and all others-

Hopefully all the alternate pins will be in place by Tee Off on Sunday. We won't be using the new pins on Saturday (Rec and Int). Its possible only some of the pins will be used or maybe all, I just don't know yet. I don't see a competetive edge because if all goes to plan the pins won't even be in until Saturday, October 31. They need to cure for a couple of days (Monday? November 2nd). The park also closes during the week on November 1st so access will be limited and I know we won't be moving baskets around until later in the week. I really don't like using holes that haven't been played before during a tourney but they are well laid out and easy to find. For these reasons I doubt anyone will get to play the holes until Sunday at the earliest so you guys could be the first. We will do our best to post the new pin positions for review on the Discussion board in the Affiliate Clubs section. If anyone has any other concerns please let me know and I will try to address them. I promise all of you to make this as fair and fun tournament for all players as I can.

The park will be open on Friday for play for tourney players for free (very cool) just please check in at the office. Please watch the speed limit as you enter the park as the Sheriff will be watching.

Please pre-register if you can.

Thanks!

Jimmy:
Like John said, no competitive advantage as the alt. pin positions won't be played until Tues. Nov. 3 at the earliest (and that's only if someone gets the keys and moves them; I will be out of town Nov. 1-6). Perhaps those of us who have worked on clearing and installation would have some advantage, but that's a small percentage of the field (and you know I'm not competing!) In reality, perhaps the baskets can be moved after the Am rounds are over on Sat. and a casual round can be played. In any event, I will be there Sun. and will personally caddy for you (if you like) and see to it that you and your group know exactly where the baskets are for the alt. pin round. I will also be willing to give early morning tours to any who desire. John mentioned a map to me this afternoon, which is a good idea.

In any event, I know that the tournament staff, of which I am a part, is committed to making sure everyone knows where these new pin positions are located.

And though there is usually no OB or mandatories at NQ, there will be OB on Hole #1 Alt. (the asphalt!) and a mando on Hole #2 Alt.

I Look forward to seeing this year's tourney!

Hi everybody! The Timber Ridge Open is barely a month away. Thanks to Jeff Peters for TDing the TRO this year and Daniel Eubank for running the Golden Ticket series. I'll be running the Battle of the Blue Ridge, which is our region's most prestigious team disc golf event.

This year the TRO and BBR, will be on the same day, November 28th! We will tee off the TRO at 9:00 to get all of this disc golf in one day.

The next day is the Blue Ridge Invitational which will showcase the winners of the Golden Ticket events. Come on out on Sunday and watch some top-class disc golf. The BRI will be two rounds at Falling Creek Park and tee off at 10:00.

Here is a cut-and-paste of the flyer at the bottom of this e-mail.

I have a feeling that the TRO may come close to filling this year. You will likely want to pre-register to play in the first PDGA at the farm in over 15 months!!! Not to mention getting together a team in the morning and trying to qualify for the BBR!

I can't wait, and Timber Ridge will be in top condition!

I've updated PiedmontDGC.org, but keep checking back for updates.

Battle of the Blue Ridge

Fourth annual team disc golf tournament

Timber Ridge, Bedford November 28, 2009

Teams of five players must create a team name, choose a captain, and register before the Timber Ridge Open. $10 per player. Ladies will play from the red tees. Men will play from the yellow tees. Individual Scores from the TRO will constitute the team-total, which will qualify teams for the BBR playoffs. The four teams with the lowest team-totals will make the semi-finals and teams will be seeded accordingly. The semi-finals will tee off immediately after the TRO awards ceremony. The top two teams will be paid out.

Ties for team seeding will be broken by lowest individual score. Each playoff team will be seeded by the individual morning scores of the the five players. Ties for individual seeding will be broken by the Zadereky Rule (reverse alphabetical order). The playoffs will be nine holes of singles play between teams. Team seeded 1 will play Team 4. Team 2 will play Team 3. Like individuals seeds will play against each other in match-play format (hole-by-hole scoring). For example, Team 1s seed 1 will play Team 4s seed 1. Starting holes will be randomly drawn. There will be no ties: if competitors are tied after nine holes then they will have a sudden-death playoff. Semifinal teams winning three or more of their matches will play against each other in the finals. It will be nine holes of match-play again, with ties after nine holes being broken by sudden-death playoff.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden Ticket 2009

The Golden Ticket series is comprised of five PDGA tournaments and culminates at the Blue Ridge Invitational at Falling Creek Park in Bedford on November 29th.

There are five divisions this yearOpen, Masters, Ladies, Advanced, and Intermediate. The winner of each of these divisions at each tournament earns a Golden Ticket invitation to the prestigious BRI. If the winner of the division has already earned a Golden Ticket, then the invitation will be passed down to the second place finisher. Ties will be broken in a sudden death playoff. Players may not decline the invitation and pass it on to the next highest finisher.

Prizes at the BRI will be proportional: The Open division will receive two shares of the prize pool, Ladies, Masters, and Advanced will have one share, while the Intermediate division will receive a half of a share. Two dollars come out of each entry at the five PDGA events. A portion of unclaimed Ace Pots will go to the BRI prize pool.

Coming to play the new course Friday.............LOL

Jimmy - The new collars won't be in until Sat. 98% of the clearing has been completed though, so you'll be able to see what it will be.

I know for sure that some of the new positions will be playable, but there is a lot of debris to be cleaned up before the tournament. The coolest ones, 4, 5, 10, and 18 will certainly be ready.

Chris,

Now that you mention it, we'll plan a December event, and your invited.
We'll change up the format so you won't play the same layout as Fall Colors.

AS A MATTER OF FACT ------ EVERYBODY IS INVITED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aww Shucks!!!!!!! 4 and 10 are birdie holes and are 2 of my favorites! 18???? How much longer will that hole be? 5 I never liked. Shaped like a horseshoe. so a new position will be welcomed there.

Mike
The course is awesome!!!! Whatever you and the club decide to do will only enhance the course more! Looking forward to being the on the 8th.

Thanks Jimmy.

I'm fairly certain that baskets will be in A position for first round, so you can still have those birdies! Hole 5 with the alt. pin is shaped somewhat like a boomerang as opposed to a horseshoe. I haven't measured 18, but my guess is that it is maybe 50 feet longer and more protected than A position.

Just wanted to give you a few reasons to come out and play this week in case you are on the fence.

First of all the course is looking better than ever. There are mowed fairways, new pin positions, new walkways, contests, prizes and lunch provided for all players, there is also discounts for anyone who plays both days. The weather looks good right now and did I say the course looks GREAT!

The new pins aren't too intimidating and a couple are actually shorter. The new fairways are clear and the hard work by the club is shown on nearly every hole. I don't know how to describe it. Is the course harder than say the Sunnyside? Probably not. Are the long pins harder than Loriella long? No way. Is it as beautiful as Hawk Hollow? No. But it has its own beauty maybe like a cute sister.

But it is up to you to decide. The course is awesome on many levels and we at NNDGC would like you to come share the love of the game at our home. I know if you come out and play you won't be disappointed.

Things are coming together quite nicely. The player packs are ready. The course is great and the weather will be as good as can be expected for November. Chris, Happy Birthday to Grams. They are very special people indeed. Hope she is well and happy.

Paypal for the Saturday Tourney will be open until Friday night and till Saturday for the Sunday event. If anyone has any special needs and needs help in general, please let me know. We'll try to help. There are a lot of people calling and hoping to get in for both days and all I can say is get there early to sign up. I doubt we will fill, but I would like to have that problem.

I also want to thank a few people ahead of time for all the hard work they have done. They must not go unnoticed. First of all, Tim Dempsey. This guy has really stepped it up. He did the artwork, mowed the course, ordered discs, pulled trees, built stairs, WOW! Amazing. I don't want you to shake his hand, he's getting a hug. Great job Tim and Thank You Brother. Molly Nealer the boss at the park has been overwhelmingly supportive in all the work at NQ and none of the improvements would be possible without her. Hugs for Molly as well! Mike August has done a fine job of cutting trees and planting posts and working hard to get this course ready. Thanks Mike. Then there are the usual suspects, Otis, Bonday, Adam, Dave, Tony, JP, Jeff Craig and of course the Hammer.

Thanks to their hard work this will be a very special event for all of you. Please come out and enjoy it with us.

Tim Dempsey!!!!!! You are the man. Great job with working on the course and new hole maps!.........As for the rest of the club!!!!!! Awesome job as always. New Quarter was a great place to play!!!!

As far as the new pin positions........ they all seem interesting. 10 I didn't like due to the poke-and-hope effect once you got into the woods. Although I am sure once it gets played in; it will shape up nicely. Good job guys! The new pin layout will be GREAT for tournaments but I feel it might be a little intimadating for the new player who has never played before.

10? That's the best one! Only poke and hope if you are far off the fairway. Like you say though, it will be better once it's played in. I haven't even played the new pins yet. I suspect a round with loppers in hand is in order so that face level branches and such can be eliminated.

Tim Dempsey did an incredible job overall, but especially on the maps and artwork.

Certainly the new pins are meant to attract the pro faction and people like me who don't care how many strokes they take. Beginners should play NN Park.

I think the baskets will be left in the new positions for a while so locals can learn them. We may switch to the 3rd position on 1 & 16 sometime soon as well.

Thanks Jimmy and everybody else for their appreciation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have spent a lot of time at New Quarter and I know what a beautiful place
that it is. It doesn't matter what time of day your there. It's always a great
place to play. I may have spent a lot time mowing but I always make time to play. There are great courses in Virginia and I believe New Quarter makes the cut as one those top courses in the state. I am fortunate to have this course near me.
York County and specifically Molly Nealer deserves credit for allowing our club
to help maintain the course and help make improvements. They have always treated our club and disc golfers very well. If it wasn't for their cooperation, we would have been giving out bug spray in our player's packs.
Thank you to the few that were able to get one of the sponsorship discs. I hope that I can create designs that are worthy of wall hanger status.
The best part of the weekend was being able to cash and accept it.

Anyone know why a tournament would use the 40% pay scale vs the recommended 45%, especially with added cash? Just wandering.

First of all I want to congradulate all the winners at the 12th Annual Fall Colors, there were some serious battles going on in respective divisions and none more so than Open. The difference from 1st to 8th was only six strokes overall. I know some people that may be a little disappointed with the payout but I assure you I met and exceeded the "recommended" standard set by the PDGA sanctioning agreement of 40% minimum. The decision to pay only the top three players was totally my call. If I'd have paid down 4, that would have been half the field and I didn't think that that was the best thing. I took the "4th Place" cash and gave it to the winners instead. Maybe not the most popular route but one I'm OK with. There was no malice intended to any player. The payout was posted before the final round and everyone knew what they had to do. If you look at our payout history, on average we pay larger but not as deep payouts for Open Divisions and deeper and more payout on the AM side. I've tried different scenarios to get more Open players to come out, one day events instead of two, seperating the AM's to another venue, improving the course, etc. and still Open is the smallest division. So this time I increased the payout to the top finishers, maybe that will work.

Regardless, I hope this issue won't keep anyone from coming out. We really do try to make this fun for everyone and I appreciate the support.

The Fall Colors payout was fat at the top I just wish some of the wealth was spread out to the middle of the field it would not have helped me but I think rewarding deep into the field encourages bottom feeders and that's a good thing. OK jump on me now.

BOTTOM FEEDERS!?! Is that the way everyone feels?! Players who enjoy competing and do their best but can not finish in the cash........ Bottom Feeders!?! That is a encouraging way to get players out to events!

The term bottom feeders has been around forever. Would you prefer "mullet" or "added cash"? You control what you are called by your actions. Last year I was added cash. I didn't learn any new skills. I improved my attitude and confidence and pulled my head out of my quantum singularity. Everyone can do that if i can.

Hysell I thought you were coming back from a shoulder injury and that's way you didn't play well the last year or so. Bottom feeders enhance the pro pot as well as the am's $ should also. Look at Duck golf, to me that's the way more events should be.

My excuses are endless. I once used an estimated 42 excuses in 18 holes. But yes, the injury and lack of confidence were related. Inability to perform shots will cause lack of confidence. I had to overcome that to get back into form. It's a work in progress. I should be back fully by 2012.

Bottom feeders are committed players donating to the love of their life, but they're still watching.
Amateurs are enamoured with their dreams of cashing in on their current skillsets. They'll take the bait a few times and never return if the payout seems fishy.

Course events rise to "Supertour" status and fall to unfilled "C" tiers, then pheonix from the ashes... only time will tell...

While this may be perceived as being 'gospel', I question your "allowing" a differentiation between genders and not between ages (or any other subgroup...of which gender just happens to be only one). What's special about gender (as a sub-set) opposed to any other? [Editors note: This surely will endear me with the girlfriend even more!]

Chris,

I feel your pain. And I'm not picking on Jerry, but if the "TD paperwork" has it that way, then...

1. All y'all need to follow it...until
2. But as soon as can be done, change it so it's correct (may take just a WEE bit of time though, no?)

My initial post was just to point out a very small "flaw" that could be better'd. Whether or not anyone chooses to do something about this for the future, I don't know.

I'm just not crazy about situations where people seeing something that walks like a duck and talks like a duck, etc., and yet still think it's OK to name it a badger.
It's a duck!!

didn't feel like looking back on this thread, so I just grabbed a quote from Vince on another site:

"This year the TRO and BBR, will be on the same day, November 28th!

While I don't understand Karl's post in its entirety, he is correct that there is only ONE open division. There is also only ONE open women division. Thus, I have revised my professional classifications from up-thread:

Open
Open Women
Pro Masters
Pro Masters Women
Pro Grandmasters
Pro Grandmasters Women
Pro Senior Grandmasters
Pro Senior Grandmasters Women
etc....

My point of the original post is that some people mistakenly refer to pro masters as "open" masters. Personally, I prefer the professional classifications found at the West Virginia Open:

Open
Old
Really Old
Babes

Wow, that was a FULL day of golf!!!

In the Timber Ridge Open, Dwight Woods won his first PDGA Open tourny. Hunter and I were tied for second. Dee Proffit won Adv Ladies. We had seven ladies competing! Jim Conrad won Masters. Chris French won Advanced. Steven Powers won Intermediate. Mark Arensdorf won Advanced Masters. Scores will hopefully be up tonight.

There were six teams registered for the Battle of the Blue Ridge. Two teams from Richmond and teams from NOVA, Blacksburg, Tennessee and the Home team. Blacksburg beat the 1 seed Home team 3-2 in the semifinals, with Jim Conrad beating Dwight on the second sudden-death playoff hole. "Big Orange" Tennessee beat NOVA. Big Orange beat Blacksburg in the finals 3-2, with Zach Melton parking hole 10 on the first sudden-death playoff hole in the moonlight! Awesome

Thanks to all who attended and all that helped pull these tournaments off!

The Blue Ridge Invitational will tee off this morning at Falling Creek Park in Bedford at 10:00.

The Blue Ridge Invitational was played under beautiful weather today. I won the Open division barely, Jim Conrad won Masters, Dee Proffitt won Ladies, Zach Melton won Advanced, and Keith Gaor won Intermediate. Full results are at PiedmontDGC.org.

Results are up on PDGA.com for the Timber Ridge Open.

Results are up on PiedmontDGC.org for the Battle of the Blue Ridge team championship.

HUGE thanks to those who helped run these tournaments, especially Jeff Peters and Daniel Eubank. More thanks to all those who helped clean up Timber Ridge last week. The whole weekend was a blast! My arm is hanging and my body is rather sore.

Thanks to each and every person who attended!

I would rather have a stiff shot of good Ketucky bourbon (Jack Danials is not one of them.....lol)

Looking at my past performances in the Am division (includes 2 Super Tour wins aka "A" tiers) and many other wins; I have only become a bottom feeder/mullet playing Pro. At lease I moved up!!!! More than I can say for others! Although I have cashed 4 or 5 times playing Pro. It is my Hvnafit mentalley that has held me back............this I am going to change. The name will stay because I know I will still have that fit inside myself but not on the course. I feel now that I can control this.....not give up on a round because of a bad hole or give up on a tournament due to a bad 2 or 3 holes. I WILL cash again in the Pro division and WILL have some Pro wins in the year 2011! This is the year that I can play Grand (Grey) Masters!

Thank you to Mike Trapasso and the Grange for their donation of Grange dollars and donation to the Food Bank! Also thank you to the players who donated discs for the Am payout, and to the Pros that donated winnings back to the Food Bank.

So here are the results:

75 cans of food
$525 money donation!!

Oh yeah and the winners were:
Open: Tom Coffin
Adv: Dave Stowell
Int: Ray Parrish
Chili Cookoff: Tom Coffin

Interesting, last two years the chili cook off winner also won Open - must be something in the beans?

To Virginia Disc Golf Clubs and fellow Virginia Disc Golfers.

The Spotsy Disc Golf Club is raising money to purchase signs for Loriella Park. Here is your opportunity to support us:

Hole sponsorships are being sold at $100 per hole. This means two signs per hole, one for the red tee, one for the white tee. Holes 5 & 15 will either be sold together ($100) or separately ($50 per hole).

Sponsors of the hole will be recognized on the sign as sponsoring that hole. The sponsorship is good for at least a 12 months.

Hole one is already sponsored.

Please contact me if you desire to sponsor a hole. Give me a list of three, in the order of preference, of the hole you want to sponsor. It will be first come, first served. If your first choice is available, you get it, if it is already taken, then you will get your second choice, if that is taken, then your third choice. If all three choices taken I will let you know what hole is available.

My contact info: [email protected]

Or simply reply to this post.

Will work out details for payment of your sponsorship when your hole is selected. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Oh yeah - we are still snowed in here - I've heard the main roads have been cleared, however, my subdivision has not been touched.

After careful and deliberate consideration, the BRAWL at Falling Creek will replace the BRAWL at Big Branch. In other words, on January 9th, we will play at Falling Creek instead of Big Branch.

Please help spread the word to help our internet-challenged friends and others! Seriously!

That means there are basically only six more chances for BRAWL points. Only your top six points totals count as usual, so each tournament is even more important this year!

See everyone on January 2nd as the BRAWL rumbles into Walnut Creek near Charlottesville!

Happy New Year! It feels like I haven't played disc golf in months! I'm getting geeked to play the Nut!

The BRAWL rolls into Walnut Creek Park on Saturday, January 2nd. Tournament course records for Walnut Creek are a 44 from the white tees shot by Wayne Brown, Vince Whorley, and Ben Long on 10/15/05 at Mountain Jam IV. The Blue tee tournament course record is a 52 by Jake Azato at Mountain Jam VI on 10/6/07. Let's all support co-tournament director Dan Hoffman, as he and his crew will have the Nut in top shape!

The BRAWL on January 9th, which was scheduled for Big Branch, will be held at Falling Creek Park in Bedford instead. Please help spread the word.

FarmDiscGolf.net has been updated and the old BRAWL results have been added. Please be patient while I work the bugs out.

Vince

Yes, this is non-PDGA info Chris. Sorry

Here's some more info to get you fired up for the BRAWL at Walnut Creek on Saturday.

I'm proud to say that the Nut is the third leg of the BRAWL this year, and I can't think of a better course to hold that distinguished honor.

This will be the fifth BRAWL at the Nut! Previous Open winners include Adam Vanderslice (II), Rusty Wilhelm (III), Tim Barr (IV), and James Conrad (V). The year Adam won is remembered for a mix of weather: rain, ice, sleet, snow, and wind variably appeared. The tournament was shortened to 27 holes and Adam dominated the field by seven throws, apparently unaffected by the conditions.

This year's forecast is Sunny!

Who will win this year's BRAWL at the Nut? Will a member of the BRDGC ever win one?

Some new things for BRAWL VI are the two MEGA-CTPs! A dollar out of every entry will be put into a cash CTP that all players are eligible for both rounds. Last year the Nut BRAWL had 42 players--that would make a $42 CTP!!! The other CTP will be a huge stack of prizes and discs graciously donated by players. (COUGHoffmanCOUGH). This CTP will also be for all players both rounds. The one at Randolph Park was four or five discs I think. We don't have seven crappy CTPs, we prefer two MEGA-CTPs!

This year the points race will be tighter than ever. Since the second tournament was cancelled, each remaining tournament is even more critical. A darkhorse has never had a better chance to win the BRAWL than this year!

The four Open BRAWL finalists will be playing for big prizes as usual. The Amateur BRAWL champion will win a Innova Discatcher Sport. Second, third, and fourth place Ams will get gift certificates to Play-It-Again Sports. The Lady champion will get a gift card to Play-It-Again also. All the champions will get their name on the BRAWL trophy perpetual plaque.

Thanks to Innova and Play-It-Again Sports for sponsoring the BRAWL again this year. They provide the most premium plastic and great prizes. Check out Play-It-Again in Forest--they have a huge selection of new and used discs!

See y'all at Walnut Creek Saturday!

3/6 loriella ams
3/7 loriella pros

there are some things to be worked out in april still.

Jimmy - Since I will be Team Spotsy's Captain this year (by default more than anything else), I will respond for Bob.

Spotsy DGC is still discussing how Team Spotsy will be formed. At our December club meeting we made recommendations and sent that info out to our 2009 club members. We plan to discuss again at our January meeting for final determination. Past years we had a tryout, this year's recommendation is to not have a tryout. Will know more after next week's meeting.

Can I attend the meeting along with club dues to become a member? How much are the dues now? I plan to play most of my golf this year in the Spotsy area with the exception of Richmond leagues.

Luck or fortuity is a belief in good or bad fortune in life caused by accident or chance which happens beyond a person's control.

It seems to me that had you gone to the meetings you would have had some control. It's just like a bad shot. It's not bad luck, you had the opportunity to throw it properly.

Well i've been playing a lot of doubles lately and i've noticed that my partners will often mention that they are having bad luck. How is it that I can throw a better shot after they throw a bad one? It's obviously not luck influencing it. Luck plays a big part in games of chance, not games of skill. That is all.

you only say that because you're one of the luckiest players ever (after DM of course) :)

what do you call a drive that misses the fairway, cuts through every tree in the woods and lands beside the basket? i call it a bad throw that got lucky. i see it ALL the time. luck plays a huge part in disc golf, i don't care what anybody says. i can't count the number of times i have seen bad shots go WAY good because of dumb luck. no skill involved. youve played rounds where you get beat by someone who gets one of these lucky shots at JUST the right time. skill will definately get you there, but anyone who wins a tourney gets lucky somewhere, and i dont think that can be denied.
