BamBam I can't believe I'm siding with you.... ;)
It's easy to be ahead in the above numbers when that's all you do (of course they're not percentages, so not really valid comparisons)... so let's compare BamBam vs Flipperman's:
weekends with family
money spent on tourney entry fees
money spent on all the things surrounding tourneys
height (ok Bam you lose that one) :D

Jun 14 2005, 02:23 PM
Thanks, BBD.... there's just not a lot to add to that observation of yours. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
OH, let's not forget one other thing Pat excels at better than I... being a superior pain in the backside on countless threads on this board.
I'm only a pain on THIS thread. :D:D:D:D

Jun 14 2005, 02:29 PM

btw, my tourney weekends ARE spent with my family. they travel with me, and enjoy the parks, scenery, views, etc.
btw2, i spend more at Home Depot when i stay at home for the weekend
btw3, i'll get busy converting some stats to percentages... but i'm warning you ahead of time... its gonna be ugly :o
btw4, this is the smack talk thread, isnt it? bambam knows (i hope) i am messing with him. if i didnt like him or think he was a good guy i wouldnt bother.

Just started looking through tourney results and found something I like about OMB in Texas.
Over the last 5 years, and 70+ sanctioned events, I have come in second in OMB 11 times. Of those 11 times only one player has finished ahead of me twice and one of those was in doubles play. This is a great division, and no one dominates. It is always a toss-up at the start who is going to have a hot round and have a chance at a victory. I will admit there are some players you expect to see in the top 5, but they are not always the ones that win.

what M did you get a 1st or 2nd at, gary?
Marshall Ray, i'll look into it, but '93-'00 is hard to get. now, this is not defnititive, but i'm pretty sure it would look something like this:
1993: you sucked 100%
1994: you sucked 96%
1995: you sucked 82% (way to step up!)
1996: you sucked 74%
1997: you sucked 69%
1998: you sucked 48% (EXCELLENT WORK!!!)
1999: you sucked 51%
2000: you sucked 54%
i'll get the rest later :D

what other, more challenging stats can flipperboy come up with? how bout:
how many smileys per post has Frank averaged since 11/03 (when the board was rebuilt)? How many for BamBam?
Given x as the number of threads Sandalman has posted on, what percentage of x have received whiny-boy posts? What percentage have received braggardly posts?
What percentage of STD events have BamBam and Sandalman each participated in? (close to 0 for both :D)
Of all STD events, what percentage have been "protested" or "boycotted" by Pinkie?
I want this on my desk by COB tomorrow ;)

Shoot when sandman, duke and I got our pdga #s there were no tiers. I wouldn't have gotten my # if they hadn't required it in '95 or'96. In 94 I got second at Waco. It was only a 9-hole course that they had just gotten the Baskets set the thursday before the tourney. The back 9 were portables. I got 3rd and 4th at Waterloo Park tournies Park Pete and Waterloo that year and moved up from Novice that year. Aww those were the days of going to the local courses and not having to wait behind a herd of kids.

I use to play every Waco tournament because my sister lived in Waco. Those were some great times.

Jimmy Porter, lefty vs. righty
Hole 1 - 0
Hole 2 - 0
Hole 3 - 0 (this could be righty, but lefty with an annie is at no disadvantage)
Hole 4 - 0
Hole 5 - +1 righty
Hole 6 - 0
Hole 7 - 0
Hole 8 - 0
Hole 9 - 0
Hole 10 - 0
Hole 11 - 0
Hole 12 - 0
Hole 13 - +.5 righty
Hole 14 - 0 (altho i feel this can ever so slighty favor a righty, the narrowness close to the pin makes it easier to call it even)
Hole 15 - 0
Hole 16 - 0
Hole 17 - +.5 lefty
Hole 18 - +.5 lefty
OVERALL: 0.5 righty. Jimmy Porter is an incredibly balanced course. absolutely equal.
you could make a case for a few of these holes going .5 one side or the other, but they are so short that really simple annie lines are there. and there are as many Ls as Rs in this category, so its a push.

Jun 16 2005, 12:42 AM
14 - lefty straight but extreme trouble if ANY hyzer on last 2/3's of flight, or if you're even 10' to the right. righties can s-ball it a little more easily than lefties. but righties can also get into trouble if they skip left. 14 is a testy little hole. if you draw out all the possible lines for both righty and lefty, then assign a degree of difficulty to each line, i think you'll see it might as well be a toss-up. dont forget to account for the troublethat happens if you miss the perfect line!
now, are you playing tom or what???

BS on Porter
#1 .25 lefty - with the brush that the rail road cut, the hole now favors lefties
#2 .25 righty - Only the tree stop this from being =
#3 .5 Righty - my favorate shot is actually over the trees
#4 .75 lefty - this is a turnover shot for me everytime.
#5 1 righty - no brainer
#6 .75 righty - very small lefty shot
#7 .25 righty - larger gaps on the right
#8 .5 lefty - there is a good lefty skip shot
#9 .5 Lefty - There really is not a hyzer shot
#10 .75 righty - The lefty shot puts you much more over the pond with trees guarding the hole.
#11 .75 Righty - There is a small straight shot for lefties
#12 0 - with the basket right in the middle this is a straight shot from the tee pad
#13 .25 righty - the big hyzer over the top is much better than the lefty shot through the trees.
#14 .25 lefty = the leftly has a better chance of the bird
#15 0 - birdy both left and right
#16 .25 Righty - the second shot favors a righty
#17 .5 Lefty = There is a tough shot over the top.
#18 .75 lefty - for the locals it is an automatic bird from the right. But for non local players, this is a pure lefty hole.
I was not all that far off, I figured 1.5 favor righty. This hole makes a right handed player throw the turnover on more than one hole.

#1 .25 lefty - with the brush that the rail road cut, the hole now favors lefties
<font color="purple"> if a righty cannot execute a straight shot for less than 300', they need some serious practice. this hole play is a push </font>
#2 .25 righty - Only the tree stop this from being =
<font color="purple"> if a lefty is worried about that one lonely tree he needs to get a life. the brnaches are high enough they are not a factor. this hole is a push. </font>
#3 .5 Righty - my favorate shot is actually over the trees
<font color="purple"> again, the righty has a long (400') hyzer. unless you are one of the few with a 400' honking hyzer, this hole is easier to reach for a lefty! calling this a righty hole is a perfect example of not enough thinking when doing a LvR analysis. </font>
#4 .75 lefty - this is a turnover shot for me everytime.
<font color="purple"> less than 250', a righty throws a gentle annie. if that shot is not in your bag, you are in trouble. the ease of the annie makes this a push. </font>
#5 1 righty - no brainer
<font color="purple"> PG got the no brainer right at least. go figure :D</font>
#6 .75 righty - very small lefty shot
<font color="purple"> what is it, 200'? so what if the righty can swing it wider... if righty doesnt go wide enough he's in the creek. the lefty, who should absolutely be able to hit that hole at less than 200', is at least skipping towards grass. the difficulty difference is non-existant </font>
#7 .25 righty - larger gaps on the right
<font color="purple"> yes, there are a few more trees blocking the left route. but not nearly enough to make it a righty favorable hole. </font>
#8 .5 lefty - there is a good lefty skip shot
<font color="purple"> be serious. that skip shot is just as small a hole as the straight shot. </font>
#9 .5 Lefty - There really is not a hyzer shot
<font color="purple"> huh??? the lefty has an open hyzer. righty doesnt, but geez, he's got a straight line to the basket, which is less than 300'! what do you want? a fifty foot hole??? </font>
#10 .75 righty - The lefty shot puts you much more over the pond with trees guarding the hole.
<font color="purple"> this is one i could go along with you on. but, it is a relatively short hole, and lots of room for a lefty annie. certainly not .75. maybe .5R at most, if anything. a lefty should not consider this a righty hole at all. it might pose a chal;lenge to a lefty, but not enough to merit serious complaints. </font>
#11 .75 Righty - There is a small straight shot for lefties
<font color="purple"> a lefty complaining about having to make a 150' annie is a total wuss cvissy mama's boy. besides, there's a tomahawk that drops right on the pin. </font>
#12 0 - with the basket right in the middle this is a straight shot from the tee pad
<font color="purple"> now i know you are not paying attention. i call this one even also.. but you have been assigning points for extremely slight advantages... if you were consistant you'd recognize that the righty has a nice slow hyzer fade, while the lefty needs to annie ever so slightly. still a push in my book. </font>
#13 .25 righty - the big hyzer over the top is much better than the lefty shot through the trees.
<font color="purple"> the lefty shot is not through the trees. its a high turnover that crashes the tops. i might agree it is marginally a righty hole, but the shortness really makes it a push. </font>
#14 .25 lefty = the leftly has a better chance of the bird
<font color="purple"> this hole is one of the most incorrectly analyzed holes in disc golf. i dare you to draw out all of the possible shot lines on a graph paper, lefty and righty, and support the theory that this is anything but a very tricky hole for both sides.</font>
#15 0 - birdy both left and right
<font color="purple"> i guess it takes a wide open 300' hole with the same number of trees on both sides for PG to get one correct! :D</font>
#16 .25 Righty - the second shot favors a righty
<font color="purple"> WRONG again. there are as many lines thru the guard trees for lefty as righty. also, a roller stays more in the center of the fairway for a lefty. </font>
#17 .5 Lefty = There is a tough shot over the top.
<font color="purple"> probably true </font>
#18 .75 lefty - for the locals it is an automatic bird from the right. But for non local players, this is a pure lefty hole.
<font color="purple"> that doesnt make it a lefty hole. the line is there for righties. lefty cant help it if they cant/dont see it. i'd give this one a .5L, though, just for the pure (bigger than it looks) lefty hyzer. </font>
PG, the first key to LvR analysis is not to be too detailed. second key is to consider all shots a decent player should have. a 200' gentle annie glide should be as given for a decent player. therefore holes like #11 are pushes. a 400' hole with stuiff on the left may look like a R hole, but is arguably more reachable with an s-ball... making it a push. and so on...

As far as LvR analysis, sandalman you aren't thinking very hard with yours, either. Hole 1, for example *does* favor lefty. Just b/c there is an easy line for a righty advanced player doesn't mean that it is necessarily neutral. it's far easier to just throw a big hyzer than to nail a straight (slight turnover) shot. You can't take for granted the player's skill in an analysis like this. If we assume top-pro skill, then nearly every course is neutral. You have to think of it more like: "does it take more skill for a lefty or a righty." Only then you can really judge the hole. Obviously the easiest shot in the book is the basic BH hyzer, so if the hole favors that shot for either group, the points go that way. I do, however agree that it probably does work out to a fairly neutral course. Since I'm at work and bored... I'll rate the course LvR using -1 as a full lefty advantage, and +1 as a full righty advantage.
#1 -0.5
lefty hyzer is by far the easiest route, still not difficult for a righty
#2 0
long, straight shot. advantage really depends on the wind conditions
#3 +0.5
I agree w/ PG. the righty s-bomb is the easiest route to the hole. the easiest 3 is most certainly the righty hyzer route. Since Flipperboy says lefty is easy too... I'll go .5
#4 -1
shorter version of hole 1. big lefty hyzer. any lefty newbie could birdie this hole fairly easily
#5 +1
arguably the toughest lefty birdie on the course.
#6 +0.5
easier for a righty skip, short enough to be almost neutral anyway.
#7 +0.5
easier line for the righties
#8 0
tunnel or hyzer for either group
#9 -1
once more, a lefty hyzer shot.
#10 +0.5
safer routes for righties, easy 3 for either. easier to birdie for righties
#11 +0.5
righty hyzer skip was how steve and I both aced it a few weeks ago. it's not a full 1 since the thumber route is popular and there for both groups
#12 0
used to slighty favor righties but PG moved it (PG we gotta talk about this. #12 could be an awesome hole with the basket out farther to the R and deeper. Come out today and I'll show ya where I mean :D)
#13 +0.5
righty spike hyzer is easiest route, plenty of other routes for those more creative.
#14 0
no real advantage either way. Both groups have tons of risk when shooting for birdie and very little risk when laying up.
#15 0
easy hyzer for either group.
#16 0
long bomb, wide open...
#17 -0.5
lefty hyzer route is a little more accessible
#18 -0.5
lefty hyzer is way more accessible, but there are good righty hyzer routes too
This assessment results in an overall +0.5 score.
sandalman
Jun 16 2005, 01:20 PM
well, we both say .5R, just different methods for arriving at it.
#3 - if the righty annie is sweet, why is the lefty annie more difficult? by taking the righty annie instead of the hyzer, you've (correctly) figured out that the annie will get ya there more easily than the hyzer.
#4 the lefty hyzer still must negotiate a tree jail - and it is thicker than the jail you face when going staight at it. there is NO way #4 is as difficult for a righty as #5 is for a lefty.
#6, #7 - its an insult to lefties to say these are advantages righty. average length of about 240'.
#9 - i MIGHT be able to give you a -.5 on this hole, but thats a bit lame. all a righty has to do is go straight for 240'. certainly not a -1
#10 if #9 is a -1 with no OB at all, then #10 would have to be a +3! calling 9 a -1 and 10 a +.5 is silly.
#14 - finally someone who understand what i've been sayin all along! BBD gets it! i really dont understand why this hole is so difficult for people to call a push.
the rest - you are pretty much right on. you may give out some points more easily than me, but Porter has enough of a balance that it zeroes out, and we get the same overall result.
i think BBD has some good talent at this LvR stuff!
baldguy
Jun 16 2005, 01:29 PM
the reason I say #3 favors R is that for a rec player or anyone else that can't throw 400 ft (even with an S-bomb), a 3 is easier for a righty. just 2 hyzer shots and you're putting. no trees to deal with, nothin. The main difference b/t our approaches is that I'm assuming little-to-no skill for a baseline, and working up from there, while you're assuming that the player at least has intermediate-level skill. Saying that "all they have to do is throw straight for 240'" is a little presumptuous. I'd say that on average, more people can throw a hyzer 240' and get close to their target than can do the same thing for a straight shot.
Maybe the point is that no matter how you look at it, the course is neutral :D

Jun 16 2005, 01:39 PM
so, since there are lefty *and* righty holes... does this mean that team <font color="pink">pink thong</font> should have an advantage? So if you get beat, that means you REALLY suck? :D

whats the <font color="pink"> thong </font> stuff? sandals are not underwear. besides, i'm partial to commando style.
the answer to your questions is: porter is short, relatively easy course. in doubles it should push no matter what the team's makeup. in essense that means that if we are on the same team and if we get beat, then yes, we would have truly sucked. especially if we got beat by a team with BBD on it.

i never said anything about flipping or not flipping. except when all you loverboyz were pms'ing last week and i suggested ya knock it off, flip for partners, and track overall results instead of omb v ygb.
i sure dont blame the ygbs for being skeered of a pinkie/sandalman team. they should be!
but i dont care if we flip either. in fact, in some ways that would be preferred. this is only my second std event, so i'm just going along with whatever.

Jun 16 2005, 04:13 PM
I like flipping unless a doubles tournament is coming up. Since we only have about three of those a year, it isn't that often.
I would also like to try the paske partners method of trading of partners halfway through the round. It's a little more trouble to keep stats, but not really very difficult.
baldguy
Jun 16 2005, 04:24 PM
I think keeping stats at this point is a bad idea. Too many rules and too many people who disagree with them. Let's just play :)
i sure dont blame the ygbs for being skeered of a pinkie/sandalman team. they should be!
Yeah right, the only thing we will be scared of is how much whining you two are going to be doing.
And after the posts I've seen from you today :confused:, I am worried about your attire. New Rule, OMB's must be fully clothed to play with YGB's. No unnecessary nudity or butt slapping!!! LOL  :D

somehow i knew you would find a way to say this... nice edit of my post ;)
whats the <font color="pink"> thong </font> stuff? sandals are not underwear. besides, i'm partial to commando style.
See (copied from dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=thong)):
thong (thng, thng) n.
1. A narrow strip, as of leather, used for binding or lashing.
2. A whip of plaited leather or cord.
3. A sandal held on the foot by a strip that fits between the first and second toes and is connected to a strap usually passing over the top or around the sides of the foot.
4. A garment for the lower body that exposes the buttocks, consisting of a narrow strip of fabric that passes between the thighs supported by a waistband.
so... by definition #3, a "thong" is a type of sandal. You wear sandals. Frank is deathly afraid of pink string. A string bikini is comprised in part of a garment also called a "thong." Team <font color="pink">Pink Thong</font> is the logical combination of these ideas. Learn to deal with it. :D
the answer to your questions is: porter is short, relatively easy course. in doubles it should push no matter what the team's makeup. in essense that means that if we are on the same team and if we get beat, then yes, we would have truly sucked. especially if we got beat by a team with BBD on it.

Jun 16 2005, 04:56 PM
do you have a proposed scoring method? I think flipperboy or someone (all you OMBs look alike) mentioned something along the lines of a weighted point system. Here's my take: Teams are flipped for, top 50% get points based on the number of teams beat. one point given for showing up (but not placing), and one extra point given to the victorious team. At the end of Season 3, the point leader determines the winner. Points are carried solely on a per-age-group basis. For instance:
Game 1 (hypothetical. for you OMBs, that means "not real, only for conversational purposes")
#1 Parker / Dann (the way it should be :D) 6 pts
#2 Murphy / Krell 4pts
#3 Dorsett / Watts 3 pts
#4 Tabor / Jones 1 pts
#5 Flipperboy / Krappl 1 pts
#6 some OMB / Some YGB (I ran out of names off the top of my head) 1 pts
net result: YGB 17pts, OMB 15 pts.
This method keeps either group from gaining too much advantage with a stacked field, but still rewards those who show up. Teams can be flipped for without detriment to the OMB/YGB competition, and another factor is added for mixed teams since points are shared. It does, however, make it difficult to swap partners mid-round. I'm not a big fan of that anyway unless it's a pro/am or mixed doubles format.
thoughts? questions? comments? stupid remarks?
sandalman
Jun 16 2005, 05:02 PM
gary, that would imply this week would be traditional omb/ygb competition.
baldguy
Jun 16 2005, 05:04 PM
here's another example of an unbalanced event:
#1 OMB/YGB 4pts
#2 YGB/YGB 2pts
#3 OMB/YGB 1pts
#4 YGB/YGB 1pts
net result: OMB 5pts, YGB 11pts.
or, same people, different teams and placing:
#1 OMB/OMB 4pts
#2 YGB/YGB 2pts
#3 YGB/YGB 1pts
#4 YGB/YGB 1pts
net result: OMB 8pts, YGB 8pts.
As with any 2-sided competition, the side with more numbers has the advantage, but even in a 25%/75% split, a tie is stil possible.
sandalman
Jun 16 2005, 05:07 PM
bbd, so you had to go the third definition for it to make sense? ok, i can live with that. after all, you need to go to your third putt to complete the hole. life is so balanced, its hard to argue against a creator of higher intelligence :D
as far as the scoring thingie goes, if its flipping plus points system as described, that would work, but it wouldnt make sense to keep it omb/ygb. it would be better just as man on man. (i am sure watts will prefer that approach anyway! :D)

can we just throw some fargin plastic :o

Jun 16 2005, 05:09 PM
I'd say 5,4,3,2 then 1's regardless of the turnout.
If there are only three teams, at least they all made the effort to show up and should be rewarded.
With any flipping or swapping system, points should be kept on an individual basis.
sandalman
Jun 16 2005, 05:11 PM
ok, if you insist on making it omb/ygb then why not only award points to the top n players from each "division" where n = the number of omb or ygb players, whichever is smaller.
but i see one problem. if one division is sufficiently ahead after several weeks, they could deliberately screw up if they got a partner from the other division, making it impossible for the other side to catch up.
i think you either have to make it individual competition, or always pair up within divisions. could you flip within divisions? that way jones wouldnt have to live in perpetual fear of a <font color="pink"> pink thong </font> dynasty.
baldguy
Jun 16 2005, 05:13 PM
i think that system could preserve the OMB/YGB competition. The points are rewarded to the age group, not the individual. I think it would also promote more participation to boost numbers :) It also has the potential to eliminate and discrepancies about who won what. You show up, your team gets points. You play well, your team gets more points. Pretty simple.
As for 3 explanations... it's not my fault you can't grasp a concept the first time

I think Pat has a valid point. There has to be a limit on the number of players that can gather points for their team and it has to be limited by the team with the lower number of players. So if there are 8 YGBs and 6 OMBs, only the top finishing 6 YGBs get points.
sandalman
Jun 16 2005, 05:19 PM
i know it would not be obvious with BBD as the partner, because his completely talentless play is virtually indistinguishable from deliberate tanking... but with anyone else (possible exception of twatts) is could happen!

First of all, death to swapping. Watts might be disappointed, but I'm just not into that sort of thing. Plus it skews all the numbers and results.
I think 5,4,3,2,1,1,1,1 (ad infinitum) is fine, except when we have an unusually large turnout or an unusually small one. If we had 10 teams, it's a 40% payout, with 2 teams, it's 100%. I think we should keep it at 50% (rounded up), with a minimum number of points for payout. Say, 3 pts minimum. If only two teams show up, one team is playing for 3 pts, the other for 1. Three teams would be:
#1 3pts
#2 1pts
#3 1pts

Because I have fun when trying new approaches to familiar situations. I don't really enjoy playing the same courses the same ways over and over. Anything that takes you away from the normal routine throws is entertaining.

-11 Tabor/Parker
-10 Team T-n-A
-9 Krell/Dann
-9 Team Pink Mariposa
-8 Sandals played with himself
-6 BamBam/Kevin (I think)
Some pretty decent scores. It was nice to have the deciding factor be a 2 on a 485ft hole :) Everyone showed Frank the love. We just hope he can handle it :D

Actually, BBD, that was my second STD this year... first one was GB way back in week 2 or 3.
You remember, the one where you showed up late, and we were just finishing hole 2 when you got there? :D
I enjoyed getting out with the STD group again, even though I left part of my game at home. It's good Kevin was putting well, because I think I hit 2, maybe 3 putts the whole round.

Man, you guys suck! You made me read 182 posts for the last 3+ days!!! :D
Yes, I officially became a daddy @ 2:22 pm on June 14. As I told several people last week, we would have a Flag Day baby (no tWatts, that's not phag day). If you didn't know, my wife's maiden name is White and her favorite color is blue. Do I really need to spell out the <font color="red"> Redd </font> part? She is a good little girl who hardly ever cries! We came home yesterday afternoon, and she just sleeps, poops, and eats. :D What a life!! Here is the scoop that some might be insterested in:
Alexandra Amile Reddoch
June 14, 2005 2:22 pm
5 lbs 15.8 oz (rounded up to 6 lbs - I thought Flip-flop and BBD might like that technical stuff)
19 inches long
Wish us luck that she will continue to be a non-crier! :) BTW, Mommy is doing great. Labor was so easy for her. She wasn't very far along, so I went to grab a quick lunch with my brother. I did have permission from Mommy and the nurse to eat! :D I come back less than 30 minutes later, my wife says, "It's go time!" (Mandelbaum from Seinfeld :D)
Sorry, got interrupted having to watch someone poop some more. :D Promise me you won't make me read another 182 posts!!! :)

yes, they suck at losing. they dont have much experience with that. they could learn a thing or two about losing from the ygbs. cuz the ygbs excel at losing. the ygbs suck also, but they suck at winning. given this difference it is clear that ygbs win at sucking.
