Waller Park

This is a destination MUST PLAY. I had the pleasure of playing a bunch of great courses in CA this past October--LaMirada, Long Beach, Sylmar, Coyote Point at Lake Casitas, Bakersfield 36 at Hart Park, Redwood Curtain in Arcata... but Waller Park was my favorite. Diversity: manicured grass with HUGE beautiful trees, nasty tight woods, long open holes with on-shore wind to contend with... a bit of everything. huge park, well loved and used. I was there on a sunday and the locals had the barbqs going driving me nuts with the aromas of the carne cooking. First nine are straightforward layout. 10th through 14th are in tight young trees, and I thought the trickiest to navigate. The 10th tee is a good 75 yards EAST, up- and across- the paved road, (well to the left of the corner where the 9th basket is) beyond a sort if developed picnic area. If you can, try to follow someone through holes 10 through 14. Then it starts to get 'logical' flow again. My words are not doing it justice. 27 diverse holes, in a beauitiful part of california. This course has everything. 27 holes with a wide variety of shots and terrain. The whole front 9 are on grass fairways, the middle and back 9 are a mix of manicured grass and sandy dune fairways. The whole course is covered in HUGE, mature trees and has many interesting features that make it unique and fun. The sandy parts can take it out of you, so if you plan on tackeling all 27, be prepared for a full day. There is water and bathrooms throughout the park and snack vendors. Weekends are busy and I have run into the occational soccer practice, but most are aware of the play going on and will move for you if asked.
