One of the most difficult courses I've ever played, only pared a couple times. Two 690ft par 5's, a 640ft par 4 on 18, a 490ft par 3 on 9. As much as it is long it is technical; a spotter or a very good sense of distance and spacial awareness are necessary, you do not want to play this solo. The map signage does a good enough job of helping you find your basket but the maps look like they were made in MSpaint and not all that accurate, but it gives you a general idea of where your throwing. It's so damn far most the time you wont know where your throwing till you make it over a ridge or around a mess of trees and down a hill. They have done a great job of clearing out bad brush, looks like it had a poison oak problem but they seem to have got a handle on it. The Tee Boxes are mostly dirt, I think 2 were rubber pads, and one was a carved out old water tower with seating in it (don't worry you wont be climbing any ladders) camp sites directly past the basket on that hole. Looks like 20 or so camp sites and the course is the main attraction because the reservoir is essentially an over sized duck pond. It's a 20 hole course right now but i would advise skipping 17, you aren't missing out on anything but some mud on your shoes, an unnecessary walk, and a good chance of getting lost (even with a basic map from the cafe it was one of only two holes we got lost at). It lost half a chain rating because the par is set a little too difficult compared to the standard course distance standards for par, and the other half chain is for the $6 for the day pass parking fee, the drive out there was long enough. I'd take off another for the mediocre signage, but at least they have something, and it does a good enough job. It's a long round, bring drinks, snacks, or a full on picnic, seating is common and there are also park benches and bathrooms near hole 11 and 13.
This course is a bit of a drive from placerville, but worth it. I'm a beginner and although the course is long (20 holes) and has challenging terrain, it is fun and a wonderful walk through some beautiful scenery. We were the only people on the course, which was nice because I didn't feel rushed and got in some good practice. It would be a great course for taking a break half way through for lunch at the picnic/campground area and making a day trip of it.
Some courses are long, some courses are technical, this course is definatly long and technical. This course is awesome, especially after playing it a time or two. Once they refine the teepads and add some next hole signs or arrows, this will a be 5/5
This course is breathtaking and will also test your best golf skills. Its pros are that it is very long, technical and has extreme elevation changes. It is one of a few courses in California that has true Par 4s and 5s. The only reason this course is only a 4/5 and not a 5 is because of the few cons it still has. The tee pads need some refinement, the course also needs better signage, and there are also some landscaping issues that need to be addressed to make it a Championship level course. I believe it will be at the level of a 5 rated course in a few more years...

Finnon is as premier as it gets. This course is a jewel in the hills that not a lot of folks have had the joy to play! Course clearing happening now for April tournament. This course has 4s and 5s. Would love to see the pros play here. That would separate the men from the boys. :) Hangtown DGC Rocks!
