It's Raining Birdies

Posted on May 6th 2013

The 4th stop on the National Tour Elite Series came to an end today as the final putts hit the chains at the Hall of Fame Classic in Appling, GA. Rain, rain, and more rain pummeled the 3 courses at the International Disc Golf Center, not to mention the hundreds of competitors, for most of round 1, all of rounds 2 and 3, and the first half of the final round. If it wasn't sprinkling, it was pouring. There really was no in between.

Blame It On The Rain

Posted on May 4th 2013

All eyes were on the Doppler for most of the morning while preparing for day 2 of the Hall of Fame Classic here at the International Disc Golf Center. It wasn't a question of whether or not it was going to rain, it was when and how much. The first round started at 9:00AM (EST) with a field full of players carrying umbrellas, extra towels, dry socks, and a "maybe we'll get lucky and the rain will miss us" attitude. That optimism would only last a couple of hours, and it would never return.

Daisy Chains Women's Tournament

The second and now annual Daisy Chains wrapped up on April 21st in Watsonville, CA at the beautiful Pinto Lake. After their impressive inaugural year, Christine Hernlund and the Daisy Chains staff had plenty of hype to live up to. Last year Daisy Chains world-premiere was the same weekend as the Women’s Global Event, so this year they were able to break out of the form and highlight other events within the tournament.

A popular question in the disc golf world right now is “What does it takes to run a women’s only tournament?” Who better to answer that question than Ed Coffey, Tournament Director for the Texas Women’s Championship?  The 2010 TWC, with 98 participants, held the record for most female disc golfers at one event (record based on PDGA sanctioned events) until The Chick Flick in North Plains, Oregon broke the record in 2012 with 102 participants.

The Comeback Cup

After 3 days of watching the best players in the world at the Steady Ed Memorial Masters Cup, I can tell you with confidence that DeLaveaga is truly one of the most challenging and brutal courses in the world, both mentally and physically. At the same time, it’s also one of the most awe-inspiring. Everything about DeLa  is so close to aesthetically perfect that it could and should be considered a work of art.

Day 2 at The Steady Ed Memorial Masters Cup was yet another gorgeous day with perfect weather. When the first cards of the day were teeing off it was brisk and foggy but by 9AM everything was back to the normal Nor Cal climate. The wind was again a non-factor today and one would expect scores to improve compared to round 1. Despite all odds, for the most part, they didn’t.
