2025 PDGA Champions Cup - Day 1 Recap

Friday, May 2, 2025 - 01:58

Silva Saarinen made her West Coast debut on Thursday.

Paul McBeth returned home.

Both had warm welcomes to kick off the 2025 PDGA Champions Cup by OTB and MVP Disc Sports.

Saarinen was the only player in the FPO field to go bogey-free at Swenson Park on Thursday in her first competitive action in California. Her 10-under, 1036-rated round — the highest of her career — was a well-round effort. The Finn led the field in Circle 2 in Regulation to go with 347-feet of made putts to open a one-stroke lead.

Hanna Huynh set the early pace with a 9-under round, leading the field in Circle 1 in Regulation at 67% in her highest-rated round of her career.

The two have an early separation after the first of the four-round PDGA Major, the first pro Major of 2025 and the first mixed pro Major in California since 2011.

Paige Pierce and Kristin Lätt round out the lead card at 5-under.

Even after a bogey to open his round, McBeth had a good feeling of how he was throwing the disc.

After that blemish, he just kept collecting birdies and cashing putts all over Swenson Park.

McBeth followed the bogey with five-straight birdies and didn't stop, racking up 432 feet of total putts, including a stellar 6-of-9 mark from Circle 2, to open a three-stroke lead with a 1097-rated 14-under par round. He had four-straight birdies near the turn and strung together six-straight, including back-to-back 60-foot-plus hits, to finish his round.

Fellow Californian Andrew Miranda is in solo second place at 11-under, one shot ahead of Jesse Niemenen, who set the early pace with a 10-under round. Adam Hammes rounds out the lead card at 9-under, tied with Andrew Marwede, who will lead the chase card.
