DiscGolfer Magazine’s long run comes to an end

Thursday, September 25, 2025 - 13:23

Following delivery of the Fall 2025 issue of DiscGolfer Magazine, the PDGA will discontinue production of the publication. This decision comes as the PDGA concludes its analysis of the magazine’s viability as a product.

During the 2025 membership year, in an effort to maintain standard membership prices, the PDGA discontinued the automatic fulfillment of DiscGolfer Magazine to all active members in North America. Instead, as members joined or renewed their membership, they had the option to purchase DiscGolfer Magazine for $10. The intention behind this decision was to objectively measure the market demand for the magazine. Even with the $10 fee, the magazine continued to operate at a loss, losing over $160,000 for the PDGA during 2025.

Ultimately, the PDGA has a fiduciary responsibility to its members, which means carefully investing dollars in projects that support the organization’s mission while providing the best possible service to its members.

“It’s the end of an era. We had a spectacular 17-year run thanks in large part to Art Director Kent Johnson,” said longtime editor Joe Feidt. “I want to acknowledge what KJ created. His totally unique, ridiculously fun style exploded from every page. Every issue is a work of art in itself.

DiscGolfer’s first editor was Rick Rothstein. He collaborated with Johnson for many years before DiscGolfer launched. “Rick and I both agree KJ was the heart and soul of the magazine,” said Feidt. “He made writers and editors like us look very, very good.” Randy Signor took over as editor from 2011 to 2019 following Rick Rothstein's tenure.

Feidt would like to acknowledge the many writers, editors and photographers who provided uplifting, timely, practical and entertaining content over the historic 67-issue run that began in 2009. “They provided the grist for KJ’s art mill,” he said. Feidt’s editorial staff is currently writing feature articles to run on the website starting in November.

I'm a little sad, but it's understandable. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I've really enjoyed it over the years, and want to thank everyone involved for making it as good as it was.

I’m truly sad to hear the magazine won’t continue. As someone who’s been playing disc golf for less than ten years, I found so much value in the insights, tips, and stories it shared. It helped me improve my game, but more importantly, it made me feel connected to the larger disc golf community.
I understand times change and technology takes the lead, but for those of us who didn’t grow up with it, there’s something special about flipping through pages, rereading articles, and holding the history of the sport in our hands.

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to put the magazine together and keep it running. It will be missed, but it will always remain a meaningful part of disc golf’s historical story.

I've always enjoyed the magazine and variety of articles on history, regional groups and events, player bios, technology trends, etc. Could the PDGA produce a digital version for member consumption that would cut printing/publication costs?

I FELL IN LOVE WITH OUR SPORT 15 YEARS AGO AND I HAVE PURCHASED EVERY BACK ISSUE IN ADDITION TO MY 5 YEAR SUBSCRIPTION! I HAVE EVERY ISSUE AND AM VERY SAD TO HEAR THIS!!!
