New agreement reached between PDGA and House of Discs

Monday, November 17, 2025 - 12:28

In an effort to preserve the history of the original European PDGA Major,  Discmania has agreed to license the European Open branding to the PDGA through a five-year agreement. During this term, the European Open will be the marquee event in Europe as the MPO/FPO continental Major. The formerly announced PDGA Europa Cup will be tabled for later use by PDGA Europe.

“Using the European Open name for the new major that PDGA Europe will be managing was always our first choice. The name has the richest history of all the various European majors that have been hosted over the years and is the name that has been used most often since the PDGA began awarding the Major designation to events in Europe. At one point in the process of determining a name for the European major moving forward, we had reasons to believe that the European Open option was not going to be available. When an arrangement was offered that met the parameters that both PDGA Global and PDGA Europe required, it was an easy decision to adopt that name for the Major moving forward.” - Doug Bjerkaas, PDGA Executive Director

Moving forward, PDGA Europe will continue to administer the European Open by reviewing bids from interested LOCs. The current hosting schedule for this European Major and Pro Worlds in 2029 remain unaffected.

“The European Open hosted in Nokia, Finland has become the premier disc golf event in Europe. While the history of the event has been based in Finland, as the PDGA seeks to have a Major that is representative of all of Europe, it only makes sense for the Major to carry the European Open name. We are excited to see the European Open be held in Estonia in 2026, and throughout Europe for years to come.” – Jussi Meresmaa, European Open Founder

“We’re pleased that an agreement was reached, as the European Open name carries both prestige and history within the sport. We’re excited to build on that legacy together and continue elevating the event’s impact in Europe. As for the PDGA Europa Cup, we already have some exciting plans in motion - stay tuned for more news soon!" - Matej Verl, PDGA Europe Tour Manager

“We’re thrilled that the PDGA has secured the European Open name for the upcoming European Major. The European Open carries tremendous history, heritage, and recognition within the global disc golf community, and we’re proud to be part of continuing that legacy. For us, the organizers of the European Disc Golf Festival (EDGF), our plans remain unchanged — the European Open and the Presidents Cup will be the cornerstones of the 2026 Festival. The EDGF will be an almost week-long, family-friendly celebration designed to bring together people of all ages. Beyond world-class disc golf, the Festival will feature entertainment, concerts, great food, vendors, and much more. We aim to create an unforgettable atmosphere that welcomes both passionate fans and new audiences to experience the sport in a vibrant festival setting.” – Matthias Vutt,  Head of Operations at the European Disc Golf Festival.
