Nearly one year after taking flight, the PDGA Diversity and Outreach Task Force is having an impact throughout the country.

There are already plans to continue that work in 2022.

Six projects throughout the country were funded in 2021 through the Diversity and Outreach Grant Program, from assisting in spreading the word about women’s disc golf during the PDGA’s Women’s Global Event, which hit record marks in 2021, to establishing disc golf in the Qualla Boundry in North Carolina.

In total, over $15,000 in funds were granted in 2021 and Justin Menickelli, who launched the program in January 2021 as the President of the PDGA Board of Directors, said two projects are already lined up for 2022.

The Task Force will shift to a PDGA standing committee in 2022.

“The purpose of the PDGA Diversity and Outreach Grant Program is to reveal relevant opportunities by encouraging our members to design and implement ways to move the PDGA membership, and the sport of disc golf, toward greater diversity,” Menickelli said. “The grants provide financial assistance for new, innovative projects, programs, workshops, and activities that strengthen excellence in diversity and outreach for under-represented populations within the PDGA membership.  Under-represented populations include but are not limited to Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), as well as women and girls.”

The grants range from $500 to $3,000 and are reviewed by the Task Force, which is comprised of a diverse group of six women and five men, from 24 years old to 72 years old. A key part of the grant selection process includes a project that reaches a historically under-represented group within the PDGA membership.

“Grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis,” Menickelli said. “Grants are awarded until all available funds are exhausted.”
