I recall someone describing a beadless Roc Innova makes for a different brand, but I don't remember what disc he was talking about. What disc fits that description and how does it fly compared to a beaded Roc; or a Shark?
Probably the MD-1. It flies like a cross between a Cucamonga and Ontario Roc. The Aurora MS is also similar and flies more like a Shark.

Is there a reason that the DiscCarrier looks and is designed so much like a Gorilla Boy bag?
Just curious...
First the Competition Bag looked way similiar to a Silverback and now the DiscCarrier looks an awful lot like a Kong...
I throw Innova and respect Innova a ton, but man, this sure looks like taking somebody else's idea and making it your own... funny I remember hearing about huge hub-bub about patents and intellectual property back in the day...
People can compare for themselves...
http://dealer.innovadiscs.com/
vs.
http://gorilla-boy.com/
One bag looking like another bag can be a fluke, but when it looks like just moving down the product line with a near duplication... that's just interesting...
Anyway... love what you guys are doing with the discs...

That does happen occasionally. I think it happens when the molders use too much color and it bleeds out. If it happens for any other reason, or combination of reasons, (such as being in a hot place for a period of time), I don't know. It has happened with yellow, gold, red, and purple, as I remember.

Dave,
I'm looking at a CE Valk that someone claims to be a 2nd run. It's opaque white and has flashing all the way around. It just doesn't seem as FLAT as I was expecting. Which run did you guys stop leaving the flashing on (or start removing it)?
I searched the discussion but failed to find my answer. If any CE Valk experts have a thought to add, I'd apprecite it. I know I can throw it to find out but since it's MINT I don't plan on it.
Other random info that some seem to think is important. VK and weight written inside the cricle on back. Nipple is cut close.
Thanks in advance!
p.s. Can I send in some of my used CE plastic to be melted down and made into new discs? :D

How long have Dragons been solid as rocks and looked like champ plastic? I got this thing last week just for the fact that it looked... different. And it is just so **** solid, I could kill a man with this thing.
How long these been out? Why are they so **** solid all of a sudden?
Not sure how to answer this. The Dragon is not supposed to be any stiffer than other golf discs. It is a type of DX.
I came on here to ask the same question. I have bought about 5 dragons and all of them are very hard and shinny. I recently found a older looking dragon that feels just like every other dx disc I have had. It is dull in shine, grippy, and very flexible. The new dragons I have purchased have poor grip and are very hard. They beat up very quickly too. I play a course here that has a lot of water and use the dragon a lot. I would hate to loose this grippy one I have found. Any chance the new dragons are going to be soft again. Better yet, any chance of making a floating orc, or teerex even if it had to weigh 150?

Thank god! I thought I was going insane! The dragon I have is an obscenely bright pink, incredibly solid almost to the point of being something I'd dare say shouldn't be legal (I think I could crack a car window easy). They're almost translucent. And it sounds like you're knocking on a door when you give it a nice rap.
My old ones were softer, more durable (these are solid, but anything sharp gouges them), and had a MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better grip. The only positive to these new ones is the added high speed stability, which I do like as compared to the old ones which were far more flippy.
It is almost like a disc made of the center plastic in the QuestAT Odyssey line.

The 2nd run Valks are misrepresented on a regular basis. Just because a Valk is flat means very little. Generally speaking CE Valks are quite flat and domey ones are less common. The easiest way to identify the second runs other than being Really flat is by the plastic type in combination with a very pronounced nipple. The 3rd run Valks are often confused with second runs because they are also really flat and have a similiar opaque plastic but they don't have the large nipple. Many of these I've seen are yellow and feel really "thin" compared to the later runs. Hope that helps a little.

Oh gosh yes! I think you'd sell a ton of them around here too. The local shop sells out of Dragons almost as soon as they get them in ... I've been trying to buy one for two weeks now. Some Glow Ontario Rocs were hot stamped with a vintage "Throw to Glow" stamp. These are the same Glow Ontarios that were produced earlier this year. I do not know how many were stamped.

I've have two socal stamped ones that I got from Mark that were domey. I'll trade you them Matt if you want em. Luckily someone hooked me up with a first run and another local golfer returned my lost one. The later being a year old at least, both being very flat.

I looked at a couple of the recent run. They do seem a little domey compared to the Star Gators, but I just test flew a clear yellow 175gm with Steve Wisecup, and it is definitely overstable. It's odd that they would be anything but overstable as it is the X mold, which is more overstable than the original Gator. There is a possibility that the unstable one is a fluke, or from the earlier mold (not X). The newer mold has a flatter nose and should be fairly easily discernable from the old.

Dave,
I just recently had to retire my third JK Aviar-X in 18 months because of a crack in the flight plate. I never threw any of the three for any type of shots except for putts within 30-40 feet, so I know it's not an impact issue. The crack happens to be where I usually rest my thumb. I know it is likely just a wear-and-tear issue, but I have many other discs that I have had for much longer that do not show the same type of wear. Is this just an issue with the composition of the JK plastic itself? Have you seen or heard of other examples of this issue? Thanks.

The original mold is the big bead. The L-type (Star) is X-mold with L bevel. The Champion (new) is X mold with big bead. Future runs should be all X mold with big bead for Champion and DX, and L for Star. All subject to review. The X mold has a blunter nose.

Dave...I have a question for you on the new runs of the 12x Aviars. I was out throwing in the field today with a couple of brand new 12x's and they are like throwing a rhyno or a bulldog. They have no glide and are rather overstable pigs for putters. So when I got home I compared them to my 11x's and noticed the bottom half of the nose is kind of flat on the 12x's where as my 11x's are rounded all the way. Was this done intentionally? Also...any reason why the new 12x's are some piggishly overstable for a putter?

All three were 4x JKs. Of all the JK Aviars I have seen, I would classify them as medium-to-stiff. Like I said originally, I admit that my own OCD makes me grip the disc in the same place every time, probably putting repetitive stress on the same spot over and over. However, I don't "gorilla-grip" the disc, especially when I putt, so I was surprised when this happened.
While I have your attention, Dave, could you also send me a PM hen you get a chance? I need contact info for whomever I need to speak with regarding a problem with one of the tear-prone Tour bags. Thanks.

The KCs have always been driver mold Aviars, which are supposed to be stable to overstable. Generally, the flatter the KC, the more overstable. The latest two runs of KCs were a new formula, so that may have had something to do with it. Nothing we did purposefully on the nose.

I think the Mirage (and later light Polecat) was produced as a light weight, less expensive premium disc for promotional giveaways and player packs back in the early 90s when you used to get one of those with the tourney hotstamp rather than a competition disc with a stamp. At some point, it fell out of popularity in favor of minis and regular weight discs with event stamps.

The new Sonic is a 21,6cm diameter disc that resembles a fastback, it is a small version of the Hero 235. It is legal up to 179gm. Most of the interest in this disc will be as putt and approach. It is slow, with low glide, and flies fairly straight at low speed with very little low speed fade. It can be used for medium range turnover shots.
The Sonic will be released in DX plastic in October.

Yeah Dave's kinda busy at the moment playing a little tournament down in Rock Hill. He should be tied up for the rest of the week.
Here's a cool thought. All those with questions should hop in thier car, jump on a plane, grab a train or whatever suits your fancy for travel and head on over to the tournament. You could ask him questions in person and probally catch some good golf while you're there.

Dave--how did testing of the dx cros turn out? how stable are they relative to the star? how would you compare them to the dx spider or gator? thx again
I don't know if this is timely at this point, but I did test the DX Cros and they were about the same as the Star, or slightly more stable. I was unable to beat one up enough with regular play, to get it to turn yet. I will keep on trying.

Dave,
Were the original release of the stock Pro Wraith's marked "First Run"? And also, has the mold changed any since the original production, i.e. a slightly different blend of plastics or physical shape?
Thanks.
The mold is the same, but the plastic blend may have changed slightly to what we have been using for a while now. I don't remember what the first run was stamped with.

Dave,
I have 5 of the new runs of dx Big Beads and the flight plate on all of them has sunken in pretty deep. Its about the same on the ones that I haven't thrown yet as well. I haven't stacked them, I have them stored in bins. Have you heard of or seen this problem?
Yes, I have heard of this problem. It usually happens as they sit in boxes or in shipping. We are using a new blend of plastic to try to prevent this. Flat is okay, but sunken, is not.

I don't know if you're asking about the plastic itself. If you're asking about a particular run, you should probably ask a knowledgeable collector. Other than that, the original runs had flashing that wasn't trimmed and had different writing than subsequent runs. The plastic itself is too difficult to tell apart.

Dave... I have a softer, flexible (not just flight plate but rim as well) 168 bright greenish leopard that was dyed and purchased through Jim Orum and SkySouth when I first started playing two years ago. I NEED another one because if I lose this one I dont know what I would do. Most others I find are far more stiff and not as agile as the one I currently use as my go to. Do you have any idea what run this could have possibly come from? Any guidance/suggestions are appreciated.

The Aviar has been my favorite disc for a long time. It has been tweaked several times. The JK was my favorite for several years, but recently I have switched to beadless Putt & Approach for putting, and P2s for drives and approaches. The P2 is more high speed stable. Both are beadless.

I assume you are talking about Champion or Star plastic as it is dyed. If so, it would be what we call "gummy" Star or Champion. We run these on ocassion as some people do prefer this plastic. Dealers should know the difference.

Dave my question goes back in time a bit. I'm not looking for specifics but rather an estimated guess if possible. I'm looking for possible run numbers of the original Star stamped discs (ie. "proto" stamp). You've clarified before that the "proto" stamps were actually 1st runs. Was there some limit as to how many were 1st runs of the earlier discs? Discs like the Barracuda, Stingray etc.
Thanks for any help you may have.

Weight is not a consideration with DX. We could do glow orange, but we would have to have pigment that glowed orange. If we had orange discs, and added regular glow, they wouldn't glow well because the orange color would mask the glow pigment.

The earlier limits were around 1800 to 2000, which equates to one pallet or 18 boxes. Some might have been more or less, but that used to be the general amount we shot for.

Yes, you could put a groove on the inside of the rim wall that wouldn't affect flight much if any. To get the maximum glow effect, you would have to use a clearish plastic like the I-dye plastic.

I'm tired of having to use a new DX Goblin every few months (DeLa hurts discs), and I really only like the star-stamped ones...they are flatter/more stable. Help Dave!
But the Goblin could be the most important disc I use in my game. Accurate upshots, and long/wind/low ceiling putts. I love that disc.

Hey Dave -
I was thinking the other day about the evolution of some of the popular molds out there. It seems to me that as time goes on, molds start to become tweaked and thus less stable (Beast, Valk, Eagle, and especially the new Monsters). But for whatever reason, the Star Starfire seems to be the MOST stable incarnation of that mold. In my opinion, the new Starfires are the most predictable, long range distance drivers on the market. I'n not a big fan of making things less stable over time, so I would like to thank you for making the Starfire more stable and would encourage you to keep the X mold as stable as it is.
Peace,

We have a formula of Pro putter type plastic that might work, but the Star and Champion will be limited to upper 160s and up.
The Pro formula will go down to 130 gms or so, but the test run was not particularly satisfactory. We will try again over the off season. I do want to have them available for the Japan Open in 2008.

Hey Deano,
In Champion plastic, the best I have used are the QOF for all around control and distance, and the Banshee for overstable. Last time in Japan we also had some pretty darn fast DX TeeRexes. The overstable ones were the best, but were hard to come by. DX Wraiths were probably the best for pure distance, but control could be tricky in the wind. By the time the Japan Open comes around, we will have tried several more possibilities, but they don't exist yet.

Darned tootin'. I got 10 from John Ahart & they beat the pants off of the "normal" release. WAY flat, WAY fast, & nicely overstable out of the box. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool 150-class thrower, and the JO TeeRexes are the best 150-class max distance driver yet, IMHO.

Two questions about the Cro:
1. Is there any difference in the flight of different colors?
2. Is there any possibility of a run of Cro's in Champ plastic. (I prefer weights around 160 and I figure a Champ run will be the only way to get them. I play in the trees a lot so DX won't help.)
Also, in the spirit of the rejuvinated Gremlin, might we ever see a Champ Puma? I found 2, 160 gm., DX Pumas and they are fantastic. (Note: if anyone out there has a stack of Puma's just lounging around the house eating their pets and just generally causing trouble, feel free to contact me. Sometimes the colors do affect the flight characteristic of discs. The Star and Champion plastic make about the same weights, so there should already be some Star Cros in the mid sixties. If they are gone, they will be back next run. We don't have any immediate plans to run Champion Cros. The Puma was discontinued, so it is unlikely to be made in Champion.

Hi Dave,
Have you ever considered making the Flat-top / Ching-stamped Roc its own mold so it could be produced in plastics other than DX? Maybe another addition to the USDGS fund raisers? ("Star Flat-top Roc" has a nice ring to it...)
Or...will the process that makes them flat also work for Pro plastic?
Thanks
A Sentinel might be what you are looking for. I am unfamiliar with the Ching process, and don't plan on making a mold to mimic the result of the process.

Dave--would you say the current dx teerexs' are more stable than the dx wraiths? i throw these at 150 class. any plans to discontinue the dx teerex? thanks
The current DX Teerexes were a disappointment in consistency. We were planning on discontinuing them because they weren't much different than the DX Wraiths. However, we finally fixed the mold and are planning on giving it another shot. Hopefully, we can make them consistently stable.

Innova Wish List :
Star Banshees - I love the KC Pros and would really like to try this in Star Plastic. Very underrated disc!
CFR(Champion) Whippets - Why only the one champion run? This would probably be a big seller in the CFR program.
CFR(Champion) Maxs - ?
Now that the Wraith is a regular production disc in Champion plastic, is the TeeRex next?

Dave,
Congratulations on the Destroyer being a huge success! I was wondering since it's so popular if we'd see more discs like it? And more specifically do you expect to make more (and less stable) discs with the 2.2 cm rim thickness?
Thanks,
Jerry

It seems like the RexX has taken the place of the Starfire in the CFR lineup. I would be surpirsed to see it removed anytime soon.
