Hey Dave,
Whats going on with the INNColor Process? I heard a rumor all orders are on freeze for now! Can you shed any light?
The INNColor process is on hold for now. One of the pieces of equipment used is no longer operable. We might be able to use the older process at some point to do orders on hold. We are investigating a new way of doing the INNColor to replace the old way.
Are they going to be cartoony now?

Dave really lit a fire under this thread...so I will try to help out and answer the questions that I know have been asked before.
They had to change the plastic/molding procedure with the KC Aviars because the 11x and subsequent models were caving in on top. The new 12x Aviars are noticeably more domey (to overcorrect for the possibility of flight plate descention in over time) and also are a bit more rubbery feeling, though they are still quite rigid like usual. Innova pro Kevin McCoy loves them!

The material is different from previous KC Aviars. We were having significant trouble molding the previous material without many scrap parts, so we switched to the current material.

With the Pro plastic running out, would there be any possibility in releasing a mid-range plastic line in the same type as the KC Aviars and KC Whippets? Only drivers are being discontinued in Pro. That type of plastic can't be found anymore and that is what is causing it. Other Pro discs (which aren't made in the driver plastic) should be fine.

I am not a collector so I can't tell you how much it is worth, but any colored KC Roc is relatively rare. Some runs have no colors at all. Some have a small amount of the total. One run had two colors. When you add the 8X, 9X, 10X etc., it makes the older colored Rocs more rare.

The Beast X is about as stable as a normal Orc. Some Orcs are more stable. There was some overlap between the Beast X and the Orc. Now there is almost no overlap.
The only Beast X I have much experience with is a Pro Line (champion plastic) that is very flat on top. Almost all of the Orcs I have thrown have a nice curvature or dome to the flight plate and I think this makes the biggest difference between the Orc and the old mold Beast.
For me, the flatness of the Beast makes the disc fade slightly harder and when it is fading it is losing altitude more quickly as well. The domey Orc has a smoother "rounded" turn and fade that allows the disc to maintain more altitude as it slows down and begins to fade left (RHBH).
I like the Orc for distance and the Beast for accuracy. The OLF is kind of in between these two and is more like 9 speed than 10 speed. All good discs, but Orcs are my favorite. Hope this helps

Mar 24 2007, 09:49 AM
Hey Dave,
Is it possible to recycle old plastic? What would happen if you shredded and melted down a bunch of old discs? Would the result be usable?
It is relatively easy and environmentally friendly to recycle bad parts during production. Old used parts are a little different. Long exposure to UV radiation and impregnation of dirt particles make it less than ideal, but still can be done in some cases. You would have to know the make up of the particular plastics to be recycled, or you will have further contamination issues with incompatible plastics. All this being said, DX plastic would probably be the easiest to recycle, but the least cost effective, and suffers the most UV damage. The urethanes would be the most cost effective, but much harder to avoid cross contamination with other plastics. The cost of recycling DX is about 50% the cost of the initial mix. The cost of recycling urethanes is 20% of the cost of the initial mix. The resulting color of the recycled plastic is another issue. Unless you have a lot of plastic that has been segregated by type and color, you are going to get a chocolate mess.

Hey Dave,
A player identically throws a TeeBird and a Starfire of matching weights and plastics. How much more distance should the Starfire go?
I would say it depends on how far they can throw in general. If said player can throw the teebird 300ft then maybe 325ft or so with the starfire, but if the player can throw a teebird 400ft. I would think they could throw a starfire 450ft or so. That is my opinion but I would imagine dave would say something similar.

Hey Dave,
A player identically throws a TeeBird and a Starfire of matching weights and plastics. How much more distance should the Starfire go?
Most of the difference will probably be with upwind distance as the Starfire is faster than the TeeBird. The total upwind distance difference will depend on the wind speed and throwing style. Generally, you can expect no more than around 20 to 30 feet of extra distance. Sometimes less. Downwind difference is even harder to extrapolate. Sometimes, you might actually get more distance from a TeeBird than a Starfire, depending on your throwing style, and the wind speed and left right direction.

they are the no bead or the small bead. they are definitly not the driver. if to look at the bottom of the rim, if it is totally straight after the nose its a no bead or p&a mold. if there is a stabalizer its a small bead

The Q Omega is the small bead putter mold. It is now exclusive to Millennium, as we now use the no bead for putters.

Is the DX aviar with a fly girl Aloha stamp the same type of plastic as the Ching stamped rocs? (I ask this because I here people say that ching stamp rocs are a softer plastic and have stamps like that on them).

Speed: 9
Glide: 4
High Speed Turn: -1
Low Speed Fade: 3
I've thrown the disc quite a bit and this is how I would rate it. For a distance driver it flies very straight overall. I would simply consider it a slower Orc with the benefits being added control and less nose angle sensitivity.

Discspeed's ratings are close. The only floating number is the high speed turn, which is somewhere between 0 and 1. The Qs seem to be closer to 0, and the Ss seem to be closer to 1.

Hi Dave,
Any chance for a timeline on when more TFR discs will be available on the East Coast, and also when will they have blank Star Leopards?.......been waiting awhile..
No clue, but they get shipments every week. They should have every TFR disc that we do. Which TFR disc are you referring to?
I think all they offered was Champion and Star Teerex-x's and the Star Kite. Is that the same as the West?
How big would both the tourney and order need to be for a special run of something? Also, how much time is permitted for something like that to happen, or is it only a special circumstance?
As far as the Star Leopards go, I dont think Ive seen them in the blank stock as of yet.

We have many more than you mentioned, so the East Coast should too. BB Aviars and Ontario Rocs have been popular lately for TFR.
Special runs for tournaments are in special circumstances and usually NT or national size tourneys. Lead time is usually around 4 to 6 months, but sometimes we happen to be running the disc we need, so it could happen sooner.

There is a possibility, but it is small. The Raven never had enough sales.
The Python was a sister disc of the Ram. I can't come up with the ratings out of my head, but if you have them for the Ram, they're close, with the high speed stability being about -1. Just guessing, I would say 6, 5, -1, 3.

The official INNOVA ratings for the Python and Ram are as follows:

Python: 6, 4, -1, 2
We hope to get the ratings for our older discs published somewhere on the INNOVA website in the coming weeks.

Yup, the Pro Line is being phased out...page 22 of this same thread posted by Dave D.
All Pro drivers will be eventually discontinued unless we can find a new supply. Last to go will be the Pro Wraith. Pro Orcs are already gone. We should have a slot for Roadrunnners this month.

DX Teerex is probably at least as overstable as a Firebird when new. There is a good chance or both a Monster and a Max in DX if we can make them consistently. The higher up the scale a driver is, the more difficult it is to mold consistently.

I bought a new Champ TL from Julianna over the weekend. The stamp on it is from 2003.
When I showed some of my friends one of them indicated that it might be a different TL mold than is used now.
Anyone know anything about a recent re-tool of the TL mold?
Thanks,

Star Aviar (Aviar P&A) - original "no bead" aviar - straightest flying with least amount of fade
Omega/supersoft - small beaded aviar - slightly more high speed stable, less flippy right out of the hand on hard throws
Star Aviar Driver/KC/JK-X - big bead avair - more high speed stability and more low speed fade

I was wondering if Innova has records of when first runs of all discs were made? I've seen people on ebay claim that an avair-xd was the first roc, I have a packing slip from may 1986 saying rocs are the new hot disc. I have been collecting for a long time and would love to see the source set all the records straight. Does anybody have this info ? If not , I think it would be great to have this info for ebay , collectors, and so people 30 years from now can look at the roots of the best sport in the world!!! I'm sure it's alot of work but the longer it goes undone , the more work it becomes. Thats just my humble opinion. Looking forward to an answer. Thanks for 23 years of pure enjoyment and for takeing the time to serve the public!!! thanks Mark Peterson

Bingo! I bought a classic roc in the newer plastic and thought I'd have to run it over with a semi to break it in to "old" classic roc style. If I play enough coldbrook, that's like a semi though.
Dave, is this a trait of the newest blend of DX plastic? I've noticed not only the CR, but my spider is more stable that the older stuff...and not to mention the newest run of DX drivers.

Yes, the newer DX plastic tends to be a little more stable if molded well. The long range drivers have been the most difficult to mold well. Putters, mid ranges, and fairway drivers have been going generally well, which includes the Spider and CR.

The Ontario is also known as a Flattop. We don't use that mold anymore. It was used as a substitute when the San Marino mold wasn't working properly.
The San Marino has been repaired, so there is no longer any use for the Ontario.

Dave, I'm sure this has been asked many times before but the search came up with nothing. I just got back from our local disc golf shop and i picked up a KC Aviar that has no (X) stamp on it. Just has the double line from top to bottom. I compaired it to my Aviars at home (10X, 11X, and 12X) and this one is closest to the 10X. It is very stiff/hard and is almost concave accross the top. I am assuming that this would be considered a 0X Aviar like the Roc's with this stamp, but my question is what mold was used to make this and why the difference in shape. I accually pulled it out of a box that just came in from Innova to the shop this morning so it's not one that has been setting in the shop for a while.

That would be possible, but very difficult. Heavy coverage, especially in the middle is the most difficult thing to do with a hot stamp. Air bubbles are trapped beneath the foil and the foil would have a difficult time sticking in random places.

I going to take a guess that X is referring to the Champ mold as compared to the Star mold. And I heard that the Champ got discontinued (is this true?), so that would be a good reason for a different Star mold.
Then again, I'm from the school of thought that says if the mold changes you should change the name. I understand that the goal is to keep flight characteristics the same across types of plastic, but for instance, I was really dissappointed to get my Star Gremlins and they not be the mold I was expecting. They have since been sold to someone else.

The plan right now is to make DX and Champion in the new mold (X). The Champion type will be a limited run. Not sure what type of Star we will run next time, but it will most likely be limited too. i prefer the original mold gator in the champ and dx. i thought the star i bought was less overstable, and the mold is definately diffirent. when youi say new x-type, do you mean the original gator mold,? this is what i have and throw in dx and champ. it works great imo. do you know when the dx leopards will be run in the new dx plastic? thx

New X type Gators are similar to the original, but with a new top part. The Leopards have been run already. They were run in a blend of new and older DX.

Dave, No complaints about the new Star Gator L. It's dead straight with a nice hard fade. The CH Gator, Original, seemed to me to be more high speed overstable which made it less prone to turning over in the wind and better for hyser spike type shots. The new SGL flies like an original that is broken in ... and that's about when I used to retire my CH Gators.
I think I can say that what those of us who throw (or used to throw) the CH Gator Original want is a really overstable version of the Gator with high-speed overstable flight, and lot's of fade.
When I flick a Gator, I don't want it to fly too straight, I would like it to turn a bit during the high-speed portion of the flight, and then fade hard. That's how the old CH Gator with the holo stamp flew.

Pro Leopards are less stable than DX. The Star and Champion are a little more stable. I messed with the Gator because I throw them and was disappointed with the occassional Gator I threw. It was too easy for me to flip them up. I wanted them to be stable into a good velocity wind. They were not always stable. They will be now. We might leave the Star Gator the way it is for those who don't want the extra stability.

Yes, I have thrown them. I currently have two in my bag. I have been using them for low long tunnel shots that I start with hyzer. I get good distance with this disc.
Generally, I would say they have good speed, very good glide, a nice slow turn, and a moderately low fade.

The new Competition Bag will be released in about two to three weeks. It is currently undergoing stress testing, which I expect it to pass. I have been using this bag for the past two months. This bag is made by our affiliates in Japan, Hero Discs.

that's the kind of info i would love as well. for example the strengths and weaknesses (Roadrunner, Sidewinder, Leopard) of each of these molds (in candy plastic) relative to one another...
i am guessing a positive of the Leopard would be it is least nose-angle sensitive and longest but the drawback might be it is slower, followed by the RR and then the SW (Sidewinder being the most nose-angle sensitive but also the fastest and longest). (?)

From what I've experenced the Sidewinder is a little more stable than the Roadrunner. If you flip a roadrunner it'll stay flipped which is why its a good disc to throw rollers with, while a Sidewinder will fade back a bit at the end of its flight making it a great straight shot driver. The Leopard is alot like a Sidewinder when new but slower flight wise.

Which works best for you if you have a long, tight, straight wooded tunnel shot where you can't afford too much fade?
Dave -- if you know you can't reach the pin due to the hole length on such a shot -- would you gear down to a midrange in order to maintain accuracy?

I would use a Leopard if I were going for it and there was enough room, or I might throw a very low shot with a Roadrunner. Or gear down and throw a soft DX midrange, if I had one, or a Putter, if the fairway were too narrow. The soft midrange or putter would prevent mammoth bounces off trees on imperfect shots. The tree bounces could be much worse than the fade at the end of a shot.

Hi Dave:
Some of the online retailers have me very confused. Maybe you can help me out. Please educate me about Starfires.
I am familiar with:
Starfire (Champ and Star)
Starfire-L (Champ, Star and Pro)
Is there also something called the Starfire-X? If so, how much more overstable is it than the Starfire?
Thanks,
Mike
Is this the general scheme of things? A regular mold, an L mold and an X mold?

The molds are CFR runs witch I dont think they make anymore, then they came out with Champ SL as fundraiser, which is the same as a Pro, or Star SL, then they came out with the Starfire in mass production in Champ and Star which is the X mold. There were some CFR-X's out there too.
So think SL=understable
CFR=straight
X=overstable
I like the X molds!

Not as fast but Star Starfires are great wind discs cause they just fly straight into a stiff head wind without turnning over like a Tee Rex might.

The SL/SF are as close of a pair as you can get to the TB/TL combo. Some new Star SLs are more overstable than some Champ SFs, just like some TLs are more stable/as stable as some TBs (compare older CFR TLs to newer opaque Champ TBs and the TL is more stable). So if you know Teebirds then you understand the fundamental differences between L and X. X is always more predictable, especially during the last portion of the flight, L has more glide and forward penetration during the finish. I think the SF is faster, the SL has more distance potential. Hope this helps.

Second, I picked up an old Innova disc with a flying eye stamp on it that I originally thought was a Viper, I spoke with a friend and he thought it might be a Ram. I have never felt a Ram so I am not sure about this. The plastic is old DX feels the same as my Ontario Rocs. It also has an ink stamp on the bottom that is smudged so I can't see it. Can you give me any history on this and tell me the difference between a Ram and a Viper.

Those DX Teerexes from the So Cal Championships are superb. The plastic is dense, durable and super grippy. plus they are overstable like a whippet when new. The other day we had the strongest winds of the year 30mph+ and I was the only person able to throw 350' left hook into the headwind. I would love to see more teerexes like these (my 175 champ teerex-x gsc stamp are far less overstable)

Dave,
I recently picked up a new star stingray as did a buddy of mine around the same time. When we were on the course the other day i was inspecting his and noticed significant differences. Mine is really domey but his is basically a flat top disc. I have yet to throw his, but besides the obvious domey-ness, what are the differences is their flight characteristics? These 2 discs are so different its almost like its not even the same disc as opposed to just a different mold. Thanks in advance
