MARKB

I still have yet to throw one but even the inferno which may be flippy when thrown flat can be made to be a straight flyer with a lot of power.
Maybe something to do with the way you are throwing it? Or the line you are throwing it on?
Not saying the disc isnt what it is but I am not saying its all the thrower either.
BTW
Got my warlocks! Very very nice, got to do some putting with them. A little stiff but its not much of an issue, cant wait to try the Supersoft version. Now just waiting to try the RI, RI-DT, Scorcher etc etc....
I know I havnt talked to you yet dave but would it be worth calling quest once to go down there and check out the facility and maybe get some discs that way?

Yeah I know I put a lot of snap on my discs these days so I am not much of smooth thrower, but I would say it is as fast a wraith with a little more turn. I thought it turned over like an orc for me but I could tell it was faster.

Hey Alan they all do. you can just call the shop at (314) 487-5204 and ask for ten of whatever you want for $50. This is a misstamp deal but most aren't even really messed up. They may be low on a few molds but while I was up there this summer I came across 150s of every disc.

Also, when are warlocks going to be distributed? I want one.

MARKB
Dec 28 2006, 05:21 PM
Quick answer to that YES
THe ELX in S plastic is pretty straight out of the box and beats in to a slow turner for me at least. The E can hold a straight line with HS or have more fade with LS, handles the wind better as well
fredman
Dec 28 2006, 05:31 PM
E-ELX is what I throw, can rip it flat and place it right where it needs to go with the fade.

The softer blurrs are much easier for me (and my small arm) to flip up from a hyzer. However, I flexed one of those stiff ones like an H Illusion and turned it into a roller. I can't seem to do that with the softer one.

I would say change it to something different...I'm a big fan of the Element-X and I would rather it not get an older name that sounds really close to the wizard and warlock...how bout something different...I really liked the original idea of the different elements...maybe fire for the element-x and maybe do something with the DT on the element-x and the regular element mold to get the rest of the elements...my 2 cents!! :D

Got some of the softer Blurrs yesterday and these definately feel and fly different than the protos. I would say the proto is a slightly more overstable illusion while the current production blurr is a slightly less overstable illusion. I was able to find some D and get a few hyzer fliped to a great S curve for about 450 on a constistant basis! Yay for these wow... now if my protos could do the same, still great Straight distance of about 420 :)

Dave,
How does the normal sabre differ from the "844" sabre?
gdstour
Dec 31 2006, 09:54 PM
The sabres that are stamped 844 were from the 1st tooling 1998-99 and do not have the small bead they have a chamfer,,, they also have a thinner un-uniform flight plate and sharper nose.
The Sabres that have 844 written on the back are from a run of really expensive S material that is used for welding cables that has a flame retardant in it. they ch should have a little bit of a cherry smell?
if it is not stamped than it was just a run,,, there were also some Blazes stamped 844 circa 1999 that didnt have the bead and also some with writing on the back that were just a special run.
The time difference between the stamped and the hand written ones are about 5 or 6 years.

Not sure about the H Yellow ones, we have some at the shop and they look domey.
None of us have test flown them yet.
We took the rough finish on the top of the Inferno out a little farther and I think it made them have more resistance to turn.
I should get out tomorrow to test fly a few so I have an educated answer.
We have had several people tell us that the latest runs were more overstable, I think its the micro dimple extension that is doing it.
The experimenting with surface technologies is proving to have a tremendous effect on the discs with both the DT on the rims and the Micor Dt on the tops.:cool::cool:

You are correct Mark,
No the milky white ones were kind of translucent.
This is a solid white one from the run this spring.
The plastic in both is incredible, it was just the milky ones were less overstable ( straighter) for some reason, but had the same amount of resistance to turn.
We are going to work on another run like those soft flat milky ones and will eventually add a less concave wing and even a dimpled wing.
The new golf ball dimple like technology on the raging inferno DT is really making the disc very controllable and the glide is awesome!
The Dt on the Sabre. blaze and Hybrid will surely make these discs faster and less overstable.

With regards to the Ice Bowl Infernos, these are reported as stable as compared to previous runs of Infernos. Did they come out of the mold this way? Is it possible these are actually Raging Infernos?
From another message board:
i field tested one of the ice bowl infernos and it seemed stable to me. with slight annie it has real good glide. maybe there are different versions of this disc but the ice bowl discs are not hyzer flips, at least not the one i tried out (170 blue)

Jan 09 2007, 10:29 PM
Jeff I would say most Inferno's fall into just about the same stability category.
It is probably the most stable ( straight) flying high speed driver over the widest range of launch velocities.
You cant really base too much on what is posted, unless you know the poster personally.
There is so much that goes into a flight like velocity, rotation, trajectory not to mention angles of release and off axis rotation.
the Inferno is a straight flying High speed driver for the widest range of players I have ever thrown, regardless of the color or run!
We have sent players overstable Speed demons and they have sent them back saying the were too flippy.
One mans hyzer is another mans turnover.
Buy and throw a disc for your self or borrow one and throw it. This is really the only way to know for sure about a disc.
Jeff_LaG
Jan 10 2007, 01:16 AM
I know the guy well - we have played together for about ten years. He probably throws a little farther than me, so if he's got an Inferno that's stable, then that's far different from what I've experienced. I'm just wondering if this run of Ice Bowl Infernos are known to be more stable.

Hey Dave, any chance of an Inferno-like disc with a narrower rim? I'm finding the Inferno rim is too wide for my stubby fingers. Combined with the rounded off inner rim, I just can't get a good grip. I really like the flight of the disc though...the gyroscopic effect is obvious.

As far as modifying the Wizard, in my opinion I think the design is pretty sweet how it is. I think the Wizard is the most popular putter out right now. I've talked to so many players that when you ask them what they throw they reply "All Innova....and a Wizard". So that would be a keep it how it is for me, but super gummy and floppy of course :D

I like my SS chalky, grippy, but not floppy. The spring motion seems like it gives an inconsistant hieght on release. I wouldn't mess with them if i were you, Dave. But then again, if you did, I would still order some of those SSS for playing catch (speaking of which, Id like to add some more stuff (magic plus other stuff) to my order-I'll call the shop tomorow (I called to add some magic to my order- hope it did't go out yet!- If you feel like checking, Im Dave M from MI- also, Im the one who you PM'd about Iron Byron in response to my post about a year ago. Im in a test lab now that has a pretty sweet machine shop).
Think you can get that grippy ss material in a specific gravity below 1 AND be supper soft and grippy to make the best water disc invented? If you still have the old thicker flight plate mold and opened it up alot, you could get enough material in it to make a decent golf wt (like 170, heck, you could take it up to 175 even).

I guess I should have made my post a little more clear.
we will not be changing the Wizard mold.
I am talking about a NEW top that will drop off as the core does so that the flight plate is a uniform thickness.
the way the flight plate thcens up to .095 at the outer most part by the wing doesnt allow for really flexible runs without warping the center.
I am atlking about a slsightly thicker to so we can run goey butter cake plastic in the mix!  :cool:

Hey Dave, I was playing my second round in a tournament the other weekend and my favorite soft wizard cracked. It was kinda odd the way it cracked. It cracked right in the center of the disc where the stamp is. I was just wondering if this is somthing common with wizards or if this type of crack is somthing that you have not seen with a wizard before.
It all worked out perfectly though, because with my winnings from the tournament I picked up two sweet warlocks. Also, are warlocks approved for sanctioned PDGA play?

I also sold a few on Ebay and will again, its part of our promotional effort.
We will not be releasing the Rage for about 6-10 weeks.
It will be part of our auto ship program.
We want to make sure we market and hype the new releases this year before they are released.
The Warlock and Rage are not odga approved yet.
The warlocks should be ready to ship within 2 weeks and will be sent off for pdga approval next week.
Both discs are sweet and a great additiion to our line-up.

thats funny, the day I got my rages I opened the box there were 2 s demons, 2 E demons, 2 E rages, and 2 Blurs...
everything but the Blurs have the same demon face stamp... I assumed the reages were raging infernos since I had not heard of the rage at that time...
Now I have to say Rage is really my goto driver for anything 300-400 I dont have to throw it as hard as the spirit to get the same flight, and it is super predictable... now there is only one bug to work out on the rage... it nees a bigger spirit skip.

What disc would you recommend as a forehand roller?
gdstour
Jan 17 2007, 11:28 PM
I would really only recommend using a forehand roller if you are in trouble in the woods or scrambling out of a bad lie.
side arms and forehands will mess up you elbo and limit your years of playing.
If you have to throw a sidearm roller drive I would reccomend a blurr or illusion for distance and a Hybrid or sabre or Element for controlled mid-range stufff and of course a Wizard ( they roll much r farther than you think!)
thatdirtykid
Jan 17 2007, 11:38 PM
and of course a Wizard ( they roll much r farther than you think!)
My beat to hell medium (aka money wizard) is my get out of trouble flick roller. I think all the extra weight on the rim helps keep it standing. (its perfect for turning corners and such out from under the big pines here in CO )

Unfortunately, it's white, and I've got to wait until all this snow melts (whenever that will be). But it does feel sweet. We should be shipping out the discs by the middle of next week. If you are not part of the Auto ship program you can either buy one from one of our wholesalers or wait 4 weeks until we releases them to the general public.
Minimum participation in the Auto-Ship Program is only 20 discs @ $4.80 plus shipping so thats around $105.00.
You can drop out go up or go down in the program at anytime.
discs can also be sent back after 60 days trading out for previously released models.
If anyone needs all the info on how to get in on the Auto ship program email me at

Tokyo,
Have you thrown both the Spirit and Speed demon in E plastic?
In the middle of summer we changed the wing on the speed demon, adding Dimple technology or DT.
We only ran about 300, mostly a dark brick red and less than 10 Orange.
The Speed demon DTs fly like a broken in Spirit right out of the box. Once we get them up and running this spring we should be able to get some really straight flying ones.
If you like the overstableness of the older Speed demons I would stick with the spirits.
We will eventually add DT technology to all of our models.
The sabre and Hybrid will both emerge as bot Tee-birdisc!!!

what is the difference in stability for the RI and the RI-DT? I have 2 RI that are orange and they are a little less stable than the pink Blurrs I had been throwing. I would think the RI-DT would be less overstable than the RI and that would put it close to the stability of an Inferno (Or I got two RI that are mutant) I threw them both and at 90-100% I was throwing them 25-30 feet high with just a little hyzer they were popping up flat at about 60 feet and slowly turning right to about 350 then slowly fading back to finish about the same line they started at 400+. if you couldn't release them, then i want one. always need more overstability for trick shots. love them tricksies.
frankly, i was hoping for more overstability when you sent me those super flat speed demons (still love 'em). if you can find any of those clear spirits, that might do it for me...

i dont have a picture of mine, but matt has seen it....i had someone dye mighty mouse on it. the dying process made it more overstable than it was to begin with...i love it!!
I think the Spirit's are twice as stable as the Speed Demon's were.
I dont think so at all i think a spirt is like a monster X and a speed demons are like a monster xxxxx thier so crazy overstable thiers really no comparsion
In my opinion it's like this.....Speed Demon = Firebird L.........Spirit = Firebird X

Been hereing alot of good things about gateway disc, and after playing a round with John McCray at the USDGC and seeing him throw these disc i want to get some and start throwing them to see if they are for me. I throw innnova mostly, what compares to a good tuned roc, wraiths and road runners, what do i need to make that switch.

I got an ace at our ice bowl with an element x then aced the acepot throw off with my putter. Back to back days bringing home the ace pot. Got 3rd on Saturday and 1st Sunday. So it was a fun chilly weekend to play golf.
The warlock was for sure a helper. Most the round my hands were to cold to grasp the E wizard but the warlock had the perfect grip in the cold and did what I needed it to all the time.

the scorcher has a REALLY big bead. i can't handle it. hurts my fingers when i throw.
with that said, i like the flight. overstable enough to handle pretty much any headwind, but doesn't have the extreme fade of the spirit or speed demon (or rage, so i hear), so you get milder skips.

retards for brains is right. The bead on them is pretty big and the disc is pretty overstable.

The scorcher is very similar to a RAM!
Domey but with a concave wing,
Quest is running a new plastic in their molds it seems to be a LOT closer to our E now.
It is fairly flexible, but still has the subtle dome and is really durable, with a lot of memory!
Feels really good in the hand even in cold weather they were not getting stiff, its pretty high end Urethane.

Is there any chance you would do a run of wizards in that "REAL" S.S.plastic? You know the ones that warped after you used them, they got to look like Mojo's! I only have a few left and that is my only putter I trust!

is the warlock like the aviar???
Sure. They're both putt and approach discs. :) It's similar to a beadless aviar in the fact that it's more prone to turn over and has less low speed stability than it's beaded counterpart.
I let a friend of mine feel one of my warlocks, and he uses omega AP's and beadless aviars for upshots. He thought they felt very similar. It's been cold and snowy here, and I haven't had a chance to give him one of my warlocks to throw yet, so I can't vouch for any subtle differences in flight.

We have not sent the Warlock off for pdga approval yet.
We are wanting to send the Warlock and Rage in at the same time and will be running Rages early next week.
The Rage is a Tamed down, less overstable version of the Spirit. ( just as fast, if not faster, but less overs-stable)
We also have the Blast-DT, Diablo-DT and the Assassin we will be releasing this spring ( about 1 each month).
For those vendors who would like to sell Gateway discs this year we suggest signing up for the Auto-ship program.
All 2500 "soft" warlocks were sold through the auto ship program and we are completely sold out!

i have some warlocks and they say PDGA approved on the back.
also i thingn they are faster than the no bead aviar. which makes them great upshot discs. i have not had them long enough to know if they will replace my wizard as a putter (i doubt it) but it has a place in bag for sure!! when are you going to run more?
gdstour
Feb 16 2007, 02:06 AM
We probably wont be running anymore for about 4 weeks.
The Blast DT is the Blurr/Rage top and the speed demon -DT wing. It should flip up a bit and be as fast as anything out there( very sharp on the nose).
The Diablo DT will be the Raging Inferno-DT with a beefier nose and thicker flight plate making it a little less gyroscopic and able to handle impacts a little better.
Depending on shrinkage and where the parting line winds up, it should become less overstable than the Raging Inferno-Dt and Blurr and more of a valkrye/beast type disc.

All they could do as far as I know is find that it is not approved and ask you not to use it any further... no penalty would be invoked...
But since it's getting sent off monday it will be approved pretty quick.

And I realize that. It wasnt as much of a smartass answer as you would think. If people are going to buy them, they are going to sell them. Period. Its only a short time that they will be available and not approved, and there arent a ton of sanctioned events going on right now. Why not release them when there's interest?

If a disc is within specifications, why does it have to be approved by the PDGA? Its not like the companies wait for approval before making the mold and running a good number of discs. The specifications are spelled out pretty clearly, so obviously a disc company knows that the disc will be approved, its just a matter of the formality of getting it approved. This seems to me an unneccesary hoop that we make the manufacturer jump through. I could see the need for approval if the design was a large jump, like the aerobie epic, but not for something like the Warlock, a modified version of an existing disc. Innova changes its molds completely all the time without getting any new approval for the new molds. Do we really expect Gateway to make one mold for testing, and then create a whole new mold that says "PDGA APPROVED" once the PDGA has gone through the approval process?
In my opinion the manufacturer should be able to simply make discs for competition and leave it up to the PDGA to enforce standards. Disc companies will comply with the rules because if they don't then they would be at a serious loss financially if the PDGA found it to not comply with the clear standards.

Feb 22 2007, 03:38 PM
You're right. Approval shouldn't be the issue. The PDGA should only step in to say that something is illegal not approve every disc (like the PGA and square grooves on a golf club). But the PDGA takes $100 for approval per disc.

Its easier to have a defined body approving specific discs than it is to set "illegal" properties and then let TD's decide if a disc is legal or not on the course.
By the way, the PGA does inspect, approve and ban golf balls and clubs.

Hey Dave,
I have a question about the GDS Tours. My college is hosting a tourney next month, and I am wondering how much it is for this to be a GDS sponsored tournament. The White level seems to be the best for this kind of tournament. So, how much would it cost for you to come down to Bowling Green and host?

This may be true but you won't find a ball or club that says PGA approved.
