Good to hear the course is being used so much. I just wish I could get over this bronchitis so that I can play too. I have figured out the first draft of the two courses. As soon as I clean it up a little I will let you know. Bueno suerte to the lodgas going to san saba. Just remember, there are no trees....Keep using 15a, b, and c as much as possible. The more you play them, the better the chance they get used at Texas 10. I want to publicly acknowledge the Readings for donating prizes to our civ./mil. tournament. A special thanks to our resident PRO female for signing a few discs as well. And finally, for the upcoming league play, as always, please, please, please give the right of way to the public. If the soccer teams are on any fairway, again let me know asap. Now get back to work Dave!!

The new holes are great. Some of the right handed players are having trouble with the rough on the right side of 15A and some are having trouble with the rough on the left side of 15B. So, if you are looking for feedback on the new holes, those areas might be cleaned up a little. I got no problem because I don't throw hard enough to get too deep and I think the holes are fine, especially the mando hole on the clowns mouth. Been real lucky on that one so far. I really think there will be a big need for a spotter during tournaments on 15B, whether it is a player or another individual. Again, keep up the good work and get well so I can whip up on an intermediate player other than Jody. :D

Apr 08 2005, 04:11 PM

Hey guys, great news, The Lackland Disc Golf Course has been approved and materials are being ordered. With Doug being deployed as of right now, we will get the materials, do all of the paper work and get all of the approvals needed from the Civil Engineers and be ready to put the course in in about 60 days. We will wait for Doug to get home to start since this has been his baby and he has worked so hard on it.

I am getting the final materials together on paper for the purchase order, (or whatever the military calls it). As soon as they come in, it is go for putting in the course.

I will let you know more about it when Lackland gets back to me.

By the way, congrats to LIVE OAK at Worlds Doubles. What a weekend we all had. Good job guys.

31 Players turn up for the opening of the 2005 Tuesday League. Great turnout, thanks!

We played 4 of the 5 new holes at Universal City, and they played pretty tough. I took a 4, 3, 5, and 3 on them. Ouch! Thanks to Larry, Shawn and Jason for putting out temp baskets till the city puts them in permanent. We hope to cut the 5th hole soon, but not this weekend, as the property owner is out of town.

Special kudos to Laura Karshis for stepping up and playing with the boys! If we can get enough Rec/Am women out, I'd be happy to have a division you can call your own.

Reuben Campos takes Open with 4 under par. Josh Barling takes Am with even par, and Jerrod Votion takes Rec with 6 over. Josh and Jerrod will move up a division next week. If they cash in the higher division, they stay there, if not, they can move back down the next week.

Come on out and join us at Universal City for Tuesday Night singles. Three divisions, open, am and rec. Josh Barling moves up to Open this week, and Jerrod Votion moves up to Am. If they cash, they stay, if not, they can move back down.

On Singles Night, the top 5 players in each division get league points added to their overall total to determine the final standings at the end of the league. The top three in Am and Open will get trophies, and the top 10 will get a special award. The points on Tuesdays are awarded as 1st: 5, 2nd: 4, 3rd: 3, 4th: 4, and 5th: 1. These are not merchandise points, just league points.

4 of the 5 new holes have the permanent baskets in, tee boxes should start to go in today.

Wayne Atkinson takes Open with 5 under par. John Arick takes Am with 1 under par, and Blake Greer takes Rec with 17 over. John will move up a division next week. Am/Rec played a shorter "C' hole until the days get longer.

I had 9 birdies and only shot -1. Those 6's and 5's are killing me!!

Latest request from the higher authority here in L.O. If you have any used, stable putters and drivers to donate for the civ./mil. tournament, then the "new" golfers can obtain them for a small, but generous donation of cash. The $$ would then be applied to new baskets. Any thoughts on this?

Sorry Chris, but the PDGA states that: Recreational - to all amateurs of all ages with a rating <875. The name change a couple of years ago was the same intent as the change of letting PROS play in the AMATEUR divisions this past year. It allows for a player to play where he feels comfortable and the ability to compete against people of his or her skill level.

I also know that the definition of the recerational player also states 'beginner' or as you said 'newbie' but the difinition of the PRO player says "accepted money'. And even though this is not a PDGA sponsored event, you do state that ALL PDGA rules apply.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander, or what is good for the PROS is good for the RECREATIONAL player.

Before anybody starts anything, I am not playing in the rec division and I haven't in awhile... I was only taking up for a brother disc golfer...Dave :D:D

The Outback Steakhouse at the Forum will again be serving lunch to us all during the TX10 in Live Oak.

I can not express my thanks enough to Outback Steakhouse and the owner Mark for their continued support of our events and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

The awesome lunch will be a $5 donation to the LAF. 100% of this money gets donated to the LAF.

In addition to this all players will recieve a free "Bloomin Onion" for their next visit to the restaurant.

Please show your support to the Outback Steakhouse at the Forum (next to the course) on the Saturday night after the event. Lets show up in force to support one of our great sponsors.

As always I will be there and available for menu and language translations. :D

I have no problems with people "playing" in the "recreational" division. Recreation, noun: activity that refreshes and recreates; activity that renews your health and spirits by enjoyment and relaxation. I don't see "compete for other peoples money", and play down a division in order to take advantage of new players who we are supposed to encourage not discourage.

I made a judgment call, recreation division will play for trophies and a players package at LOSO. $15 entry fee guarantees we will barely break even on rec players. I hope this encourages more new people to play, and encourages our 2 to 5 year players to play intermediate. This sport will only grow from the bottum up, not the other way around.

If this effort fails, oh well!

Thanks Paul. I am actually very aware of all the rules and regulations of the PDGA. For the last few months I have been on the PDGA Competition Committee doing lots of work to benefit the entire sport from within.

No worries either way. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Brian,

I think that the decision that you made was great, it will not only benefit the recreation division but also benifit the whole PDGA ratings based divisions. I just have a problem with someone saying that you cannot play in a certain division when the ratings specifically state the opposite. And I do not totally disagree with the meaning behind what Chris said, and I do support what he does for the game of disc golf, but...

This is the first sport that I have ever played in where the amateur divisions win "merchandise". In all the years that I played tennis in the USTA, local, state, and national competitional tournaments, the only thing that I played for was a trophy and bragging rights to be called the defending champion the next year. And in all of the tennis tournaments that I ran while I was a coach or the local pro, I never ever thought of having merchandise for the winners. I did have contest such as 'fastest serve', most 'accurate' shot placements etc for prizes...alot like what we call CTP's.

I wouldn't mind seeing the trophy only in all amateur divisions, but then again, I have gotten spoiled to the merchandise...when I place. :D:D

Maybe others will follow your example. I think it is great. I hope this effort doesn't fail.

By the way...Happy Birthday.

Apr 23 2005, 02:08 AM
OK ONE MORE TIME...am's play for plastic at a higher entry fee...and get paid in retail...thus creating a profit margin and a reason to run an event or put the money towards a charity or buy new baskets for the course or sponsor other events or add to the pro payout or buy everyone lunch or in the case of some events all of the above...and I am glad we do not follow the "tennis" way :o

Apr 23 2005, 11:20 AM
I suppose I distinguish between amatuer and recreational. I think amateurs should compete, and I have no problem with them winning plastic, as you say it adds to the margin. We have intermediate and advanced and adv masters for that. I think recreational should play for fun, learn what it is to play in a tournament, be taught the rules, learn etiquette, etc. If I had my way there would be two levels of ratings based intermediate divisions, Int 1, and Int 2, and rec would be non-ratings based and trophy only. We have too many people afraid to play in tournaments because they feel like they are throwing away their money to baggers. I'm giving ams a choice, come have fun, possibly win a trophy, get equal value in return for your $$, or step up, pay a little more and compete your heart out, and risk donating. There is room for both, right?

P.S. I'm still an am at heart! But I choose to compete, not recreate at tournaments. Tournament: noun, A series of contests in which a number of contestants compete and the one that prevails through the final round or that finishes with the best record is declared the winner. I couldn't find recreate in there!

I was just explaining why...but,I do not agree with the system...I think all non-pro's should play for tropies only...the term "payout" says it all...turning plastic into cash is easy...but the sport is running off this idea at this time and creates many more goods than bads

Money is not the only thing in life. Enjoy what you have right in front of you. A great woman once told me " you pays your money and you takes your chances". Yea, it's fun to win but you'll have alot more fun if you learn how to play the game and beat a player that has tought you the dos and don'ts. Then and only then will your defeat be more acceptable and less dissappointing when you can understand just why and what mistakes or bad decisions you made during your round. Most important if all else fails we must remember that 7 days without laughter makes one weak! ;)

Apr 24 2005, 01:07 PM
Great call Brian , I think and who cares what I think ,Trorhy and a players package are great Incentives for the casual Golfer to start Playing Events Does the casual golfer even Know what a bagger is .Not unless we tell him .I think some of the ways we handle the new player will determine if they stick around and play more events .Not all Golfers are as obsessed with playing as we are I remember when I played my first event a Vpo in arlington .I asked the Question I have been playing for a year but never played any events ,Where should I play ?the answer givin to me was .Not what kinda scores do you shoot but Dont play int There are a bunch of baggers there play rec where vyou can win some plastic.Although I am glad I got the advice at the time I think it sends the wrong message right from the start .anyway Just my thoughts

I have been reading everyone's thoughts lately, and am pleased to see the true meaning(s)/interpretations of "Recreation" level disc golf. In June, we all have an ideal opportunity to teach, promote and encourage the game to approx. 100 newbies. This sport has taken flight quickly around here, and I believe we should do all we can to bring new players in and keep them involved by encouraging them to play in the Rec. or even Novice divisions of tournaments. I do not agree with the PDGA's view of what is and isn't Rec. tournament division rankings. Heck, according to them, I should be playing Rec. with my not-so-proud 700 something ranking, but I won't. These are my thoughts, hope they help.

Paul Taylor

I agree, that I do not agree with the PDGA on what is or isn't considered a RECREATION rating, but I also do not agree with the PDGA in letting the PROS play in the AM divisions. If the PDGA allows it for PROS then it allows it for AMS in the rec division.

I also am one who will not play in the REC division, but God help the TD who is running a PDGA sanctioned event and does not allow me or someone else who has that rating not to play in that division.

Since AMS who play down a division are called 'baggers', should a new name be set forth for PROS who play down...such a 'wusses'. :o  :p

ps..this has nothing to do with Brian or Chris, I support them whole-heartedly as well as most TD's...in fact, I have only had one complaint about a TD and we talked that out and both came to the conclusion that it could have been handled differently, and we did it in private, not on a public stage.

Apr 24 2005, 07:38 PM
but God help the TD who is running a PDGA sanctioned event and does not allow me or someone else who has that rating not to play in that division.

Paul, I don't really care who plays recreational, especially if we make it non-ratings based. Heck, I wouldn't mind playing recreational once in a while at big tourneys where I know I'm going to get trounced by the big dogs. If I was to win a trophy in rec, I'd be proud, but probably pass it down, but at least I didn't just give my money away.

So you want to play rec, (not you Paul), bring it on, I say, I hope we get 50 recs! Just don't expect to walk away with a bag full of plastic at someone else's expense!

mitchjustice

jimbo1944
Apr 25 2005, 02:31 AM
Well let me throw my opinion out there as well. I agree with Brian in that I wish or would like to see another division between Rec and Int. I love to play the game and I also like to be able to compete. I can compete in Rec but I can't compete in Int. I have played Int before and will probably play it again depending on the field and the course and what is available. When I first started playing tournaments I did not expect to win or place. I started out playing casual and learning the game and then I started playing in tournaments and players helped me improve my game. Now I consider myself the official instructor for the Rec division. That's why I play there or else they wouldn't have any one to teach them right from wrong. :D

What are you going to use as criterion<sp> for moving people up? I have a horrible rating but won't play rec as I agree rec should be introducing people to the sport and the rules. And I have 4 more valks, I would like to get rid of.
I think I will give one to the LOLOs for their night.

Well it just goes to show you that Round Rock gets the money and LIVE OAK gets the plastic and the basket :o:D

Where oh where have you gone? How are you doing? Thought you and what's his name (Randall) would be out this last weekend. Missed you. Come by and see us sometime.

May 02 2005, 11:44 AM
We still have a little pruning to do, but for the most part the hole is done. Hopefully, the tee box and basket will be put in this week.

We will be out again this Saturday at Universal City to clean up the long hole "C". We will widen the fairway, and clean up another 30 feet perimeter around the basket. This should help the hole play better and not take so many 6's, 7's and 8's out of us!

We'll start at 9am if you can make it!

What a great weekend in Live Oak. What started off as a cold and windy day (no rain) turned into a beautiful Spring day with 100 disc golfers, great food, great fun and games and some great help. We also had 13 ladies out of that 100.

Thanks to everyone that made the trip and trusted my positive attitude about the weather. You should know to trust me by now.

I have many people to thank for this weekend which was the most enjoyable Texas 10 I have done in the 43 I have done in the last four plus years.

The City of Live Oak was awesome as usual and presented us all with a beautiful course and park. This place keeps getting better. Thanks.

Thanks to Outback Steakhouse at the Forum for donating all the food at lunch which alone raised $430 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Many of us also went to eat there after the event and we had a great time. Thanks for supporting them by going Saturday night.

Thanks to Brian Schmidt, James Pellman, Paul Taylor and my two special helpers for all the help and support this weekend. You all made for a very smooth and enjoyable event.

There were no aces on Saturday so that ace pot will carry over to the Twin Parks event on May 21.

I will email Gary the results today but for now here they are. Congratulations to Laura Karshis for her first Texas 10 win and to Jim Yount for his Rec Men's win. Good job Mark Vargas for taking the Pro Men's title. Live Oak played well this weekend.

Thanks again.

Actually, I thought about moving up this year, but after looking at my last 17 PDGA sanctioned tournaments and seeing that I would have finished last in 7 of them and in the bottom 5 on another 7 of them, the prospects didn't look too good. The other 3 were short tees, so it was hard to determine where I would have finished. Of course there was the probability of getting or should I say having to play on the same card as you on at least the last round and that made my mind up for me. :DWelcome back. :D

All you guffers and golfers be on the lookout for rattlers on the course. Today, an Animal Control Officer for the City was bitten by one near #11a. We will continue to mow further and further out to allow for the errant shot(see my game), but a piece of plastic is just not as important as your health. You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

May 03 2005, 04:33 AM
....climbs on top of soapbox.....

97% of people who get bit by a venomous snake are bitten because they were either trying to capture or kill the animal. That simply means if you see one, leave it alone. It in turn will leave you alone. I've worked with hundreds of venomous snakes and I have never seen one be aggressive. Defensive yes, aggressive no. Leave them alone, please.

....steps down off of soapbox....

25 players enjoy a beautiful evening at Universal City. We played all of the new holes last night, and Keith Baker eclipsed the previous record of 46 by Mark "Texas 10" Vargas, by shooting 9 under par 45 with 12 birdies and 3 bogies. Yee haw!

Josh Barling once again takes am, and will step up to Open next week.

Full results at:
http://home.grandecom.net/~bschmidt/Minis.html

P.S. We will have another cleanup day at UC Saturday at 9am to widen hole "C".

Ladies Night will be taking place as usual tonight at Live Oak, hole 28 at 5:45. Bring your bags and good attitudes.

Also we will be having Ladies Night once a month at Universal City. Brian Schmidt and crew have done wonders with the new holes and the course is really looking good. I would love for the Ladies to experience Universal City as well as Live Oak. This should help us learn a different course and develope different skills and shots.

See you tonight!!!!!

Yet another tough guy in the 97% category. I'm thinking he probably won't do that again. It really is amazing how often that happens. A guy gets bit trying to capture or kill a snake just so it won't bite anyone. Kind of a circular type thing there. If he wouldn't have bothered it in the first place ............ well, you know. Any word on how the guy is doing? I hope he doesn't lose any fingers. One of my pet store owners only has one thumb thanks to a really bad Prairie Rattler bite. I call him Stubby. He doesn't love that. :) Just for grins you should try throwing a disc without your thumb. I imagine that it would probably look something like Petey Pete's drives. ;)
