Sorry Nelle, I have to agree with Gatorput(k) on this one. I think it will hurt the new players, and I don't mean Dave. If a person who has only been playing a couple of weeks or months, then they would be donating to the advance or pro player. Don't get me wrong, I like the skins format and it was a blast at the Icebowl, but I don't think that it is format to play for a league that has had its share of newbies come out for the first time to play.

The person that I think of, and this is just an example, is Doug. When he first started coming to league nights he was basically new to the game. He was not consistant, he didn't know what each disc would do, he got frustrated easily and he at one point was not going to come out again. He has come along ways in a short time and now I think he would be good at playing skins, but when he first started he would have quit after the first night if we were playing skins and he had to compete against Brian or Mark

Maybe a skins format once a month would be good, but not every week.

Here is my suggestion and it might be too much trouble. Do two divisions for stroke play and after three weeks, rank the players as you do the 2nd, 3rd and final rounds of a tourney according to their points. Now every week as people sign-up they are placed on the appropriate card according to their rank. People move up or down according to how they did the past week or if they they don't come and play that week. They are re-ranked each week. Brian has a list of the points each week, so all that has to be done is go to the list and go from there. I know this has its problems as does other formats but it is just a suggestion.

To me, It really does not matter which format we play, I can biotcch and complain with the best of them. :D And I also don't mind taking Dave's, Jody's, Bills and even Skeet's money. :o

ps...thanks Brian for all that you do. :D

man i dont care what we play as long as we get to play. i have been dieing for some comp. skins, stoke, doubles i dont care. i do like what disc coach was saying about ranking us. thats a good idea. or even a handicaped league would be kinda neat. any way cant wait for league to started and see how the off season complemented every ones game. see every one soon.

Nothing about my post is about ATTITUDE. I'm just TRYING to see another side of this. I like the idea of SKINS! But just try, and I mean TRY to think back to when YOU first picked up a disc. Would you play skins? I wouldn't...Not until I got some rounds under my belt. (once again I said "BEGINNING GOLFER")
(what about my post, conveys my attitude? I was just THINKING)

I've lost to alot of people who where the worst sports in the world. I am glad that Brian is even running one thing a week, much less two. So if he wants to do skins, lets do it. Its not forever, its a couple of months.Let try new things. You dont want to play then dont play skins, play doubles during the week or the doubles mini on Saturday, or how about the singles mini on Sunday.

And yes Jody I am saying if you have a bad attitude you will lose. I do remember when I came out there and couldn't play for crap, but I didnt complain about not getting strokes or better people beating me all the time, or the fact that I had to play with guys who bag in rec and int forever. I am not saying I am all that at all, but I have a positive attitude about my game and it has helped me. Everyone can be beaten, its the course you should worry about not the other people.

I don't know if it is bickering or not, but I do believe Brian wanted input and I think that is what Jody was giving. I have played when I knew that I didn't have a chance to win and donated my money as some would say. It can be called an attitude, but in fact it is a realization of how well you can play and match up against someone else. I don't mind in certain situations to donate my money, but I don't know if I would be willing to do it for a whole league. So, maybe I will be one of those playing the game by myself.

Nelle 18131
Mar 10 2005, 01:48 PM
I was not trying to be mean, I know it sounded that way. I have always said that attitude has a lot to do with playing well. I am sorry if it made Jody mad, really. But if you already think you will lose, or donate, then you will for sure. Maybe if you think about it in a positive way, then positive things would come from it. Jody's original post was him saying he was going to donate, and kind of insinuating (sp?) something wasnt fair. I think Jody and I play about the same, sometimes good, sometimes bad but I dont feel like I would be donating my money. I feel more like I will be challenged to play better and have to park shots and make putts. There are only a few holes out there that might not be as easy for the weaker players (myself included) but there are plenty of holes in Live Oak that anyone could get a skin on. No one is saying that anyone has to play by themselves, there are two dubs minis and a singles and lots of casual play. I value everyones opinion and I am sorry if I sounded or acted ugly. I just hate to see good players limit there ability by a negative attitude.

jimbo1944
Mar 10 2005, 02:18 PM
I understand what you are trying to say and I guess I felt you came across kind of heavy on him and it kind of bothers me when someone says if you don't like it then don't play. I think if everyones thought can get expressed and it can be worked out all the better for the game. I didn't agree with Vinnie and how he didn't have Rec and I expressed my feelings and that was that. I know this year if I want to play, I will have to play Int. If Brian decides to go with skins, then I will have to make that decision on whether to play or not. I will make my ideas and feelings known. I know this much, you can call it a bad attitude or what ever, if I get on a card with Mark, Brian or someone of their caliber, I don't expect to come out ahead. I have played skins with Mark before because I enjoy playing with Mark even though I didn't expect to win I still tried my best.
The one difference about the Ice Bowl skins and the reason I feel it worked better is everyone was somewhat ranked on the card based on previous play. I feel something like that would work.
I know it works for RR because all they have there is Pros. Right, Vinnie.

Mad? Me? Nah.... I only get mad when I lose to Dave. :DI personally will play skins on Tuesday. I just think back to when I started and skins would scare the crapola outta of me. Plus it sucks when you are out on the course to play and there are some MONEY players out there doing everything in their power to get you to play skins with them, or want you to play PRO at a mini so they can just take your money. And they hound on you for not "stepping up", and they love to call you "bagger." So sometimes when I hear about skins, I kinda drag my feet. Yah know? But organinzed skins in a league would be great for player with some disc golf expierence. Plus I would love the chance to steal some of those skins from the Vargas', Schmidt's, and Campos' of Live Oak. :D:D:D:D:D
I JUST WANT TO PLAY....I don't care how, when, or why.

I like the skins idea. My opinion to the new player. No, skins isn't always for everyone, but there is always that chance... Use this league time as a clinic. Take the time to develop your game, set your own pace and become a teammate amongst some of the top players in the state. Live Oak is a is a team of pride and competition and that's why we have so much hard love, but you'll get used to it.

Here comes the season, Let' get focused!! The tourist are coming. :D

Mar 11 2005, 12:42 AM
This is good feedback on the skins. Thanks. One of the things RR does differently than what I was proposing was to card up the skins leaders each week. So the top 4 skins leaders play each other, and so on. This sort of goes with what Jim was saying... playing against people of possibly similar skill level. The only reason I wanted to avoid that was then you may end up playing with the same people week in and week out. I like to play with everyone and have it mixed up, so I suggested random draw cards.

The problem with Paul's idea on handicapping is that we do not get enough people to consistently play week in and week out, plus we play a minimum of four different formats at the courses, so it could take weeks to establish any kind of handicap system.

I don't want to lose anyone that wants to play because they think they may be donating to me or others. If I was in DG for the money I wouldn't be playing DG!

My concern with a two division singles league is the potential for bagging that occurs. (read Dave :D). Maybe what I need is a three division league, Open, Am, and Rec, and then figure out a system to force the Rec player to move to Am. Maybe if you win Rec one week, you have to play Am the next time you show up. If you don't cash in Am, you can move back to Rec until you win it again? Maybe the same would work for Am, if you win Am, you have to play open the next time you show up. If you don't cash in Open, you can move back down to Am. At the very least this would give others a chance to win the division if someone is dominating it (read Dave )

Keep the thoughts coming, it's helping me!

Neal Dambra did this last year at Bass minis. Turnout was small because it was at Bass, but overall people liked this idea. The key is to have everyone commit to a division at the beginning, so Dave (/msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif) doesn't start in Rec and play all 3 divisions several times over the season.

It's time for the annual "don't aim for the civilian" announcement. Now that spring has sprung and everyone is enjoying the great outdoors, please remember that if there is a group of people on the fairway, playing cards on a tee box, or just playing dodge ball in and around the baskets, to, in a nice, calm yet positive manner, ask that they give you a chance to play through. If they (only soocer/baseball)refuse, please do not hesitate to call me at 789-5635.

Helpful hint #152 (a), sub section iii, do not throw at the people on the course. For example, had a group today on 28, trying to figure out how they can throw in, over and around the group of parents and kids in the channel. They seemed somewhat :cool::cool:upset that they could not finish their round. I suggested creating an alternate finishing hole, which they obliged.

You all have been great ambassadors for the sport and our park, so please continue educating the other golfers who are new to the course.

we had a great day for a mini sunday morning. we had 12 players come join us. 9 competed in the pro division. brian & tracy tied with -3. next was jake and shawn with -2. in the amatuer we had 4 competing. 3 guys & 1 woman. josh b took it with -4 andrew took second with +4. i was glad to see a woman join us on sunday. 2 more and they could of had their own division. maybe in the near future. the ace pot built up to $107. then brian hit a ace (off a tree) on one of the temporary holes. i hope to see everybody out next sunday.

Ladies Day was a success. I read Brians original post wrong and moved the ladies day to 10:00 so we could help. (I thought he said it was at 2:00) It was a success because we were able to help out in UC.

While waiting for the Ladies at Live Oak I was suprised to see a parking lot full of cars that I recognized. I looked around and saw ATLEAST 4 cards of players.

I dont think LIVE OAK should be having a mini when there is work to be done at UC. I am not blaming anyone in particular, but we should all unite and get these holes in, then we can ALL play the minis.

I am sure Brian, Tree Trimmers and the rest of the people out there could find something better to do with their Saturday then clean up a hole for EVERYONE to play.

Dont get me wrong, I realize that people have family obligations and personal reasons, but when there is a full fledged mini being run and a very small work crew at the work day, something is not right.

IT IS EMBARRASSING THAT WE CANNOT COME TOGETHER AS A CLUB FOR A WORK DAY!!!

When you hear that call, LIIVVEEE OOOAAAKKK, do you really deserve it?

I will hold my head high and say I wanna help disc golf around the area. Other people will fill are shoes sooner or later!
And it is up to us to provide nice parks and great attitudes. I know alot of bad attitude golfer's! But I know more good attitude discer's.
We have to be mature about this and not side with one city or the other. If you wanna get deep about this we really are one Big Family in God's eyes!
You can't avoid the TRUTH!

P.s. I know I havn't made a SAT. @ UC yet....I'll make an appearance soon. Or I will give away my 2001 CE roc at the Player's party at the end of the season

Mar 29 2005, 01:02 AM
Thanks Rich for running the mini. I enjoyed playing and appreciate you stepping up to run it even when there are other things you'd like to be doing on your Saturdays.

As for volunteering for work days out at UC there certainly shouldn't be ANY finger-pointing. Everyone has their reasons/excuses for not going, but the fact of the matter is that people are either going to help or not going to help. You can't make them! I've made more than one trip out to UC to put in long afternoons of clearing out fairways and I barely make it to any of the leagues. Though the time I've put in is not as much as some, it's certainly more than most. If getting it done and competing for volunteers or players is an issue maybe the work days can be moved to SUNDAYS! That way there is no conflict. Or spread them out. I know there is a real push to get these in before the league starts, but it seems like if there is not a major tourney going on then there is a work day scheduled. I appreciate the Shawns and Larrys and Tracys and Brians that have that kind of dedication and determination, but I don't even work that often on my own yard! I'm not trying to be combative on the subject, I just feel that people are getting too serious about this. LLLLLLLLLIIIIVVE OOAAKK! and uc

Mar 29 2005, 01:05 AM
P.S. Lopar, I'm looking forward to the tourney this year. Maybe this time I'll actually have a military golfer! ;)

Mar 29 2005, 08:17 AM
I've posted this before. We can't do work days on Sundays because UC does not want to pay double time wages to the chipper guy. We're almost done anyway. If this was RR, everyone would be helping. And what boundaries are we talking about. I thought we were an alliance, not UC vs. Live Oak. I have done as much or more for Live Oak as I have done for UC. I even got an award from the city council for my work at Live Oak. To me it's just disc golf and doing what I can do further the sport. I understand personal obligations, jobs, etc. What I can't understand is me calling people to let them know about the work day, or posting it here, and they go play a mini anyway. Do you think I'd rather be working or playing? Anyway, it does not inspire those who work there butts off to hear about a mini going on 3 miles away. Maybe I have a different attitude about this game than you youngsters. I think we should be all about loyalty to each other and the courses. You keep asking me to start a club, but why should I when me and one or two others will do all the work and you'll just show up to play. I'm having second thoughts about the league too. Why should I drive 60 miles round trip, make cards, deal with attitudes, try and keep good disc stock and provide a cool venue to play DG when you guys can't even donate 3 hours to help put in some new holes. Not every city is going to do all the work for you like Live Oak does, ask anyone on this board. You are forunate to have them, and what do I hear, hey when is 15A going to be in. If you're that concerned go help them put it in. Nah, that would be an inconvenience.

wheresdave
Mar 29 2005, 09:46 AM
**** Brian you hit hard but it all true. We want to talk like an alliance but not walk like one with the exception of a few. Lets all step up and make it happen at UC. :D

jimbo1944
Mar 29 2005, 10:17 AM
I know Brian realizes that we have other obligations and things we have to do around our own homes. However, I don't see that as the problem. We have abled bodied players going to a mini when they know what is trying to be done at UC. I didn't go to the work day because of what it did to my back the last time I went. I also didn't go to the mini because I didn't feel it would be right to go there if I couldn't go to help work. Whenever there is something like this going on to help us all, we all should do our best to support it if at all possible. I know Brian is concerned about starting a club, but maybe if we were a club we could get things done better as a unit, I don't know. Right now I feel we are just a bunch of disc golfers with no direction or unity. If we were a club there would be more responsibility spread among the players and have more of a feeling of ownership. Just thinking out loud. Have a great day.

Is all this is....get over it.
From my experince....IT is hard to pull everyone together to get a project done. But I would like to bring another PROspective to the project. The job at hand has a ending point and when that point is reached. There is plenty of time for minis. If all hands are on the deck, the end comes faster and you can run minis all weekend.

I want to get something straight though, I do appreciate Rich running the Live Oak minis. I am glad to see that they have grown, and I know Rich has plenty of things he could be doing every Saturday. It takes a lot for anyone to organize and take time out of their own life to do something for others to enjoy.

Not to change the subject, (this is the liveliest this thread has been in a long time) but is there going to be a mando on the short hole with the small opening and the basket to the right. Some are already calling it a clown's mouth. I think (how ever much my oppinion is worth) that is a great idea with a mando being the big tree on the right. Your t-boxes are now complete. However, 15c has already been altered by some @#^* twit. A vital branch on the Mesquite tree was ripped off a few days ago. If you all see new players, please encourage them to respect the course. If you witness any vandalism to include skaters, call me asap.

btw, Jody, I take it as a compliment that you are struggling with 15b!

jimbo1944
Mar 29 2005, 05:02 PM
How are the new holes numbered? I have been considering the one nearest 15 as 15A, then the long one as 15B and then the clown's mouth as 15C.
By the way, would riding your skate board off the top cement at 16 onto someones disc and enjoying it so much you try it again be considered vandalism or just stupidity?

Joe
Mar 29 2005, 05:18 PM
For the time being, you are correct about the 15a,b, and c. I have been trying to figure out the new layout for numbering and designating each course. What should we call each course?
Per the ignorance of the skaters, they are just lost causes, probably to no fault of their own. When do you plan on playing in the evening again? I would love to stake out the situation, or better yet, play as an undercover discgolfer.

jimbo1944
Mar 29 2005, 05:41 PM
Probably won't play again til Wednesday. Usually get out there about 4:15.
I think you have 36 holes there now, however when they have a tournament they usually don't play hole 13. That leaves 35 holes. Hows that for subtraction. I can see playing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 11A, 11B, 12, 14, 15, 15A, 15B, and 15C for the lower course. That leaves 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, A, B, C, D, 24, 25, 26, 27, and 28, one short on the top course which could be made up with a temp hole. Maybe you could have a contest to name the two courses. Yesterday we played 1, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 11A, 11B, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15A, 15B, 15C, 16, 27, 28 for 18 holes. There are all kinds of fun combinations now to play.

Joe
Mar 29 2005, 05:59 PM
That's a good start YODA. Don't forget, that when the lake/dam project is done, then we get 6, 6e and possibly 7 back. I think for the grand prize winner of the course naming contest, we should give him/her a free year of green fees for playing here.

jimbo1944
Mar 29 2005, 06:09 PM
You know, I almost suggested that myself, but I didn't want to take that much income away from Live Oak City. :DYes, I had thought of the other holes coming back but I wasn't sure when or how many. Lots to think about. Great huh.

jimbo1944

Sounds like you will need Plan A, Plan B, etc. depending on the future and how each hole will be added in time, if you know what I mean. :)

You guy's are gonna have green fees? How is that going to work or did I miss a simple joke. Can't wait to make it to Live Oak to play the new layout. Maybe I can make it out on the second or fourth weekend of April. Yoda my sixteen yearold daughter needs putting lessons. I already have her driving pretty well.

Hey! don't bring me into all this, I help out whenever needed because I want to be part of this great disc golf club.

Plus when I start playing the mini's at U.C. I can have an advantage over all that didn't get to see these holes get created. :D j/k

I just want to play Disc Golf and I will do whatever it takes to play!! :)

Mar 30 2005, 12:48 PM
We will finish the 4th new hole this Saturday at 9am. It may take about 2 hours total to finish it up, as we are 2/3 complete with it. If you can't make this one, no problem, hold on, because the last hole will take everyone's help.

Look, the bottom line is we need to support disc golf in this area period... not Live Oak, not UC, not New Braunfels, not San Antonio. The more courses we have in this area, the more people will be attracted to play. Growth is good. Anything I can do to help DG in this area, I'll be there, matters not where there is. RR may be called RR but they support DG in Georgetown, Cat Hollow, Lago Vista, etc. We may name ourselves Live Oak DGA, and are proud of that, but we need to grow beyond Live Oak. When we can get players to be less course centric, and more LODGA centric, then I think we can put a great club together. Be there for the sport you love, give something of yourself to the cause and you will be rewarded with excellent Karma. I have had two aces the last two weeks, and I know it's because I busted my tail helping put in new holes. Work at UC, get Aces!

jimbo1944
Mar 30 2005, 12:58 PM
LOPAR, not sure, depends on where we start. Normally, we would get there about 5-5:30. Also depends on how many end up in the group.

Anyone from Live Oak going to the Ball Golf Disc Golf Challenge in Austin 4-15? Chris Himing is running it and I would love to send some support. I know we all cant go, but lets see what we can do on getting a two some up there. The cost is $150 per person. Can anyone get some corporate sponsorship? Hey everyone, I'm in Norfolk, Virginia this week. Just got back from Virginia Beach... nice! I'm waiting on word from the property owner on whether we will have a work day Saturday. If you don't see it posted here by Thursday evening, then no work day!

Thanks Rich for the support, I hope we can do it this weekend, I'm ready to be done with tree trimming! See everyone soon, and don't forget the first mini starts Tuesday, April 11 at Universal City, sign up by 5:45 PM.

Brian wanted me to tell yall that there will not be a work day this Saturday. Have fun at the mini.

The Ladies of Live Oak will be introducing disc golf to the Austin chapter of the Texas Outdoor Womens Network. All women are invited. There will be CTP prizes and lots of fun!!! We will be at Zilker Park in Austin at 10:00am to have a fun, relaxing day. Email me at discichick@yahoo.com if you are interested in going and/or carpooling.

While we are in the Austin area we will be taking part in a trash clean up at Cat Hollow. We will only be able to help for about 30 or 45 minutes but would like to give back to the course that did so much for the women this past weekend.
Oh and dont forget to bring your bags and good attitudes!! ;)
