We are now three days in to the endurance contest that is the 2014 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships presented by Keen. Dozens of competitors have graced the lead and/or chase cards with their presence at this point. However, only a select few have played with the tenacity and mental fortitude required to remain in the hunt for the title after facing multiple rounds against the toughest competition on some of Oregon’s most difficult courses.

If you were lucky enough to catch DiscGolfPlanet’s live coverage of the battle taking place in the Masters division this afternoon at Blue Lake Park, you would have seen some of the most well-known names in the history of disc golf fighting tooth and nail for each and every stroke on every hole. The round started out with 13X World Champion Ken Climo #4297 tied for the lead with 3X World Champion Barry Schultz #6840. A few strokes behind them were Patrick Brown #25713 and Jay “Yeti” Reading #15864, both of which were managing their own campaign to gain ground on the two leaders and on each other.

One of the major turning points of the round was on Blue Lake’s hole #7, a par five with an island green guarded by a fence and a basket placed on top of a small but very steep hill. Patrick Brown played the hole perfectly and was the only one of the four men to finish it with a birdie four. Climo and Reading were able to save par but the same story wouldn’t be told for Schultz. He would finish the hole with an 8, a triple bogey, giving Climo a nice cushion of his lead.

Climo and Schultz traded strokes throughout the day. When it was all said and done, The Champ would make his putt on hole 18 to finish the day with two strokes on Schultz. The gap between second place and third is much more significant, as Patrick Brown remains down by eight to Schultz, with Reading right on his heels. Jonathan Baldwin #18114 can’t be counted out either, as he is just two strokes away from making the lead card going into the final full two rounds at McCormick Park tomorrow.

The Open and Open Women’s divisions are just as close as they were a few days ago and equally as close as we’ve all predicted and expected them to be. There’s simply too much talent in the competition for any single player to have pulled away from the field to a position where they have a comfortable lead just yet. And it may never get to that point. On behalf of the fans of disc golf, I’ll say with confidence that the closer the scores get to each other, the better.

Catrina Allen #44184 is the current leader in Open Women once again, but not by much. She will face the defending world champion, Paige Pierce #29190, for two rounds tomorrow at Milo McIver State Park with a one throw difference separating them to start the morning. They’ll be joined by Ragna Bygde #8559 and Ohn Scoggins #48976.

After two days of near-perfect disc golf, Paul Ulibarri #27171 finally carded a few bogeys. As odd as that is to say, it’s true. Because the field in the Open division is so close it also meant he would lose his spot at the top of the leaderboard. He’s now in 2nd place, three off the current leader Ricky Wysocki #38008. Paul McBeth #27523, still very much in the hunt for the three-peat, is currently in third place with 3X World Champion Nate Doss #11794 one throw back. McBeth shot the hot round on Milo East today, turning in a score of 10 under par that included the ace below on the 197’ hole 4.

Tomorrow is the last full day of disc golf before the dreaded cuts to the field are made, ending the tournament for a large majority of the competitors.
