2013 National Senior Games

2013 National Senior Games

Thursday, January 17, 2013 - 11:41

Disc golf will be included in this year’s National Senior Games to be held in Cleveland, OH. While disc golf has been included in a number of state level events, this is the first inclusion for our sport in a major national event.

Competition begins on July 19 and runs through August 1. The specific dates of the disc golf competition will be July 20-21. The format will include four rounds over two days played on two courses.

The National Senior Games (previously called the Senior Olympics) were created in 1985 as a multi-sport opportunity for senior athletes over 50 years old. The first event had 14 sports and 2,500 athletes. The 2013 games are expected to include a projected 16,000 athletes competing in 19 different sports. If this goal is met the 2013 games will be the largest ever.  Disc golf will be a demonstration sport in this year’s games with the intention of being a full-fledged sport in 2015 in Minneapolis.

For many sports there is a pro/amateur distinction, but for these games all disc golf participants will be treated as amateurs unless they receive the majority of their annual income from disc golf. Golfers will compete by gender and in 5 year age related tiers (50-54, 55-59, 60-64, etc.).

The 2013 games staff are also providing an opportunity for athletes in all of the other sports to be exposed to disc golf in the Athlete Village where putting opportunities, as well as, clinics and demonstrations will be available.

For more information on participating in the 2013 Games and to register go to www.nsga.com. The 2013 Games will also be working with the PDGA to provide a series of promotional and marketing possibilities to introduce our sport to the full range of athlete participants at these games.

In addition to the website more information about these games and PDGA's participation can be obtained from PDGA Senior Committee Chair, Bill Griffith ([email protected]) and PDGA Tour Manager, Andrew Sweeton ([email protected]).
