USADGC - Day 1

Win this TROPHY for your shining moment at the USADGC.
Drew Miller (KY) leads with an unofficial 1020 rated 56 followed by Jason Anderson (MN), David Wiggins Jr (NC) and Robert Martinek (ON) at 57. It was a great day in the mid-70s with little wind until later in the afternoon.
Threats of thunderstorms seen on the Doppler radar just after the last group teed off at 1:30, dissipated with only a few sprinkles on and off for an hour.
Each year, the Kensington Park staff creates a grass sculpture seen in the photo below. Jake Schramm (MN) is teeing on 1 toward the sculpture with the basket 477 feet away just barely seen where the cut grass line meets the woods in the center of the photo.
Hole 6 at 594 is always tough especially for lefties. Dave Milewski (MI) threads the needle for his upshot thru the bushes and branches that creep ever so closer together each year. It's been so wet this spring in this part of Michigan that everything has been growing fast and lush all over the park
It's tough to land your drive clean on 6. Many have to take an unusual stance for their second toss or maybe just pitch out. Some can at least get near the base of the hill where the basket is perched like Kris Kapitan (MN) who made this touchy uphill putt to save 4.
Spotters of all shapes and sizes "chip" in to help find discs. Thanks to the volunteers who make this event a special time for our best amateurs each year.
Yes, David Wiggin Jr is here. Yes, he is the top rated player. And yes, everyone wants to see him crush some drives including me. Hole 13 is 516 feet uphill and tucked to the left. We saw a handful of players... okay one, get to the top during doubles yesterday. David did reach the top but was far right and didn't have a great chance for the rare deuce here.
Robert Pauly (CA) saves 3 on 14 which is one of those deuces you'd really like to get. I mean c'mon, it's a "simple" downhill righty hyzer at 375. Based on feedback from the spotters who could count the number of birdies on their hole today on one hand, it does sound like there at least were more birdies on 14 today than most of the other reachable holes off the tee.
Zak Fortuna takes a run for a 2 on hole 15. Well, it's almost a 300 ft run. But it seems like players take longer runs on Toboggan than many courses because the birdie chances are few and far between. Wiggins briefly looked at the sneaky hyzer bomb route that can get you to the path you can see cutting across the fairway on this 90 degree 567 ft dogleg right. Maybe not at this tournament, but I would guess if this course were close to his home, David would have it dialed in.
Noah Rodriguez nailed his drive on 16 at 354 (which is tucked behind a nice, big disc-eating cedar tree). In fact, the disc actually stuck in the ground. However, the swirling winds in the late afternoon for this second to last card made even the short putts tricky. You can see what happened in the photo.
The lowest rated player here, Tim Jackson, with a respectable 895, is a high school senior now from Austin, Minnesota. He draws first blood this morning with the first of just a few birds on 18 all day. Hole 18 is a steep uphill righty turnover at 315. Tim landed just short of the circle and made this great putt capping a 3-2 finish on 17 & 18 for his first USADGC round.
They do it all over again tomorrow playing with the same groups as they did today even though you see the scores shuffled in order on the PDGA website. All 148 who registered played today with no known withdrawals for Saturday. Tim above gets to really sleep in with the top rated crew of Wiggins, Trimmer, Beto and Weston teeing at 7:30. No aces today but Andy Bawol eagled the par 5, 726 ft, 2nd hole throwing it in for a 3 with about a 150 ft uphill toss.
