San Francisco Safari
San Francisco Safari

The San Francisco Disc Golf Club is proud to host the SF Safari in Golden Gate Park on the weekend of July 23rd & 24th, 2011. If you've ever played a round with a Bay Area disc golfer, you've probably heard a story or two about the epic temp courses that were created for the city's annual disc golf tournament, the San Francisco Safari. Set in the heart of one of the most popular urban parks in the world, the SF Safari has become legend. Thanks to the pioneering efforts of a group of dedicated disc golfers that just wanted to throw some plastic in GGP, the San Francisco Disc Golf Club now has one of the most popular tournaments on the NorCal circuit, and a permanent 18 hole disc golf course in Marx Meadow.
The SFDGC has built a treasure of a course. It is well maintained with cement tee pads, informative signage and 18 DGA baskets. The course plays tight and technical through tall Monterey Pine, Cypress, and shedding Blue Gum Eucalyptus. There are mild elevation changes to keep you in check; however, what can really make or break your round is the out-of-bounds that comes into play on several holes. Even for the locals, a clean round is something to be proud of. The South Safari course plays similar to its brother on the north with its technical characteristics...but add a handful of water shots, dirt tees and unmaintained fairways, and it becomes a different experience for sure.
Historically, the SF Safari has been held in August. But with the World Championships coming to Santa Cruz around the same time, the SFDGC saw the potential of placing their tournament along the National Tour route to the Worlds. It'll be the first time since the Marx Meadow course was installed that the South Safari course returns to its original tournament format. Bay Area disc golfers are very excited. If you haven't signed up already, make sure you do very soon. The Amateur division has sold out but there are still spots available in the Pro divisions.
So come on out a few days early to check out the course, then stay a few extra days to see the sights in the City by the Bay!
