Flags wave in the breeze, the sun is high in the sky, and a vast sea of spectators line the ropes leading to the final basket on the final day. There’s an energy you can feel on the ground as some of the world’s top disc golfers make their way to the conclusion of the tournament. It’s a scene that’s been repeated on championship Sunday at PDGA Majors hosted in Europe.

And now, as the chapter closes on the famed European Open and the meteoric rise of the European Disc Golf Festival (EDGF) continues, the PDGA Europa Cup stands to be the new crown jewel of European disc golf.

Silva Saarinen, Kristin Lätt, and Ella Hansen celebrate on the podium during the 2025 European Disc Golf Festival.
“The PDGA Europa Cup is set to be PDGA Europe’s flagship event, creating memorable moments and setting the standard for elite disc golf on the continent for years to come,” said Doug Bjerkaas, PDGA Executive Director. “The board and staff based in Europe will take the primary leadership roles in the future development and operations of this event, with support from PDGA Global. From the PDGA Euro Tour to partnerships with DGPT Europe and the amazing successes of numerous PDGA Majors hosted in Europe, the PDGA Europe team have proven themselves as leaders and they are set to continue the standard of excellence that’s been a mainstay of these elite European-hosted contests.”
"We’re excited to launch the PDGA Europa Cup as the new pinnacle of professional disc golf in Europe,” said Christer Christiansson, PDGA Europe Board President. “This marks a major step in consolidating top-level competition across the continent. We welcome the increased responsibility and resources, as well as the opportunity for greater self-governance, as we continue to build value for our members. The Europa Cup name and branding reflect a strong European identity and our ambition to create a truly iconic, world-class event — one that stands out and becomes a highlight of the global disc golf calendar.”

Calvin Heimburg celebrates his first PDGA Major victory at the 2025 2025 European Disc Golf Festival.
Evolution of Disc Golf’s “Grand Slam”
In 2022, the PDGA Champions Cup inaugural edition was held, and the PDGA took a step towards standardizing the majors contested by the world’s elite MPO and FPO competitors. This event, along with the PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships, the United States Women’s Disc Golf Championships and United States Disc Golf Championship, and the European Open would make up the “PDGA Grand Slam” mirroring a standard set by other global sports like golf and tennis. There was now a blueprint for consistency for these elite Majors.
Moving on to 2025, Nokia and Tampere, Finland hosted the PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships. As these venues prepared to host the sport’s greatest event, that left a vacancy in the “grand slam” framework previously held by the European Open. Luckily, the local organizing committee behind the European Disc Golf Festival had proven themselves champions in their own right, hosting the 2024 edition of their event on the Disc Golf Pro Tour. The rousing success of this event and the professionalism of its leaders made the EDGF a natural stand in for the European Open in 2025.
Now, as we look forward to 2026, the team that led the 2025 EDGF is set to continue their excellence in 2026 as the hosts for the inaugural PDGA Europa Cup, set for June 18-21 at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds in Tallinn, Estonia. The PDGA is extremely grateful for this team’s leadership, agility, and vision for the future.
"It’s great to see the PDGA taking another step toward professionalism by unifying the naming of Europe’s premier disc golf event," said Matthias Vutt, Head of Operations at Team Disc Golf Estonia. "For us, the organizers of the European Disc Golf Festival (EDGF), this means that the PDGA Europa Cup, alongside the Presidents Cup, will serve as the cornerstones of the 2026 Festival."
Vutt contines: "We plan to push the envelope in every aspect of disc golf during the PDGA Europa Cup. At the same time, the EDGF, an almost week-long, full-family festival, will raise the bar for what a true festival, with a sporting event at its heart, can be. We’ll offer more entertainment than ever before, attracting not only disc golf enthusiasts but also new audiences to experience and enjoy the sport, while providing something extra for the hardcore disc golf fans."
The PDGA Europa Cup will return to Estonia in 2028, followed by the PDGA Professional World Championships in 2029. You can read more about those events in this article published in April. Bids to host the 2029 PDGA Europa Cup will open in 2026.
Onward to the 2026 PDGA Europa Cup in Tallinn, Estonia!
