Portland and the Pacific Northwest has a knack for delivering high-level disc golf and thrilling finishes.
The 2022 Disc Golf Pro Tour - Portland Open presented by Dynamic Discs was no exception.
FPO: Mandujano Takes a Victory Lap
Valerie Mandujano slept on an 8-stroke lead, and warmed up on Sunday morning confident in her game plan at Glendoveer.
This year's course setup at Glendoveer features some length which favors longer throwers. Ohn Scoggins would rely on her versatility and shotmaking to make a run at a podium finish.
Rebecca Cox achieved – and kept – her lead card positioning through the weekend. Despite being set up on a traditional golf course, the track at Glendoveer relied on tee and basket placement, and strategic "mandos" to bring Oregon's massive fir trees into play. Cox's play between those trees would propel her to a top 5 finish.
One of the best on tour at hitting tight gaps with power, Catrina Allen relied on this skill all weekend. On day four, Allen's putter came alive (100% inside C1X) to preserve a podium finish.
Scoggins putting rarely disappoints, wowing the gallery every round in Portland.
Many holes at Glendoveer require second-shot excellence. Mandujano led the field in placing approaches within C2 and was second in the field in placing approaches within C1 in regulation.
In shooting a tie for the hot round on Sunday, Mandujano was never threatened during her victory lap through the pines at Glendoveer en route to her 2022 Portland Open championship.
MPO: A Dramatic Conclusion
After a bogey-bogey finish on Saturday, Simon Lizotte stepped to the first tee on Sunday with just a 2-stroke lead over a dialed-in Garrett Gurthie. The pressure would only mount from there.
Candidly admitting he's been struggling of late, Paul McBeth found a few things in his game in Portland. He would cool a bit on Sunday, but managed to secure a top-5 finish.
Garrett Gurthie maintained power off the tee and poise in the circle, despite the rainy conditions. By hole 7, he made up the 2-stroke deficit on Lizotte.
Isaac Robinson walked the stage and received his college degree just a couple of weeks ago. In shooting the hot round on day one, and remaining on the lead card for the final round en route to a podium finish, he proved the DGPT stage wasn't too big for him.
Lizotte broke through with his first victory on the pro tour after a long drought last month at the OTB Open and has been showcasing his game, his personality, and his perseverance throughout the week in Portland.
Tied through 71 holes in Portland, longtime friends step up to the daunting par 5, 18th hole at Glendoveer with eagle on their minds. To that point, the hole had yielded no eagles and just five birdies on Sunday.
Garrett Gurthie, a PDGA Bob West Memorial Sportsmanship Award winner and a crowd favorite, talked about being "in the spotlight for the first time in a while" this week. Gurthie's putting, in particular, was key in his performance in Portland.
After Lizotte and Gurthie each carded dramatic OB strokes, Lizotte needed to place this approach close, in front of one of the largest galleries of the season, to secure the 2022 Portland Open championship.
