2023 PDGA Champions Cup - MPO Final Recap

Sunday, April 23, 2023 - 20:14

Isaac Robinson was making the walk from 13 to 14 at W.R. Jackson when he saw his family and the emotions started to form.

But the work at the 2023 PDGA Champions Cup presented by Bushnell wasn't quite done yet.

"I saw my family and the tears started to come to my eyes," Robinson said. "I just had to put it away, shut it off."

A few holes later, after successfully holding off a charge from the chase card, the emotions came back in full force.

He was a PDGA Major champion for the first time.

"I think the feelings are just multiplied by five," Robinson said when asked how this Major compared to his Disc Golf Pro Tour win in 2022. "My whole family was here. It's my home state. People were sending me text messages all week long.

"It's just multiplied by infinity, really."

Robinson entered Championship Sunday with a 7-stroke lead. A charge from Silas Schultz, Niklas Anttila and Eagle McMahon added a little drama to the finish, but his work — a 40-under performance on W.R. Jackson — got him over the finish line.

Robinson said the pressure began to subside with just a few holes to plan

"When I made the putt on 16, a 30-footer uphill," he said. "I knew I had six strokes going into 17 and 18.

"You're not comfortable, but I was confident."

That was evident from the start to the second annual PDGA Champions Cup.

Robinson closed his wire-to-wire win at 40-under. Anttila and McMahon tied for second at 35-under to round out the podium in Georgia.

Congratulations Isaac! ! !
You make Georgia proud. I heard about you before I met you and then meeting you confirmed that this championship couldn't have been won by a nicer, professional representative of the sport of disc golf. That's saying a lot, cause there's a large crew of nice guys among the athletes on this tour. Again super congrats!
