The Disc Golf Pro Tour continues its path eastward with the next stop in Clearwater, MN for the Preserve Championship. Designed by Prodigy Discs Co-founder, Cale Leiviska, the beautiful, sprawling course is as picturesque as it is challenging. For the DGPT Elite Series event, both divisions will be playing the Black Bear course layout. The MPO will play a Par-65 10,806-ft layout, and the FPO a Par-66 9,874-ft one.

The Black Bear layout is a combination of the best holes from Lynx and Timberwolf, used for the Preserve Championship DGPT event. This course challenges even the biggest arms.

Last year, in the inaugural Preserve Championship, Nikko Locastro narrowly edged out a win against both Calvin Heimburg and Simon Lizotte after eagling the 18th hole. This year, however, Locastro has struggled to find the same winning formula since his win at the Waco Annual Charity Open back in March. Since then, he has had a few top 10 finishes and a few lackluster placements. He’ll need to tap into last year’s performance if he is hoping to defend his title.

With MPO competitors like Eagle McMahon, off his Discraft Great Lakes Open Win, James Conrad and his World’s win, and Paul McBeth and his Des Moines Challenge win, the field will be full of players who know what it takes to win tournaments.

Don’t count out players like Ricky Wysocki, Calvin Heimburg, Adam Hammes, Kevin Jones, or Kyle Klein, who are all playing at the top of their game lately. Any one of these players, or a slew of other big-name players, could easily hoist the trophy at the end of the weekend. The Black Bear course is a technically tough course that plays with some long holes, and there are more than enough players out of the 122 registered who can play this course well enough to take the title from Locastro.

Pierce Looks to Defend Title

In the FPO division, Paige Pierce had a dominant performance, winning by 13 strokes over Catrina Allen, who edged out Missy Gannon by 2 strokes to take 2nd. This year, however, Pierce and Allen will have to worry about a certain Estonian, Kristin Tattar. Tattar has been a commanding presence in the US this season, taking 1st at the Clash at the Canyons and last weekend at the Discraft Great Lakes Open, as well as 3rd at the Des Moines Challenge and 5th at PDGA Worlds.

Paige Pierce dominated in her 2020 Preserve Championship win, shooting 1000+ rated rounds on each day of the tournament. She was also the only player in the FPO division to shoot any 1000+ rated rounds.

While these three titans of the FPO division battle it out for the trophy, Don’t be surprised if you see players like Hailey King, Missy Gannon, Juliana Korver, Sarah Hokom, or Jessica Weese sneak their way into the conversation.
