Another school year finished at WSU, the town of Pullman became quite scarce with very few students sticking around for more school or to continue with their jobs they had during the school year. This past summer I decided to stay the whole summer and work for the library while attending a few classes that I found interesting. The rumor is summers here can be extremely boring, or so people want to believe. I just moved out of my fraternity and was now released to the lifestyle of living on my own, or in my case with my roommate. A few weeks went by then my roommate showed up from his travels in New Zealand. The summer did start out as the rumors had predicted, every day became monotonous, go to school for two hours, work the rest of the day, come home, hang out then sleep. It wasn’t until my roommate and I looked up things to do in Pullman that we realized there was an oasis hiding in the rolling hills of Pullman.
Out of shear boredom, my roommate and I went out to a park called Sunnyside Park. We pulled up and noticed that people were playing Frisbee golf here. We talked with some local Frisbee enthusiast and found out that downtown had a shop call Ricochet, where we could purchase Frisbee discs. We nonchalantly went down to the shop, purchased a few then drove back up to Sunnyside to play Frisbee golf or better known to the serious players as, Frolf. With a course map from Ricochet in hand, we went about our way through the beautiful yet treacherous course. This is no beginner course, humongous rolling hills and patches of pine trees offer not only a difficult course but a beautiful bird’s eye view of Pullman and beyond. The front 9 holes of the course mainly preside on the slanting hills, but it’s until you reach the back 9 that you experience a Pullman many have never seen. Golden blond wheat fields line the boundaries of the park while large green grass areas encompassed by beautiful trees and a large pond stretching a majority of the remaining holes sums up the oasis of Pullman. The back 9 holes require a much more accurate shot, due to a playground where kids flounder around sporadically as their mom’s gossip amongst each other.
In order to fully grasp how beautiful this park is you need to grab a Frisbee and shoot the course. If athletics is not your cup of tea, get a group of friends or a special loved one and walk the paved walkway through the park to experience this hidden gem. Another amenity Sunnyside offers is a sit down area where a group of individuals can gather and can have a BBQ or even celebrate a birthday. Every once in a while, if you are lucky, you can catch the red ear slider turtles lying out in the summer sun catching some rays. With the help of Sunnyside Park our summer was no longer a drag.
