PDGA Seeks Volunteers for Medical Subcommittees on Gender-Based-Divisions, Prohibited Substances

The PDGA is seeking qualified volunteers for two subcommittees which will report to the PDGA Medical Committee. Qualified volunteers for either subcommittee should contact the PDGA Medical Committee, identify the subcommittee of interest and include a CV/resume. Credentials of the selected subcommittee members will be verified.

Gender-based divisions:  The subcommittee will provide recommendations, based on scientific analysis, on the application of the recently released International Olympic Committee (IOC) Framework on Fairness, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity and Sex Variations. Qualified candidates include medical professionals - such as doctors, clinicians, scientists and practitioners - specializing in endocrinology, kinesiology, sports medicine and similar fields.

The creation of this subcommittee is the first step in response to the IOC framework. If any changes are recommended, additional steps may be taken in accordance with the IOC Framework. The current PDGA policy on eligibility for gender based divisions will remain in effect for the 2022 competitive season while application of the new Framework is thoroughly studied. If any changes to the current PDGA policy are ultimately recommended by the PDGA Medical Committee and approved by the PDGA Board of Directors, they will be implemented in the 2023 season at the earliest.

Prohibited substances: The subcommittee will provide recommendations, based on scientific analysis, on the application of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) List of Prohibited Substances and Methods. Qualified candidates include medical professionals - such as doctors, clinicians, scientists and practitioners - specializing in endocrinology, pharmacology, pharmacy, physiology, psychiatry, sports medicine and similar fields.

The creation of this subcommittee is the first step in alignment of the PDGA with IOC policy on prohibited substances. The current PDGA rules in 3.03 Player Misconduct sections B.5, C.3, and C.4 prohibit the public display or use of illegal or prohibited substances in violation of any applicable law and public display or use of alcohol or marijuana at PDGA-sanctioned events. Additionally, the PDGA provides a clarification of the policy on the use of prescription medicines. The subcommittee will determine which of the WADA prohibited substances are most likely to unfairly enhance disc golf performance. Further steps will be determined at a future date.
