Stretching Out at the Lake

DGPT+ Prodigy Presents WACO – Round 2 Recap

Friday, March 8, 2024 - 18:08

Kyle Klein led the MPO division at 19-under-par when Friday's second-round play was suspended with a single group left on the Lake Waco Golf Club course.

After a break-of-day thunderstorm cleansed the skies, the FPO field spread out across a new series of challenges as, for the first time, the Disc Golf Pro Tour – Prodigy Presents WACO tour stop incorporated a second course – the Lake Waco Golf Club.

In many respects, the “LACO” layout mirrors that of other country-club layouts, with water features in-play and traditional ball-golf greens serving as out-ob-bounds areas. The differences between LACO and the Brazos East track were obvious, but where it counts – on the leaderboard – the scoring opportunities were similar, as were the bogey traps.

FPO

Ella Hansen blitzed the field with the hot round of the day by three over the next best scorers. In fact, Hansen’s 6-under closing stretch on the back-nine alone would have been the best round. In total, Hansen carded nine birdies, offsetting a single bogey. The 8-under-par showing (unofficially rated 1035) vaulted Hansen into the lead by two over Ohn Scoggins.

Scoggins (-13), unsure of how her game would score at the long, open golf club, planned for a day of “boring golf.” Instead, she (along with Hailey King) achieved the second-best score of the day at minus-5. Highlighted by a 119-foot throw-in for birdie at the 11th, Scoggins remains in the top two heading back to the more technical Brazos East course.

Kristin Tattar’s 3-under-par effort lost strokes to Hansen and Scoggins, but was enough to keep her in solo possession of third. Tattar has lagged behind several top-10 players in birdie rate, but has been among the best at bogey-avoidance through the halfway mark of the event.

At two-over-par through the opening nine holes of round two, Holyn Handley was well behind her expected pace on the country club course. Flipping the script, Handley closed with six birdies in nine holes – matching the back-nine score of the leader, Hansen – and held her position on the lead card with two rounds to play.

On Saturday’s chase card will be Hailey King (-7), who vaulted from outside the top 10 to inside the top 5 as well as Henna Blomroos, up 10 positions to a tie for sixth, and Eveliina Salonen, up four positions to eighth. Natalie Ryan rounds out the card in a tie for sixth at 4-under.

MPO

After a morning weather delay bumped back all MPO tee times, an afternoon lightning delay paused play for a number of later MPO groups. In a race against darkness, all but the final foursome of the day managed to avoid an early-morning wakeup call. As it stands, the group of Gregg Barsby, James Conrad, Niklas Anttila and Anthony Barela will have to return to complete holes 16-18 of round two before venturing back to Brazos East for Saturday afternoon’s third round.

Although incomplete, several storylines from the MPO’s second round are apparent. An 11-under showing from Benjamin Callaway will stand as the top round-two performance, vaulting him 74 places up the leaderboard to a tie for 25th.

Further ahead, Luke Humphries, thanks to a 10-under-par effort, has almost certainly played his way onto Saturday’s lead card. He’ll likely join Kyle Klein (-19) in the final grouping of round three, though the other two members of the foursome are still in doubt.

An even par finish in the morning for Niklas Anttila (currently 18-under) and Gregg Barsby (currently 17-under) would keep the duo on the lead card for the second straight day. Lurking are Joel Freeman (-16), Gannon Buhr (-16), Nate Sexton (-16) and Mason Ford (-15), all having completed round two. Barela (currently 15-under) will need to pick up at least one stroke in the morning to secure a chase card spot for Saturday afternoon.

Coverage on the Disc Golf Network continues on Saturday morning with the conclusion of the MPO second round, followed by the FPO third round at Brazos East.
