FPO - A front runner emerges

Conditions improved in Nokia for the second round of the Nokia Open in Finland on Friday. Sunshine, low wind, and moderate temperatures kept the field comfortable and competitive during a pivotal moving day.

In FPO, Heidi Laine scored a remarkable birdie on hole 16, which fans may recognize as the final hole for the European Open. During four rounds of the European Open in 2019, there was only one birdie on this hole. That birdie was scored by Paige Pierce. This weekend in Nokia, Laine holds that singular distinction in the FPO field.

Laine’s 998-rated second round helps the Finnish competitor expand her lead to ten throws over Estonia’s Maria Liivamägi and Anneli Tõugjas who round out the final-day lead card.

A mix up at the top

Jesse Nieminen woke up with a mission on Friday. Evidently that mission was to shred the course at Nokia.

A bogey-free 1082-rated eleven-under-par round propelled the player from Finland from tied for thirteenth to the lone spot atop the MPO field.

The final round lead card is rounded out by Rasmus Saukkoriipi from Raisio, Finland, Thomas Gilbert from Toronto, Canada, and Hjalte Jensen from Esbjerg V, Denmark.

Despite the challenging fairways and looming OB on the course, fireworks erupted on the course today with an eagle two on the formidable fourteenth hole. Esa Salonen’s bid from the fairway found the bottom of the basket, making Salonen the only player carding an eagle so far in the tournament.
