After days of downpour left staff and volunteers alike wondering if the courses would be playable, the 2019 PDGA Amateur World Doubles Championships began its 29th running on Friday morning without issue. 110 teams made the trek to the small town of Mt. Vernon, Texas to take on four championship-level HouckDesign courses all while playing multiple formats of doubles disc golf.

Doubles Formats

Each team competing at the 2019 Amateur World Doubles Championships presented by HouckDesign. will play two rounds of Best Throw, one round of Alternate Throw, and one round of Best Score and those fortunate enough to make the finals will play a 9-hole loop broken into Best Throw, Best Score, and the dreaded Worst Throw. Replace the word "throw" with "shot" and the formats might sound more familiar.

The term "Worst Shot" gets thrown around a lot, pun intended, but it is very commonly misused. Often time when people refer to Worst Shot they are actually playing Tough Shot. They both play by the same rules except with one very critical difference; in true Worst Shot format, BOTH teammates have to hole out. Imagine watching your partner get an ace and then realizing it won't count unless you ace it too. That's Worst Shot. It's brutal, but beautiful.

There are even more doubles formats that exist. More information can be found in the Doubles and Team Play section of the Official Rules of Disc Golf.

Courses

Selah Ranch, home to Selah Ranch Lakeside and Selah Ranch Creekside, offers up as many beautiful views as it does challenging holes. Just a few miles away, Trey Texas Ranch does much of the same with two more championship courses, Trey Deuce and Texas Twist. Any of the four courses being used would be difficult for most doubles teams while playing Best Throw or Best Score, so we can only assume that Alternate Throw and Worst Throw are going to produce some interesting numbers.

The weather was perfect this morning for the opening round.

Stay tuned for more coverage of the 2019 PDGA Amateur World Doubles Championships. Live scoring will be up and running for the finals on Sunday and The Disc Golf Guy is already on site filming highlights throw-by-throw videos.
