Well, we have completed another 18 tee pads at Mohawk. Thats a total of 34 poured with another 14 to go.
This pouring concrete every Friday is getting hard on an old man and the rest of the crew, but we are almost complete.

Thanks to all of the volunteers that came out on Thhursday and Friday. Too many names to mention, but trust me, it was the same ones that have been doing it all along. ;)

We had to battle 200 girl scouts to get it done, so we sicked King on them in his daisy dukes and a mid drift and they ran away screaming for help. This gave us just enough time to get them done before the national guard showed up.

We will be taking forms off on Sunday and beging preping for another pour next Friday. We need people out there every night this week. if you're available, please come out and help.
Is it hot out there? Yes.
Are ther mosquitos? Yes
Are ther ticks? Not as many since we are mowing.
Is it worth it? YES

If you have heard rumors that it is nasty back on the black course, they are now false. I have taken in some players that are HIGHLY allergic to poison ivy and they have given it their approval. So come out and help next week in the evenings.
PLEASE. :D

Well old hole 2 at Redhawk is slick. Looks like it wasn't brushed.

And there are "baby prints" on one of the holes on the short side. I think that was a mistake. But who cares what I think.

I saw the rubber pads, that is a nice temporary fix, but what are we thinking long term?

Chip it up and pour a new one?

Awful nice course to have one pad that is different.

... Sunday went well at Haikey ... plenty of ice-cold beverage , but only 4 of us to drink it ... I guess we'll have some leftovers out there on Monday (12th) evening (7pm) ... several "younger" dudes have said they will be out to lend a hand ... we're out in "clean areas" ; no shule-or-thorns-or-ivy-or-chiggers-or-ticks ... we got them out today ... the little dig-n-replants today were "TAGGED" ... this is a new term I've come up with for what bodies usually throw-in-and-help-out ...

In order to pour the last of the pads at Mohawk, we need some help this week in the evenings. We need the alternate tee pad areas weedeated and cleaned up so that we can install the forms. We will also need as many wheel barrows as possible on Friday so that we can make short work of #18 teed pad. It is the only one we can't get a trailer to.

We can also begin installing the tee sign poles for the entire course. If we can get a crew of three guys this can be done in two evenings. I will rent an auger so that there is no shovel digging to be done.
The Hunter tee poles are also available for installation.

It is imparative that we get the prep work done for Mohawk this week before Friday. If we can't pour Mohawk on Friday, then we can't pour Haikey the next Friday and that will push us into July. We need to stay on schedule for the next two weeks so that all of the courses will be done by the end of June and all of the local volunteer/players can have time to practice for the event.

Please come out to Mohawk tonight and Help. Thong Le, Conners ond others will be out there organizing the efforts.

Tuesday 13th - prep alternate tee areas and back fill the new pads.
Wed 14th - conintue preping pads and begin setting the forms for concrete.
Thurs 15th - finish setting forms, fill low areas with dirt and set the wire re-mesh.
Friday 16th - pour the remianing tee pads at mohawk.
Saturday 17th - Maybe we can do the tee sign poles at Hunter
Sunday 18th -pull the forms from Mohawk and back fill the pads.
Monday 19th - Install the tee sign poles
Tues 20th - finish installing the tee sign poles.
Wed 21st - begin prepping the five tee areas at Haikey
Thurs 22nd - set the forms for Haikey
Friday 23rd - pour the pads at Haikey
Saturday 24th - touch up work at Haikey
Sunday 25th - pull the forms and back fill the tee pads.

Monday - DONE! start practicing.

On a good note, we met with the city officials at Mohawk yesterday afternnon. They were very impressed with what we have done so far. They also agreed to maintain the Black course with regular mowings. :DAND the biggest news................we walked them in on #1 and they noticed poison ivy, we told them just don't throw your disc in there. They didn't like that, so they are going to provide back pack sprayers and we have been given the go ahead to spray the fair ways, tee areas and greens with ROUND UP! :D:D
So for all of you poison ivy haters, you should be loving that. :DThey will also spray for ticks just before the event. As for spraying for mosquitos, forget it, lets just hope it is dry the two weeks before the event and they shouldn't be too much of a problem. ;)

Saturday July 8th - Grand opening of Mohawk, two rounds, both courses. New chainstar to be given away, get your raffel tickets.

Thurs 15th - set all of the remaining forms (8), fill low areas with dirt and set the wire re-mesh. Extra people can finish back filling the new pads on the red course. I will try to be out there as early as possible today, hopefully by 3:00 -4:00. I need to pick up a roll of remesh for tonight. The number of forms to set tonight depend on if they get the areas clread out by this evening, if not, we will only be setting maybe 5 forms today. There are currently 5 forms already set to go.

If you are looking for hot chicks, it makes no difference where you find them. Would you turn down a date with a hot chick you met at the state pennitentary while going to watch an execution? Funerals, executions, excorcisms or the mall, it doesnt really matter where you meet them. Now if they eat lead paint chips and have Turretts, you might reconsider.

Four weeks ago if you would have asked me to be honest about having Mohawk ready for play, I would have been very doubtfull. But, after all of the volunteers that came out to help for the last three weeks, we are almost completely done with Mohawk. All 46 tee pads have been poured, with a total of 62 across town and 69 after we are finished. :o:D
Man, that's a lot of concrete!

All that is left is the instaltion of tee signs and the back filling of dirt around the tee pads, conrete clean up and one more trip through with the Bob Cat. I will get the bob cat in there this weekend or next weekend for the finishing touches.
For those that were there in the begining, they have watched a transformation of dense woods into a beautifull golf course.
For those that have never seen it, I'm not sure you can appreciate exactly how much work has been done out there.
Thanks to every volunteer that has worked at Mohawk, we could not have done it with out you! :D

One more week of busting our ^&^^% on the courses and we should be **** near ready for the world to come and play. ;)

Thanks for posting the distances and par on the hawks!

Is hole 9 on WHITE really a par 4 while hole 9 on BLACK is only a 3...even though they are both 410?

I went by hunter after I got off today and the little tree that sits out in front of hole # 4 was cut down by someone I am pretty #$*&$! about this as it changes the hole incredibly so we need a fix for it to make it somewhat difficult oh I am so angry right now I could spit nails

:mad::(

All FIXED!

We took the tree that some ***** cut down on #4 and dug a very deep hole, trimed all of the limbs from the tree, stood it up in the hole, which is directly behind the original tree, dumped in a large amount of concrete and VILOA! The tree is back in the fairway where it belongs. We will also add an additional treatment to the tree that will prevent any saw going through it again. :D

Thanks Wayne!

14 of 18 tee poles were installed yesterday at Hunter. But for some reason, I am three poles short? I don't know how the he11 that happened, I wasn't at the office when they were delivered. So since I only have one pole with me and still missing three, I will NOT be back out at Hunter tonight. At least not until I find three more poles.

We do need some people at Hunter tonight, to gather and/or finish digging up the 4x4 wooded post that are there now. We need to locate them near hole 17 tee area so that they can be picked up and trailered to another course on Wed.

Wed evening we will be at Haikey to begin setting the 5 new tee pads for the pour on Friday. We need help, so be there. ;)

Jun 20 2006, 10:13 AM
Since we had a scorecard we had to go test the ole RedHAWK course out. It was my first time to play itsince we had all 18 in. Was out there to do some tree locating for the tee signs. I have to say I enjoyed playing it, many different shot variations on many of the holes. Hole #16 is BEAUTIFUL with the blooming tree hanging over the creek.

There is now a course record to shoot for. The CR will probably end up around 44 or 43 but 47 (55 for ladies ;)) is a good score to shoot for. My guess is that a 47 on RedHAWK would be a 1020+ rated round

Jun 20 2006, 02:56 PM
As far as I know,

It was a 1st Run Champion Edition Teebird oooooooh how sweet it was. Thats a small gap that you have to weave through ;)

After my first trip through, I'm satisfied playing that track. There is so many diferent shots from rollers, skip shots, spike hyzers, forehands, big horkin annhyzers, and even a thumber or two on RedHawk.

I'm looking forward to playing WhiteHawk sometime soon. ;)

Nope, I don't think that was the first. Dan Bougher, Devan and some others witnessed an ace last weekend by some rec player.

Good cuz I was debating if the sentence; "RedHawk got her Cherry Popped" was too graphic for the blog tomorrow :D

Now it doesn't have to be added in there. But I did witness either a Aligator or a Anaconda in the creek on hole #14 last night. :(

I did a quick check on Mohawk and with this afternoon's rains, work is out for this evening. Too wet.
We are still on schedule to finish by thge end of the month and we will be pouring concrete in the morning at Haikey rain or shine. ;)

We need a few people out there by no later than 8:30 so that we can get the re-mesh cut and delivered to the pads. If anyone has any questions or if they are still planning on working tonight, give me a call and I will point you in the right direction.

You not only stepped upon these Pads , but you etched your names into them !
I wouldnt want to be in your shoes.

Because NOW , the COURSE KARMA follows YOU like an invisible fog everywhere !
It can take all forms it might be a throw with no distance a Lost disc Trees & Limbs that slap-down your shot Putts that wont stay in NOT just on THIS COURSE , but everywhere !
Even if you are not Disc Golfers: it has your number as well!
It might be that extra Mosquito Bite another prick from a thorn-bush your Computer crashing at home your vehicles getting worse Gas-Mileage
that next headache you get all sorts of Bad Funk !
IT NEVER DIMINISHES It worsens thru passage of Time
Im sure youll read this as you come back to admire your handiwork.
Remember: I DID NOT put this upon you ; YOU have done this to yourself !
I certainly would not wish this on anybody !!!
 I feel sorry for you
But I would spare you your Grief I CAN HELP
Call your Course TD my name is Forest 494-9627
It might be a short bit of Course assistance It might be you buying me a Cold Beer but an act of penance by you both will enable me to have this Curse Of Bad Karma removed.

All these little punks screwing with our courses. Especially Hunter.....I think Wise had a good idea. People keep screwing with Hunter then after the Worlds we should just ask the city to pull the course altogether. I don't understand why all these spoiled little rich brats in south Tulsa don't have anything better to do. Someone should slap their parents upside the head and take those kids down to the vet and have them put to sleep.

OK.... here is a rethink....Does any one who hunts have one of those spy cameras that are used to stake out dear trails just before hunting season? if so maybe the club could rent them and stake out some of the trouble spots... then we could give the wanted posters a good posting as well as turning them over to the coppers!!

It wasn't his suggestion, it was mine. I still stand by it. The problem is that all of the vandalism effects each member of the club, as we are the ones that have to foot the bill to repair or replace the damages. Two baskets in the last two years at $500 each for total replacement.

I for one am tired of going out to Hunter to play and it looks like the biggest Ghetto course in town and it is in the most affluent part of town.. The vandalism is continuous at that course.

With Tulsa now having 14 courses and with the upkeep of those, our plates are full. We do not have the time or resources to keep fixing everything they steal or break at that course. I would hate very much to lose that course, it is one of our better layouts, but enough is enough. Would you rather have a course out there that is in need of constant repair, constant damage control, always looks like a crap hole, or just do away witrh it and concentrate our efforts on the courses that are appreciated?

If it isn't there then they can tear it up. Sad but true. :(

If you have suggestions to combat this problem, lets hear them. I think we have tried all of them.

I think it's also good to note that the city of Fayetville pulled Northshore for a month after someone cut down a few branches. Seems like within the last two weeks someone at Hunter cut down a whole tree. Then after the club cemented it back into the ground someone tried to pull it out. I guess when they couldn't get it then they decided to take out their frustration on the new tee signs which now I hear, 4 or 5 or them are bent due to vandals. What are you going to do if you catch them? Beat their little butts and then have their parents sue your butt for child abuse? :p

This is not like when there's a tournament and some OKC guys steal a basket at Dovillio. :o.... This crap seems to happen at Hunter on a regular basis. You want to hear another suggestion? Let's hang one of the little punks from the tree they cut down. Either that or float'em in the creek with a tee sign shoved up their butt.

If it isn't there then they can tear it up. Sad but true. :(

If you have suggestions to combat this problem, lets hear them. I think we have tried all of them.
;)

WELL....we do have chains from old baskets and wads of dried concrete .... and several big lakes with deep spots .... /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

So once the Mohawk courses start having the same vandalism problems - as seen already - it'll get pulled too?

I agree with Treat, this solution seems drastic.

At what point do these courses/baskets become the repsonsibility of the city parks department? Are they or the police aware of the problem?? Have we posted signs on the course asking for help in reporting vandalism? Just about everyone has a cell phone if they see this happening.

I would rather see, after worlds, Hunter stripped down to baskets and tee pads before seeing it pulled.

Tee signs are great, but I would rather have Hunter in the ground without tee signs than the course pulled completely.

Just my opinion...

I think that Mohawk is a little different from Hunter.

It seems like there is more maintenece out there out Mohawk and the county wanted us there.

Hunter it seems like they don't care one way or the other if we are out there. Which is a shame since the TD out there does what he can for it.

Just a thought. If I'm wrong oh well.

YES Have we posted signs on the course asking for help in reporting vandalism? Yes, at Haikey when it was a problem Just about everyone has a cell phone if they see this happening. We always report what we see, it's things we don't see that are causing the problems.

I would rather see, after worlds, Hunter stripped down to baskets and tee pads before seeing it pulled.
Agreed

While pulling the course would be a drastic move, it may be what is need to send the message to all the casuals out there to pay attention and report vandalism. The problem is that the casuals and the delinquent children take this course and it's equipment for granted. They think since it belongs to the city, it belongs to them and they can trash it any way they want, The city will replace it, right? WRONG!

The city will NOT replace the stolen or damaged equipment. It is not a priority to them. Some of the other praks have a different situation. For instance, Chandler, Mohawk, Haikey have staffed crews and workers on the course everyday. McCLure, Riverside don't have as many problems due to the amount of people in the park everyday and they are visible any where on the course. Dovillio, doesn't have the problems because the casuals don't like to play the course and that course is also visible from the houses on just about all of it.

Hunter has no crews, except for the contract mowers, and some of the holes are not visible to other park patrons. It also has a neighborhood full of kids with money and time on their hands but no respect for anything. It would appear that even the City has had problems out there and now the park closes at 9:00pm instead of 11:00pm because of it.

So what vandalism problems at Mohawk are you referring to? And thats not a fare question, we have been battling vandalism at Hunter year after year, so when does it stop?

kipster
Jun 26 2006, 01:51 PM
I don't know any specifics - just thought I had heard some minor things here and there about baskets/pads at Mohawk -my mistake. But with the traffic out there - vandalism is inevitable.

Just not sure the message will get across to the right people about the reason for pulling the course. Don't think the vandals/casuals will say - "oh crap, they pulled Hunter, I better not do anything to the other courses in town now or i should have reported that vandalism I saw earlier!"

As far as reporting the vandals in the act - it's not like these punks are doing it in front of a bunch of people - they may be dumbasses by they aren't stupid to do it in front of a 4some or on the highly visible holes during the day. Safe to assume most of the action happens after dark.

I really doubt that Hunter would ever get pulled. For one thing, the city probably wouldn't do it. And even if the they did the club would be responsible for removing the baskets and I doubt anyone would want to spend the time doing it. All I know is it seems like a waste of club funds to keep supporting it if it costs the club more to maintain it then the money the club gets from running mini's out there.

I don't know of any vandalizm at Mohawk yet other then a few dummies using baskets for trash cans, horse tie ups, and some drunk who probably drove into one of the baskets. I imagine you will probably see some eventually by the ponds after some jackbutt DG'er hits someones kid fishing or has some confrontation with a fisherman. The way those guys feel is probably that they were there first and screw all these guys coming around telling me I gotta to move. Sooner or later someone's going to dig up a basket and throw it in the middle of the pond. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I suggest after the Worlds the club should make Hunter a low priority for club funds if the vandals keep trashing the place. Instead of replacing a stolen basket with a new one, use one of the old baskets we pulled from another course. We don't need t-signs either. Once they're gone, ......they're gone. Let the little punks call the city themselves and complain that there no more handles left for the vandals to steal. :p

Mohawk -

We still need to get dirt around the last tee pad on Redhawk. All of the tee poles have been planted on that course.

We need to get all off the old lumber hauled off of the Black course and from behind the country store. Also haul off all of the extra concrete and do the dirt work that is left on most of the black course.
Need a truck or trailer that can haul dirt, shovels and the bodies to use them. We also need to start planitng the tee pole for the Black course.
I will not be out for much work this week and not at all tonight due to club meeting.

Please volunteer if you can, we are in the home stretch of this project. Just a few more nights work and we will be ready. Lets not leave it unfinished, lets get it done by the end of the week and we will be right on schedule to finish by the end of the month. ;)

If you can offer your help, please call me 232-8562.

Pulling Hunter would be a mistake.

As others have already said pulling the entire course is way drastic.

If we need to brainstorm about how to keep the equipment safe, then let's do that.

But let's not just jump on the boat with one of Dave's misguided illusions.

Constructive thinking is all we need.

How about this...

We "bulletproof" the course. Make everything stronger and impervious to annihilation.

Maybe we can get some re-bar donated and get a little welding crew out there and do the thing.

Maybe this is not the best idea, but I for one would like to see some other peoples opinions on the matter.

Don't kill a course.

Let me say there is no agenda to have the course pulled. It was only my opinion and if you read back, I asked for any suggestions that some one may have.

In the day, when I reigned as the "Real World Champion", I was always inclined to use a cart. However, as a black haired , blue eyed adonis and an international athelete and celebrity, I was constantly mobbed by legions of very attractive super models and movie actresses. Ultimately, I had each disc in my bag carried by one of these bombshells. Others threw rare orchids at my feet so my expensive endorsement shoes wouldnt get dirty. My entourage was a gallery in its self, especially if you include all of the media coverage, paporatzzi and the army of all of my fans that were always there cheering me on. Fortunately for me, since I married Angela, I no longer need such a spectacular atmosphere when I compete. I can now either carry my golf bag or use the ever reliable golf cart. Having played around the world on so many differnt courses, let me assure you that the Tulsa courses are cart friendly. In closing, I may be available for an autograph and photo session for my fans, provided my agent and legal team can work out the details. Get ready for one of the best weeks you will ever spend playing disc golf. REST YOUR EYES IN SHADES OF GREEN, ITS ALL TOO BEAUTIFUL

I am going to be coming for Am Worlds and I got a chance to go play Haikey and Hunter yesterday. I shot a 60 at both parks and was wondering what the pars are at these particular courses?
Without the tee signs it was a bit hard to play a couple of holes but I loved the course layouts. Just kinda wondering how I did compared to what par is going to be for the courses.

Heath
Jul 09 2006, 10:30 AM
When will everyoner realize that Par is a totally irrelevant #. If we call it a par 54 and you were +6, would your score be any different if we called it a par 62 and you were -2? Tournament play makes the number assigned to "par" useless. Count up all the strokes and the guy with the fewest wins, no matter what par is.

By the way good shooting on both those courses Willie. I think they may both be high 50 or low 60 Par.

Melissa
Jul 09 2006, 11:17 AM
Par does matter when a player is not present to throw a hole. The player receives Par +4, so it does matter if the player gets a 7 or a 9, right?

Oh, and by the way, I can't believe you left your 8 month pregnant wife at home this weekend. What kind of husband are you? JK ;) Good shootin' yesterday! See ya at World's.

Good point Melissa. Here is another reason course par will matter at Worlds. I play McClure and I shoot a 50 which is -4 to par. You play Mohawk Black and you shoot 58 which is -4 to par. On a relative basis we shot the same round. So it is a good way to compare your round to someone else's round that played a different course.

Usually I could care less about par because I do not show up late and most events everyone is playing the same course at the same time. These are the two best reasons for par.

Heath
Jul 09 2006, 06:41 PM
You are absolutely correct. In a penalty situation par +strokes is important. Seems like that might be the only time. Otherwise you are just adding up strokes.

And you are right, I am a terrible husband for leaving her home. I was planning on sending my entry for World's this evening, but how can I do that when she is going to be 2 weeks from delivery when World's is going on. Hmmmm... what to do?

I do realize that for tourney play "par" is not an important number, I just thought it would be nice to know what is kinda expected out of these courses. I guess I should have worded it as "What is a good Am score on these two courses?" . Later I found the results from the Haiket Warm-up and realized I had shot a really good round there, of course it was only one round not two.

Melissa, I am glad the mesage earlier got cleared up, as I did not realize that it was Mr Whitley writing about par. I don't know if you remember me, but I am the guy who traded a disc he had won in the tourney for a shirt for his brother-in-law who didn't get one. I was hurt because I thought you were calling me inconsiderate of my wife (who is due Tuesday), when in reality she DRUG me to Tulsa :( :D:D:D because she wanted to buy some baby stuff at Burlington Coat Factory. Now I realize I was mistaken in that reference being to me and feel much better about myself and my disc golf playing! :) Thanks again for the trade on the shirt and
Thank you Mr Whitley for the kind words on the round. I look forward to seeing you at Worlds (good luck with your baby!!)

When will everyoner realize that Par is a totally irrelevant #.

Why Disc Golf needs consistent par standards:

1. In tournaments when a player is late you need the par for a hole to know what penalty score to give that player. (The penalty is par + 4 for missed holes.)
2. For tournaments a consistent standard allows over/under scoring for spectators and the potential TV audience. A reason to have a hole by hole par established is to compare golfers on different holes. Climo is shooting -7 and Schultz -6 but Climo has played 2 more holes is easier (especially to TV viewers) than saying Climo is at 43 after 17 holes while Shultz is at 37 after 15
3. So that players can judge their progress by comparison to a consistent standard for what an expert player can expect to score on a hole. This acknowledges the reality of par 2, 4, 5 and even par 6 holes.
3.1. One of the first questions that most new players ask is What is par on this hole? We should be able to give them a consistent and universally accepted answer.
4. It is easier to keep track of scores in relation to par than by the total numerical value. This is why most players report their score as 6 down rather than 48.
5. The reality of disc golf being a golf type game is that the terms par, under par, bogey and birdie naturally accompany the sport. It would be strange to have a sport with the word golf in it that doesnt use these terms. If were going to use the term par then it should have a standard method of determining it.
6. In tournaments such as Worlds with multiple courses you need par to be able to compare players in different pools playing different courses.
7. Par is an important factor for comparing the difficulty of different courses. Otherwise there is an insurmountable portability error.
8. Expectations of par affect your mental outlook and your performance. This especially comes into play when you play a new course. If Renaissance Gold is a par 54 then it's insanely hard, but if it's par 70 then it's not as tough. If you think you should take a 3 on a 1000 ft. hole then you will try way too hard, but if you accept that it is a par 5 you can relax and pace yourself.
9. If the term par is defined in a multitude of ways by many different people then the term loses its meaning, so it becomes worthless along with the related terms such as birdie, bogie.
10. To be able to determine handicaps.

No problem, and thanks for the thoughts. We are going in at midnight to begin the process (induce), so a new lady disc golfer should be in the world at sometime tomorrow. I would appreciate prayers for an easy delivery and recovery, as we were in the hospital for 5 days with our first (breathing and heart problems). I am proud to say that now he is a healthy 2 year old and is very close to breaking the 2 and under DG distance record. :D
