Old Warrior Run at Trace State Park - Gold

Course Reviews
Definitely the premiere course in not only Mississippi, but in the South period. Pairing the natural beauty of the land with exquisite course design, Trace Gold is an experience unlike any other. Rooted deep in Pontotoc, this treasure has 18 holes all with a claim to be the course's signature hole. But the stretch of holes 6-10 are probably the most gorgeous and uniquely challenging holes you'll ever encounter. 6 is a par 4 at around 600 feet, with water lacing both sides of an uneven levee you have to hit for a chance for an upshot at birdie. 7 is a 1040 ft par 5 with water along the right the whole way, and OB mostly down the left. Choke points are strategically placed so the long arms have more danger, but higher reward if successful. Hole 8 is a 430 ft DOWNHILL par 3 to a basket on a peninsula. Hole 9 is the more regular of the bunch, giving you a choice for a 370 ft FH hyzer or BH hyzer around a large tree. Hole 10 is a little over 800 ft, but this par 5 is true risk reward. The fairway is split 95% of the way by water. And the further you advance up the first fairway, the further it is to cross over to the second. But if short on the first fairway, the third shot plays as a huge BH hyzer only playable by most with cannons for arms. Trace Gold is unlike anything you've ever seen before. It flares its teeth at all unworthy of tackling all it demands just to shoot even. And it's waiting for you.

Played this course with my two sons (20/22) last weekend. It's located in the Trace National Park; there's a small fee to get into the park - but once in, the course is free to play. It is a beautiful course and several holes are played around water. It is a technically challenging and fairly long course. Mostly flat, but with some rolling hills and a mix of wooded and open holes. After playing several MS courses that do not have concrete tees, it was nice that this course does have concrete tees. Having said all of the pluses about this course, it does not rate more than three stars for three notable reasons: 1.) direction between holes is poor or nonexistent. At the park entry, the attendant passed out scorecards with a course map - but the map is only vaguely accurate. 2.) There are no tee markers to give players a clue as to the hole direction when the basket can't be seen from the tee and 3.) The baskets do not have any colored features which makes them, at times, difficult to spot. Overall, this is a fair course that with a little TLC could be a great course.
