Wysocki, Allen Win Back-To-Back Victories at the Discraft Green Mountain Championships

Saturday, September 17, 2016 - 13:06

The final round of the Discraft Green Mountain Championships (GMC) went by quickly this morning as the top players from the Open and Open Women’s division took on Brewster Ridge here at beautiful Smuggler’s Notch in Vermont. This place is genuinely one of the best disc golf venues in the world. Finding anything to criticize is a nearly impossible task.

Smuggler’s Notch is home to two courses; Brewster Ridge and Fox Hill. The courses are night and day, with Brewster Ridge being the insanely difficult wooded course that the pros took on this morning for the second time this weekend. Ricky Wysocki #38008 and Catrina Allen #44184 began the round as the leaders and never looked back.

When round two came to an end on Saturday, Catrina had moved from 2nd place to the top of the leaderboard, crushing the opposition and putting herself eight or more ahead of the rest of the field. There was simply no stopping her.

Catrina continued adding to her lead throughout the round, finishing with six birdies and two bogeys. To put that into perspective, the rest of the women on the card had a combined 10 birdies overall. Catrina’s round of 56 (four under par) left her once again as the only woman to shoot under par, finishing the day 16 ahead of Paige Pierce #29190 to become the 2016 Women’s GMC Champion for the second time in a row.

Ricky Wysocki, Paul Ulibarri, and Nikko Locastro hitting great birdie putts on the lead card.

Catrina’s story is similar to that of the Open division champion, Ricky Wysocki. Much like Catrina, Ricky took home another wire-to-wire win, but with a bit more to worry about as far as the players that were chasing him. Ricky began the round with a lead of just four, with some of the most talented disc golfers in the world on his heels.

If there were any doubters before the round began that Ricky was going to take this one home, their opinions were likely swayed just five holes into the round. Ricky was five under par through hole 5, including three birdies and a ridiculous eagle on hole 4 after a 200 foot forehand throw-in with a putter.

Paul McBeth #27523 amongst many others made a run at Ricky, but no one ever got to within two strokes of catching up. Paul finished with the hot round of 12 under par, tying the course record from the Gold tees. Even with that effort, McBeth still finished eight off the lead to tie Cale Leiviska #24341 for second place.

Thank you to all of the staff and volunteers here at Smuggler’s Notch for making this such an amazing weekend. And congratulations to both Ricky Wysocki and Catrina Allen for their second Green Mountain Championships victories in a row!
