SC Nationals Day 1

SC Nationals Day 1

Saturday, August 29, 2009 - 22:28

The rain finally stopped as dawn broke on the first Super Class Nationals hosted at Lemon Lake in NW Indiana. There was a nip in the air calling for some long sleeves as the players prepared to tackle the first 24-hole layout dubbed "Japan" (the full White course with a circle of Red holes in the middle). Some old school players like Pete Fust of New Mexico and David Greenwell of Kentucky were ready to take on some new school players like Taylor Sears of Oklahoma and Dave Shaw from the Lemon Lake area.

The discs were mostly different weights of Zephyrs with a scattering of Super Heroes and at least one Te Moko from New Zealand. The wind was fairly light and the course would be the easiest Super Class layout of the weekend with six par 4s and the rest 3s. After the first round, Dave Shaw shot a -11 (67) in Open to take a slim one throw lead over Super Class newcomer, Matt Marckese. Local Dan Pastore was one more back with David Greenwell and Chuck Kennedy tied four back.

The wind picked up for the afternoon session on the All American 24-hole layout with several holes each from the Red, White and Blue courses. Most of the multiple par holes in this Super Class par 79 layout were bunched up as the last several holes from the Red course making for a tough finish. Greenwell reports that Shaw was bombing his drives and Marckese was unconscious sinking long putts from everywhere. When the dust settled, Marckese had the best round at -11 (68) followed by -10s from Shaw, Greenwell and Rosenbalm. Shaw and Marckese are tied atop Open going into the final 24 Sunday with Greenwell four back. Look for live scoring starting around 8:45am Central time Sunday morning if we can get a good signal.
