Wysocki with a Scorcher in Tallinn

European Disc Golf Festival Underway

The European Swing is nearly over for this season, but it definitely seems like it’s going to end with a home run here at the DGPT Europe European Disc Golf Festival in Tallinn.

The festivities have been going on for a few days at the Tallinn Song Contest Grounds, and the excitement in the Estonian capital is almost tangible. The specially designed course starts and ends with two spectacular holes, that gave the 2000+ spectators who came out during the working hours today a great showing.

First it was time for the FPO field to take on the course, and although she started with a double bogey on hole 1, Heidi Laine was even par after hole 7 – and that included one more bogey. But then, the Laine-express took off and a streak of 8 consecutive birdies ensued. And after adding her 12th and last birdie of the round on hole 17, she is now the FPO leader sitting -9 with a round rating of 1028.

That puts her two strokes ahead of fellow Finn, Eveliina Salonen, who would have been bogey free if not for one on hole 18. Nevertheless, Salonen has shown her incredible ability to bounce back after that horrible final round last weekend. She finished her round -7 with a 1011 round rating.

Kaidi Allsalu and Keiti Tätte, whom the local favourites would have been rooting for, finished in -5 and -4 respectively, placing them both on lead card tomorrow. And with the forecast for tomorrow predicting near perfect scoring conditions, the Estonian crowd will definitely give them the confidence to make a charge for the lead!

In total, no less than six Estonians made the Top 10, but surprisingly Kristin Tattar is placed in 9th with an even par for the round. But with last weekend in mind, we know what sort of comebacks she is capable of piecing together!

In the MPO division, James Proctor came in early with -10, and looked to be a contender for the lead – until Ricky Wysocki absolutely demolished the course that is. Proctor is tied for 2nd place with Kyle Klein and Väinö Mäkelä, who has shown great form since his mid-season switch to Innova. The three all shot bogey free, 1070 rated rounds, but they had a considerable amount of work ahead of them tomorrow if they are to catch Wysocki.

Wearing the Estonian shirt, the 2x world champion made easy work of the front 9, taking birdies on all holes, before ‘slowing’ down on hole 10 with a par. Then a turkey followed by his 2nd and last par of the round, before closing out with birdies on the last four holes.

His course record -16, 1119 rated round, will see him start lead card tomorrow with a 6-stroke cushion. Just incredible!

Paul McBeth and Calvin Heimburg are T5 in -9 – one stroke off the lead card, and they are in turn being chased by no less than 9 players with -8 sitting in T7. That means that there are 15 players in the Top 10.
