History, triumph and heartbreak highlight every inch of the hill that overlooks Santa Cruz, California.
The memorable moments are there at every turn at DeLaveaga Disc Golf Course — a roller ace from Gregg Barsby, a win from Paige Pierce in 2011 that started a career year, Catrina Allen's four titles, Ken Climo's record six Masters Cup titles, Garrett Guthrie's first National Tour win, the birth of Ricky Wysocki's 'raptor legs.'
The list goes on and on.
The heartbreak, like the cliffs on the storied track, looms large as well.
On Friday, DeLa is once again set to test the best in the sport as the 35th Annual Santa Cruz Masters Cup, the third stop on the PDGA National Tour, kicks off.
For the first time since 2015, all three rounds of this long-running National Tour stop will be on the disc golf course at DeLa. Four pins have been lengthened and the 24-hole course features three par 4s, including Hole 14, which was moved back in honor of beloved DeLa member Chuck Burket, who passed away earlier this year. Par is 75 and the course checks in at 8,499 feet for both the MPO and FPO divisions.
While live coverage of the event isn't possible from the Disc Golf Network due to signal at DeLa, five post-produced teams will be on hand to deliver you the next chapter in history, as well as updates on PDGA Facebook, Twitter and Instagram social media pages. Fans can also follow the action on UDiscLive.
Ahead of the Masters Cup, a few of the top players stopped by for a press conference on Thursday. Here are some highlights:
"I get a little goosebumps coming into the course. That feeling two years ago of making that last putt and making that first big accomplishment. That’s the first thing that comes to mind when I come to the course. The emotions come out and hopefully I can thrive on those this weekend to pull out another one," — Defending Masters Cup Champion Garrett Gurthie on returning to DeLa
"Juliana was someone I looked up when I first started playing. Things like wortk ethic, preparation and execution. When I play with her, she’s similar to me, just doing her thing and getting prepared for her next shot. I think we’ll have a nice flow of players that take the game seriously," — Defending champion and four-time Masters Cup winner Catrina Allen on her first-round card
"It’s such an amazing course because it doesn’t matter how far you throw. You’ve got to hit your lines, you’ve got to know the skip, where gravity affects the disc, where you can putt, where you can’t. It’s so strategical. Controlled drives, controlled upshots or putts. There’s always a mental challenge on each hole and each hole is a little bit of a different mental challenge. It’s awesome. ... It’s a whole different beast out here. So much fun. Every tee shot is enjoyable. ... We like to shape shots too," — Two-time Masters Cup champion Ricky Wysocki
"I feel like it’s the first disc golf course we’ve played in a long time. We’ve been a ball golf courses everywhere all year. Jonesboro is the only other non-golf course but it has that feel. It’s the first one where you have to control some mids, spin rate, angles and the importance of putting. ... We all know that they can just keep going," Five-time Masters Cup champion Paul McBeth
"It’s a great thing. It’s a good time. Not far away from the World championships," — McBeth following up on saying his putt is feeling good.
"It's definitely a legendary course. I heard someone say that every hole at DeLa is a signature hole and I think that’s kind of true," — Ella Hansen on her first Masters Cup
Fun fact: Santa Cruz native, Matt Bell, took an 8 on his second hole of his first Masters Cup in 2011. He went on to win the Intermediate division by two strokes.
Check out the full press conference ahead of the first round on Friday.
