I got an email from Jon Peacock a couple of weeks ago stating that the wonderful Resort Course in Lago Vista was up 'n runnin' once again. I can't tell you how cool this place is or how much I missed it when it was down. The IRS came in and posted no trespassing signs around the old resort buildings, effectively taking out of play holes #1, 2, 3 and 18.

Jon and his Lago crew have put in four really cool holes to replace the ones they lost, which are all as good or better than the originals. They've also made a few changes to a couple of tee placements on some of the old holes. Additionally, they've made finding the new holes a piece of cake by putting up directional signs and renumbering all the tees. Great Job Guys.

I went out and played my first two rounds there in forever today and I'm thrilled its back in my rotation. This is one of the prettiest courses in the Hill Country where you're as likely to be accompanied by a dozen unafriad deer as you are to run into other golfers. If you haven't ever been out to this course, you should go. And if you've missed playing it, go check out the new holes.

Of course, the fact that I had my 1st ever ace out there today doesn't hurt either. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Congrats on that ACE Mark....

Lago Vista is without a doubt one of the best courses that I have played in my 3 years playing disc golf. I have to give my hat off to Jon and friends for the dedication they have put in at that course. My friend and I played a round with them right before National Doubles and he was courteous enough to meet us at the course and play a doubles round with us to tune up for the Tourney (they won). Hey Jon I moved to Arizona but I am coming back to Texas and I would love a second round to compensate for my loss at that course.../msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Sep 19 2002, 11:34 PM
Woo-hoo.....at least they didn't move 17. I used to throw my whole bag at it looking for the ace. The toughest hole under 200 feet that I have ever thrown.

Amen, to that, brutha. It does just kinda sit there and laugh at 'ya, huh? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

LOVE that course, and Im sure I'll love the new layout, even more!!!

Anyone got a contact for Lawren Herring????

Cong, I've got Lauren's (sp) # around here somewhere. I'll see if I can find it before I hit the road. At any rate, I'm sure you can get it from Jon Peacock. jonp@northshorediscgolf.com

As Chris anounced at the player's meeting in S'ville Saturday, there will be a workday/random doubles mini Sunday, Oct. 27 at Lago. This is to get the course in good shape for the winter and for..........MONTHLY MINIS! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

That's right, starting real soon, with the support and a thumbs up from the North Shore Disc Golf Club, I'll be running a monthly Sunday mini at this beautiful course. Plans currently are for the first Sunday of every month, but the start time is still under discussion. We're shooting for Nov. 3rd as our first one. Its the day after the next ZT10 in Waco, so if you just can't get enough golf come help us kick off a new tradition at one of the Hill Country's nicest courses.

In the meantime, take the opportunity to go out and get to know the new holes, or the whole course if you've never played it.

Here's the link to the info on the club's web site.

C'mon Cong, I heard that in school, you can do better. (or maybe you can't).

Went out to LV this morning for a round and I will warn those of you wanting to go play before the minis start that it is a little overgrown. It won't be for long, but be aware of it for now. We could use all the help you could give on the Oct. 27, workday as the only maintenance the course recieves is by club members and volunteers. I think I'll start taking my weed eater for every round until then. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

We have finalized the time for the monthly Sunday minis as 10 a.m.. Its fairly impossible in Tejas these days to come up with a workable schedule that doesn't conflict with something, but hopefully this conflicts with the fewest things possible.

Sep 30 2002, 06:27 PM
Awwww...you musta been trying to make me feel good, when you told me it was a first, a few months back.

Anyway, see ya in Red Rock Brother!!!!!

Sep 30 2002, 07:09 PM
Or maybe I was just unable to access those brain cells at that time. I recently told someone I hadn't seen them at an event when I had actually stopped and talked to them quite a bit. I'm pretty sure this is a common symptom of members of the OMB crowd.

They say your memory is the second thing to go. I can't remember what the first one is.

Mark is right. With a wetter summer things are growing fast. We originally were going to do a work day in September but it would be growing back fast. By waiting till the end of October we hope the growing season is over and we will be set for the winter with a groomed course after the work day.

Oct 03 2002, 07:38 PM
I sthere a place to park the boat there?

Oct 04 2002, 10:27 AM
I dunno Tom. There used to be on the Resort side, but I don't know what access is like over there anymore. I know I saw a boat tied up about halfway down #16's fairway the other day so I guess all you gotta have is a favorable spot to land, trees and a good rope. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

How you feeling, by the way? When are we gonna get to see you back out on the course?

Oct 04 2002, 10:42 AM
I was on the lake last weekend and we cruised by Lago. There is a pretty big dock at the resort. I don't know if it's private. It had quite a few boats docked.

jpeacock
Oct 04 2002, 11:30 AM
The dock at the Resort is a boat rental dock and I don't think it is for public docking. As Mark said on the cove side by the course, holes 16 & 17, you can beach it or anchor in shallow water.

Oct 07 2002, 12:09 AM
I played arrowhead sat. morning. i didn't print the directions to the resort course or arrowhead but i stumbled upon it just driving around. I enjoyed the course but sure wish I had drove a little further on highland drive and found the resort course. I'll be back. See ya'll in Wacko.

Hi All, Just wanted to remind everyone of the workday/doubles mini Sunday. Here's the info:

Sunday October 27th North Shore Disc Golf Club is sponsoring the Resort course mow and cleanup. Start time for the clean up is 10:00 AM Sunday, Oct. 27th. Draw Doubles Mini Tournament 1:00 PM, $5 entry, $1 Ace Pot or CTP if no ace.

The only maintenance that this course gets is from NSDGC and volunteers. We could really use your help.

I'll be running monthly minis on the 1st Sunday of every month starting Nov. 3rd (for those that don't get enough golf the day before at ZT10 Waco). This clean up day will help get the course ready for some of the most fun minis in the Hill Country.

The Hill Country Flyer's Monthly Minis are gonna pay pros in cash and ams in plastic. The ams will be able to pick their own payout (I learned this from a friend of mine who's running some lil' old one day events, perhaps you've heard of them. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif ). I went out to Circle R today and stocked up. Only the best and newest plastic available. For more info on the minis (I'll be posting plenty after the workday) email me at mark@zeecon.com.

If you want to help out and play a fun doubles mini at one of the best courses in the hill country, don't miss this Sunday.

Oct 27 2002, 09:21 AM
Yeah, I know the weather's crappy but I'm still going out there. I have a feeling the turnout this morning may not be quite what we'd hoped for, but if you wanna come out and help, you won't be by yourself. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Hey mark, I played the other course there at Lago Vista one time. Sandman and Peacock were working on it at the time and we played a short round. Pretty cool little course. We didn,t have time to play all of the Lago Vista course that day but it did look like a fun course. My dad lives across the lake and down the road a few miles in the community of Briarcliff. I would like for him to buy a boat so when I'm down there we could just scoot right across the lake to it and save about a 30 mile drive.

Oct 27 2002, 10:53 AM
Arriving at the DG course by boat. Now that would be a blast! Well, if you could get the beer and the pole outta my hand long enough to play golf, that is. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Okay, got my seal skins on and I'm ready to attack some weeds. Go Cowboys!

Oct 27 2002, 06:57 PM
Thanks to Jon, Chris, Larry and everyone else (didn't catch all the names) that showed up in the wetness for a weedeater attack and trash pick up at the course today. Even though it was wet, got a lot of work done. (Sorry I couldn't stay for doubles, had to get home and watch Emmitt)

Getting really excited about the monthly minis. More info soon.

The October 27th Resort Course cleanup was a little damp but successful. There were 5 weed eaters, and a trash cleanup crew. Thanks to Chris Sandman, Larry Thompson, Drake Stork, Mark Atwood, Kim Banda, and Susan Roth for helping. On Saturday the 26th Chris and Jon installed a bench on hole 15 and hauled a bunch of fill to level up tee 8. Thanks to these dedicated club members.
Monthly Mini, Sunday Nov. 3rd, 10:00 am tee off.

jon sorry i missed the workday, weather was a factor. if you reschedule another the turn out might be better,. i worked 4 or 5 times on the now defunct searight project. a lot of work can get done with a good turnout. let us know, thanks for your dedication.

Oct 29 2002, 09:12 AM
We got to play the courses a few weeks ago. It was pretty cool trying to get the deer out of the fairways. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Oct 29 2002, 09:49 AM
A couple of good smacks with CE plastic and they move along...eventually. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Daniel, sorry you missed it. What do you mean weather? It was a beautiful day. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif Whatever you do, don't miss 1st Sundays at Lago Vista.

If any of you still have any disc energy or pent up frustrations after the lil' ole event in Waco the day before, ( /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif ), Sunday Nov. 3rd will be the first of what I hope to be many season's worth of monthly minis at one of the coolest courses in the Hill Country.

Tee time: 10:00 am (please show up by 9:45 am)
Entry Fee: $5/$1 Ace Pot - $1 (Optional) Club Maintenance Fee (All course maintenance is done and paid for by club volunteers)
Ace Pot: CTP after the round if no ace is hit (yeah, right /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif )

This is my first attempt at running a mini event, but I'm sure we'll get the support needed to make a go of it. As I learn what works and what doesn't, what kind of average turnout to expect, and what players want out of these get togethers, I may do some tweaking along the way.

I've had the suggestion from a couple of friends who play Open that $5 isn't enough entry fee to draw many pros. I've looked around town and most entry fees for pros are $8-$10. This might be something that gets tweaked if it would help entice some more Open guys out to this great course. Love to hear some opinions on this.

Also thinking about (subject to turnout), 2 am divisions. Advanced for the JV baggers and a Nov./Int. type group for those who aren't ready for JV. All the decisions on divisions will of course be subject to turnout, but I'd love some shared wisdom on that too.

CE, 11xKC, JK, and Z plastic will be available for sale and for Ams pick-your-own payout. Will also have some used discs for sale or payout (ranging from beat Rocs for $2 to once thrown CE Valks for $?) All opinions on the types of discs you guys would like to see out there will be similarly appreciated.

See you guys Sunday. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Oct 29 2002, 11:08 AM
Big oops:

"CE, 11xKC, JK, and Z plastic will be available..." Forgot to mention the best ones.

What is the input on the ace pot. Maybe it shoud be $5. Most avid player like that because even if they don't win in the tourney they still have a chance of taking home some cash.

I like throwing my Roc at the Bambi's. They eat CE plastic you know.

Daniel I will be out there working on Saturday, not sure what time yet.

Oct 30 2002, 12:34 AM
My little opinion is this.

Pro entry should be $10. Then again some people don't get out of bed for less than $$$$.

I still have a concern with high ace pot funds. My feeling is to keep it low at $1 or $2.

I have only played the course once but had fun and enjoyed the course. When I can I will come out to play.

Oct 30 2002, 12:43 AM
Yes Dan, we start this Sunday.

Went out and played the course this afternoon (was today a beautiful day or what?), and I must say its ready for the minis. I didn't do the course justice with the way I played, but it was a great round, nonetheless (Way to make the ladies tee on #11, there Jon. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif ). Some of the tee boxes were a bit slippery (not many, just some), but if we have weather like this thru the week, they'll all be fine. Which reminds me, thanks to Jon and Chris (and whoever else may have helped) for the work on #8's tee. Its vastly improved.

Still waiting to hear more on some of those suggestions.

Good luck to all in Waco. I'll see y'all Saturday (and hopefully Sunday). /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

The course is a lot more user friendly since the cleanup. It will be even better by Sundays mini. It's odd how a lot of people take a groomed course for granted and won't play a grown up one. It is getting a lot more play.
We have cleaned out most trash cans and have added some trash bags at a few holes. Thanks to Mark at the shores for allowing us us their dumpster. If your coming out please do not litter. I would much rather weed eat or mow than pick up trash.

Nov 03 2002, 07:03 PM
Well, the inaugural Hill Country Flyer's Lago Vista mini is in the books.

Even with nearly constant drizzle on a somewhat chilly day, 10 players (5 Ams-5 Pros) came out and enjoyed a fun round of golf. The course was in great shape after all the recent work by the North Shore Disc Golf Club and the deer were kind enough to share it with us.

Open:
Tree 44 $20
Chris Sandman 48 $5
Gene Cz 53
Steve G 53
Mark Smith 54
(Nice shootin' Tree! Did someone say Round Rock?)

Am:
Jon Peacock 54 $15
Clyde Smith 56 $10
Mark Atwood 59 $5
Steve Mroz 60
Dan Mueller 66

No Ace was hit so we threw from the top of the hill between #1's basket and #2's tee to #16's basket for CTP.

CTP - Mark Atwood $10

Next HCF mini is December 1, 10:30 a.m. (seems to work better than 10 am). Still trying to decide whether or not to raise the entry fee for Open. I think some pros would like to play for a little more and some feel that a $5 casual mini round is just fine.

Thanks to those who came out and those who worked on the course this past week. Don't miss then next HCF min at one of the most fun courses in the Hill Country.

(BTW, I'm putting my $10 CTP back into the Ace pot for December. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif )

Mike, if Circle R II isn't an option for you on Sunday we'd love to see you and the Amazing Flying Coffeys at the Lago mini.

Wow, shot my personal best out there today at -2. That sould be a competitive Am score. Strong wind out on the course today, but the last two days in a row I've seen more folks out there playing than I have in the last year 1/2 combined. A major Dragon Flock sighting today.

Course is looking and playing great, thanks to NSDGC and all the volunteer work that's been put in.

10:30 Tee off, $5 Am-$8 Open (will make as many divisions as possible, but 1 Pro and 1 Am is most likely), $1 Ace Pot to be thrown off for if not hit during the round (no carry-over).

I knew that'd get your attention Metal. And don't worry, I won't be implementing any rule that makes drinking illegal. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Best we can figure, in singles competition, the course record in the new layout is the -10 that Tree shot last time at our 1st mini. Wonder if any records will be threatened this Sunday? Can I actually shoot better than -2? Can I cash at a mini twice in a row? Will we have enough young guns and old farts to actually make more than 1 Pro and 1 Am division? Will there be any unfortunate Champion Edition Plastic/White Tail Deer collisions?

The only way to find out the answers to these questions and more is to come out to one of the coolest courses in the Texas Hill Country for the December installment of the Hill Country Flyer's Monthly Minis, in conjunction with the North Shore Disc Golf Club.

Bonus sighting at Lago Vista. It was great seeing a big 10 point buck chaseing a doe with a smaller 8 point following across one of the fairways. The 10 point was not about to let jr. in on the action and kept him back with a show of his dominance from time to time. Was a Kodak moment for sure.

and you didn't want to call me............cool.
and if the course is all tomhawks, thats the planners fault. And thats too bad cause there is plenty to work with out there. But I see now why tree is not playing the big rock any more....no tomyhawkies there

Nov 26 2002, 03:49 PM
Come on Vinnie, the course isn't "all tomahawks", that would be ridiculous. The tommie is a good weapon on a lot of courses if you can throw one well (I can't throw one at all), and there's some holes out at LV where that's a good option, thats all. Sometime when you get a free afternoon, holla at me and let's go out there for a round. I'd be willing to bet you'd handle that course pretty well, tommie or not.

Actually I can think of 3 holes where you can't throw one, several more where its not a good idea and some others where it doesn't give you any particular advantage. Of course, Tree might've spanked C-dub the other day, that may be why it was on his mind. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Nov 26 2002, 04:07 PM
Excuse me, but Tree might have beaten CW But the tomahawk couldn't beat the straight throw down the middle, thats why he's out there practicing tight straight finese shots.... something lacking at the Rock. The Rivery is another good course to practice. The south course at the Rock was really nice. The holes don't have to be 400 plus to be competative. An 80 footer through trees can really decide whether you win or lose a tournament.

vinnie
Nov 26 2002, 05:14 PM
80 footer tommy hawk will work
A good course doesn't have a tommy hawk on it from the tee.
The throw is a throw to get out of trouble not to use as a driver. No skill just brut throw

Nov 26 2002, 05:52 PM
It is a good course. The 80 footer is not a tommahawk hole, theres no way. Unless you tommahawk flat, straight through the hole.

Nov 26 2002, 06:09 PM
Okay, first of all, there's no 80 footer. Second of all saying a "good course" doesn't have any Tomahawk shots on it from the tee is a ridiculous statement. Third, like I said, its not a tommie course, that's just simply untrue. Somebody sounds like they're ****** about a once a month mini that conflicts with theirs. Lighten up, dude.

Nov 26 2002, 06:46 PM
one can throw a tomahawk flat down the middle of the fairway. one has to at the snowfarm on hole 13 in the tight area with trees. it can happen, even to some shmoe

vinnie
Nov 26 2002, 07:06 PM
oh no Mark if I was ****** you would know it.
I dont hee haw around about being ******.
And tomahawks shots from the tee have no place on a course.
It takes a skilled player to throw a disc straight, But you can give a disc to a novice, they can throw a tomahawk.
I will make my own judgement if the course has tomahawks from the tee. Just watch Tree from the tee and he will show you the tomahawks holes, cause if it is there that will be the shot he throws.

vinnie
Nov 26 2002, 07:09 PM
And anyways I just want to see you have a world class course in Lago. Cause if Worlds is ever to come to Round Rock, we going to need a course for skilled players to be added to the agenda.
The Big Picture!

I played all 18 holes and didn't even consider a tomahawk, lots of straight, annies and hyzers though. One roller for a park job on 16 I think, overall has a great rythem and fun to dance to./msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gifOnce again thanks to all the Lago guys for getting this course back on line

Nov 26 2002, 07:43 PM
Fair enough, Vinnie, but my point is that there's a lot of tommie shots on a lot of courses. That doesn't mean that people use 'em. #14 at LV could be a good hole for a super long tommie, or a big flat shot that hyzers out at the end. How do you know which shot is better? It depends on the thrower. Tree might throw a tommie, you might throw a big flat shot to the right that fades back. You'll both park it (I'll be in front of the trees with a straight shot as far as I can throw), and you'll both be putting for a 2. I think Lago's a great course, even though someone that can throw a deadly tommie can do well there.

Sorry if I jumped the gun on 'ya a bit, bro.

Saying the Resort course is a tommy course is like saying RR is just a roller course. Anybody can through a roller, Right. Tommy shots are hard for a lot of players just like rollers. As just with a straight shot or a hyzer there is skill in playing the wind, proper release, and power.

A big tournement probably will not come to Lago Vista until someone buys it from the IRS. A lot of people do not know that the Lago Vista Resort Disc Course is on private property and is only maintained by a dedicated few.

I would like to see what the Rock would look like if the city did not mow and maintain the park.
The course plays with what ever shot you have in your bag. I guess some people just like to Bich!

its not ******* its stating facts. when all tee boxes have no over hanging branches or anything in the way from throwing tomahawks there could be problem Houston we have a problem.. check out some of Houck's tee boxes very uniquely placed under trees....HMMM HMMM I already said I like the course. and by the way with or without the CITY help at the ROCK it would still be WELL MAINTAINED we have a VERY DEDICATED CLUB TO OUR COURSE.. How the HELL you think the south got done????

The big picture is that the course was designed with what was available to us. A lot of open land in the flood plain.

The Lago Vista Arrowhead Park course was designed as a recreational course for local property owners. There are several holes with tree canopies at the tee box.

Vinnie bring it on out and play your game. You could have the new course record. Better yet redesign the course, install the baskets and tee boxes, and mow the fairways and pick up all the trash. I would be happy to play and probably not have to much criticism for someone elses efforts. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Okay, okay, okay. We all know Lago's a great fun course and Round Rock is a great course with a great club. We wouldn't be looking forward to great turnouts without the Dragons showing up. And how great is it for Rockers to have another fun course in the area to play?

Is that the Big Picture Vinnie? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Let's all play nice JP. Happy Thanksgiving bud, and I'll see you when you get back.

Nov 27 2002, 01:05 PM
And JP comes back with a damaging upper-cut that stuns tha Vinster/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Nov 27 2002, 01:07 PM
Shoot a ten down and look what I started. All over my non-talented, any novice can throw, tomahawk shot. Well Vinnie, if it's such an easy and "for sure birdie" shot...why haven't you ever used it? Oh you haven't tried...so your speaking of a shot that you know nothing about? The shot takes power, finese, release point, angle, speed, trajectory, and knowing what the disc in your hand will do. Gee, doesn't that sound like what an anhyzer, hyzer, flat, roller, two finger, putt or any other disc golf shot involves? And to say that a course that has a tomahawk shot off the tee is a bad course is absolutely laughable. A good course gives options off the tee, so that every player can utilize his best shot to get to the basket. I'll throw whatever route is available, but if the tomahawk is there and it can give me a birdie, I'm taking it. The same for you,if there is the choice between the "tommie" and an "annie", you're taking the "annie", because you utilize your best shot in the bag for the hole. Now to give me little credit on how I've played Lago, there are only 5 legitimate tomahawk holes and those are the only ones I tomahawk. For the record, so you can check them out yourself or anyone else who wants to entertain this useless and ridiculous discussion, it's holes 1, 3, 7, 13, and 16. Mark, I did throw the big "swooping" hyzer on hole 14 for birdies both times I played the course.

Nov 27 2002, 01:10 PM

Speaking of all in fun, I've already been in the ring and I'm going to give you a left hook right now...........You all know how good Tree is with his tommahawk, right....Well we all know how good you are with a roller...right....well I can keep up with Tree on Lago if I'm playing good. There is no way to keep up with someone rolling 500ft or who can throw 450 in the air and if they are off 60 or 70 feet left or right it doesn't matter, they are still down there. Anyone with enough farm land can build a long open course.....and if I was your age I would be kicking your bohiny.

What a day! 46 Players (18 Open-16 Adv/Am-10 Adv Masters, sort of /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif ) and a beautiful day at one of the prettiest courses in Central Texas.

Learning experiences can be enlightening and terrifying at the same time. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif I was thinking that 30 players were a possibility, but not a very realistic one. When 46 people decided to show up, most of them at what seemed like the same time, I was a bit overwhelmed. Because of this, and it being my first time to try to pull off something with that many folks, I made a couple of mistakes that slowed things down a bit, a couple of payout brain farts, learned a couple of preparation things I can do to help smooth things out, and was generally a bit frazzled at the end. But, overall, I'd say that I know what I need to do to eliminate the snafus.

Now for the real heroes that helped pulled off a mini with the most people I think that course has ever seen. Thunder, Vinnie, Metal, just to name a few, and all the other folks that helped me muddle my way through, a sincere Thank You. I couldnt have done it without your help and support. A special shout-out to the Dragons for turning out in force and to Gary Duke, Frank Dorsett and Jay Dixon, my OMB buds, who had drives of approx. 300 and 150 miles respectively.

Congrats to Dave Durham for taking the ace pot (and CTP) on #5 for $54 (shouldve been $56 Dave, Ill get you your two bucks. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif ) and to Katie yomamafoo Crumpton for putting up with us OMBs while playing a round with her 6 mo. old son Caleb in tow. Katie, Caleb behaved a lot better than a lot of golfers I know. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

After a fun time on the course, we drove a whopping two blocks to Eddies Talk of the Town Restaurant for some great food, a little football watching and of course, more smack talking. Then it was on to the 9-hole at Arrowhead for some just-for-fun random draw dubs (the team of Metal&Martyr shoots -4), while a lot of the RR guys went back to the Resort course for $5 a head random draw.

All in all, a great day of discn and fun. I can promise you that a couple of the things that slowed everything down at the Resort will never happen again and I hope you guys keep coming out. By my third time to do this, itll be a lot smoother.

Speaking of the third time, the next Hill Country Flyers Lago Vista Monthly is January 5th. Ive had a lot of suggestions from folks such as a higher Ace Pot buy-in, making this a 2-round mini, increasing Open Pro entry again to $10, etc. Im open to all suggestions and all ideas will be given due consideration. One thing that I can already tell you is that starting next month, therell be a $50 bounty for a new course record. Tree has it in the current layout at -10, but I suspect it could go a couple of strokes lower.

See yall Jan. 5th.

I tell you what Frank, we were dead even through 15 holes and I gave away those 3 strokes you beat me by on the last 3 holes because I was more worried about my players having to wait on me than I was about my score. Considering that you were smacking me about how you were gonna shoot a -7, I think I did okay. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

If I play in the next mini, it'll be on a threesome well ahead of everyone, so that when y'all get done, I'll be there smiling waiting for you. Actually Ryan, I know how to say your last name now. I was making fun of myself for not being able to pronounce it the first time your dad came out. Sorry, I won't do it again. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif Good freakin' shooting, by the way. Maybe you'll get a chance at the $50 bounty next time. (Were you really gonna throw a Spider over the trees on 14? That's a shot I'd like to see)

C-dub, I thought you were gonna play all rounds sober, these days. Or is that just tuning up for World's? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Hope you're well.

Speaking of Randy's, what happened to Gerde? I was sure he was on his way. I thought I heard someone mention a flat tire. Anyone heard from from him?

rickwright
Dec 02 2002, 08:46 PM
Randy, you sure missed a fun one. I was wondering why you were not there. If you hadn't played Lago yet I would advise you to before the mini. It sure helps. Hey Mark, was the little creek behind #9 considered o.b. We had someone on our card have a nice ace run only to end up wet. It is about 1 foot wide where he was and yes he took the stroke.

Dec 02 2002, 09:10 PM
I love the course. Played it a few times. See you at the next one.

Dec 02 2002, 09:27 PM
Yes Ricky, that little creek is OB. Out there, the OB's are very seasonal. The ruling we're going with is "contiguous and/or running" when it comes to water. For instance, there are some wet, marshy areas that are safe. There are also some puddles on the far left side of #15's fairway that are caused by the uneven way in which the lake dries or by a little rainfall that are also safe. If the water you are in is connected to the main body of the lake or a creek, or is running water, you're ob. The player in question did the right thing.

Of course, when the lake is totally full, there'll be no hope for a high out of control hyzer on #15, or an ill-advised, misbehaving anhyzer on #16! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

At 9 I tried pulling away from the curb. Tire wasnt round anymore, and the idiot I am in trusting tires, had no spare, and not enough time to fix it. By the time I called Ric he was almost there. My other half left minutes ahead with the car for her appointment, leaving me stuck listening to everyone tell us what a great time it was.

The photos make it look tougher than I remember it being. Then again my score was worse than I remember it being as well.

Dec 06 2002, 04:10 AM
Thanks for putting those up Joel. I'm working on a little write up of hole descriptions, lengths and some course stats, including a pro scoring average for each hole so far in the Hill Country Flyer's monthly minis. I was gonna send it to you with the photos that you said didn't come through, but I see you got them all up after all.

Good job on the site and if you still want that course info, I'll send it along.

FYI, the HCF Par (pro scoring averages in the first 2 monthly minis) for the whole course is 50.88. Hardest hole is #4 at 3.52, easiest hole is #5 at 2.24.

Those pics were taken just a couple of days prior to the last North Shore Disc Golf Club workday. The course is in great condition right now and has a nice winter haircut. Next nice day that I get some time, I'll get some new pics that better represent the trimmed look of the course now.

Resort course update. Lake Travis water level is near what is called full, 681' msl. This puts it up where holes 15 and 16 are a little trickier especially with any wind. The little creeks are still wet. Sandman put cedar mulch on tees 2 and 17 which are the ones that are usually soggy. It's still a little slick but much improved.
Tell everyone about the mini January 5th so we can get a bigger crowd than 46 player.
Let's make it tough on Atwood, MR TD.

A new documented Resort Course record. Sandman, Larry Thompson, and I were playing the Resort last week.
Sandman was 9 down with one bougie coming up to hole 18. He bitched about the bougie and said he needed to throw an ace to bet the record.
Well Sandman threw a big hyzer and slammed the ace. -11.

looks to be a AWESOME weekend for the Lago Mini..

Jan 03 2003, 06:25 PM
Wow, what a beeeeeyoootiful looking day and weekend forecast for golf at Lago! You're dead on there C-dub.

Went and did a little shopping and plastic fondling the other day and got some purty new toys for y'all to play with. Pro Line Beasts (great new disc) Firebirds (only got a couple left) and Spiders, 11x KC Eagles (finally got some heavy ones) Gazelles and Teebirds, Z Wildcats, Wasps and Extremes. Other great discs are also available as well as the cool new Innova "Soda" towels.

Just got off the phone with Eddie of Eddie's Talk of the Town Restaurant. You know, the place with the innocent, unsuspecting staff that we descended on last time? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif He is a super cool guy who is more than happy to have us coming back. Made to order breakfast buffet, big *** chicken fried steaks, a tv over the bar with a playoff game on and permission ("Always" according to Eddie), to bring in our own choice of cold adult beverages. He said he'll definitely be ready for us this time.

Also, there were a handful of us that left Eddie's last month and went to Arrowhead for a little Random Draw Doubles fun. Made for a sweet full day of DG in one of the prettiest parts of the Hill Country. Maybe this will become part of the monthly day 'o discin' fun. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

I've heard from the Circle C guys that they're planning on following the lead of those wonderful, wacky Dragons and getting together on the 1st Sunday of the month at Lago, rather than their usually scheduled Sunday morning weekly mini. A big thanks and shout out to Circle C for their support.

With the Rockers, Circle C, the out of towners and of course the Loco Lago Locals, this looks like its gonna be the happn' place to golf on the 1st Sunday of each month. If anyone has any questions, drop me an email at mark@zeecon.com.

/msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

Jan 03 2003, 11:23 PM
Hey Cong, chill dude. Austin players aint skeert of no stinkin' Bass or no stinkin' rain. Those guys that want to go play a sanctioned B-tier event this weekend will be there, those who don't won't. No need to start name calling. If that's an attempt to inspire more folks to drive down, I think you're going about it the wrong way.

/clipart/proud.gif yourself

/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Jan 04 2003, 02:03 AM
Hehehe.....yeah, the RR crew says everyone is skeered, to draw.....but it doesnt work for anyone else.....the no rain part, was just so unusual for a sanctioned bass event, I felt it deserved mention.

Thats why Im not a promoter, I 5UCK at it!!

/msgboard/images/clipart/proud.gif

Jan 04 2003, 02:38 AM
/msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif Well, to tell the truth, I don't think the "skeert" talk works for anyone trying to draw. Its just that Rockers can't help but talk smack to each other. Its a sickness that no Dragon wants the cure for.

Did I hear someone say ROUND ROCK!!!!! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

BTW, I'll be carrying entry forms for Victoria Open, Coastal Clash and Cold Turkey Classic around with me to my minis if anyone's interested in getting a jump on registration and isn't able to take advantage of the miracle of Titledisc.com.

Just got off the phone with Thunder. Sounds like he's raised the bar again, this time for attendance at a travelling mini. I'll let him tell y'all how many folks showed up at the Lake today, but suffice it to say that us Austin area golfers are gonna have to turn the heck out to top his number. It can be done, though.

Congrats to Chris and kudos to Texas DG'ers. Throw the discs, spread the love. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

BTW, in case you Lago players missed this info on the Cameron Park thread, the Ace Pot's going to $2, instead of a buck. That way, since its going home with somebody no matter what, they'll get a little more change in their pockets. I also said on that thread that I had thought about rolling it between the two courses to give it a chance to fatten up a bit. I was afraid folks wouldn't be too keen on that idea due to the distance between the two courses, but any input you guys have would be welcomed. Listening to what my players like and what they expect is how I learn.

Jan 05 2003, 01:47 AM
Why not roll 2 pots, one for each course ?

Or 1 dollar to the "ACE" pot and 1 to the ace/ctp pot.

If you hit an ace, you get the pot, if no aces, the rolling pot grows, and $1 per player/event is played of for as a CTP.

Jan 05 2003, 02:04 AM
Gary, of course the former was also under consideration and the latter was something that someone just mentioned to me on the phone a few minutes ago too. Great minds must be thinking alike. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif Not a bad idea.

What a day. I thought we'd top out at around 40-50 players for a normal monthly mini. I was a bit surprised when 73 players rolled in. Couldn't have been a nicer day to play golf at Lake Travis, either.

Big thanks go out to a lot of folks that helped make the January Lago monthly a success. First, without the support of the Double R Dragons, its not likely that we'd have numbers even close to what we had. Great club, great folks and pretty decent golfers, too. Id like to remind all the folks that have enjoyed our once a month get together at Lago that theres a mini every Sunday (except the 1st one each month), at a truly world class course in Round Rock and I encourage you all to go test your arms against the locals /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Personal thanks go out, as usual, to Metal Mike Fuller and the Cedar Park Schlotzsky's Deli for providing the free bottled water for our players and free food CTP's. Also, thanks to Vinnie Miller who's always ready to lend me a hand.

Speaking of Dragons, no C-dub, nobody 2'd #4 but you. Very nice.

We had folks coming in from Waco and S.A., as well as a super turnout from the locals. Big props to the North Shore Disc Golf Club (http://www.peakpureair.com/disc/default.htm) for all the work they do on the course with their own equipment on their own time. All the tables and benches were built by NSDGC and they do all the maintenance on the course. The new mulch on teeboxes #3 and #17 that Chris Sandman put down helped a bunch.

Speaking of Mr. Sandman, congrats are in order for winning for the first time on his own course. After shooting a super -8, he still had to win in a playoff over Judah Moser and Eddie Miller. Way to go, Chris, you and JP deserve a lot of gratitude from all of us that love that course.

Also, congrats to my Burnet buds Sam Janis for winning his first event ever and Kenny Wines (who hasn't played a competitive round of golf since KC used to come to Natl. Dubs) for cashing in Intermediate.

My apologies to the ladies. I announced them last and nearly forgot. Not out of disrespect, I just had that page listed out of order and was overwhelmed by the numbers of the day. As you can see by the above scores post, the gals are listed in a more appropriate spot and I can assure you that from this point on, the women's divisions will always be the first awarded!

Thanks to those who ate at Eddie's Talk of the Town Restaurant. Eddie was happy to see us and was ready for us this time, and everyone got served and finished eating in time to get back out to the course for more golf. He said we brought in about 30 folks, but I figure we can do better than that out of 73 golfers. Maybe this will help. FREE FOOD!!!!! Yup, Eddie says next time I can offer 1 free breakfast buffet or brunch for EVERY DIVISION. How freakin' cool is that? Not sure how I'm gonna use it yet, but suggestions will be duly noted. (And maybe even considered. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif)

Even though there were 27 more people this time than in December, things did seem to run a little smoother and a couple of the things that were confusing last time went much better. I streamlined the process a bit and it helped, but there are areas I can become even better in. Things are getting easier each time. It'll all be old hat soon. (yeah, right /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif) This is great on the job training for running 3 B-tiers this year.

Thanks again for all the support. Although I don't think we'll have to take Metal's suggestion to cap our minis yet, if more than 90 show up at the next one I may suggest to #'s 91 and up that there are a couple of other courses in the area. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

I almost forgot, Mando, in case you haven't heard, hit the CTP throw off for the ace pot. Nobody hit it during the round so everyone was down the hill throwing at #2 from the short tee. I was up in the parking lot doing scores when all of a sudden I heard a roaring cheer go up that I think they heard all the way in Round Rock. Evidently Mando didn't want to mess with measuring the CTP and just went ahead and slammed it in the chains for $146.

Way to go Mando. Could you buy me a ZiegenBock? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

I am not trying to start anything here but, where is the course at is it on the acctual property of the hotel still or has it been moved? the reason i ask is myself and a few other investors are considering seriously purchasing the resort for through way of the goverment auction.

Many different thing have crossed our minds considering it, the course will remain definatly but there will be some additions to the property in order to try to make it into a sports resort type facility. Possibly completly renovate the property and reuse the hotel again, perhaps as a host hotel for an upcoming worlds. although i am the only disc golfer out of the group, there is also 2 pro skaters and 3 pro vollyball players so possibilities are endless.

i am really just lookingfor the present location of the course and anythoughts as to improvements that could be done for the course. please email me any pertinant information about possible improvments so that i can submit them to the remaining investors for their opinions. please no bs just serious stuff.

peace

TK, check your email. Why don't you come out next month (2/2 10:30), and check the place out yourself? Bring the skaters and the volleyballers. We've got a Rec division. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

Somebody say Waco?

Jan 08 2003, 02:33 PM
Hey Mark, Im supposed to pass some HFDS info on to you, need an email though.

Jan 09 2003, 02:24 AM
Sorry fellas, just got home a little bit ago. I've been in Corpus Christi all day checking out the site of our September B-tier, the Coastal Clash. What a challenging course in a park with sweet views and rolling fairways. Not just the same old boring live oaks for trees either. More info on that later.

Cong, I got your email. Check the Victoria Open Thread.

TK, we'd still love to see you on the 2nd, whether your associates can make it or not (besides, you'd just beat the snot out of 'em anyway. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif)

Those of you who are curious about the Waco minis, I'll be reviving that thread in just a minute. I'll also post my mini schedule.

With 70 plus players do you still call it a mini.
How about a monthly? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Mark, have you got any art work going for the hot stamps? Jon P

Jan 09 2003, 11:30 AM
Got a couple of different logo things in the works, actually. Lots of work to do today so I'll try to put those on the slate.

And yes, its still a mini. A maxed out mini maybe, but still a relaxed, one round, low cost, fun for all mini. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

(Besides, calling it a monthly maxi just wouldn't sound too swell.)

Jan 09 2003, 09:47 PM
Especially since there aren't any pads.

I thought you were getting serious there.
What was I thinking ?

Jan 11 2003, 01:30 PM
I've gotten a couple of inquiries over the last few days about our next Lago mini. Its on Feb 2, the same weekend as the Big Show's Lewisville Open.

While its true that I played that event last year and had a blast and had said I was going to play it again this year, I'll be at the resort that day instead. The reason is simple: If I set a mini schedule that people come to expect, it would be bad business not to show up just because I wanted to go play an event.

It would be okay with me if it was just me and a couple of other guys on the 2nd, because Brian puts on a good show and that tournament is a super fun super tour. It deserves a good turnout.

But for anyone who might not be going, I'll still be there around 9 a.m. and we'll tee off at 10:30.

Thanks to all who support disc golf all over the great state of Texas. /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
