2012 Tim Selinske US Masters

Written by David Greenwell, PDGA #962
Louisville, Kentucky will be the host city for the 2012 Tim Selinske US Masters Disc Golf Championship. After hosting DGA and PDGA events for over 30 years, the Louisville Disc Golf Club will serve as the host club for Kentucky's first official major disc golf championship. The Louisville Disc Derby was one of the biggest events in the country from 1979 until the early nineties when a change in Parks personnel resulted in a temporary disc golf slowdown. The last decade has brought many positive changes to the local disc golf scene, and we're back bigger and better than ever.
One of the big reasons for disc golf's early tournament success in Louisville was our geographic location. We are less than 5 hours driving time from Chicago, St. Louis, Nashville, Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Columbus just to name a few. For that reason alone this should be the most attended US Masters yet. It will take place on Labor Day weekend - Aug. 31, Sept.1 and 2.
Our club, Louisville Metro Parks, The Louisville Tourism and Convention Bureau, The Louisville Sports Commission, The Galt House, and all of the disc golfers in our region are really excited to be hosting the Tim Selinske US Masters. Tim Selinske was one of the best human beings I have ever known. For us to host an event that he started and is now keeping his memory alive is quite an honor.
Innova Champion will again be the title sponsor, and has promised a fantastic players package. Tim was all about the show. He wanted everyone, regardless of their abilities, to have a great time and for everyone to get their money's worth. We will do our best to run this year’s event "like Tim would."
With that being said, I have already contacted several other probable sponsors and am hoping that all of the disc golf related product makers will want to be a part of this event. We will be in touch.
By the way, rumor has it (as well as the Mayan calendar) that sometime in December 2012 the world as we know it will cease to exist. I'm not saying anything for sure, but if that happens to be the case the 2012 US Masters would be the last Tim Selinske US Masters on earth! Who wants to face Tim at the "next level" US Masters and say, “I was going to go to the last one on earth, but I had to [insert any lame excuse here]?” Not me!
I will serve as Event Coordinator for this year’s event. Jeremy Watts, Kentucky's state coordinator, and long time TD for many events in our region, will serve as the overall TD. The featured course will be Charlie Vettiner. Seviren Lang in southern Indiana will also be used. The Fun Farm and Iroquois Park are two other possible options, if needed. A lot depends on how many people sign up. I would like to have shot gun starts and foursomes if at all possible, but tee times may be necessary. The plan would be for everyone to play two courses. If there is a change to that plan, it will be posted on our soon to be designed web-site.
One of Louisville's finest hotels, The Galt House, will be the host hotel. Situated on the historic Ohio River in downtown Louisville, the Galt House is about 20 minutes from each of the four courses in the mix. The Galt House is within walking distance of some of Louisville's finest restaurants, the Mohammed Ali Museum, Louisville Slugger Museum, the Theatre for the Arts, the KFC Yum Center, 4th Street Live, and much, much more.
The Galt House has given us some very good rates: 89.00 +tax for double occupancy in the Revue Tower (deluxe rooms) and 119.00 +tax for double occupancy in the Suite Tower, for Executive Suites. The latter has an awesome view of the Ohio River. They have also waived the $15/ day parking fee for us. The mandatory players meeting on Thursday will be there, as well. Bring the entire family for a destination vacation, and enjoy Louisville's finest! The Galt House will hold our block of rooms until August 8. For more about the Galt House, go to www.GaltHouse.com.
We plan on letting everyone who is eligible, play. All divisions with at least 4 players will receive a trophy. Circle the date on your calendar and come join us for what will likely be the most attended US Masters to date.
