The Great Shuffle

2014 Am Worlds Day Two

Thursday, July 24, 2014 - 01:16

Two down, three to go. Days that is. It’s hard to believe how much more disc golf there is to go here at the 2014 Amateur & Junior World Championships. We’ve all been quite lucky so far weather-wise and if the forecasts hold true, it looks as if that pattern will continue throughout the remainder of the event. The ideal conditions should make for a few more rounds of no-excuses, championship caliber disc golf on courses with conditions that can only be described as pristine.

After the end of the rounds yesterday, the Advanced Men’s division finally saw the “great shuffle”. The 270+ players that make up pools A, B, C, and D were reorganized in ascending order, with the lowest scores being moved to the A-pool and the highest scores being moved to the D-pool. We now have a field of players set up in the way that everyone is a lot more familiar with.

After turning in the hot round yesterday at Kaposia Park, shooting 12 under par, Justin Lammers #37852 is now the Advanced Men’s leader. His unofficially rated 1048 round left him sitting alone at the top of the field with a two stroke advantage over Cody Greenfield #45994 and Robert Smith #55007, who are now tied for second place. Coming over from the D-pool into the fourth place slot is Jake LaPutka #52776, just one stroke off of Greenfield and Smith. LaPutka’s round on the Kenwood Park Blue Course yesterday was unmatched, carding a nine under par and giving him his second round of the tournament with an unofficial rating of 1000+.

The Advanced Women’s division had the chance to sleep in yesterday, as their only round of the day was played at 2:00pm at Oakwood Park. The lead card consisted of Samara Schrimsher #34889, Vanessa Van Dyken #62325, Sara Lamberson #41012, and Ania Knapinska #33679. As the women made their way through the mosquito-plagued holes of Oakwood Park, a battle for the lead began to take place between Schrimsher and Van Dyken. Schrimsher fought off Van Dyken for as long as she could but let the lead slip away on the final few holes of the round. Lamberson will join the two of them this morning on the lead card once again, with the addition of Megan Matsen #59875. The Advanced Women’s field will be playing their fourth and fifth rounds today, both at Bryant Lake Park.

In other amazing news, 12 year old Henry Dissell #56251 is now leading the Juniors 13 & Under division by a whopping 11 strokes. He started the day out yesterday carding a a 50 on the Lions Park Blue Course for an unofficially 969 rated round. He was apparently unsatisfied and followed that round by shooting a 1004 rated round from the short tees immediately after! And yes, you read that correctly.

The youngsters out here are simply incredible. It simply wouldn't be right if we didn't mention Evan Brennan Smith #55783. He may only be 11 years old, but he has an Am Worlds ace. Not many people will ever be able to say that! He's pictured below holding his driver after slamming chains off the tee of hole 13 at Lion's Park, Congrats Evan!

The only sub-80 round for the tournament on the 27 hole, par 88, Blue Ribbon Pines course was shot by Nate Corder #44800 in the Junior Boys 19 & Under division. Nate’s score of a 79 was rated at 1012 and places him in a one-throw lead over both Nick Paineau #59783 and Nicholas Duran #28359 who are tied for second place.
